Decomposition Methods for Nonlinear Optimization and Data Mining
We focus on two central themes in this dissertation. The first one is on decomposing polytopes and polynomials in ways that allow us to perform nonlinear optimization. We start off by explaining important results on decomposing a polytope into special polyhedra. We use these decompositions and develop methods for computing a special class of integrals exactly. Namely, we are interested in computing the exact value of integrals of polynomial functions over convex polyhedra. We present prior work and new extensions of the integration algorithms. Every integration method we present requires that the polynomial has a special form. We explore two special polynomial decomposition algorithms that are useful for integrating polynomial functions. Both polynomial decompositions have strengths and weaknesses, and we experiment with how to practically use them. After developing practical algorithms and efficient software tools for integrating a polynomial over a polytope, we focus on the problem of maximizing a polynomial function over the continuous domain of a polytope. This maximization problem is NP-hard, but we develop approximation methods that run in polynomial time when the dimension is fixed. Moreover, our algorithm for approximating the maximum of a polynomial over a polytope is related to integrating the polynomial over the polytope. We show how the integration methods can be used for optimization. The second central topic in this dissertation is on problems in data science. We first consider a heuristic for mixed-integer linear optimization. We show how many practical mixed-integer linear have a special substructure containing set partition constraints. We then describe a nice data structure for finding feasible zero-one integer solutions to systems of set partition constraints. Finally, we end with an applied project using data science methods in medical research.

A countdown process, with application to the rank of random matrices over $\mathbb F_q(n)$
Motivated by the work of Fulman and Goldstein, comparing the distribution of the corank of random matrices in $\mathbb F_q[n]$ with the limit distribution as $n \to \infty$, we define a countdown process, driven by independent geometric random variables related to random integer partitions. Analysis of this process leads to sharper bounds on the total variation distance.

Weighted dependency graphs
Published in Electronic Journal of Probability, 23, paper no. 93, 65 pp, 2018 • Search Publication
The theory of dependency graphs is a powerful toolbox to prove asymptotic normality of sums of random variables. In this article, we introduce a more general notion of weighted dependency graphs and give normality criteria in this context. We also provide generic tools to prove that some weighted graph is a weighted dependency graph for a given family of random variables. To illustrate the power of the theory, we give applications to the following objects: uniform random pair partitions, the random graph model $G(n,M)$, uniform random permutations, the symmetric simple exclusion process and multilinear statistics on Markov chains. The application to random permutations gives a bivariate extension of a functional central limit theorem of Janson and Barbour. On Markov chains, we answer positively an open question of Bourdon and Vallée on the asymptotic normality of subword counts in random texts generated by a Markovian source.

Ordered set partition statistics and the Delta Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a recent generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the field of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we give evidence for the Delta Conjecture by proving a pair of conjectures of Wilson and Haglund-Remmel-Wilson which give equidistribution results for statistics related to inversion count and major index on objects related to ordered set partitions. Our results generalize the famous result of MacMahon that major index and inversion number share the same distribution on permutations.

Vertex-imprimitive symmetric graphs with exactly one edge between any two distinct blocks
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $Γ$ is called $G$-symmetric if it admits $G$ as a group of automorphisms acting transitively on the set of ordered pairs of adjacent vertices. We give a classification of $G$-symmetric graphs $Γ$ with $V(Γ)$ admitting a nontrivial $G$-invariant partition $\mathcal{B}$ such that there is exactly one edge of $Γ$ between any two distinct blocks of $\mathcal{B}$. This is achieved by giving a classification of $(G, 2)$-point-transitive and $G$-block-transitive designs $\mathcal{D}$ together with $G$-orbits $Ω$ on the flag set of $\mathcal{D}$ such that $G_{σ, L}$ is transitive on $L \setminus \{σ\}$ and $L \cap N = \{σ\}$ for distinct $(σ, L), (σ, N) \in Ω$, where $G_{σ, L}$ is the setwise stabilizer of $L$ in the stabilizer $G_σ$ of $σ$ in $G$. Along the way we determine all imprimitive blocks of $G_σ$ on $V \setminus \{σ\}$ for every $2$-transitive group $G$ on a set $V$, where $σ\in V$.

Graph homomorphisms and components of quotient graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study how the number $c(X)$ of components of a graph $X$ can be expressed through the number and properties of the components of a quotient graph $X/\sim.$ We partially rely on classic qualifications of graph homomorphisms such as locally constrained homomorphisms and on the concept of equitable partition and orbit partition. We introduce the new definitions of pseudo-covering homomorphism and of component equitable partition, exhibiting interesting inclusions among the various classes of considered homomorphisms. As a consequence, we find a procedure for computing $c(X)$ when the projection on the quotient $X/\sim$ is pseudo-covering. That procedure becomes particularly easy to handle when the partition corresponding to $X/\sim$ is an orbit partition.
Nesting statistics in the O(n) loop model on random planar maps
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 404, 1125-1229 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
In the O(n) loop model on random planar maps, we study the depth - in terms of the number of levels of nesting - of the loop configuration, by means of analytic combinatorics. We focus on the 'refined' generating series of pointed disks or cylinders, which keep track of the number of loops separating the marked point from the boundary (for disks), or the two boundaries (for cylinders). For the general O(n) loop model, we show that these generating series satisfy functional relations obtained by a modification of those satisfied by the unrefined generating series. In a more specific O(n) model where loops cross only triangles and have a bending energy, we explicitly compute the refined generating series. We analyse their non generic critical behavior in the dense and dilute phases, and obtain the large deviations function of the nesting distribution, which is expected to be universal. Using the framework of Liouville quantum gravity (LQG), we show that a rigorous functional KPZ relation can be applied to the multifractal spectrum of extreme nesting in the conformal loop ensemble (CLE) in the Euclidean unit disk, as obtained by Miller, Watson and Wilson, or to its natural generalisation to the Riemann sphere. It allows us to recover the large deviations results obtained for the critical O(n) random planar map models. This offers, at the refined level of large deviations theory, a rigorous check of the fundamental fact that the universal scaling limits of random planar map models as weighted by partition functions of critical statistical models are given by LQG random surfaces decorated by independent CLEs.

Algorithm on rainbow connection for maximal outerplanar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider rainbow connection number of maximal outerplanar graphs(MOPs) on algorithmic aspect. For the (MOP) $G$, we give sufficient conditions to guarantee that $rc(G) = diam(G).$ Moreover, we produce the graph with given diameter $d$ and give their rainbow coloring in linear time. X.Deng et al. $\cite{XD}$ give a polynomial time algorithm to compute the rainbow connection number of MOPs by the Maximal fan partition method, but only obtain a compact upper bound. J. Lauri $\cite{JL}$ proved that, for chordal outerplanar graphs given an edge-coloring, to verify whether it is rainbow connected is NP-complete under the coloring, it is so for MOPs. Therefore we construct Central-cut-spine of MOP $G,$ by which we design an algorithm to give a rainbow edge coloring with at most $2rad(G)+2+c,0\leq c\leq rad(G)-2$ colors in polynomial time.

Edge-covers in d-interval hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A d-interval hypergraph has d disjoint copies of the unit interval as its vertex set, and each edge is the union of d subintervals, one on each copy. Extending a classical result of Gallai on the case d = 1, Tardos and Kaiser used topological tools to bound the ratio between the transversal number and the matching number in such hypergraphs. We take a dual point of view, and bound the edge-covering number (namely the minimal number of edges covering the entire vertex set) in terms of a parameter expressing independence of systems of partitions of the d unit intervals. The main tool we use is an extension of the KKM theorem to products of simplices, due to Peleg. Our approach also yields a new proof of the Tardos-Kaiser result.

Monochromatic sums and products in $\mathbb{N}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
An old question in Ramsey theory asks whether any finite coloring of the natural numbers admits a monochromatic pair $\{x+y,xy\}$. We answer this question affirmatively in a strong sense by exhibiting a large new class of non-linear patterns which can be found in a single cell of any finite partition of $\mathbb{N}$. Our proof involves a correspondence principle which transfers the problem into the language of topological dynamics. As a corollary of our main theorem we obtain partition regularity for new types of equations, such as $x^2-y^2=z$ and $x^2+2y^2-3z^2=w$.

A simple bijection between permutation matrices and descending plane partitions without special parts
We present a simple bijection between permutation matrices and descending plane partitions without special parts. This bijection is already mentioned in work of P. Lalonde (without giving the details); it involves the inversion words of permutations and the (well-known) representation of descending plane partitions as families of non--intersecting lattice paths. (Taking a short detour, we will also exhibit how the (well--known) enumeration of descending plane partitions follows easily from the evaluation of Andrew's determinant.)

Lectures on Integrable probability: Stochastic vertex models and symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a homogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant. For this model we derive concise integral representations for multi-point q-moments of the height function and for the q-correlation functions. At least in the case of the step initial condition, our formulas degenerate in appropriate limits to many known formulas of such type for integrable probabilistic systems in the (1+1)d KPZ universality class, including the stochastic six vertex model, ASEP, various q-TASEPs, and associated zero range processes. Our arguments are largely based on properties of a family of symmetric rational functions (introduced in arXiv:1410.0976) that can be defined as partition functions of the higher spin six vertex model for suitable domains; they generalize classical Hall-Littlewood and Schur polynomials. A key role is played by Cauchy-like summation identities for these functions, which are obtained as a direct corollary of the Yang-Baxter equation for the higher spin six vertex model. These are lecture notes for a course given by A.B. at the Ecole de Physique des Houches in July of 2015. All the results and proofs presented here generalize to the setting of the fully inhomogeneous higher spin six vertex model, see arXiv:1601.05770 for a detailed exposition of the inhomogeneous case.

Statistical structure of concave compositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study concave compositions, an extension of partitions that were considered by Andrews, Rhoades, and Zwegers. They presented several open problems regarding the statistical structure of concave compositions including the distribution of the perimeter and tilt, the number of summands, and the shape of the graph of a typical concave composition. We present solutions to these problems by applying Fristedt's conditioning device on the uniform measure.

Variation on a theme of Nathan Fine. New weighted partition identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We utilize false theta function results of Nathan Fine to discover three new partition identities involving weights. These relations connect Göllnitz--Gordon type partitions and partitions with distinct odd parts, partitions into distinct parts and ordinary partitions, and partitions with distinct odd parts where the smallest positive integer that is not a part of the partition is odd and ordinary partitions subject to some initial conditions, respectively. Some of our weights involve new partition statistics, one is defined as the number of different odd parts of a partition larger than or equal to a given value and another one is defined as the number of different even parts larger than the first integer that is not a part of the partition. Dedicated to our friend, Krishna Alladi, on his 60th birthday.
Multi-part Nordhaus-Gaddum type problems for tree-width, Colin de Verdière type parameters, and Hadwiger number
A traditional Nordhaus-Gaddum problem for a graph parameter $β$ is to find a (tight) upper or lower bound on the sum or product of $β(G)$ and $β(\bar{G})$ (where $\bar{G}$ denotes the complement of $G$). An $r$-decomposition $G_1,\dots,G_r$ of the complete graph $K_n$ is a partition of the edges of $K_n$ among $r$ spanning subgraphs $G_1,\dots,G_r$. A traditional Nordhaus-Gaddum problem can be viewed as the special case for $r=2$ of a more general $r$-part sum or product Nordhaus-Gaddum type problem. We determine the values of the $r$-part sum and product upper bounds asymptotically as $n$ goes to infinity for the parameters tree-width and its variants largeur d'arborescence, path-width, and proper path-width. We also establish ranges for the lower bounds for these parameters, and ranges for the upper and lower bounds of the $r$-part Nordhaus-Gaddum type problems for the parameters Hadwiger number, the Colin de Verdière number $μ$ that is used to characterize planarity, and its variants $ν$ and $ξ$.
Representations of symmetric groups with non-trivial determinant

We give a closed formula for the number of partitions $λ$ of $n$ such that the corresponding irreducible representation $V_λ$ of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant. We determine how many of these partitions are self-conjugate and how many are hooks. This is achieved by characterizing the $2$-core towers of such partitions. We also obtain a formula for the number of partitions of $n$ such that the associated permutation representation of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant.

p-Saturations of Welter's Game and the Irreducible Representations of Symmetric Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a relation between the Sprague-Grundy function $\text{sg}$ of a $p$-saturation of Welter's game and the degrees of the ordinary irreducible representations of symmetric groups. In this game, a position can be viewed as a partition $λ$. Let $ρ^λ$ be the irreducible representation of $\text{Sym}(|λ|)$ indexed by $λ$. For every prime $p$, we show the following results: (1) the degree of $ρ^λ$ is prime to $p$ if and only if $\text{sg}(λ) = |λ|$; (2) the restriction of $ρ^λ$ to $\text{Sym}(\text{sg}(λ))$ has an irreducible component with degree prime to $p$. Further, for every integer $p$ greater than 1, we obtain an explicit formula for $\text{sg}(λ)$.

Oriented Flip Graphs and Noncrossing Tree Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the lattice properties of posets of torsion pairs in the module category of a family of representation-finite gentle algebras called tiling algebras, introduced by Coelho Simoes and Parsons. We present a combinatorial model for torsion pairs using polyogonal subdivisions of a convex polygon. We use this model and the lattice theory to classify 2-term simple-minded collections in the bounded derived category of the corresponding tiling algebra. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of c-matrices for any quiver mutation-equivalent to a type A Dynkin quiver. Our model is developed using the dual tree of a polygonal subdivision. Given such a tree, we introduce a simplicial complex of noncrossing geodesics supported by the tree which we call the noncrossing complex. The facets of the noncrossing complex may be given the structure of an oriented flip graph. Special cases of the oriented flip graphs that may be expressed in this way include the Tamari order, type A Cambrian orders, oriented exchange graphs for quivers mutation-equivalent to a path quiver. We prove that the oriented flip graph of any noncrossing complex is a polygonal, congruence-uniform lattice. To do so, we express the oriented flip graph as a lattice quotient of a lattice of biclosed sets. The facets of the noncrossing complex have an alternate ordering known as the shard intersection order. We prove that this shard intersection order is isomorphic to a lattice of noncrossing tree partitions. The oriented flip graph inherits a cyclic action from its congruence-uniform structure. On noncrossing tree partitions, this cyclic action generalizes the classical Kreweras complementation on noncrossing set partitions. We show that the data of a noncrossing tree partition and its Kreweras complement is equivalent to a 2-term simple-minded collection of the associated tiling algebra.

Polynomial splitting measures and cohomology of the pure braid group
Published in Arnold Mathematical Journal 3, no. 2, 219--249 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
We study for each $n$ a one-parameter family of complex-valued measures on the symmetric group $S_n$, which interpolate the probability of a monic, degree $n$, square-free polynomial in $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ having a given factorization type. For a fixed factorization type, indexed by a partition $λ$ of $n$, the measure is known to be a Laurent polynomial. We express the coefficients of this polynomial in terms of characters associated to $S_n$-subrepresentations of the cohomology of the pure braid group $H^{\bullet}(P_n, \mathbb{Q})$. We deduce that the splitting measures for all parameter values $z= -\frac{1}{m}$ (resp. $z= \frac{1}{m}$), after rescaling, are characters of $S_n$-representations (resp. virtual $S_n$-representations.)
