To each partition $λ$ with distinct parts we assign the probability $Q_λ(x) P_λ(y)/Z$ where $Q_λ$ and $P_λ$ are the Schur $Q$-functions and $Z$ is a normalization constant. This measure, which we call the shifted Schur measure, is analogous to the much-studied Schur measure. For the specialization of the first $m$ coordinates of $x$ and the first $n$ coordinates of $y$ equal to $α$ ($0<α<1$) and the rest equal to zero, we derive a limit law for $λ_1$ as $m,n\ra\infty$ with $τ=m/n$ fixed. For the Schur measure the $α$-specialization limit law was derived by Johansson. Our main result implies that the two limit laws are identical.
On a class of algebras defined by partitions

A class of associative (super) algebras is presented, which naturally generalize both the symmetric algebra $Sym(V)$ and the wedge algebra $\wedge (V)$, where $V$ is a vector-space. These algebras are in a bijection with those subsets of the set of the partitions which are closed under inclusions of partitions. We study the rate of growth of these algebras, then characterize the case where these algebras satisfy polynomial identities.

Fix a rectangular Young diagram R, and consider all the products of Schur functions s(mu) s(mu^c), where mu and mu^c run over all (unordered) pairs of partitions which are complementary with respect to R.
Theorem: The self-complementary products, s(mu)^2 where mu=mu^c, are linearly independent of all other s(mu) s(mu^c).
Conjecture: The products s(mu) s(mu^c) are all linearly independent.
The Interlace Polynomial of a Graph

Motivated by circle graphs, and the enumeration of Euler circuits, we define a one-variable ``interlace polynomial'' for any graph. The polynomial satisfies a beautiful and unexpected reduction relation, quite different from the cut and fuse reduction characterizing the Tutte polynomial.
It emerges that the interlace graph polynomial may be viewed as a special case of the Martin polynomial of an isotropic system, which underlies its connections with the circuit partition polynomial and the Kauffman brackets of a link diagram. The graph polynomial, in addition to being perhaps more broadly accessible than the Martin polynomial for isotropic systems, also has a two-variable generalization that is unknown for the Martin polynomial. We consider extremal properties of the interlace polynomial, its values for various special graphs, and evaluations which relate to basic graph properties such as the component and independence numbers.
Topological Borsuk problem
Classical Borsuk problem asks about the minimal number of closed subsets of smaller diameter necessary to partition every compact in the Euclidean space. Topological version of the Borsuk problem is discussed.

The diagram of a 132-avoiding permutation can easily be characterized: it is simply the diagram of a partition. Based on this fact, we present a new bijection between 132-avoiding and 321-avoiding permutations. We will show that this bijection translates the correspondences between these permutations and Dyck paths given by Krattenthaler and by Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, respectively, to each other. Moreover, the diagram approach yields simple proofs for some enumerative results concerning forbidden patterns in 132-avoiding permutations.

Let $G_M$ be one of the complex Lie groups $O_M$ and $Sp_M$. The irreducible finite-dimensional representations of the group $G_M$ are labeled by partitions $μ$ satisfying certain extra conditions. Let $U$ be the representation of $G_M$ corresponding to $μ$. Regard the direct product $G_N\times G_M$ as a subgroup of $G_{N+M}$. Let $V$ be the irreducible representation of $G_{N+M}$ corresponding to a partition $λ$. Consider the vector space $W=Hom_{G_M}(U,V)$. It comes with a natural action of the group $G_N$. Let $n$ be sum of parts of $λ$ less the sum of parts of $μ$. For any choice of a standard Young tableau of skew shape $λ/μ$, we realize $W$ as a subspace in the tensor product of $n$ copies of the defining $N$-dimensional representation of $G_N$. This subspace is determined as the image of a certain linear operator $F(M)$ in the tensor product, given by an explicit formula. When M=0 and $W=V$ is an irreducible representation of $G_N$, we recover the classical realization of $V$ as a subspace in the space of all traceless tensors. Then the operator F(0) can be regarded as the analogue for $G_N$ of the Young symmetrizer, corresponding to the chosen standard tableau of shape $λ$. Even in the special case M=0, our formula for the operator $F(M)$ is new. Our results are applications of representation theory of the twisted Yangian, corresponding to $G_N$. In particular, $F(M)$ is an intertwining operator between two representations of the twisted Yangian in the $n$-fold tensor product.

An expression is given for the plethysm $p_{2}\circ S_{\square}$, where $p_{2}$ is the power sum of degree two and $S_{\square}$ is the Schur function indexed by a rectangular partition. The formula can be well understood from the viewpoint of the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra of type $A_{2}^{(2)}$.

Let $Ω=\{1,2,...,n\}$ where $n \ge 2$. The {\em shape} of an ordered set partition $P=(P_1,..., P_k)$ of $Ω$ is the integer partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ defined by $λ_i = |P_i|$. Let G be a group of permutations acting on $Ω$. For a fixed partition $λ$ of n, we say that G is {\em $λ$-transitive} if G has only one orbit when acting on partitions P of shape $\la$. A corresponding definition can also be given when G is just a set. For example, if $λ=(n-t,1,...,1)$, then a $λ$-transitive group is the same as a t-transitive permutation group and if $λ=(n-t,t)$, then we recover the t-homogeneous permutation groups.
In this paper, we use the character theory of the symmetric group $S_n$ to establish some structural results regarding $λ$-transitive groups and sets. In particular, we are able to generalize a theorem of Livingstone and Wagner about t-homogeneous groups. We survey the relevant examples coming from groups. While it is known that a finite group of permutations can be at most 5-transitive unless it contains the alternating group, we show that it is possible to construct a non-trivial t-transitive set of permutations for each positive integer t. We also show how these ideas lead to a split basis for the association scheme of the symmetric group.
Non-crossing cumulants of type B

We establish connections between the lattices of non-crossing partitions of type B introduced by V. Reiner, and the framework of the free probability theory of D. Voiculescu.
Lattices of non-crossing partitions (of type A, up to now) have played an important role in the combinatorics of free probability, primarily via the non-crossing cumulants of R. Speicher. Here we introduce the concept of {\em non-crossing cumulant of type B;} the inspiration for its definition is found by looking at an operation of ``restricted convolution of multiplicative functions'', studied in parallel for functions on symmetric groups (in type A) and on hyperoctahedral groups (in type B).
The non-crossing cumulants of type B live in an appropriate framework of ``non-commutative probability space of type B'', and are closely related to a type B analogue for the R-transform of Voiculescu (which is the free probabilistic counterpart of the Fourier transform). By starting from a condition of ``vanishing of mixed cumulants of type B'', we obtain an analogue of type B for the concept of free independence for random variables in a non-commutative probability space.

Say that mu is a ``subpartition'' of an integer partition lambda if the multiset of parts of mu is a submultiset of the parts of lambda, and define an integer partition lambda to be ``wide'' if for every subpartition mu of lambda, mu >= mu' in dominance order (where mu' denotes the conjugate or transpose of mu). Then Brian Taylor and the first author have conjectured that an integer partition lambda is wide if and only if there exists a tableau of shape lambda such that (1) for all i, the entries in the ith row of the tableau are precisely the integers from 1 to lambda_i inclusive, and (2) for all j, the entries in the jth column of the tableau are pairwise distinct. This conjecture was originally motivated by Rota's basis conjecture and, if true, yields a new class of integer multiflow problems that satisfy max-flow min-cut and integrality. Wide partitions also yield a class of graphs that satisfy ``delta-conjugacy'' (in the sense of Greene and Kleitman), and the above conjecture implies that these graphs furthermore have a completely saturated stable set partition. We present several partial results, but the conjecture remains very much open.

We prove a conjecture of Crapo and Penne which characterizes isotopy classes of skew configurations with spindle-structure. We use this result in order to define an invariant, spindle-genus, for spindle-configurations.
We also slightly simplify the exposition of some known invariants for configurations of skew lines and use them to define a natural partition of the lines in a skew configuration.
Finally, we describe an algorithm which constructs a spindle in a given switching class, or proves non-existence of such a spindle.
Generalized pattern avoidance with additional restrictions
Babson and Steingrímsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. We consider n-permutations that avoid the generalized pattern 1-32 and whose k rightmost letters form an increasing subword. The number of such permutations is a linear combination of Bell numbers. We find a bijection between these permutations and all partitions of an $(n-1)$-element set with one subset marked that satisfy certain additional conditions. Also we find the e.g.f. for the number of permutations that avoid a generalized 3-pattern with no dashes and whose k leftmost or k rightmost letters form either an increasing or decreasing subword. Moreover, we find a bijection between n-permutations that avoid the pattern 132 and begin with the pattern 12 and increasing rooted trimmed trees with n+1 nodes.

We prove a new four parameter q-hypergeometric series identity from which the three parameter key identity for the Goellnitz theorem due to Alladi, Andrews, and Gordon, follows as a special case by setting one of the parameters equal to 0. The new identity is equivalent to a four parameter partition theorem which extends the deep theorem of Goellnitz and thereby settles a problem raised by Andrews thirty years ago. Some consequences including a quadruple product extension of Jacobi's triple product identity, and prospects of future research are briefly discussed.

By considering a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4φ_3 summation, we prove a weighted partition theorem involving odd parts differing by >= 4. A two parameter refinement of this theorem is then deduced from a quartic reformulation of Goellnitz's (Big) theorem due to Alladi, and this leads to a two parameter extension of Jacobi's triple product identity for theta functions. Finally, refinements of certain modular identities of Alladi connected to the Goellnitz-Gordon series are shown to follow from a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4φ_3 summation.

We study the chromatic polynomial P_G(q) for m \times n triangular-lattice strips of widths m <= 12_P, 9_F (with periodic or free transverse boundary conditions, respectively) and arbitrary lengths n (with free longitudinal boundary conditions). The chromatic polynomial gives the zero-temperature limit of the partition function for the q-state Potts antiferromagnet. We compute the transfer matrix for such strips in the Fortuin--Kasteleyn representation and obtain the corresponding accumulation sets of chromatic zeros in the complex q-plane in the limit n\to\infty. We recompute the limiting curve obtained by Baxter in the thermodynamic limit m,n\to\infty and find new interesting features with possible physical consequences. Finally, we analyze the isolated limiting points and their relation with the Beraha numbers.
A new way to deal with Izergin-Korepin determinant at root of unity

I consider the partition function of the inhomogeneous 6-vertex model defined on the $n$ by $n$ square lattice. This function depends on 2n spectral parameters $x_i$ and $y_i$ attached to the horizontal and vertical lines respectively. In the case of domain wall boundary conditions it is given by Izergin-Korepin determinant. For $q$ being a root of unity the partition function satisfies to a special linear functional equation. This equation is particularly good when the crossing parameter $η=2π/3$. In this case it can be used for solving some of the problems related to the enumeration of alternating sign matrices. In particular, it is possible to reproduce the refined ASM distribution discovered by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey and proved by Zeilberger. Further, it is well known that the partition function is symmetric in the $\{x\}$ and as well in the $\{y\}$ variables. I have found that in the case of $η=2π/3$, the partition function is symmetric in the union $\{x\} \cup \{y\}$! This nice symmetry is used to find some relations between the numbers of such alternating sign matrices of order $n$ whose two '1' are located in fixed positions on the boundary of the matrices. Finally I derive the equation giving `top-bottom double refined' ASM distribution.

We consider the six-vertex model on an $N \times N$ square lattice with the domain wall boundary conditions. Boundary one-point correlation functions of the model are expressed as determinants of $N\times N$ matrices, generalizing the known result for the partition function. In the free fermion case the explicit answers are obtained. The introduced correlation functions are closely related to the problem of enumeration of alternating sign matrices and domino tilings.

We utilize Dyson's concept of the adjoint of a partition to derive an infinite family of new polynomial analogues of Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorem. We streamline Dyson's bijection relating partitions with crank <= k and those with k in the Rank-Set of partitions. Also, we extend Dyson's adjoint of a partition to MacMahon's ``modular'' partitions with modulus 2. This way we find a new combinatorial proof of Gauss's famous identity. We give a direct combinatorial proof that for n>1 the partitions of n with crank k are equinumerous with partitions of n with crank -k.
