Multiplicities and tensor product coefficients for $A_r$
We apply some recent developments of Baldoni-DeLoera-Vergne on vector partition functions, to Kostant and Steinberg formulas, in the case of $A_r$. We therefore get a fast {\sc Maple} program that computes for $A_r$: the multiplicity $c_{λ,μ}$ of the weight $μ$ in the representation $V(λ)$ of highest weight $λ$; the multiplicity $c_{λ,μ,ν}$ of the representation $V(ν)$ in $V(λ)\otimes V(μ)$. The computation also gives the locally polynomial functions $c_{λ,μ}$ and $c_{λ,μ,ν}$.

We prove an identity about partitions involving new combinatorial coefficients. The proof given is using a generating function. As an application we obtain the explicit expression of two shifted symmetric functions, related with Jack polynomials. These quantities are the moments of the "alpha-content" random variable with respect to some transition probability distributions.

An additive hereditary graph property is a set of graphs, closed under isomorphism and under taking subgraphs and disjoint unions. Let ${\cal P}_1, >..., {\cal P}_n$ be additive hereditary graph properties. A graph $G$ has property $({\cal P}_1 \circ ... \circ {\cal P}_n)$ if there is a partition $(V_1, ..., V_n)$ of $V(G)$ into $n$ sets such that, for all $i$, the induced subgraph $G[V_i]$ is in ${\cal P}_i$. A property ${\cal P}$ is reducible if there are properties ${\cal Q}$, ${\cal R}$ such that ${\cal P} = {\cal Q} \circ {\cal R}$; otherwise it is irreducible. Mihók, Semanišin and Vasky [J. Graph Theory {\bf 33} (2000), 44--53] gave a factorisation for any additive hereditary property ${\cal P}$ into a given number $dc({\cal P})$ of irreducible additive hereditary factors. Mihók [Discuss. Math. Graph Theory {\bf 20} (2000), 143--153] gave a similar factorisation for properties that are additive and induced-hereditary (closed under taking induced-subgraphs and disjoint unions). Their results left open the possiblity of different factorisations, maybe even with a different number of factors; we prove here that the given factorisations are, in fact, unique.

Given a set of positive integers A = {a_1,...,a_n}, we study the number p_A (t) of nonnegative integer solutions (m_1,...,m_n) to m_1 a_1 + ... m_n a_n = t. We derive an explicit formula for the polynomial part of p_A.

We study the Frobenius problem: given relatively prime positive integers a_1,...,a_d, find the largest value of t (the Frobenius number g(a_1,...,a_d)) such that m_1 a_1 + ... m_d a_d = t has no solution in nonnegative integers m_1,...,m_d. We introduce a method to compute upper bounds for g(a_1,a_2,a_3), which seem to grow considerably slower than previously known bounds. Our computations are based on a formula for the restricted partition function, which involves Dedekind-Rademacher sums, and the reciprocity law for these sums.

We present a natural extension of Andrews' multiple sums counting partitions with difference 2 at distance $k-1$, by deriving the generating function for $K$-restricted jagged partitions.
A jagged partition is a collection of non-negative integers $(n_1,n_2,..., n_m)$ with $n_m\geq 1$ subject to the weakly decreasing conditions $n_i\geq n_{i+1}-1$ and $n_i\geq n_{i+2}$. The $K$-restriction refers to the following additional conditions: $n_i \geq n_{i+K-1} +1$ or $ n_i = n_{i+1}-1 = n_{i+K-2}+1= n_{i+K-1}$. The corresponding generalization of the Rogers-Ramunjan identities is displayed, together with a novel combinatorial interpretation.

Denote the sequence ([ (n-x') / x ])_{n=1}^\infty by B(x, x'), a so-called Beatty sequence. Fraenkel's Partition Theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for B(x, x') and B(y, y') to tile the positive integers, i.e., for B(x, x') \cap B(y, y') = \emptyset and B(x, x') \cup B(y, y') = {1,2, 3, ...}. Fix 0 < x < 1, and let c_k = 1 if k \in B(x, 0), and c_k = 0 otherwise, i.e., c_k=[ (k+1) / x ] - [ k / x]. For a positive integer m let C_m be the binary word c_1c_2c_3... c_m. Brown's Decomposition gives integers q_1, q_2, ..., independent of m and growing at least exponentially, and integers t, z_0, z_1, z_2, ..., z_t (depending on m) such that C_m = C_{q_t}^{z_t}C_{q_{t-1}}^{z_{t-1}} ... C_{q_1}^{z_1}C_{q_0}^{z_0}. In other words, Brown's Decomposition gives a sparse set of initial segments of C_\infty and an explicit decomposition of C_m (for every m) into a product of these initial segments.

The quantity $f(n,r)$, defined as the number of permutations of the set $[n]=\{1,2,... n\}$ whose fixed points sum to $r$, shows a sharp discontinuity in the neighborhood of $r=n$. We explain this discontinuity and study the possible existence of other discontinuities in $f(n,r)$ for permutations. We generalize our results to other families of structures that exhibit the same kind of discontinuities, by studying $f(n,r)$ when ``fixed points'' is replaced by ``components of size 1'' in a suitable graph of the structure. Among the objects considered are permutations, all functions and set partitions.

A technique called graphical condensation is used to prove various combinatorial identities among numbers of (perfect) matchings of planar bipartite graphs and tilings of regions. Graphical condensation involves superimposing matchings of a graph onto matchings of a smaller subgraph, and then re-partitioning the united matching (actually a multigraph) into matchings of two other subgraphs, in one of two possible ways. This technique can be used to enumerate perfect matchings of a wide variety of bipartite planar graphs. Applications include domino tilings of Aztec diamonds and rectangles, diabolo tilings of fortresses, plane partitions, and transpose complement plane partitions.

In 1989, Vaughan Jones introduced spin models and showed that they could be used to form link invariants in two different ways--by constructing representations of the braid group, or by constructing partition functions. These spin models were subsequently generalized to so-called 4-weight spin models by Bannai and Bannai; these could be used to construct partition functions, but did not lead to braid group representations in any obvious way. Jaeger showed that spin models were intimately related to certain association schemes. Yamada gave a construction of a symmetric spin model on $4n$ vertices from each 4-weight spin model on $n$ vertices.
In this paper we build on recent work with Munemasa to give a different proof to Yamada's result, and we analyse the structure of the association scheme attached to this spin model.

The number of solid partitions of a positive integer is an unsolved problem in combinatorial number theory. In this paper, solid partitions are studied numerically by the method of exact enumeration for integers up to 50 and by Monte Carlo simulations using Wang-Landau sampling method for integers up to 8000. It is shown that, for large n, ln[p(n)]/n^(3/4) = 1.79 \pm 0.01, where p(n) is the number of solid partitions of the integer n. This result strongly suggests that the MacMahon conjecture for solid partitions, though not exact, could still give the correct leading asymptotic behaviour.

Using twisted Fock spaces, we formulate and study two twisted versions of the n-point correlation functions of Bloch-Okounkov, and then identify them with q-expectation values of certain functions on the set of (odd) strict partitions. We find closed formulas for the 1-point functions in both cases in terms of Jacobi theta functions. These correlation functions afford several distinct interpretations.

Let $GL_M$ be general linear Lie group over the complex field. The irreducible rational representations of the group $GL_M$ are labeled by pairs of partitions $μ$ and $\tildeμ$ such that the total number of non-zero parts of $μ$ and $\tildeμ$ does not exceed $M$. Let $U$ be the representation of $GL_M$ corresponding to such a pair. Regard the direct product $GL_N\times GL_M$ as a subgroup of $GL_{N+M}$. Let $V$ be the irreducible rational representation of the group $GL_{N+M}$ corresponding to a pair of partitions $λ$ and $\tildeλ$. Consider the vector space $W=Hom_{G_M}(U,V)$. It comes with a natural action of the group $GL_N$. Let $n$ be sum of parts of $λ$ less the sum of parts of $μ$. Let $\tilde{n}$ be sum of parts of $\tildeλ$ less the sum of parts of $\tildeμ$. For any choice of two standard Young tableaux of skew shapes $λ/μ$ and $\tildeλ/\tildeμ$ respectively, we realize $W$ as a subspace in the tensor product of $n$ copies of the defining $N$-dimensional representation of $GL_N$, and of $\tilde{n}$ copies of the contragredient representation. This subspace is determined as the image of a certain linear operator $F$ in the tensor product, given by explicit multiplicative formula. When M=0 and $W=V$ is an irreducible representation of $GL_N$, we recover the classical realization of $V$ as a subspace in the space of all traceless tensors. Then the operator $F$ can be regarded as the rational analogue of the Young symmetrizer, corresponding to the chosen standard tableau of shape $λ$. Even in the special case M=0, our formula for the operator $F$ is new. Our results are applications of representation theory of the Yangian of the Lie algebra $gl_N$.

We prove that $$\int_0^1\frac{-\log f(x)}xdx=\frac{π^2}{3ab}$$ where $f(x)$ is the decreasing function that satisfies $f^a-f^b=x^a-x^b$, for $0<a<b$. When $a$ is an integer and $b=a+1$ we deduce several combinatorial results. These include an asymptotic formula for the number of integer partitions not having $a$ consecutive parts, and a formula for the metastability thresholds of a class of threshold growth cellular automaton models related to bootstrap percolation.
Particle content of the (k,3)-configurations

For all $k$, we construct a bijection between the set of sequences of non-negative integers ${\bf a}=(a_i)_{i\in{\bf Z}_{\geq0}}$ satisfying $a_i+a_{i+1}+a_{i+2}\leq k$ and the set of rigged partitions $(λ,ρ)$. Here $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_n)$ is a partition satisfying $k\geqλ_1\geq...\geqλ_n\geq1$ and $ρ=(ρ_1,...,ρ_n)\in{\bf Z}_{\geq0}^n$ is such that $ρ_j\geqρ_{j+1}$ if $λ_j=λ_{j+1}$. One can think of $λ$ as the particle content of the configuration ${\bf a}$ and $ρ_j$ as the energy level of the $j$-th particle, which has the weight $λ_j$. The total energy $\sum_iia_i$ is written as the sum of the two-body interaction term $\sum_{j<j'}A_{λ_j,λ_{j'}}$ and the free part $\sum_jρ_j$. The bijection implies a fermionic formula for the one-dimensional configuration sums $\sum_{\bf a}q^{\sum_iia_i}$. We also derive the polynomial identities which describe the configuration sums corresponding to the configurations with prescribed values for $a_0$ and $a_1$, and such that $a_i=0$ for all $i>N$.
Statistics of non-interacting bosons and fermions in micro-canonical, canonical and grand-canonical ensembles: A survey
The statistical properties of non-interacting bosons and fermions confined in trapping potentials are most easily obtained when the system may exchange energy and particles with a large reservoir (grand-canonical ensemble). There are circumstances, however, where the system under consideration may be considered as being isolated (micro-canonical ensemble). This paper first reviews results relating to micro-canonical ensembles. Some of them were obtained a long time ago, particularly by Khinchin in 1950. Others were obtained only recently, often motivated by experimental results relating to atomic confinement. A number of formulas are reported for the first time in the present paper. Formulas applicable to the case where the system may exchange energy but not particles with a reservoir (canonical ensemble) are derived from the micro-canonical ensemble expressions. The differences between the three ensembles tend to vanish in the so-called Thermodynamics limit, that is, when the number of particles and the volume go to infinity while the particle number density remains constant. But we are mostly interested in systems of moderate size, often referred to as being mesoscopic, where the grand-canonical formalism is not applicable. The mathematical results rest primarily on the enumeration of partitions of numbers.
Avoidable sets in groups
In a set equipped with a binary operation, (S,*), a subset U is defined to be avoidable if there exists a partition {A,B} of S such that no element of U is the product of two distinct elements of A or of two distinct elements of B. For more than two decades, avoidable sets in the natural numbers (under addition) have been studied by renowned mathematicians such as Erdos, and a few families of sets have been shown to be avoidable in that setting. In this paper we investigate the generalized notion of an avoidable set and determine the avoidable sets in several families of groups; previous work in this field considered only the case (S, *) = (N, +).
Poset Edge-Labellings and Left Modularity

It is known that a graded lattice of rank n is supersolvable if and only if it has an EL-labelling where the labels along any maximal chain are exactly the numbers 1,2,...,n without repetition. These labellings are called S_n EL-labellings, and having such a labelling is also equivalent to possessing a maximal chain of left modular elements. In the case of an ungraded lattice, there is a natural extension of S_n EL-labellings, called interpolating labellings. We show that admitting an interpolating labelling is again equivalent to possessing a maximal chain of left modular elements. Furthermore, we work in the setting of a general bounded poset as all the above results generalize to this case. We conclude by applying our results to show that the lattice of non-straddling partitions, which is not graded in general, has a maximal chain of left modular elements.
Z-measures on partitions and their scaling limits

We study certain probability measures on partitions of n=1,2,..., originated in representation theory, and demonstrate their connections with random matrix theory and multivariate hypergeometric functions.
Our measures depend on three parameters including an analog of the beta parameter in random matrix models. Under an appropriate limit transition as n goes to infinity, our measures converge to certain limit measures, which are of the same nature as one-dimensional log-gas with arbitrary beta>0.
The first main result says that averages of products of ``characteristic polynomials'' with respect to the limit measures are given by the multivariate hypergeometric functions of type (2,0). The second main result is a computation of the limit correlation functions for the even values of beta.
Poisson-Kingman partitions

This paper presents some general formulas for random partitions of a finite set derived by Kingman's model of random sampling from an interval partition generated by subintervals whose lengths are the points of a Poisson point process. These lengths can be also interpreted as the jumps of a subordinator, that is an increasing process with stationary independent increments. Examples include the two-parameter family of Poisson-Dirichlet models derived from the Poisson process of jumps of a stable subordinator. Applications are made to the random partition generated by the lengths of excursions of a Brownian motion or Brownian bridge conditioned on its local time at zero.
