New polynomial analogues of Jacobi's triple product and Lebesgue's identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper by the authors, a bounded version of Goellnitz's (big) partition theorem was established. Here we show among other things how this theorem leads to nontrivial new polynomial analogues of certain fundamental identities of Jacobi and Lebesgue. We also derive a two parameter extension of Jacobi's famous triple product identity.

Combinatorics and Topology of partitions of spherical measures by 2 and 3 fans
An arrangement of k-semilines in the Euclidean (projective) plane or on the 2-sphere is called a k-fan if all semilines start from the same point. A k-fan is an $α$-partition for a probability measure $μ$ if $μ(σ_i)=α_i$ for each $i=1,...,k$ where $\{σ_i\}_{i=1}^k$ are conical sectors associated with the k-fan and $α= (α_1,... ,α_k)$. The set of all $α= (α_1,... ,α_m)$ such that for any collection of probability measures $μ_1,... ,μ_m$ there exists a common $α$-partition by a k-fan is denoted by ${\cal A}_{m,k}$. We prove, as a central result of this paper, that ${\cal A}_{3,2} = \{(s,t)\in \mathbb{R}^2\mid s+t=1 {\rm and} s,t>0\}$. The result follows from the fact that under mild conditions there does not exist a $Q_{4n}$-equivariant map $f : S^3\to V\setminus {\cal A}(α)$ where ${\cal A}(α)$ is a $Q_{4n}$-invariant, linear subspace arrangement in a $Q_{4n}$-representation V, where $Q_{4n}$ is the generalized quaternion group. This fact is established by showing that an appropriate obstruction in the group $Ω_1(Q_{4n})$ of $Q_{4n}$-bordisms does not vanish.

Residue formulae for vector partitions and Euler-MacLaurin sums
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite set of vectors spanning a lattice and lying in a halfspace of a real vector space, to each vector $a$ in this vector space one can associate a polytope consisting of nonnegative linear combinations of the vectors in the set which sum up to $a$. This polytope is called the partition polytope of $a$. If $a$ is integral, this polytope contains a finite set of lattice points corresponding to nonnegative integral linear combinations. The partition polytope associated to an integral $a$ is a rational convex polytope, and any rational convex polytope can be realized canonically as a partition polytope. We consider the problem of counting the number of lattice points in partition polytopes, or, more generally, computing sums of values of exponential-polynomial functions on the lattice points in such polytopes. We give explicit formulae for these quantities using a notion of multi-dimensional residue due to Jeffrey-Kirwan. We show, in particular, that the dependence of these quantities on $a$ is exponential-polynomial on "large neighborhoods" of chambers. Our method relies on a theorem of separation of variables for the generating function, or, more generally, for periodic meromorphic functions with poles on an arrangement of affine hyperplanes.

Equitable coloring of k-uniform hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices. A {\em strong $r$-coloring} is a partition of the vertices into $r$ parts, such that each edge of $H$ intersects each part. A strong $r$-coloring is called {\em equitable} if the size of each part is $\lceil n/r \rceil$ or $\lfloor n/r \rfloor$. We prove that for all $a \geq 1$, if the maximum degree of $H$ satisfies $Δ(H) \leq k^a$ then $H$ has an equitable coloring with $\frac{k}{a \ln k}(1-o_k(1))$ parts. In particular, every $k$-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $O(k)$ has an equitable coloring with $\frac{k}{\ln k}(1-o_k(1))$ parts. The result is asymptotically tight. The proof uses a double application of the non-symmetric version of the Lovász Local Lemma.

Addendum to `Bosonic formulas for $(k,l)$-admissible partitions'
Published • View PublicationBIB
In our earlier paper we made a combinatorial study of (k,l)-admissible partitions. This object appeared already in the work of M. Primc as a label of a basis of level k-integrable modules over $\hat{sl}_l$. We clarify the relation between these two works. As a byproduct we obtain an explicit parameterization of the affine Weyl group of $\hat{sl}_l$ by a simple combinatorial set.

Dedekind sums: a combinatorial-geometric viewpoint
Published in M. B. Nathanson (ed.), Unusual Applications of Number Theory, DIMACS: Series in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science 64 (2004), 25-35 • View PublicationBIB
The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Critical resonance in the non-intersecting lattice path model
Published in Probability Theory and Related Fields 130(3):289--318, 2004 • View PublicationBIB
We study the phase transition in the honeycomb dimer model (equivalently, monotone non-intersecting lattice path model). At the critical point the system has a strong long-range dependence; in particular, periodic boundary conditions give rise to a ``resonance'' phenomenon, where the partition function and other properties of the system depend sensitively on the shape of the domain.

Schur function identities, their t-analogs, and k-Schur irreducibility
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain general identities for the product of two Schur functions in the case where one of the functions is indexed by a rectangular partition, and give their t-analogs using vertex operators. We study subspaces forming a filtration for the symmetric function space that lends itself to generalizing the theory of Schur functions and also provides a convenient environment for studying the Macdonald polynomials. We use our identities to prove that the vertex operators leave such subspaces invariant. We finish by showing that these operators act simply on the k-Schur functions, thus leading to a concept of irreducibility for these functions.

Schur function analogs for a filtration of the symmetric function space
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a filtration of the symmetric function space given by $Λ^{(k)}_t$, the linear span of Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$. We introduce symmetric functions called the $k$-Schur functions, providing an analog for the Schur functions in the subspaces $Λ^{(k)}_t$. We prove several properties for the $k$-Schur functions including that they form a basis for these subspaces that reduces to the Schur basis when $k$ is large. We also show that the connection coefficients for the $k$-Schur function basis with the Macdonald polynomials belonging to $Λ^{(k)}_t$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ with integral coefficients. In fact, we conjecture that these integral coefficients are actually positive, and give several other conjectures generalizing Schur function theory.

Topology of spaces of hyperbolic polynomials and combinatorics of resonances
Published in Israel J. Math. 132 (2002), 189--206. • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the topology of the strata, indexed by number partitions $λ$, in the natural stratification of the space of monic hyperbolic polynomials of degree $n$. We prove stabilization theorems for removing an independent block or an independent relation in $λ$. We also prove contractibility of the one-point compactifications of the strata indexed by a large class of number partitions, including $λ=(k^m,1^r)$, for $m\geq 2$. Furthermore, we study the maps between the homology groups of the strata, induced by imposing additional relations (resonances) on the number partition $λ$, or by merging some of the blocks of $λ$.

Rational homology of spaces of complex monic polynomials with multiple roots
Published in Mathematika 49 (2002), no. 1-2, 77--91 (2004). • View PublicationBIB
We study rational homology groups of one-point compactifications of spaces of complex monic polynomials with multiple roots. These spaces are indexed by number partitions. A standard reformulation in terms of quotients of orbit arrangements reduces the problem to studying certain triangulated spaces $X_{λ,μ}$. We present a combinatorial description of the cell structure of $X_{λ,μ}$ using the language of marked forests. As applications we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Arnold and a counterexample to a conjecture of Sundaram and Welker, along with a few other smaller results.

Self-Dual Symmetric Polynomials and Conformal Partitions
A conformal partition function ${\cal P}_n^m(s)$, which arose in the theory of Diophantine equations supplemented with additional restrictions, is concerned with {\it self-dual symmetric polynomials} -- reciprocal ${\sf R}^{\{m\}}_ {S_n}$ and skew-reciprocal ${\sf S}^{\{m\}}_{S_n}$ algebraic polynomials based on the polynomial invariants of the symmetric group $S_n$. These polynomials form an infinite commutative semigroup. Real solutions $λ_n(x_i)$ of corresponding algebraic Eqns have many important properties: homogeneity of 1-st order, duality upon the action of the conformal group ${\sf W}$, inverting both function $λ_n$ and the variables $x_i$, compatibility with trivial solution, {\it etc}. Making use of the relationship between Gaussian generating function for conformal partitions and Molien generating function for usual restricted partitions we derived the analytic expressions for ${\cal P}_n^m(s)$. The unimodality indices for the reciprocal and skew-reciprocal equations were found. The existence of algebraic functions $λ_n(x_i)$ invariant upon the action of both the finite group $G\subset S_n$ and conformal group ${\sf W}$ is discussed.

Nouvelles statistiques de partitions pour les q-nombres de Stirling de seconde espece

Steingrimsson has recently introduced a partition analogue of Foata-Zeilberger's mak statistic for permutations and conjectured that its generating function is equal to the classical q-Stirling numbers of second kind. In this paper we prove a generalization of Steingrimsson's conjecture.

Discrete gap probabilities and discrete Painleve equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that Fredholm determinants of the form det(1-K_s), where K_s is the restriction of either the discrete Bessel kernel or the discrete {}_2F_1 kernel to {s,s+1,...}, can be expressed through solutions of discrete Painleve II and V equations, respectively. These Fredholm determinants can also be viewed as distribution functions of the first part of the random partitions distributed according to a poissonized Plancherel measure and a z-measure, or as normalized Toeplitz determinants with symbols exp(η(u+1/u)) and (1+u)^z(1+ξ/u)^{z'}. The proofs are based on a general formalism involving discrete integrable operators and discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem. A continuous version of the formalism has been worked out in math-ph/0111007.
S-partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This note reports on the number of s-partitions of a natural number n. In an s-partition each cell has the form $2^k-1$ for some integer k. Such partitions have potential applications in cryptography, specifically in distributed computations of the form $a^n$ mod m. The main contribution of this paper is a correction to the upper bound on the number of s-partitions presented by Bhatt. We will give a precise asymptotics for the number of such partitions for a given integer n.

Random partitions with non negative rth differences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $P_r(n)$ be the set of partitions of n with non negative rth differences. Let $λ$ be a partition chosen uniformly at random among the set $P_r(n)$. Let $d(λ)$ be a positive rth difference chosen uniformly at random in $λ$. The aim of this work is to show that for every $m\ge 1$, the probability that $d(λ)\ge m$ approaches $m^{-1/r}$ as $n\to\infty$. To prove this result we use bijective, asymptotic/analytic, and probabilistic combinatorics.

A new partition identity coming from complex dynamics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new identity involving compositions (i.e. ordered partitions of natural numbers). The Formula has its origin in complex dynamical systems and appears when counting, in the polynomial family $\{f_c:z \mapsto z^d + c \}$, periodic critical orbits with equivalent itineraries. We give two different proofs of the identity; one following the original approach in dynamics and another with purely combinatorial methods.

Free cumulants and enumeration of connected partitions
Published in European J. Combin. 23 (2002), no. 8, 1025--1031 • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial formula is derived which expresses free cumulants in terms of classical comulants. As a corollary, we give a combinatorial interpretation of free cumulants of classical distributions, notably Gaussian and Poisson distributions. The latter count connected pairings and connected set partitions respectively. The proof relies on Moebius inversion on the partition lattice.
