Graph Automorphisms from the Geometric Viewpoint
An automorphism of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a bijective map $φ$ from $V$ to itself such that $φ(v_i)φ(v_j)\in E$ $\Leftrightarrow$ $v_i v_j\in E$ for any two vertices $v_i$ and $v_j$. Denote by $\mathfrak{G}$ the group consisting of all automorphisms of $G$. Apparently, an automorphism of $G$ can be regarded as a permutation on $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$, provided that $G$ has $n$ vertices. For each permutation $σ$ on $[n]$, there is a natural action on any given vector $\boldsymbol{u}=(u_1,\ldots,u_n)^t\in \mathbb{C}^n$ such that $σ\boldsymbol{u}=(u_{σ^{-1}1},u_{σ^{-1}2},\ldots,u_{σ^{-1} n})^t$, so $σ$ can be viewed as a linear operator on $\mathbb{C}^n$. Accordingly, one can formulate a characterization to the automorphisms of $G$, {\it i.e.,} $σ$ is an automorphism of $G$ if and only if every eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is $σ$-invariant, where $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. Consequently, every eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is $\mathfrak{G}$-invariant, which is equivalent to that for any eigenvector $\boldsymbol{v}$ of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ corresponding to the eigenvalue $λ$, $\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ is a subspace of the eigenspace $V_λ$. By virtue of the linear representation of the automorphism group $\mathfrak{G}$, we characterize those extremal vectors $\boldsymbol{v}$ in an eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ so that $\mathrm{dim}~\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ can attain extremal values, and furthermore, we determine the exact value of $\mathrm{dim}~\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ for any eigenvector $\boldsymbol{v}$ of $\mathbf{A}(G)$.

A product formula for the TASEP on a ring
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a random permutation sampled from the stationary distribution of the TASEP on a ring, we show that, conditioned on the event that the first entries are strictly larger than the last entries, the order of the first entries is independent of the order of the last entries. The proof uses multi-line queues as defined by Ferrari and Martin, and the theorem has an enumerative combinatorial interpretation in that setting. Finally, we present a conjecture for the case where the small and large entries are not separated.
A Class of Kazhdan-Lusztig R-Polynomials and q-Fibonacci Numbers
Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. For two permutations $u, v\in S_n$ such that $u\leq v$ in the Bruhat order, let $R_{u,v}(q)$ and $\R_{u,v}(q)$ denote the Kazhdan-Lusztig $R$-polynomial and $\R$-polynomial, respectively. Let $v_n=34\cdots n\, 12$, and let $σ$ be a permutation such that $σ\leq v_n$. We obtain a formula for the $\R$-polynomials $\R_{σ,v_n}(q)$ in terms of the $q$-Fibonacci numbers depending on a parameter determined by the reduced expression of $σ$. When $σ$ is the identity $e$, this reduces to a formula obtained by Pagliacci. In another direction, we obtain a formula for the $\R$-polynomial $\R_{e,\,v_{n,i}}(q)$, where $v_{n,i} = 3 4\cdots i\,n\, (i+1)\cdots (n-1)\, 12$. In a more general context, we conjecture that for any two permutations $σ,τ\in S_n$ such that $σ\leq τ\leq v_n$, the $\R$-polynomial $\R_{σ,τ}(q)$ can be expressed as a product of $q$-Fibonacci numbers multiplied by a power of $q$.

Cyclically consecutive permutation avoidance
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit formula for the number of permutations avoiding cyclically a consecutive pattern in terms of the spectrum of the associated operator of the consecutive pattern. As an example, the number of cyclically consecutive $123$-avoiding permutations in ${\mathfrak S}_{n}$ is given by $n!$ times the convergent series ${\displaystyle \sum_{k=-\infty}^{\infty} \left(\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2π(k+1/3)}\right)^{n}}$ for $n \geq 2$.

Descent pattern avoidance
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 49 (2012), 375--390 • View PublicationBIB
We extend the notion of consecutive pattern avoidance to considering sums over all permutations where each term is a product of weights depending on each consecutive pattern of a fixed length. We study the problem of finding the asymptotics of these sums. Our technique is to extend the spectral method of Ehrenborg, Kitaev and Perry. When the weight depends on the descent pattern we show how to find the equation determining the spectrum. We give two length $4$ applications. First, we find the asymptotics of the number of permutations with no triple ascents and no triple descents. Second, we give the asymptotics of the number of permutations with no isolated ascents or descents. Our next result is a weighted pattern of length $3$ where the associated operator only has one non-zero eigenvalue. Using generating functions we show that the error term in the asymptotic expression is the smallest possible.

The topology of restricted partition posets
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 37 (2013), 643--666 • View PublicationBIB
For each composition $\vec{c}$ we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions $Π^{\bullet}_{\vec{c}}$ is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition $\vec{c}$. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module $S^{B}$ where $B$ is a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by a knapsack integer partition and show the analogous results on homotopy type and action on the top homology.

The Combinatorics of $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The nonelliptic $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs with $k$ "$+$"s on the top boundary and $3n-2k$ "$-$"s on the bottom boundary combinatorially model the space $\mathsf{Hom}_{\mathfrak{sl}_3}(\mathsf{V}^{\otimes (3n-2k)}, \mathsf{V}^{\otimes k})$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module maps on tensor powers of the natural $3$-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module $\mathsf{V}$, and they have connections with the combinatorics of Springer varieties. Petersen, Pylyavskyy, and Rhodes showed that the set of such $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs and the set of semistandard tableaux of shape $(3^n)$ and type $\{1^2,\dots,k^2,k+1,\dots, 3n-k\}$ have the same cardinalities. In this work, we use the $\sf{m}$-diagrams introduced by Tymoczko and the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to construct an explicit bijection, different from the one given by Russell, between these two sets. In establishing our result, we show that the pair of standard tableaux constructed using the notion of path depth is the same as the pair constructed from applying the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to a $3\,2\,1$-avoiding permutation. We also obtain a bijection between such pairs of standard tableaux and Westbury's $\mathsf{A_2}$ flow diagrams.

Permutation polynomials induced from permutations of subfields, and some complete sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares
We present a general technique for obtaining permutation polynomials over a finite field from permutations of a subfield. By applying this technique to the simplest classes of permutation polynomials on the subfield, we obtain several new families of permutation polynomials. Some of these have the additional property that both f(x) and f(x)+x induce permutations of the field, which has combinatorial consequences. We use some of our permutation polynomials to exhibit complete sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares. In addition, we solve the open problem from a recent paper by Wu and Lin, and we give simpler proofs of much more general versions of the results in two other recent papers.

Minimally intersecting filling pairs on surfaces
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 15 (2015) 903-932 • View PublicationBIB
Let $S_{g}$ denote the closed orientable surface of genus $g$. We construct exponentially many mapping class group orbits of pairs of simple closed curves which fill $S_{g}$ and intersect minimally, by showing that such orbits are in correspondence with the solutions of a certain permutation equation in the symmetric group. Next, we demonstrate that minimally intersecting filling pairs are combinatorially optimal, in the sense that there are many simple closed curves intersecting the pair exactly once. We conclude by initiating the study of a topological Morse function $\mathcal{F}_{g}$ over the Moduli space of Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, which, given a hyperbolic metric $σ$, outputs the length of the shortest, minimally intersecting filling pair for the metric $σ$. We completely characterize the global minima of $\mathcal{F}_{g}$, and using the exponentially many mapping class group orbits of minimally intersecting filling pairs that we construct in the first portion of the paper, we show that the number of such minima grow at least exponentially in $g$.

An upper bound on the sum of signs of permutations with a condition on their prefix sets
The following Proposition is a positive answer to a question about cancellations between permutations that arises in a model problem in the many body theory of Fermions. It concerns the mathematically rigorous implementation of the Pauli exclusion principle.

Random Permutations, Random Sudoku Matrices and Randomized Algorithms

Some randomized algorithms, used to obtain a random $n^2 \times n^2$ Sudoku matrix, where $n$ is a natural number, is reviewed in this study. Below is described the set $Π_n$ of all $(2n) \times n$ matrices, consisting of elements of the set $\mathbb{Z}_n =\{ 1,2,\ldots ,n\}$, such that every row is a permutation. It is proved that such matrices would be particularly useful in developing efficient algorithms in generating Sudoku matrices. An algorithm to obtain random $Π_n$ matrices is presented in this paper. The algorithms are evaluated according to two criteria - probability evaluation, and time evaluation. This type of criteria is interesting from both theoretical and practical point of view because they are particularly useful in the analysis of computer programs.

Polynomial properties of Jack connection coefficients and generalization of a result by Dénes
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is devoted to the computation of Jack connection coefficients, a generalization of the connection coefficients of two classical commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group: the class algebra and the double coset algebra. The connection coefficients of these two algebraic structures are of significant interest in the study of Schur and zonal polynomials as well as the irreducible characters of the symmetric group and the zonal spherical functions. Furthermore they play an important role in combinatorics as they give the number of factorizations of a permutation into a product of permutations with given cyclic properties. Usually studied separately, these two families of coefficients share strong similar properties. First (partially) introduced by Goulden and Jackson in 1996, Jack connection coefficients provide a natural unified approach closely related to the theory of Jack polynomials, a family of bases in the ring of symmetric functions indexed by a parameter αthat generalizes both Schur (case α= 1) and zonal polynomials (case α= 2). Jack connection coefficients are also directly linked to Jack characters, a general view of the characters of the symmetric group and the zonal spherical functions. Goulden and Jackson conjectured that these coefficients are polynomials in αwith nice combinatorial properties, the so-called Matchings-Jack conjecture. In this paper, we use the theory of Jack symmetric functions and the Laplace Beltrami operator to show the polynomial properties of Jack connection coefficients in some important cases. We also provide explicit formulations including notably a generalization of a classical formula of Dénes for the number of minimal factorizations of a permutation into transpositions.

Maximum Intersecting Families of Permutations
It was first shown by Cameron and Ku that the group $G=Sym(n)$ has the strict EKR property. Then Godsil and Meagher presented an entirely different proof of this fact using some algebraic properties of the symmetric group. A similar method was employed to prove that the projective general linear group $PGL(2,q)$, with its natural action on the projective line $\mathbb{P}_q$, has the strict EKR property. The main objective in this thesis is to formally introduce this method, which we call the module method, and show that this provides a standard way to prove Erdos-Ko-Rado theorems for other permutation groups. We then, along with proving Erdos-Ko-Rado theorems for various groups, use this method to prove some permutation groups have the strict EKR property. We will also show that this method can be useful in characterizing the maximum independent sets of some Cayley graphs. To explain the module method, we need some facts from representation theory of groups, in particular, the symmetric group. We will provide the reader with a sufficient level of background from representation theory as well as graph theory and linear algebraic facts about graphs.

A diagram algebra for Soergel modules corresponding to smooth Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using combinatorial properties of symmetric polynomials, we compute explicitly the Soergel modules for some permutations whose corresponding Schubert varieties are rationally smooth. We build from them diagram algebras whose module categories are equivalent to the subquotient categories of the BGG category $\mathcal{O}(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ which show up in categorification of $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$-representations. We construct diagrammatically the graded cellular structure and the properly stratified structure of these algebras.

A generalization of the quadrangulation relation to constellations and hypermaps
Published in J. Combin. Theory A 127 (2014) 1-21 • View PublicationBIB
Constellations and hypermaps generalize combinatorial maps, i.e. embedding of graphs in a surface, in terms of factorization of permutations. In this paper, we extend a result of Jackson and Visentin (1990) stating an enumerative relation between quadrangulations and bipartite quadrangulations. We show a similar relation between hypermaps and constellations by using a result of Littlewood on factorization of characters. A combinatorial proof of Littlewood's result is also given. Furthermore, we show that coefficients in our relation are all positive integers, hinting possibility of a combinatorial interpretation. Using this enumerative relation, we recover a result on the asymptotic behavior of hypermaps in Chapuy (2009).

The Erdős-Ko-Rado property for some permutation groups
A subset in a group $G \leq Sym(n)$ is intersecting if for any pair of permutations $π,σ$ in the subset there is an $i \in \{1,2,\dots,n\}$ such that $π(i) = σ(i)$. If the stabilizer of a point is the largest intersecting set in a group, we say that the group has the Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) property. Moreover, the group has the strict EKR property if every intersecting set of maximum size in the group is either the stabilizer of a point or the coset of the stabilizer of a point. In this paper we look at several families of permutation groups and determine if the groups have either the EKR property or the strict EKR property. First, we prove that all cyclic groups have the strict EKR property. Next we show that all dihedral and Frobenius groups have the EKR property and we characterize which ones have the strict EKR property. Further, we show that if all the groups in an external direct sum or an internal direct sum have the EKR (or strict EKR) property, then the product does as well. Finally, we show that the wreath product of two groups with EKR property also has the EKR property.

Enumerating lattices of subsets
Given k sets such that no one is contained in another, there is an associated lattice on the power set P([k]) corresponding to inclusion relations among unions of the sets. Two lattices on P([k]) are equivalent if there is a permutation of [k] under which they correspond. We show that for k=1, 2, 3, and 4, there are 1, 1, 4, and 50 equivalence classes of lattices on P([k]) obtained from sets in this way. We cannot find a reference to previous work on this enumeration problem in the literature, and so wish to introduce it for subsequent investigation. We explain how the problem arose from algebraic topology.

Random generators of the symmetric group: diameter, mixing time and spectral gap
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $g$, $h$ be a random pair of generators of $G=Sym(n)$ or $G=Alt(n)$. We show that, with probability tending to $1$ as $n\to \infty$, (a) the diameter of $G$ with respect to $S = \{g,h,g^{-1},h^{-1}\}$ is at most $O(n^2 (\log n)^c)$, and (b) the mixing time of $G$ with respect to $S$ is at most $O(n^3 (\log n)^c)$. (Both $c$ and the implied constants are absolute.) These bounds are far lower than the strongest worst-case bounds known (in Helfgott--Seress, 2013); they roughly match the worst known examples. We also give an improved, though still non-constant, bound on the spectral gap. Our results rest on a combination of the algorithm in (Babai--Beals--Seress, 2004) and the fact that the action of a pair of random permutations is almost certain to act as an expander on $\ell$-tuples, where $\ell$ is an arbitrary constant (Friedman et al., 1998).

Combinatorics of simple marked mesh patterns in 132-avoiding permutations
We present some combinatorial interpretations for coefficients appearing in series partitioning the permutations avoiding 132 along marked mesh patterns. We identify for patterns in which only one parameter is non zero the combinatorial family in bijection with 132-avoiding permutations and also preserving the statistic counted by the marked mesh pattern.
