Graph Cohomologies from Arbitrary Algebras
For each commutative, graded algebra with finite dimension in each degree, we construct a graded cohomology theory for graphs whose graded Euler characteristic is the chromatic polynomial of the graph. This extends our previous work which was based on the algebra $\mathbb {Z}[x]/(x^2)$.
On the expansion of the power of any polynomial 1+x+x^2+x^3+x^4+etc
In this paper, Euler gives the general trionomial coefficient as a sum of the binomial coefficients, the general quadrinomial coefficient as a sum of the binomial and trinomial coefficients, the general quintonomial coefficient as a sum of the binomial and quadrinomial coefficients, and gives a general determination of the coefficients of the expansion of any polynomial (1+x+x^2+...+x^m)^n as a sum of the coefficients of lower degree polynomial coefficients.

Kerov considered the normalized characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group, evaluated on a cycle, as a polynomial in free cumulants. Biane has proved that this polynomial has integer coefficients, and made various conjectures. Recently, Sniady has proved Biane's conjectured explicit form for the first family of nontrivial terms in this polynomial. In this paper, we give an explicit expression for all terms in Kerov's character polynomials. Our method is through Lagrange inversion.

We obtain several determinant evaluations, related to affine root systems, which provide elliptic extensions of Weyl denominator formulas. Some of these are new, also in the polynomial special case, while others yield new proofs of the Macdonald identities for the seven infinite families of irreducible reduced affine root systems.
Contractors and connectors of graph algebras
We study generalizations of the "contraction-deletion" relation of the Tutte polynomial, and other similar simple operations, to other graph parameters. The question can be set in the framework of graph algebras introduced by Freedman, Lovasz and Schrijver, and it relates to their behavior under basic graph operations like contraction and subdivision.
Graph algebras were introduced to study and characterize homomorphism functions. We prove that for homomorphism functions, these graph algebras have special elements called ``contractors'' and ``connectors''. This gives a new characterization of homomorphism functions.

We define an algorithm k which takes a connected graph G on a totally ordered vertex set and returns an increasing tree R (which is not necessarily a subtree of G). We characterize the set of graphs G such that k(G)=R. Because this set has a simple structure (it is isomorphic to a product of non-empty power sets), it is easy to evaluate certain graph invariants in terms of increasing trees. In particular, we prove that, up to sign, the coefficient of x^q in the chromatic polynomial of G is the number of increasing forests with q components that satisfy a condition that we call G-connectedness. We also find a bijection between increasing G-connected trees and broken circuit free subtrees of G.

Enumerating ramified coverings of the sphere with fixed ramification types is a well-known problem first considered by A. Hurwitz. Up to now, explicit solutions have been obtained only for some families of ramified coverings, for instant, those realized by polynomials in one complex variable. In this paper we obtain an explicit answer for a large new family of coverings, namely, the coverings realized by simple almost polynomials, defined below. Unlike most other results in the field, our formula is obtained by elementary methods.

A Gotzmann monomial ideal of the polynomial ring is a monomial ideal which is generated in one degree and which satisfies Gotzmann's persistence theorem. A subset $V$ is said to be a Gotzmann subset if the ideal generated by $V$ is a Gotzmann monomial ideal. In the present paper, we find all integers $a>0$ such that every Gotzmann subset $V$ with $|V|=a$ is lexsegment (up to the permutation of the variables). In addition, we classify all Gotzmann subsets of $K[x_1,x_2,x_3]$.

Given two polynomials f(x) and g(x), we extend the formula expressing the remainder in terms of the roots of these two polynomials to the case where f(x) is a Laurent polynomial. This allows us to give new expressions of a Schur function, which generalize the Giambelli identity.

We study the connection between stringy Betti numbers of Gorenstein toric varieties and the generating functions of the Ehrhart polynomials of certain polyhedral regions. We use this point of view to give counterexamples to Hibi's conjecture on the unimodality of delta-vectors of reflexive polytopes.

We present a polynomial time algorithm to compute any fixed number of the highest coefficients of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational simplex. Previously such algorithms were known for integer simplices and for rational polytopes of a fixed dimension. The algorithm is based on the formula relating the kth coefficient of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope to volumes of sections of the polytope by affine lattice subspaces parallel to k-dimensional faces of the polytope. We discuss possible extensions and open questions.
A proof of hyperbolic van der Waerden conjecture : the right generalization is the ultimate simplification
Consider a homogeneous polynomial $p(z_1,...,z_n)$ of degree $n$ in $n$ complex variables . Assume that this polynomial satisfies the property : \\
$|p(z_1,...,z_n)| \geq \prod_{1 \leq i \leq n} Re(z_i)$ on the domain $\{(z_1,...,z_n) : Re(z_i) \geq 0, 1 \leq i \leq n \}$ . \\
We prove that $|\frac{\partial^n}{\partial z_1...\partial z_n} p | \geq \frac{n!}{n^n}$ . Our proof is relatively short and self-contained (i.e. we only use basic properties of hyperbolic polynomials). As the van der Waerden conjecture for permanents, proved by D.I. Falikman and G.P. Egorychev, as well Bapat's conjecture for mixed discriminants, proved by the author, are particular cases of this result. We also prove so called "small rank" lower bound (in the permanents context it corresponds to sparse doubly-stochastic matrices, i.e. with small number of non-zero entries in each column). The later lower bound generalizes (with simpler proofs) recent lower bounds by A.Schrijver for the number of perfect matchings of $k$-regular bipartite graphs.
We present some important algorithmic applications of the result, including a polynomial time deterministic algorithm approximating the permanent of $n \times n$ nonnegative entry-wise matrices within multiplicative factor $\frac{e^n}{n^m}$ for any fixed positive $m$ .

We give a formula for the q-characters of arbitrary highest-weight integrable modules of sl_{r+1} as a linear combination of the fermionic q-characters of special fusion products of integrable modules. The coefficients in the sum are entries of the inverse matrix of generalized Kostka polynomials, which are in Z[q^{-1}]. In this paper we prove the relation between the character of the Feigin-Loktev graded tensor product and the generalized Kostka polynomial. We also prove the fermionic formula for the q-characters of the (unrestricted) fusion products of rectangular highest-weight integrable g-modules.
The C-polynomial of a knot

In an earlier paper the first author defined a non-commutative A-polynomial for knots in 3-space, using the colored Jones function. The idea is that the colored Jones function of a knot satisfies a non-trivial linear q-difference equation. Said differently, the colored Jones function of a knot is annihilated by a non-zero ideal of the Weyl algebra which is generalted (after localization) by the non-commutative A-polynomial of a knot.
In that paper, it was conjectured that this polynomial (which has to do with representations of the quantum group U_q(SL_2)) specializes at q=1 to the better known A-polynomial of a knot, which has to do with genuine SL_2(C) representations of the knot complement.
Computing the non-commutative A-polynomial of a knot is a difficult task which so far has been achieved for the two simplest knots. In the present paper, we introduce the C-polynomial of a knot, along with its non-commutative version, and give an explicit computation for all twist knots. In a forthcoming paper, we will use this information to compute the non-commutative A-polynomial of twist knots. Finally, we formulate a number of conjectures relating the A, the C-polynomial and the Alexander polynomial, all confirmed for the class of twist knots.
Categorification of the Dichromatic Polynomial for Graphs
For each graph and each positive integer $n$, we define a chain complex whose graded Euler characteristic is equal to an appropriate $n$-specialization of the dichromatic polynomial. This also gives a categorification of $n$-specializations of the Tutte polynomial of graphs. Also, for each graph and integer $n\le 2$, we define the different one variable $n$-specializations of the dichromatic polynomials, and for each polynomial we define graded chain complex whose graded Euler characteristic is equal to that polynomial. Furthermore, we explicitly categorify the specialization of the Tutte polynomial for graphs which corresponds to the Jones polynomial of the appropriate alternating link.

A triangle $\{a(n,k)\}_{0\le k\le n}$ of nonnegative numbers is LC-positive if for each $r$, the sequence of polynomials $\sum_{k=r}^{n}a(n,k)q^k$ is $q$-log-concave. It is double LC-positive if both triangles $\{a(n,k)\}$ and $\{a(n,n-k)\}$ are LC-positive. We show that if $\{a(n,k)\}$ is LC-positive then the log-concavity of the sequence $\{x_k\}$ implies that of the sequence $\{z_n\}$ defined by $z_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}a(n,k)x_k$, and if $\{a(n,k)\}$ is double LC-positive then the log-concavity of sequences $\{x_k\}$ and $\{y_k\}$ implies that of the sequence $\{z_n\}$ defined by $z_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}a(n,k)x_ky_{n-k}$. Examples of double LC-positive triangles include the constant triangle and the Pascal triangle. We also give a generalization of a result of Liggett that is used to prove a conjecture of Pemantle on characteristics of negative dependence.

Let $K$ be an infinite field and $R=K[x_1,...,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring. Let $V=V_1, ..., V_m$ be a collection of vector spaces of linear forms. Denote by $A(V)$ the $K$-subalgebra of $R$ generated by the elements of the product $V_1... V_m$. Our goal is to investigate the properties of the algebra $A(V)$ and the relations with two problems in algebraic combinatorics White's and related conjectures on polymatroids and the study of integral posets.

We examine two different ways of encoding a counting function, as a rational generating function and explicitly as a function (defined piecewise using the greatest integer function). We prove that, if the degree and number of input variables of the (quasi-polynomial) function are fixed, there is a polynomial time algorithm which converts between the two representations. Examples of such counting functions include Ehrhart quasi-polynomials, vector partition functions, integer points in parametric polytopes, and projections of the integer points in parametric polytopes. For this last example, this algorithm provides the first known way to compute the explicit function in polynomial time. We rely heavily on results of Barvinok, and also of Verdoolaege, Seghir, Beyls, et al.

Let $F(t,u)\equiv F(u)$ be a formal power series in $t$ with polynomial coefficients in $u$. Let $F\_1, ..., F\_k$ be $k$ formal power series in $t$, independent of $u$. Assume all these series are characterized by a polynomial equation $$ P(F(u), F\_1, ..., F\_k, t, u)=0. $$ We prove that, under a mild hypothesis on the form of this equation, these $(k+1)$ series are algebraic, and we give a strategy to compute a polynomial equation for each of them. This strategy generalizes the so-called kernel method, and quadratic method, which apply respectively to equations that are linear and quadratic in $F(u)$. Applications include the solution of numerous map enumeration problems, among which the hard-particle model on general planar maps.

A multivariable hypergeometric-type formula for raising operators of the Macdonald polynomials is conjectured. It is proved that this agrees with Jing and Jozefiak's expression for the two-row Macdonald polynomials, and also with Lassalle and Schlosser's formula for partitions with length three.
