Two New Bounds on the Random-Edge Simplex Algorithm
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 21, 178-190 (2007) • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the Random-Edge simplex algorithm requires an expected number of at most 13n/sqrt(d) pivot steps on any simple d-polytope with n vertices. This is the first nontrivial upper bound for general polytopes. We also describe a refined analysis that potentially yields much better bounds for specific classes of polytopes. As one application, we show that for combinatorial d-cubes, the trivial upper bound of 2^d on the performance of Random-Edge can asymptotically be improved by any desired polynomial factor in d.
Boson Normal Ordering via Substitutions and Sheffer-type Polynomials
Published in Phys. Lett. A 338, 108 (2005) • View PublicationBIB
We solve the boson normal ordering problem for (q(a*)a + v(a*))^n with arbitrary functions q and v and integer n, where a and a* are boson annihilation and creation operators, satisfying [a,a*]=1. This leads to exponential operators generalizing the shift operator and we show that their action can be expressed in terms of substitutions. Our solution is naturally related through the coherent state representation to the exponential generating functions of Sheffer-type polynomials. This in turn opens a vast arena of combinatorial methodology which is applied to boson normal ordering and illustrated by a few examples.

A q-Analogue of Faulhaber's Formula for Sums of Powers

Let $$ S_{m,n}(q):=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1-q^{2k}}{1-q^2} (\frac{1-q^k}{1-q})^{m-1}q^{\frac{m+1}{2}(n-k)}. $$ Generalizing the formulas of Warnaar and Schlosser, we prove that there exist polynomials $P_{m,k}(q)\in\mathbb{Z}[q]$ such that $$ S_{2m+1,n}(q) =\sum_{k=0}^{m}(-1)^kP_{m,k}(q) \frac{(1-q^n)^{m+1-k}(1-q^{n+1})^{m+1-k}q^{kn}} {(1-q^2)(1-q)^{2m-3k}\prod_{i=0}^{k}(1-q^{m+1-i})}, $$ and solve a problem raised by Schlosser. We also show that there is a similar formula for the following $q$-analogue of alternating sums of powers: $$ T_{m,n}(q):=\sum_{k=1}^{n}(-1)^{n-k} (\frac{1-q^k}{1-q})^{m}q^{\frac{m}{2}(n-k)}. $$

On the Computation of Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients and the Dilation Effect
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the problem of computing tensor product multiplicities for complex semisimple Lie algebras. Even though computing these numbers is #P-hard in general, we show that if the rank of the Lie algebra is assumed fixed, then there is a polynomial time algorithm, based on counting the lattice points in polytopes. In fact, for Lie algebras of type A_r, there is an algorithm, based on the ellipsoid algorithm, to decide when the coefficients are nonzero in polynomial time for arbitrary rank. Our experiments show that the lattice point algorithm is superior in practice to the standard techniques for computing multiplicities when the weights have large entries but small rank. Using an implementation of this algorithm, we provide experimental evidence for conjectured generalizations of the saturation property of Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. One of these conjectures seems to be valid for types B_n, C_n, and D_n.

The generic Groebner walk
Published in J. Symb. Comp. 42 (2007), 298-312. • View PublicationBIB
The Groebner walk is an algorithm for conversion between Groebner bases for different term orders. It is based on the polyhedral geometry of the Groebner fan and involves tracking a line between cones representing the initial and target term order. An important parameter is explicit numerical perturbation of this line. This usually involves both time and space demanding arithmetic of integers much larger than the input numbers. In this paper we show how the explicit line may be replaced by a formal line using Robbiano's characterization of group orders on Q^n. This gives rise to the generic Groebner walk involving only Groebner basis conversion over facets and computations with marked polynomials. The proposed technique is closely related to the lexicographic (symbolic) perturbation method used in optimization and computational geometry. We report on computations with toric ideals, where a version of our algorithm in certain cases computes test sets for hard integer knapsack problems significantly faster than the Buchberger algorithm.

On the X=M=K Conjecture
In the large rank limit, for any nonexceptional affine algebra, the graded branching multiplicities known as one-dimensional sums, are conjectured to have a simple relationship with those of type A, which are known as generalized Kostka polynomials. This is called the X=M=K conjecture. It is proved for tensor products of the symmetric power Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules for all nonexceptional affine algebras except those whose Dynkin diagrams are isomorphic to that of untwisted affine type D near the zero node. Combined with results of Lecouvey, this realizes the above one-dimensional sums of affine type C, as affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials (and conjecturally for type D).

On the multigraded Hilbert and Poincaré-Betti series and the Golod property of monomial rings
We study the multigraded Poincaré-Betti series of $A=S/\aaf$, where $S$ is the ring of polynomials in $n$ indeterminates divided by the monomial ideal $\aaf$. There is a conjecture about the multigraded Poincaré-Betti series by Charalambous and Reeves which they proved in the case, where the Taylor resolution is minimal. We introduce a conjecture about the minimal $A$-free resolution of the residue class field and show that this conjecture implies the conjecture of Charalambous and Reeves. We prove our conjecture for several classes of algebras. The conjecture implies that $A$ is Golod if and only if the product (i.e. the first Massey operation) on the Koszul homology is trivial. Under the assumption of the conjecture we finally prove that a very simple purely combinatorial condition on the minimal monomial generating system of $\aaf$ implies Golodness for $A$.

Ordering Events in Minkowski Space
Published • View PublicationBIB
We are given k points (events) in (n+1)-dimensional Minkowski space. Using the theory of hyperplane arrangments and chromatic polynomials, we obtain information the number of different orders in which the events can occur in different reference frames if the events are sufficiently generic. We consider the question of what sets of orderings of the points are possible and show a connection with sphere orders and the allowable sequences of Goodman and Pollack.

Nonintersecting Paths, Noncolliding Diffusion Processes and Representation Theory
Published in RIMS Kokyuroku 1438 (2005) 83-102 • Search Publication
The system of one-dimensional symmetric simple random walks, in which none of walkers have met others in a given time period, is called the vicious walker model. It was introduced by Michael Fisher and applications of the model to various wetting and melting phenomena were described in his Boltzmann medal lecture. In the present report, we explain interesting connections among representation theory, probability theory, and random matrix theory using this simple diffusion particle system. Each vicious walk of $N$ walkers is represented by an $N$-tuple of nonintersecting lattice paths on the spatio-temporal plane. There is established a simple bijection between nonintersecting lattice paths and semistandard Young tableaux. Based on this bijection and some knowledge of symmetric polynomials called the Schur functions, we can give a determinantal expression to the partition function of vicious walks, which is regarded as a special case of the Karlin-McGregor formula in the probability theory (or the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot formula in the enumerative combinatorics). Due to a basic property of Schur function, we can take the diffusion scaling limit of the vicious walks and define a noncolliding system of Brownian particles. This diffusion process solves the stochastic differential equations with the drift terms acting as the repulsive two-body forces proportional to the inverse of distances between particles, and thus it is identified with Dyson's Brownian motion model. In other words, the obtained noncolliding system of Brownian particles is equivalent in distribution with the eigenvalue process of a Hermitian matrix-valued process.

Resolution of the residue class field via algebraic discrete Morse theory
Forman's Discrete Morse theory is studied from an algebraic viewpoint. Analogous to independent work of Emil Skoeldberg we show that this theory can be extended to chain complexes of free modules over a ring. We provide three applications of this theory: We construct new resolutions of the residue class field $k$ over $A$, where $A$ is the quotient of a (i) commutative polynomial ring or (ii) non-commutaitve polynomial ring by a (twosided) ideal and (iii) we construct a new resolution of $A$ as an $A \otimes A^{op}$-module in the situation (ii). In either case we prove minimality of the resolution for certain classes of algebras $A$.

(k,m)-Catalan Numbers and Hook Length Polynomials for Plane Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a formula of A. Postnikov relating binary trees, we define the hook length polynomials for m-ary trees and plane forests, and show that these polynomials have a simple binomial expression. An integer value of this expression is C_{k,m}(n)=\frac{1}{mn+1}{(mn+1)k \choose n}, which we call the (k,m)-Catalan number. For proving the hook length formulas, we also introduce a combinatorial family, (k,m)-ary trees, which are counted by the (k,m)-Catalan numbers.

Factorization of polynomials in one variable over the tropical semiring
We show factorization of polynomials in one variable over the tropical semiring is in general NP-complete, either if all coefficients are finite, or if all are either 0 or infinity (Boolean case). We give algorithms for the factorization problem which are not polynomial time in the degree, but are polynomial time for polynomials of fixed degree. For two-variable polynomials we derive an irreducibility criterion which is almost always satisfied, even for fixed degree, and is polynomial time in the degree. We prove there are unique least common multiples of tropical polynomials, but not unique greatest common divisors. We show that if two polynomials in one variable have a common tropical factor, then their eliminant matrix is singular in the tropical sense. We prove the problem of determining tropical rank is NP-hard.

Nilpotent orbits of linear and cyclic quivers and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of type A
Published in Represent. Theory 11 (2007), pp. 95-121 • View PublicationBIB
The intersection cohomologies of closures of nilpotent orbits of linear (respectively, cyclic) quivers are known to be described by Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the symmetric group (respectively, the affine symmetric group). We explain how to simplify this description using a combinatorial cancellation procedure, and derive some consequences for representation theory.

Branching rules, Kostka-Foulkes polynomials and $q$-multiplicities in tensor product for the root systems $B\_{n},C\_{n}$ and $D\_{n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kostka-Foulkes polynomials $K$ related to a root system $φ$ can be defined as alternated sums running over the Weyl group associated to $φ.$ By restricting these sums over the elements of the symmetric group when $% φ$ is of type $B,C$ or $D$, we obtain again a class $\widetilde{K}$ of Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. When $φ$ is of type $C$ or $D$ there exists a duality beetween these polynomials and some natural $q$-multiplicities $U$ in tensor product \cite{lec}. In this paper we first establish identities for the $\widetilde{K}$ which implies in particular that they can be decomposed as sums of Kostka-Foulkes polynomials related to the root system of type $A$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. Moreover these coefficients are branching rule coefficients. This allows us to clarify the connection beetween the $q$-multiplicities $U$ and the polynomials defined by Shimozono and Zabrocki in \cite{SZ}. Finally we establish that the $q$-multiplicities $U$ defined for the tensor powers of the vector representation coincide up to a power of $q$ with the one dimension sum $X$ introduced in \cite{Ok} This shows that in this case the one dimension sums $% X$ are affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Educational production and optimal class size
Lazear (2001) (Quarterly Journal of Economics, v. 116, p. 777-803) provided a model of a private school with a particular profit function. Using an alternative, related profit function I show that an optimal solution has nearly equal class sizes. I also offer a conjecture about the roots of a certain family of polynomials, which if true, allows one to conclude that if students become less disruptive or teacher cost increases, then the optimal solution for a profit maximizing school is generally, but not always, to use fewer classes. I also show that if the school has s>1 types of students, then the optimal solution will have at most s-1 mixed classes and its bipartite graph is a forest.

Chromatic Polynomial, Colered Jones Function and q-Binomial Counting

We define a q-chromatic function on graphs, list some of its properties and provide some formulas in the class of general chordal graphs. Then we relate the q-chromatic function to the colored Jones function of knots. This leads to a curious expression of the colored Jones function of a knot diagram as a 'defected chromatic operator' applied to a power series whose coefficients are linear combinations of chord diagrams constructed from 'flows' on the reduced knot diagram.

Symmetric functions in superspace
We construct a generalization of the theory of symmetric functions involving functions of commuting and anticommuting (Grassmannian) variables. These new functions, called symmetric functions in superspace, are invariant under the diagonal action of the symmetric group acting on the sets of commuting and anticommuting variables. We first obtain superspace analogues of a number of standard objects and concepts in the theory of symmetric functions: partitions, monomials, elementary symmetric functions, completely symmetric functions, power sums, involutions, generating functions, Cauchy formulas, and scalar products. We then consider a one-parameter extension of the combinatorial scalar product. It provides the natural setting for the definition of a family of ``combinatorial'' orthogonal Jack polynomials in superspace. We show that this family coincides with that of ``physical'' Jack polynomials in superspace that were previously introduced by the authors as orthogonal eigenfunctions of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical many-body problem. The equivalence of the two families is established by showing that the ``physical'' Jack polynomials are also orthogonal with respect to the combinatorial scalar product. This equivalence is also directly demonstrated for particular values of the free parameter.
