We initiate the study of a class of polytopes, which we coin polypositroids, defined to be those polytopes that are simultaneously generalized permutohedra (or polymatroids) and alcoved polytopes. Whereas positroids are the matroids arising from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, polypositroids are "positive" polymatroids. We parametrize polypositroids using Coxeter necklaces and balanced graphs, and describe the cone of polypositroids by extremal rays and facet inequalities. We introduce a notion of (W,c)-polypositroid for a finite Weyl group W and a choice of Coxeter element c. We connect the theory of (W,c)-polypositroids to cluster algebras of finite type and to generalized associahedra. We discuss membranes, which are certain triangulated 2-dimensional surfaces inside polypositroids. Membranes extend the notion of plabic graphs from positroids to polypositroids.
Positroid cluster structures from relabeled plabic graphs

The Grassmannian is a disjoint union of open positroid varieties $P_v$, certain smooth irreducible subvarieties whose definition is motivated by total positivity. The coordinate ring of $P_v$ is a cluster algebra, and each reduced plabic graph $G$ for $P_v$ determines a cluster. We study the effect of relabeling the boundary vertices of $G$ by a permutation $r$. Under suitable hypotheses on the permutation, we show that the relabeled graph $G^r$ determines a cluster for a different open positroid variety $P_w$. As a key step of the proof, we show that $P_v$ and $P_w$ are isomorphic by a nontrivial twist isomorphism. Our constructions yield many cluster structures on each open positroid variety $P_w$, given by plabic graphs with appropriately relabeled boundary. We conjecture that the seeds in all of these cluster structures are related by a combination of mutations and Laurent monomial transformations involving frozen variables, and establish this conjecture for (open) Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties. As an application, we also show that for certain reduced plabic graphs $G$, the "source" cluster and the "target" cluster are related by mutation and Laurent monomial rescalings.

We discover a new property of the stochastic colored six-vertex model called flip-invariance. We use it to show that for a given collection of observables of the model, any transformation that preserves the distribution of each individual observable also preserves their joint distribution. This generalizes recent shift-invariance results of Borodin-Gorin-Wheeler. As limiting cases, we obtain similar statements for the Brownian last passage percolation, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, the Airy sheet, and directed polymers. Our proof relies on an equivalence between the stochastic colored six-vertex model and the Yang-Baxter basis of the Hecke algebra. We conclude by discussing the relationship of the model with Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and positroid varieties in the Grassmannian.

We define and study the totally nonnegative part of the Chow quotient of the Grassmannian, or more simply the nonnegative configuration space. This space has a natural stratification by positive Chow cells, and we show that nonnegative configuration space is homeomorphic to a polytope as a stratified space. We establish bijections between positive Chow cells and the following sets: (a) regular subdivisions of the hypersimplex into positroid polytopes, (b) the set of cones in the positive tropical Grassmannian, and (c) the set of cones in the positive Dressian. Our work is motivated by connections to super Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes, which will be discussed in a sequel.
The positive tropical Grassmannian, the hypersimplex, and the m=2 amplituhedron
The study of the moment map from the Grassmannian to the hypersimplex, and the relation between torus orbits and matroid polytopes, dates back to the foundational 1987 work of Gelfand-Goresky-MacPherson-Serganova. On the other hand, the amplituhedron is a very new object, defined by Arkani-Hamed-Trnka in connection with scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In this paper we discover a striking duality between the moment map $μ:Gr^{\geq0}_{k+1,n}\toΔ_{k+1,n}$ from the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq0}_{k+1,n}$ to the hypersimplex, and the amplituhedron map $\tilde{Z}:Gr^{\geq0}_{k,n}\to\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ from $Gr^{\geq0}_{k,n}$ to the $m=2$ amplituhedron. We consider the positroid dissections of both objects, which informally, are subdivisions of $Δ_{k+1,n}$ (respectively, $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$) into a disjoint union of images of positroid cells of the positive Grassmannian. At first glance, $Δ_{k+1,n}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ seem very different - the former is an $(n-1)$-dimensional polytope, while the latter is a $2k$-dimensional non-polytopal subset of $Gr_{k,k+2}$. Nevertheless, we conjecture that positroid dissections of $Δ_{k+1,n}$ are in bijection with positroid dissections of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ via a map we call T-duality. We prove this conjecture for the (infinite) class of BCFW dissections and give additional experimental evidence. Moreover, we prove that the positive tropical Grassmannian is the secondary fan for the regular positroid subdivisions of the hypersimplex, and propose that it also controls the T-dual positroid subdivisions of the amplituhedron. Along the way, we prove that a matroid polytope is a positroid polytope if and only if all two-dimensional faces are positroid polytopes. Towards the goal of generalizing T-duality for higher $m$, we also define the momentum amplituhedron for any even $m$.
Kostant's partition function and magic multiplex juggling sequences

Kostant's partition function is a vector partition function that counts the number of ways one can express a weight of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ as a nonnegative integral linear combination of the positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. Multiplex juggling sequences are generalizations of juggling sequences that specify an initial and terminal configuration of balls and allow for multiple balls at any particular discrete height. Magic multiplex juggling sequences generalize further to include magic balls, which cancel with standard balls when they meet at the same height. In this paper, we establish a combinatorial equivalence between positive roots of a Lie algebra and throws during a juggling sequence. This provides a juggling framework to calculate Kostant's partition functions, and a partition function framework to compute the number of juggling sequences. From this equivalence we provide a broad range of consequences and applications connecting this work to polytopes, posets, positroids, and weight multiplicities.

We show that the dimer algebra of a connected Postnikov diagram in the disc is bimodule internally 3-Calabi-Yau in the sense of the author's earlier work. As a consequence, we obtain an additive categorification of the cluster algebra associated to the diagram, which (after inverting frozen variables) is isomorphic to the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety in the Grassmannian by a recent result of Galashin and Lam. We show that our categorification can be realised as a full extension closed subcategory of Jensen-King-Su's Grassmannian cluster category, in a way compatible with their bijection between rank 1 modules and Plücker coordinates.

The Catalan numbers form a sequence that counts over 200 combinatorial objects. A remarkable property of the Catalan numbers, which extends to these objects, is its recursive definition; that is, we can determine the $n^{th}$ object from previous ones. Matroids are combinatorial objects that generalize the notion of linear independence and have connections with other fields of mathematics. A family of matroids, called unit interval positroids (UIP), are Catalan objects induced by the antiadjacency matrices of unit interval orders. Associated to each UIP is the set of externally ordered bases, which due to Las Vergnas, produces a lattice after adjoining a bottom element. We study the poset of externally ordered UIP bases and the implied Catalan-induced recursion. Explicitly, we describe an algorithm for constructing the lattice of a rank $n$ UIP from the lattice of lower ranks. Using their inherent combinatorial structure, we define a simple formula to enumerate the bases for a given UIP.

Flag matroids are a rich family of Coxeter matroids that can be characterized using pairs of matroids that form a quotient. We consider a class of matroids called positroids, introduced by Postnikov, and utilize their combinatorial representations to explore characterizations of flag positroids.
Given a uniform positroid, we give a purely combinatorial characterization of a family of positroids that form quotients with it. We state this in terms of their associated decorated permutations. In proving our characterization we also fully describe the circuits of this family.

Wilson loop diagrams are an important tool in studying scattering amplitudes of SYM $N=4$ theory and are known by previous work to be associated to positroids. In this paper we study the structure of the associated positroids, as well as the structure of the denominator of the integrand defined by each diagram. We give an algorithm to derive the Grassmann necklace of the associated positroid directly from the Wilson loop diagram, and a recursive proof that the dimension of these cells is thrice the number of propagators in the diagram. We also show that the ideal generated by the denominator in the integrand is the radical of the ideal generated by the product of Grassmann necklace minors.

We study arrangements of slightly skewed tropical hyperplanes, called blades by A. Ocneanu, on the vertices of a hypersimplex $Δ_{k,n}$, and we investigate the resulting induced polytopal subdivisions. We show that placing a blade on a vertex $e_J$ induces an $\ell$-split matroid subdivision of $Δ_{k,n}$, where $\ell$ is the number of cyclic intervals in the $k$-element subset $J$. We prove that a given collection of $k$-element subsets is weakly separated, in the sense of the work of Leclerc and Zelevinsky on quasicommuting families of quantum minors, if and only if the arrangement of the blade $((1,2,\ldots, n))$ on the corresponding vertices of $Δ_{k,n}$ induces a matroid (in fact, a positroid) subdivision. In this way we obtain a compatibility criterion for (planar) multi-splits of a hypersimplex, generalizing the rule known for 2-splits. We study in an extended example the case $(k,n) = (3,7)$ the set of arrangements of $(k-1)(n-k-1)$ weakly separated vertices of $Δ_{k,n}$.

Wilson loop diagrams are an important tool in studying scattering amplitudes of SYM $N=4$ theory and are known by previous work to be associated to positroids. We characterize the conditions under which two Wilson loop diagrams give the same positroid, prove that an important subclass of subdiagrams (exact subdiagrams) correspond to uniform matroids, and enumerate the number of different Wilson loop diagrams that correspond to each positroid cell. We also give a correspondence between those positroids which can arise from Wilson loop diagrams and directions in associahedra.

Amalgamation in the totally non-negative part of positroid varieties is equivalent to gluing copies of $Gr^{TP}(1,3)$ and $Gr^{TP}(2,3)$. Lam has proposed to represent amalgamation in positroid varieties by equivalence classes of relations on bipartite graphs and identify total non-negativity via edge signatures. Here we provide an explicit characterization of such signatures on the planar bicolored trivalent directed perfect networks in the disk parametrizing positroid cells $S_M^{TNN}$.To a graph $G$ representing $S_M^{TNN}$, we associate a geometric signature satisfying full rank condition and total non--negativity. Such signature is uniquely identified by geometric indices ruled by orientation and gauge ray direction. The image of this map coincides with that of Postnikov boundary measurement map. We solve the system of geometric relations generalizing Postnikov's and Talaska's results for the boundary edges to the internal edges of the graphs: the edge vector components are rational in the weights with subtraction--free denominators, and have explicit expressions in terms of conservative and edge flows. At boundary sources the edge vectors give the boundary measurement matrix. If $G$ is acyclically orientable, all components are subtraction-free rational in the weights w.r.t. a convenient basis. We provide explicit formulas for the transformation rules w.r.t. changes the orientation, the several gauges of the given network, moves and reductions of networks. We show that the image of the boundary measurement map and the dimer partition functions do not coincide if the graph is not bipartite.
Positively Hyperbolic Varieties, Tropicalization, and Positroids
A variety of codimension $c$ in complex affine space is called positively hyperbolic if the imaginary part of any point in it does not lie in any positive linear subspace of dimension $c$. Positively hyperbolic hypersurfaces are defined by stable polynomials. We give a new characterization of positively hyperbolic varieties using sign variations, and show that they are equivalently defined by being hyperbolic with respect to the positive part of the Grassmannian, in the sense of Shamovich and Vinnikov. We prove that positively hyperbolic projective varieties have tropicalizations that are locally subfans of the type $A$ hyperplane arrangement defined by $x_i = x_j$, in which the maximal cones satisfy a non-crossing condition. This gives new proofs of some results of Choe--Oxley--Sokal--Wagner and Brändén on Newton polytopes and tropicalizations of stable polynomials. We settle the question of which tropical varieties can be obtained as tropicalizations of positively hyperbolic varieties in the case of tropical toric varieties, constant-coefficient tropical curves, and Bergman fans. Along the way, we also give a new characterization of positroids in terms of a non-crossing condition on their Bergman fans.
Total positivity is a quantum phenomenon: the grassmannian case

The main aim of this paper is to establish a deep link between the totally nonnegative grassmannian and the quantum grassmannian. More precisely, under the assumption that the deformation parameter $q$ is transcendental, we show that "quantum positroids" are completely prime ideals in the quantum grassmannian $A$. As a consequence, we obtain that torus-invariant prime ideals in the quantum grassmannian are generated by polynormal sequences of quantum Plücker coordinates and give a combinatorial description of these generating sets. We also give a topological description of the poset of torus-invariant prime ideals in $A$, and prove a version of the orbit method for torus-invariant objects. Finally, we construct separating Ore sets for all torus-invariant primes in $A$. The latter is the first step in the Brown-Goodearl strategy to establish the orbit method for (quantum) grassmannians.

We show that the coordinate ring of an open positroid variety coincides with the cluster algebra associated to a Postnikov diagram. This confirms conjectures of Postnikov, Muller--Speyer, and Leclerc, and generalizes results of Scott and Serhiyenko--Sherman-Bennett--Williams.
Vandermondes in superspace
Superspace of rank $n$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra with $n$ commuting generators $x_1, \dots, x_n$ and $n$ anticommuting generators $θ_1, \dots, θ_n$. We present an extension of the Vandermonde determinant to superspace which depends on a sequence $\mathbf{a} = (a_1, \dots, a_r)$ of nonnegative integers of length $r \leq n$. We use superspace Vandermondes to construct graded representations of the symmetric group. This construction recovers hook-shaped Tanisaki quotients, the coinvariant ring for the Delta Conjecture constructed by Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono, and a superspace quotient related to positroids and Chern plethysm constructed by Billey, Rhoades, and Tewari. We define a notion of partial differentiation with respect to anticommuting variables to construct doubly graded modules from superspace Vandermondes. These doubly graded modules carry a natural ring structure which satisfies a 2-dimensional version of Poincaré duality. The application of polarization operators gives rise to other bigraded modules which give a conjectural module for the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$ appearing in the Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson.
Basis shape loci and the positive Grassmannian
A basis shape locus takes as input data a zero/nonzero pattern in an $n \times k$ matrix, which is equivalent to a presentation of a transversal matroid. The locus is defined as the set of points in the Grassmannian of $k$ planes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which are the row space of a matrix with the prescribed zero/nonzero pattern. We show that this locus depends only on the transversal matroid, not on the specific presentation. When a transversal matroid is a positroid, the closure of its basis shape locus is the associated positroid variety. We give a sufficient, and conjecturally necessary, condition for when a transversal matroid is a positroid. Finally, we discus applications to two programs for computing scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory: one trying to prove that projections of certain positroid cells triangulate the amplituhedron, and another using Wilson loop diagrams.

We show that the totally nonnegative part of a partial flag variety $G/P$ (in the sense of Lusztig) is a regular CW complex, confirming a conjecture of Williams. In particular, the closure of each positroid cell inside the totally nonnegative Grassmannian is homeomorphic to a ball, confirming a conjecture of Postnikov.
Boolean product polynomials, Schur positivity, and Chern plethysm

Let $1\leq k \leq n$ and let $X_n = (x_1, \dots, x_n)$ be a list of $n$ variables. The {\em Boolean product polynomial} $B_{n,k}(X_n)$ is the product of the linear forms $\sum_{i \in S} x_i$ where $S$ ranges over all $k$-element subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$. We prove that Boolean product polynomials are Schur positive. We do this via a new method of proving Schur positivity using vector bundles and a symmetric function operation we call {\em Chern plethysm}. This gives a geometric method for producing a vast array of Schur positive polynomials whose Schur positivity lacks (at present) a combinatorial or representation theoretic proof. We relate the polynomials $B_{n,k}(X_n)$ for certain $k$ to other combinatorial objects including derangements, positroids, alternating sign matrices, and reverse flagged fillings of a partition shape. We also relate $B_{n,n-1}(X_n)$ to a bigraded action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on a divergence free quotient of superspace.
