Flip cycles in plabic graphs
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 26, 15 (2020) • Search Publication
Planar bicolored (plabic) graphs are combinatorial objects introduced by Postnikov to give parameterizations of the positroid cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\text{Gr}^{\geq 0}(n,k)$. Any two plabic graphs for the same positroid cell can be related by a sequence of certain moves. The flip graph has plabic graphs as vertices and has edges connecting the plabic graphs which are related by a single move. A recent result of Galashin shows that plabic graphs can be seen as cross-sections of zonotopal tilings for the cyclic zonotope $Z(n,3)$. Taking this perspective, we show that the fundamental group of the flip graph is generated by cycles of length 4, 5, and 10, and use this result to prove a related conjecture of Dylan Thurston about triple crossing diagrams. We also apply our result to make progress on an instance of the generalized Baues problem.

Cyclic Demazure modules and positroid varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
A positroid variety is an intersection of cyclically rotated Grassmannian Schubert varieties. Each graded piece of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety is the intersection of cyclically rotated (rectangular) Demazure modules, which we call the cyclic Demazure module. In this note, we show that the cyclic Demazure module has a canonical basis, and define the cyclic Demazure crystal.

Combinatorics of the Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian is a refinement of the Schubert, Richardson, and positroid stratifications of the Grassmannian. Go-diagrams are certain fillings of Ferrers diagrams with black stones, white stones, and pluses which index Deodhar components in the Grassmannian. We provide a series of corrective flips on diagrams which may be used to transform arbitrary fillings of Ferrers shapes with black stones, white stones, and pluses into a Go-diagram. This provides an extension of Lam and Williams' Le-moves for transforming reduced diagrams into Le-diagrams to the context of non-reduced diagrams. Next, we address the question of describing when the closure of one Deodhar component is contained in the closure of another. We show that if one Go-diagram $D$ is obtained from another $D'$ by replacing certain stones with pluses, then applying corrective flips, that there is a containment of closures of the associated Deodhar components, $\overline{\mathcal{D}'} \subset \overline{\mathcal{D}}$. Finally, we address the question of verifying whether an arbitrary filling of a Ferrers shape with black stones, white stones, and pluses is a Go-diagram. We show that no reasonable description of the class of Go-diagrams in terms of forbidden subdiagrams can exist by providing an injection from the set of valid Go-diagrams to the set of minimal forbidden subdiagrams for the class of Go-diagrams. In lieu of such a description, we offer an inductive characterization of the class of Go-diagrams.

Positive Grassmannian and polyhedral subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The nonnegative Grassmannian is a cell complex with rich geometric, algebraic, and combinatorial structures. Its study involves interesting combinatorial objects, such as positroids and plabic graphs. Remarkably, the same combinatorial structures appeared in many other areas of mathematics and physics, e.g., in the study of cluster algebras, scattering amplitudes, and solitons. We discuss new ways to think about these structures. In particular, we identify plabic graphs and more general Grassmannian graphs with polyhedral subdivisions induced by 2-dimensional projections of hypersimplices. This implies a close relationship between the positive Grassmannian and the theory of fiber polytopes and the generalized Baues problem. This suggests natural extensions of objects related to the positive Grassmannian.

Parity duality for the amplituhedron
Published in Compositio Math. 156 (2020) 2207-2262 • View PublicationBIB
The (tree) amplituhedron $\mathcal A_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is a certain subset of the Grassmannian introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to study scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Confirming a conjecture of the first author, we show that when $m$ is even, a collection of affine permutations yields a triangulation of $\mathcal A_{n,k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in \operatorname{Gr}_{>0}(k+m,n)$ if and only if the collection of their inverses yields a triangulation of $\mathcal A_{n,n-m-k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in\operatorname{Gr}_{>0}(n-k,n)$. We prove this duality using the twist map of Marsh and Scott. We also show that this map preserves the canonical differential forms associated with the corresponding positroid cells, and hence obtain a parity duality for amplituhedron differential forms.

An algorithm to construct the Le diagram associated to a Grassmann necklace
Published • View PublicationBIB
Le diagrams and Grassmann necklaces both index the collection of positroids in the nonnegative Grassmannian $Gr_{\geq 0}(k,n)$, but they excel at very different tasks: for example, the dimension of a positroid is easily extracted from its Le diagram, while the list of bases of a positroid is far more easily obtained from its Grassmann necklace. Explicit bijections between the two are therefore desirable. An algorithm for turning a Le diagram into a Grassmann necklace already exists; in this note we give the reverse algorithm.

A study in $\mathbb{G}_{\mathbb{R}, \geq 0}$: from the geometric case book of Wilson loop diagrams and SYM $N=4$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometry underlying the Wilson loop diagram approach to calculating scattering amplitudes in the gauge theory of Supersymmetric Yang Mills (SYM) $N=4$. By applying the tools developed to study total positivity in the real Grassmannian, we are able to systematically compute with all Wilson loop diagrams of a given size and find unexpected patterns and relationships between them. We focus on the smallest nontrivial multi-propagator case, consisting of 2 propagators on 6 vertices, and compute the positroid cells associated to each diagram and the homology of the subcomplex they generate in $\mathbb{G}_{\mathbb{R}, \geq 0}$. We also verify in this case the conjecture that the spurious singularities of the volume functional {\em do} all cancel on the codimension 1 boundaries of these cells.
The Geometry of Gaussoids
Published in Foundations of Computational Mathematics 19 (2019), pp. 775-812 • View PublicationBIB
A gaussoid is a combinatorial structure that encodes independence in probability and statistics, just like matroids encode independence in linear algebra. The gaussoid axioms of Lnenicka and Matús are equivalent to compatibility with certain quadratic relations among principal and almost-principal minors of a symmetric matrix. We develop the geometric theory of gaussoids, based on the Lagrangian Grassmannian and its symmetries. We introduce oriented gaussoids and valuated gaussoids, thus connecting to real and tropical geometry. We classify small realizable and non-realizable gaussoids. Positive gaussoids are as nice as positroids: they are all realizable via graphical models.

The rank function of a positroid and non-crossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A positroid is a special case of a realizable matroid, that arose from the study of totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian by Postnikov. Postnikov demonstrated that positroids are in bijection with certain interesting classes of combinatorial objects, such as Grassmann necklaces and decorated permutations. The bases of a positroid can be described directly in terms of the Grassmann necklace and decorated permutation. In this paper, we show that the rank of an arbitrary set in a positroid can be computed directly from the associated decorated permutation using non-crossing partitions.

Purity and separation for oriented matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Leclerc and Zelevinsky, motivated by the study of quasi-commuting quantum flag minors, introduced the notions of strongly separated and weakly separated collections. These notions are closely related to the theory of cluster algebras, to the combinatorics of the double Bruhat cells, and to the totally positive Grassmannian. A key feature, called the purity phenomenon, is that every maximal by inclusion strongly (resp., weakly) separated collection of subsets in $[n]$ has the same cardinality. In this paper, we extend these notions and define $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections for any oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}$. We show that maximal by size $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections are in bijection with fine zonotopal tilings (if $\mathcal{M}$ is a realizable oriented matroid), or with one-element liftings of $\mathcal{M}$ in general position (for an arbitrary oriented matroid). We introduce the class of pure oriented matroids for which the purity phenomenon holds: an oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}$ is pure if $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections form a pure simplicial complex, i.e., any maximal by inclusion $\mathcal{M}$-separated collection is also maximal by size. We pay closer attention to several special classes of oriented matroids: oriented matroids of rank $3$, graphical oriented matroids, and uniform oriented matroids. We classify pure oriented matroids in these cases. An oriented matroid of rank $3$ is pure if and only if it is a positroid (up to reorienting and relabeling its ground set). A graphical oriented matroid is pure if and only if its underlying graph is an outerplanar graph, that is, a subgraph of a triangulation of an $n$-gon. We give a simple conjectural characterization of pure oriented matroids by forbidden minors and prove it for the above classes of matroids (rank $3$, graphical, uniform).

Positroids Induced by Rational Dyck Paths
A rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$ is an increasing unit-step lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,d) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ that never goes above the diagonal line $y = (d/m)x$. On the other hand, a positroid of rank $d$ on the ground set $[d+m]$ is a special type of matroid coming from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. In this paper we describe how to naturally assign a rank $d$ positroid on the ground set $[d+m]$, which we name rational Dyck positroid, to each rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$. We show that such an assignment is one-to-one. There are several families of combinatorial objects in one-to-one correspondence with the set of positroids. Here we characterize some of these families for the positroids we produce, namely Grassmann necklaces, decorated permutations, Le-diagrams, and move-equivalence classes of plabic graphs. Finally, we describe the matroid polytope of a given rational Dyck positroid.

From dimers to webs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We formulate a higher-rank version of the boundary measurement map for weighted planar bipartite networks in the disk. It sends a network to a linear combination of SL$_r$-webs, and is built upon the r-fold dimer model on the network. When r equals 1, our map is a reformulation of Postnikov's boundary measurement used to coordinatize positroid strata. When r equals 2 or 3, it is a reformulation of the SL$_2$- and SL$_3$-web immanants defined by the second author. The basic result is that the higher rank map factors through Postnikov's map. As an application, we deduce generators and relations for the space of SL$_r$-webs, reproving a result of Cautis-Kamnitzer-Morrison. We establish compatibility between our map and restriction to positroid strata, and thus between webs and total positivity.

Braid group symmetries of Grassmannian cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define an action of the extended affine d-strand braid group on the open positroid stratum in the Grassmannian Gr(k,n), for d the greatest common divisor of k and n. The action is by quasi-automorphisms of the cluster structure on the Grassmannian, determining a homomorphism from the extended affine braid group to the cluster modular group. We also define a quasi-isomorphism between the Grassmannian Gr(k,rk) and the Fock-Goncharov configuration space of 2r-tuples of affine flags for SL(k). This identifies the cluster variables, clusters, and cluster modular groups, in these two cluster structures. Fomin and Pylyavskyy proposed a description of the cluster combinatorics for Gr(3,n) in terms of Kuperberg's basis of non-elliptic webs. As our main application, we prove many of their conjectures for Gr(3,9) and give a presentation for its cluster modular group. We establish similar results for Gr(4,8). These results rely on the fact that both of these Grassmannians have finite mutation type.

The facets of the matroid polytope and the independent set polytope of a positroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
A positroid is a special case of a realizable matroid that arose from the study of the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian by Postnikov. In this paper, we study the facets of its matroid polytope and the independent set polytope. This allows one to describe the bases and independent sets directly from the decorated permutation, bypassing the use of the Grassmann necklace. We also describe a criterion for determining whether a given cyclic interval is a flat or not using the decorated permutation, then show how it applies to checking the concordancy of positroids.

A representation-theoretic interpretation of positroid classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A positroid is the matroid of a real matrix with nonnegative maximal minors, a positroid variety is the closure of the locus of points in a complex Grassmannian whose matroid is a fixed positroid, and a positroid class is the cohomology class Poincaré dual to a positroid variety. We define a family of representations of general linear groups whose characters are symmetric polynomials representing positroid classes. These representations are certain diagram Schur modules in the sense of James and Peel. This gives a new algebraic interpretation of the Schubert structure constants for the product of a Schubert polynomial and Schur polynomial, and of the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants for Grassmannians, proving a conjecture of Postnikov. As a byproduct, we obtain an effective algorithm for decomposing positroid classes into Schubert classes.

Dyck Paths and Positroids from Unit Interval Orders
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 154 (2018) 507-532 • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that the number of non-isomorphic unit interval orders on $[n]$ equals the $n$-th Catalan number. Using work of Skandera and Reed and work of Postnikov, we show that each unit interval order on $[n]$ naturally induces a rank $n$ positroid on $[2n]$. We call the positroids produced in this fashion unit interval positroids. We characterize the unit interval positroids by describing their associated decorated permutations, showing that each one must be a $2n$-cycle encoding a Dyck path of length $2n$. We also provide recipes to read the decorated permutation of a unit interval positroid $P$ from both the antiadjacency matrix and the interval representation of the unit interval order inducing $P$. Using our characterization of the decorated permutation, we describe the Le-diagrams corresponding to unit interval positroids. In addition, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for two Grassmann cells parameterized by unit interval positroids to be adjacent inside the Grassmann cell complex. Finally, we propose a potential approach to find the $f$-vector of a unit interval order.

Positroids have the Rayleigh property
The Rayleigh property is a negative correlation property of electrical networks, which was generalized to matroids by Choe and Wagner. We prove that positroids, a class of matroid introduced by Postnikov which have seen many recent applications in both math and physics, have the Rayleigh property.

Green-to-Red Sequences for Positroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Le-diagrams are combinatorial objects that parametrize cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, called positroid cells, and each Le-diagram gives rise to a cluster algebra which is believed to be isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the corresponding positroid variety. We study quivers arising from these diagrams and show that they can be constructed from the well-behaved quivers associated to Grassmannians by deleting and merging certain vertices. Then, we prove that quivers coming from arbitrary Le-diagrams, and more generally reduced plabic graphs, admit a particular sequence of mutations called a green-to-red sequence.

The twist for positroid varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to connect two maps related to certain graphs embedded in the disc. The first is Postnikov's boundary measurement map, which combines partition functions of matchings in the graph into a map from an algebraic torus to an open positroid variety in a Grassmannian. The second is a rational map from the open positroid variety to an algebraic torus, given by certain Plücker coordinates which are expected to be a cluster in a cluster structure. This paper clarifies the relationship between these two maps, which has been ambiguous since they were introduced by Postnikov in 2001. The missing ingredient supplied by this paper is a twist automorphism of the open positroid variety, which takes the target of the boundary measurement map to the domain of the (conjectural) cluster. Among other applications, this provides an inverse to the boundary measurement map, as well as Laurent formulas for twists of Plücker coordinates.

On the combinatorics of exact Lagrangian surfaces
We study Weinstein 4-manifolds which admit Lagrangian skeleta given by attaching disks to a surface along a collection of simple closed curves. In terms of the curves describing one such skeleton, we describe surgeries that preserve the ambient Weinstein manifold, but change the skeleton. The surgeries can be iterated to produce more such skeleta --- in many cases, infinitely many more. Each skeleton is built around a Lagrangian surface. Passing to the Fukaya category, the skeletal surgeries induce cluster transformations on the spaces of rank one local systems on these surfaces, and noncommutative analogues of cluster transformations on the spaces of higher rank local systems. In particular, the problem of producing and distinguishing such Lagrangians maps to a combination of combinatorial-geometric questions about curve configurations on surfaces and algebraic questions about exchange graphs of cluster algebras. Conversely, this expands the dictionary relating the cluster theory of character varieties, positroid strata, and related spaces to the symplectic geometry of Lagrangian fillings of Legendrian knots, by incorporating cluster charts more general than those associated to bicolored surface graphs.
