Solving the Tower of Hanoi with Random Moves
Published in In: The Mathematics of Various Entertaining Subjects: Research in Recreational Math, Princeton University Press, 2016, pp. 65-79. ISBN 978-0-691-16403-8 • View PublicationBIB
We prove the exact formulae for the expected number of moves to solve several variants of the Tower of Hanoi puzzle with 3 pegs and n disks, when each move is chosen uniformly randomly from the set of all valid moves. We further present an alternative proof for one of the formulae that couples a theorem about expected commute times of random walks on graphs with the delta-to-wye transformation used in the analysis of three-phase AC systems for electrical power distribution.

Probabilistic existence of regular combinatorial structures
Published in Geom. Funct. Anal. 27 (2017), 919-972 • View PublicationBIB
We show the existence of regular combinatorial objects which previously were not known to exist. Specifically, for a wide range of the underlying parameters, we show the existence of non-trivial orthogonal arrays, t-designs, and t-wise permutations. In all cases, the sizes of the objects are optimal up to polynomial overhead. The proof of existence is probabilistic. We show that a randomly chosen structure has the required properties with positive yet tiny probability. Our method allows also to give rather precise estimates on the number of objects of a given size and this is applied to count the number of orthogonal arrays, t-designs and regular hypergraphs. The main technical ingredient is a special local central limit theorem for suitable lattice random walks with finitely many steps.
Eigenfunctions of the Edge-Based Laplacian on a Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we analyze the eigenfunctions of the edge-based Laplacian on a graph and the relationship of these functions to random walks on the graph. We commence by discussing the set of eigenfunctions supported at the vertices, and demonstrate the relationship of these eigenfunctions to the classical random walk on the graph. Then, from an analysis of functions supported only on the interior of edges, we develop a method for explicitly calculating the edge-interior eigenfunctions of the edge-based Laplacian. This reveals a connection between the edge-based Laplacian and the adjacency matrix of backtrackless random walk on the graph. The edge-based eigenfunctions therefore correspond to some eigenfunctions of the normalised Hashimoto matrix.

Hitting Times, Cover Cost, and the Wiener Index of a Tree
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a close connection between hitting times of the simple random walk on a graph, the Wiener index, and related graph invariants. In the case of trees we obtain a simple identity relating hitting times to the Wiener index. It is well known that the vertices of any graph can be put in a linear preorder so that vertices appearing earlier in the preorder are "easier to reach" by a random walk, but "more difficult to get out of". We define various other natural preorders and study their relationships. These preorders coincide when the graph is a tree, but not necessarily otherwise. Our treatise is self-contained, and puts some known results relating the behaviour or random walk on a graph to its eigenvalues in a new perspective.

Simple random walk on distance-regular graphs
A survey is presented of known results concerning simple random walk on the class of distance-regular graphs. One of the highlights is that electric resistance and hitting times between points can be explicitly calculated and given strong bounds for, which leads in turn to bounds on cover times, mixing times, etc. Also discussed are harmonic functions, moments of hitting and cover times, the Green's function, and the cutoff phenomenon. The main goal of the paper is to present these graphs as a natural setting in which to study simple random walk, and to stimulate further research in the field.

Random walks in the quarter plane, discrete harmonic functions and conformal mappings
Published in Stochastic Processes and their Applications 124 (2014) 3147-3178 • View PublicationBIB
We propose a new approach for finding discrete harmonic functions in the quarter plane with Dirichlet conditions. It is based on solving functional equations that are satisfied by the generating functions of the values taken by the harmonic functions. As a first application of our results, we obtain a simple expression for the harmonic function that governs the asymptotic tail distribution of the first exit time for random walks from the quarter plane. As another corollary, we prove, in the zero drift case, the uniqueness of the discrete harmonic function.
Escape rates for rotor walk in Z^d
Published • View PublicationBIB
Rotor walk is a deterministic analogue of random walk. We study its recurrence and transience properties on Z^d for the initial configuration of all rotors aligned. If n particles in turn perform rotor walks starting from the origin, we show that the number that escape (i.e., never return to the origin) is of order n in dimensions d>=3, and of order n/log(n) in dimension 2.

Standard 2D Crystalline Patterns and Rational Points in Complex Quadrics
A certain Diophantine problem and 2D crystallography are linked through the notion of standard realizations which was introduced originally in the study of random walks. In the discussion, a complex projective quadric defined over Q is associated with a finite graph. "Rational points" on this quadric turns out to be related to standard realizations of 2D crystal structures.

Simplicial complexes: spectrum, homology and random walks
Published in Random Structures & Algorithms, 50(2): 225-261 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
Random walks on a graph reflect many of its topological and spectral properties, such as connectedness, bipartiteness and spectral gap magnitude. In the first part of this paper we define a stochastic process on simplicial complexes of arbitrary dimension, which reflects in an analogue way the existence of higher dimensional homology, and the magnitude of the high-dimensional spectral gap originating in the works of Eckmann and Garland. The second part of the paper is devoted to infinite complexes. We present a generalization of Kesten's result on the spectrum of regular trees, and of the connection between return probabilities and spectral radius. We study the analogue of the Alon-Boppana theorem on spectral gaps, and exhibit a counterexample for its high-dimensional counterpart. We show, however, that under some assumptions the theorem does hold - for example, if the codimension-one skeletons of the complexes in question form a family of expanders. Our study suggests natural generalizations of many concepts from graph theory, such as amenability, recurrence/transience, and bipartiteness. We present some observations regarding these ideas, and several open questions.

Random walks on quasirandom graphs
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 20(4) (2013), #P25 • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a quasirandom graph on n vertices, and let W be a random walk on G of length alpha n^2. Must the set of edges traversed by W form a quasirandom graph? This question was asked by Böttcher, Hladký, Piguet and Taraz. Our aim in this paper is to give a positive answer to this question. We also prove a similar result for random embeddings of trees.

Limit theorems for radial random walks on Euclidean spaces of high dimensions
Published in J. Aust. Math. Soc. 97 (2014) 212-236 • View PublicationBIB
Let $ν\in M^1([0,\infty[)$ be a fixed probability measure. For each dimension $p\in \mathbb{N}$, let $(X_n^{p})_{n\geq1}$ be i.i.d. $\mathbb{R}^p$-valued random variables with radially symmetric distributions and radial distribution $ν$. We investigate the distribution of the Euclidean length of $S_n^{p}:=X_1^{p}+...+ X_n^{p}$ for large parameters $n$ and $p$. Depending on the growth of the dimension $p=p_n$ we derive by the method of moments two complementary CLT's for the functional $|S_n^{p}|_2$ with normal limits, namely for $n/p_n \to \infty$ and $n/p_n \to 0$. Moreover, we present a CLT for the case $n/p_n \to c\in]0,\infty[$. Thereby we derive explicit formulas and asymptotic results for moments of radial distributed random variables on $\b R^p$. All limit theorems are considered also for orthogonal invariant random walks on the space $\b M_{p,q}(\b R)$ of $p\times q$ matrices instead of $\b R^p$ for $p\to \infty$ and some fixed dimension $q$.

Depth properties of scaled attachment random recursive trees
Published in Random Structures and Algorithms (2012), Vol. 41, 66-98 • View PublicationBIB
We study depth properties of a general class of random recursive trees where each node i attaches to the random node iX_i and X_0, ..., X_n is a sequence of i.i.d. random variables taking values in [0,1). We call such trees scaled attachment random recursive trees (SARRT). We prove that the typical depth D_n, the maximum depth (or height) H_n and the minimum depth M_n of a SARRT are asymptotically given by D_n \sim μ^{-1} \log n, H_n \sim α_{\max} \log n and M_n \sim α_{\min} \log n where μ, α_{\max} and α_{\min} are constants depending only on the distribution of X_0 whenever X_0 has a density. In particular, this gives a new elementary proof for the height of uniform random recursive trees H_n \sim e \log n that does not use branching random walks.

The Number of Spanning Trees in Apollonian Networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we find an exact analytical expression for the number of spanning trees in Apollonian networks. This parameter can be related to significant topological and dynamic properties of the networks, including percolation, epidemic spreading, synchronization, and random walks. As Apollonian networks constitute an interesting family of maximal planar graphs which are simultaneously small-world, scale-free, Euclidean and space filling and highly clustered, the study of their spanning trees is of particular relevance. Our results allow also the calculation of the spanning tree entropy of Apollonian networks, which then we compare with those of other graphs with the same average degree.

Random walks in compact groups

Let X_1,X_2,... be independent identically distributed random elements of a compact group G. We discuss the speed of convergence of the law of the product X_l*...*X_1 to the Haar measure. We give poly-log estimates for certain finite groups and for compact semi-simple Lie groups. We improve earlier results of Solovay, Kitaev, Gamburd, Shahshahani and Dinai.

Higher connectivity of fiber graphs of Gröbner bases
Published in J. Alg. Stat., 4(1):93-107, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Fiber graphs of Gröbner bases from contingency tables are important in statistical hypothesis testing, where one studies random walks on these graphs using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. The connectivity of the graphs has implications on how fast the algorithm converges. In this paper, we study a class of fiber graphs with elementary combinatorial techniques and provide results that support a recent conjecture of Engström: the connectivity is given by the minimum vertex degree.

Finding hitting times in various graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The hitting time, h_uv, of a random walk on a finite graph G, is the expected time for the walk to reach vertex v given that it started at vertex u. We present two methods of calculating the hitting time between vertices of finite graphs, along with applications to specific classes of graphs, including grids, trees, and the 'tadpole' graphs.

An inequality for functions on the Hamming cube
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove an inequality for functions on the discrete cube extending the edge-isoperimetric inequality for sets. This inequality turns out to be equivalent to the following claim about random walks on the cube: Subcubes maximize 'mean first exit time' among all subsets of the cube of the same cardinality.

Large Deviations for the Empirical Distribution in the Branching Random Walk
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the branching random walk on the real line where the underlying motion is of a simple random walk and branching is at least binary and at most decaying exponentially in law. It is well known that the normalized empirical measure converges to the Gaussian distribution for typical sets A. We therefore analyze the probability that at step n the empirical distribution differs from the Gaussian distribution by a constant ε. We show that the decay is doubly exponential in either n or \sqrt{n}, depending on the set A and ε, and we find the leading coefficient in the top exponent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such large deviation probabilities are treated in this model.

The rotor-router group of directed covers of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A rotor-router walk is a deterministic version of a random walk, in which the walker is routed to each of the neighbouring vertices in some fixed cyclic order. We consider here directed covers of graphs (called also periodic trees) and we study several quantities related to rotor-router walks on directed covers. The quantities under consideration are: order of the rotor-router group, order of the root element in the rotor-router group and the connection with random walks.
