Principal Nilpotent pairs in a semisimple Lie algebra, I

This is the first of a series of papers devoted to certain pairs of commuting nilpotent elements in a semisimple Lie algebra that enjoy quite remarkable properties and which are expected to play a major role in Representation theory. The properties of these pairs and their role is similar to those of the principal nilpotents. To any principal nilpotent pair we associate a two-parameter analogue of the Kostant partition function, and propose the corresponding two-parameter analogue of the weight multiplicity formula.
In a different direction, each principal nilpotent pair gives rise to a harmonic polynomial on the Cartesian square of the Cartan subalgebra, that transforms under an irreducible representation of the Weyl group. In the special case of sl_n, the conjugacy classes of principal nilpotent pairs and the irreducible representations of the Symmetric group, S_n, are both parametrised (in a compatible way) by Young diagrams. In general, our theory provides a natural generalization to arbitrary Weyl groups of the classical construction of simple S_n-modules in terms of Young's symmetrisers.

The Jacobi-Trudi formula implies some interesting quadratic identities for characters of representations of $gl_n$. Earlier work of Kirillov and Reshetikhin proposed a generalization of these identities to the other classical Lie algebras, and conjectured that the characters of certain finite-dimensional representations of $U_q(g-affine)$ satisfy it. Here we use a positivity argument to show that the generalized identities have only one solution.

We study the explicit formula of Lusztig's integral forms of the level one quantum affine algebra $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ in the endomorphism ring of symmetric functions in infinitely many variables tensored with the group algebra of $\mathbb Z$. Schur functions are realized as certain orthonormal basis vectors in the vertex representation associated to the standard Heisenberg algebra. In this picture the Littlewood-Richardson rule is expressed by integral formulas, and is used to define the action of Lusztig's $\mathbb Z[q, q]$-form of $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ on Schur polynomials.
A Generalization of Redfield's Master Theorem
Generalizations of Redfield's master theorem and superposition theorem are proved by using decomposition of the tensor product of several induced monomial representations of the symmetric group $S_d$ into transitive constituents. As direct consequences, one obtains several graphical corollaries. Given graphs $Γ_1,\hdots ,Γ_k$, with $d$ vertices, together with their automorphism groups $W_1\leq S_d,\hdots, W_k\leq S_d$, one can find the number of superpositions of $Γ_1,\hdots ,Γ_k$, whose automorphism groups satisfy one of the following conditions: (1) the groups consist of even permutations; (2) the groups are trivial, in case at least one of $W_m$'s is cyclic; (3) the groups are of odd order, in case at least one of $W_m$'s is dihedral and its order is not divisible by 4; (4) the groups are of order dividing a natural number $r$, in case at least one of $W_m$'s has a normal solvable subgroup of order $r$, such that the corresponding factor-group is cyclic of order relatively prime to $r$; (5) the groups are $q$-groups ($q$ is a prime), in case at least one of $W_m$'s has a normal $q$-subgroup such that the corresponding factor-group is cyclic of order relatively prime to $q$.
A Generalization of Polya's Enumeration Theorem or the Secret Life of Certain Index Sets
Polya's fundamental enumeration theorem is generalized in terms of Schur-Macdonald's theory (S-MT) of invariant matrices. Given a permutation group $W\leq S_d$ and a one-dimensional character $χ$ of $W$, the polynomial functor $F_χ$ corresponding via S-MT to the induced monomial representation $U_χ= ind_W^{S_d}(χ)$ of $S_d$, is studied. It turns out that the characteristic $ch(F_χ)$ is the weighted inventory of some set $J(χ)$ of $W$-orbits in the integer-valued hypercube $[0,\infty)^d$. The elements of $J(χ) can be distinguished among all $W$-orbits by a maximum property. The identity $ch(F_χ) = ch(U_χ)$ of both characteristics is a consequence of S-MT. Polya's theorem can be obtained from the above identity by specialization $χ=1_W$, where $1_W$ is the unit character of $W$.
A New Representation of the Riemann Zeta Function $ζ(s)$
A generalization of a well-known relation between the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ and Bernoulli numbers $B_n$ is obtained. The formula is a new representation of the Riemann zeta function in terms of a nested series of Bernoulli numbers.

Multiple zeta values (MZVs, also called Euler sums or multiple harmonic series) are nested generalizations of the classical Riemann zeta function evaluated at integer values. The fact that an integral representation of MZVs obeys a shuffle product rule allows the possibility of a combinatorial approach to them. Using this approach we prove a longstanding conjecture of Don Zagier about MZVs with certain repeated arguments. We also prove a similar cyclic sum identity. Finally, we present extensive computational evidence supporting an infinite family of conjectured MZV identities that simultaneously generalize the Zagier identity.

This paper is concerned with certain connections between the ensemble of n x n unitary matrices -- specifically the characteristic function of the random variable tr(U) -- and combinatorics -- specifically Ulam's problem concerning the distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in permutation groups -- and the appearance of Painleve functions in the answers to apparently unrelated questions. Among the results is a representation in terms of a Painleve V function for the characteristic function of tr(U) and (using recent results of Baik, Deift and Johansson) an expression in terms of a Painleve II function for the limiting distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in the hyperoctahedral group.
Combinatorial Identities Related to Representations of $U_q(\tilde{gl_2})$
Recently N.Jing discovered a certain combinatorial identity from validity of the Serre relations in some vertex representations of quantum Kac-Moody algebras.
We generalize this identity, in particular, extending it from polynomials to elliptic functions, and interprete the obtained identities in terms of tensor products of evaluation representations of the quantum loop algebra $U_q(\tilde{gl_2})$ or the elliptic quantum group $E_{ρ,γ}(sl_2)$.

It was recently shown that the renormalization of quantum field theory is organized by the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted trees, whose coproduct identifies the divergences requiring subtraction and whose antipode achieves this. We automate this process in a few lines of recursive symbolic code, which deliver a finite renormalized expression for any Feynman diagram. We thus verify a representation of the operator product expansion, which generalizes Chen's lemma for iterated integrals. The subset of diagrams whose forest structure entails a unique primitive subdivergence provides a representation of the Hopf algebra ${\cal H}_R$ of undecorated rooted trees. Our undecorated Hopf algebra program is designed to process the 24,213,878 BPHZ contributions to the renormalization of 7,813 diagrams, with up to 12 loops. We consider 10 models, each in 9 renormalization schemes. The two simplest models reveal a notable feature of the subalgebra of Connes and Moscovici, corresponding to the commutative part of the Hopf algebra ${\cal H}_T$ of the diffeomorphism group: it assigns to Feynman diagrams those weights which remove zeta values from the counterterms of the minimal subtraction scheme. We devise a fast algorithm for these weights, whose squares are summed with a permutation factor, to give rational counterterms.

Let k be a field of characteristic zero. We consider graded subalgebras A of k[x_1,...,x_m]/(x_1^2,...,x_m^2) generated by d linearly independant linear forms. Representations of matroids over k provide a natural description of the structure of these algebras. In return, the numerical properties of the Hilbert function of A yield some information about the Tutte polynomial of the corresponding matroid. Isomorphism classes of these algebras correspond to equivalence classes of hyperplane arrangements under the action of the general linear group.

The lattice cell in the ${i+1}^{st}$ row and ${j+1}^{st}$ column of the positive quadrant of the plane is denoted $(i,j)$. If $μ$ is a partition of $n+1$, we denote by $μ/ij$ the diagram obtained by removing the cell $(i,j)$ from the (French) Ferrers diagram of $μ$. We set $Δ_{μ/ij}=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|_{i,j=1}^n$, where $(p_1,q_1),... ,(p_n,q_n)$ are the cells of $μ/ij$, and let ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ be the linear span of the partial derivatives of $Δ_{μ/ij}$. The bihomogeneity of $Δ_{μ/ij}$ and its alternating nature under the diagonal action of $S_n$ gives ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ the structure of a bigraded $S_n$-module. We conjecture that ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ is always a direct sum of $k$ left regular representations of $S_n$, where $k$ is the number of cells that are weakly north and east of $(i,j)$ in $μ$. We also make a number of conjectures describing the precise nature of the bivariate Frobenius characteristic of ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ in terms of the theory of Macdonald polynomials. On the validity of these conjectures, we derive a number of surprising identities. In particular, we obtain a representation theoretical interpretation of the coefficients appearing in some Macdonald Pieri Rules.

This work studies the remarkable relationships that hold among certain m-tuples of the Garsia-Haiman modules $ {\bf M}_μ$ and corresponding elements of the Macdonald basis. We recall that ${\bf M}_μ$ is defined for a partition $μ\part n$, as the linear span of derivatives of a certain bihomogeneous polynomial $Δ_ μ(x,y)$ in the variables $x_1,x_2,..., x_n, y_1,y_2,..., y_n$. It has been conjectured by Garsia and Haiman that ${\bf M}_μ$ has $n!$ dimensions and that its bigraded Frobenius characteristic is given by the symmetric polynomial ${\widetilde{H}}_μ(x;q,t)=\sum_{λ\part n} S_λ(X) {\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)$ where the ${\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)$ are related to the Macdonald $q,t$-Kostka coefficients $ K_{λμ}(q,t)$ by the identity ${\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)=K_{λμ}(q,1/t)t^{n(μ)}$ with $n(μ)$ the x-degree of $Δ_ μ(x;y)$. Computer data has suggested that as $ν$ varies among the immediate predecessors of a partition $μ$, the spaces ${\bf M}_ν$ behave like a boolean lattice. We formulate a number of remarkable conjectures about the Macdonald polynomials. In particular we obtain a representation theoretical interpretation for some of the symmetries that can be found in the computed tables of $q,t$-Kostka coefficients.
Finite Dimensional Representations of Quantum Affine Algebras
We investigate the characters of some finite-dimensional representations of the quantum affine algebras $U_q(\hat{g})$ using the action of the copy of $U_q(g)$ embedded in it.
First, we present an efficient algorithm for computing the Kirillov-Reshetikhin conjectured formula for these characters when $g$ is simply-laced. This replaces the original formulation, in terms of "rigged configurations", with one based on polygonal paths in the Weyl chamber. It also gives a new algorithm for decomposing a tensor product of any number of representations of $sl(n)$ corresponding to rectangular Young diagrams, in a way symmetric in all the factors. This section is an expanded version of q-alg/9611032 .
Second, we study a generalization of certain remarkable quadratic relations that hold among characters of $sl(n)$ (the "discrete Hirota relations") whose solutions seem to be characters of quantum affine algebras. We use show that these relations have a unique solution over characters of $U_q(g)$.

We introduce the honeycomb model of BZ polytopes, which calculate Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, the tensor product rule for GL(n). Our main result is the existence of a particularly well-behaved honeycomb with given boundary conditions (choice of triple of representations to be tensored together). This honeycomb is necessarily integral, which proves the "saturation conjecture", extending results of Klyachko to give a complete answer to which L-R coefficients are positive. This in turn has as a consequence Horn's conjecture from 1962 characterizing the spectrum of the sum of two Hermitian matrices.

The leafage l(G) of a chordal graph G is the minimum number of leaves of a tree in which G has an intersection representation by subtrees. We obtain upper and lower bounds on l(G) and compute it on special classes. The maximum of l(G) on n-vertex graphs is n - lg n - (1/2) lg lg n + O(1). The proper leafage l*(G) is the minimum number of leaves when no subtree may contain another; we obtain upper and lower bounds on l*(G). Leafage equals proper leafage on claw-free chordal graphs. We use asteroidal sets and structural properties of chordal graphs.
Crystal Bases of Quantum Affine Algebras and Affine Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials
We present a fast version of the algorithm of Lascoux, Leclerc, and Thibon for the lower global crystal base for the Fock representation of quantum affine sl_n. We also show that the coefficients of the lower global crystal base coincide with certain affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. It is known that the coefficients of the global crystal base are q-analogues of decomposition numbers for Specht modules of the Hecke algebra of type A_n, and that the coefficients of the affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials are q-analogues of decomposition numbers for tilting modules for quantum sl_k. Thus our algorithm allows fast computation of these decomposition numbers.

We compute the weights, i.e. the values at the minimal idempotents, for the Markov trace on the Hecke algebra of type $B$ and type $D$. In order to prove the weight formula, we define representations of the Hecke algebra of type $B$ onto a reduced Hecke algebre of type $A$. To compute the weights for type $D$ we use the inclusion of the Hecke algebra of type $D$ into the Hecke algebra of type $B$.
