Spectral zeta functions of graphs and the Riemann zeta function in the critical strip
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate the study of spectral zeta functions $ζ_{X}$ for finite and infinite graphs $X$, instead of the Ihara zeta function, with a perspective towards zeta functions from number theory and connections to hypergeometric functions. The Riemann hypothesis is shown to be equivalent to an approximate functional equation of graph zeta functions. The latter holds at all points where Riemann's zeta function $ζ(s)$ is non-zero. This connection arises via a detailed study of the asymptotics of the spectral zeta functions of finite torus graphs in the critcal strip and estimates on the real part of the logarithmic derivative of $ζ(s)$. We relate $ζ_{\mathbb{Z}}$ to Euler's beta integral and show how to complete it giving the functional equation $ξ_{\mathbb{Z}}(1-s)=ξ_{\mathbb{Z}}(s)$. This function appears in the theory of Eisenstein series although presumably with this spectral intepretation unrecognized. In higher dimensions $d$ we provide a meromorphic continuation of $ζ_{\mathbb{Z}^{d}}(s)$ to the whole plane and identify the poles. From our aymptotics several known special values of $ζ(s)$ are derived as well as its non-vanishing on the line $Re(s)=1$. We determine the spectral zeta functions of regular trees and show it to be equal to a specialization of Appell's hypergeometric function $F_{1}$ via an Euler-type integral formula due to Picard.

Refinements of Gál's theorem and applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a simple proof of a well-known theorem of Gál and of the recent related results of Aistleitner, Berkes and Seip [1] regarding the size of GCD sums. In fact, our method obtains the asymptotically sharp constant in Gál's theorem, which is new. Our approach also gives a transparent explanation of the relationship between the maximal size of the Riemann zeta function on vertical lines and bounds on GCD sums; a point which was previously unclear. Furthermore we obtain sharp bounds on the spectral norm of GCD matrices which settles a question raised in [2]. We use bounds for the spectral norm to show that series formed out of dilates of periodic functions of bounded variation converge almost everywhere if the coefficients of the series are in $L^2 (\log\log 1/L)^γ$, with $γ> 2$. This was previously known with $γ>4$, and is known to fail for $γ<2$. We also develop a sharp Carleson-Hunt-type theorem for functions of bounded variations which settles another question raised in [1]. Finally we obtain almost sure bounds for partial sums of dilates of periodic functions of bounded variations improving [1]. This implies almost sure bounds for the discrepancy of $\{n_k x\}$ with $n_k$ an arbitrary growing sequences of integers.

An Abstraction of Whitney's Broken Circuit Theorem
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 21 (2014) #P4.32 • View PublicationBIB
We establish a broad generalization of Whitney's broken circuit theorem on the chromatic polynomial of a graph to sums of type $\sum_{A\subseteq S} f(A)$ where $S$ is a finite set and $f$ is a mapping from the power set of $S$ into an abelian group. We give applications to the domination polynomial and the subgraph component polynomial of a graph, the chromatic polynomial of a hypergraph, the characteristic polynomial and Crapo's beta invariant of a matroid, and the principle of inclusion-exclusion. Thus, we discover several known and new results in a concise and unified way. As further applications of our main result, we derive a new generalization of the maximums-minimums identity and of a theorem due to Blass and Sagan on the Möbius function of a finite lattice, which generalizes Rota's crosscut theorem. For the classical Möbius function, both Euler's totient function and its Dirichlet inverse, and the reciprocal of the Riemann zeta function we obtain new expansions involving the greatest common divisor resp. least common multiple. We finally establish an even broader generalization of Whitney's broken circuit theorem in the context of convex geometries (antimatroids).

Monotonicity and log-behavior of some functions related to the Euler Gamma function
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to develop analytic techniques to deal with certain monotonicity of combinatorial sequences. (1) A criterion for the monotonicity of the function $\sqrt[x]{f(x)}$ is given, which is a continuous analog for one result of Wang and Zhu. (2) The log-behavior of the functions $θ(x)=\sqrt[x]{2 ζ(x)Γ(x+1)}$ and $F(x)=\sqrt[x]{\frac{Γ(ax+b+1)}{Γ(c x+d+1)Γ(e x+f+1)}}$ is considered, where $ζ(x)$ and $Γ(x)$ are the Riemann zeta function and the Euler Gamma function, respectively. As consequences, the strict log-concavities of the function $θ(x)$ (a conjecture of Chen {\it et al.}) and $\{\sqrt[n]{z_n}\}$ for some combinatorial sequences (including the Bernoulli numbers, the Tangent numbers, the Catalan numbers, the Fuss-Catalan numbers and some Binomial coefficients) are demonstrated. In particular, this contains some results of Chen {\it et al.}, Luca and Stănică. (3). By researching logarithmically complete monotonicity of some functions, the infinite log-monotonicity of the sequence $\{\frac{(n_{0}+ia)!}{(k_0+ib)!(\overline{k_0}+i\overline{b})!}\}_{i\geq0}$ is proved. This generalizes two results of Chen {\it et al.} that both the Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$ and central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$ are infinitely log-monotonic and strengths one result of Su and Wang that $\binom{dn}{δn}$ is log-convex in $n$. (4) The asymptotically infinite log-monotonicity of derangement numbers is showed. (5)The logarithmically complete monotonicity of functions $1/\sqrt[x]{a ζ(x+b)Γ(x+c)}$ and $\sqrt[x]{ρ\prod_{i=1}^n\frac{Γ(x+a_i)}{Γ(x+b_i)}}$ is also obtained, which generalizes the results of Lee and Tepedelenlioǧlu, Qi and Li.

Polylogarithm approaches to Riemann Zeta function zeroes
We use visible point vector identities to examine polylogarithms in the neighbourhood of the Riemann zeta function zeroes. New formulas limiting to the trivial zeroes and to the critical line on the zeta function are given. Similar results arise from Euler-Zagier sums given in Bailey, Borwein and Crandall [4] providing new infinite product identities.
Zeta Functions and the Log-behavior of Combinatorial Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use the Riemann zeta function $ζ(x)$ and the Bessel zeta function $ζ_μ(x)$ to study the log-behavior of combinatorial sequences. We prove that $ζ(x)$ is log-convex for $x>1$. As a consequence, we deduce that the sequence $\{|B_{2n}|/(2n)!\}_{n\geq 1}$ is log-convex, where $B_n$ is the $n$-th Bernoulli number. We introduce the function $θ(x)=(2ζ(x)Γ(x+1))^{\frac{1}{x}}$, where $Γ(x)$ is the gamma function, and we show that $\log θ(x)$ is strictly increasing for $x\geq 6$. This confirms a conjecture of Sun stating that the sequence $\{\sqrt[n] {|B_{2n}}|\}_{n\geq 1}$ is strictly increasing. Amdeberhan, Moll and Vignat defined the numbers $a_n(μ)=2^{2n+1}(n+1)!(μ+1)_nζ_μ(2n)$ and conjectured that the sequence $\{a_n(μ)\}_{n\geq 1}$ is log-convex for $μ=0$ and $μ=1$. By proving that $ζ_μ(x)$ is log-convex for $x>1$ and $μ>-1$, we show that the sequence $\{a_n(μ)\}_{n\geq 1}$ is log-convex for any $μ>-1$. We introduce another function $θ_μ(x)$ involving $ζ_μ(x)$ and the gamma function $Γ(x)$ and we show that $\log θ_μ(x)$ is strictly increasing for $x>8e(μ+2)^2$. This implies that $\sqrt[n]{a_n(μ)}<\sqrt[n+1]{a_{n+1}(μ)}$ for $n> 4e(μ+2)^2$. Based on Dobinski's formula, we prove that $\sqrt[n]{B_n}<\sqrt[n+1]{B_{n+1}}$ for $n\geq 1$, where $B_n$ is the $n$-th Bell number. This confirms another conjecture of Sun. We also establish a connection between the increasing property of $\{\sqrt[n]{B_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$ and Hölder's inequality in probability theory.

Combinatorics of lower order terms in the moment conjectures for the Riemann zeta function
Conrey, Farmer, Keating, Rubinstein and Snaith have given a recipe that conjecturally produces, among others, the full moment polynomial for the Riemann zeta function. The leading term of this polynomial is given as a product of a factor explained by arithmetic and a factor explained by combinatorics (or, alternatively, random matrices). We explain how the lower order terms arise, and clarify the dependency of each factor on the exponent $k$ that is considered. We use extensively the theory of symmetric functions and representations of symmetric groups, ideas of Lascoux on manipulations of alphabets, and a key lemma, due in a basic version to Bump and Gamburd. Our main result ends up involving dimensions of skew partitions, as studied by Olshanski, Regev, Vershik, Ivanov and others. In this article, we also lay the groundwork for later unification of the combinatorial computations for lower order terms in the moments conjectures across families of $L$-functions of unitary, orthogonal and symplectic types.
An interface between physics and number theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the Hopf algebra description of a simple quantum system given previously, to a more elaborate Hopf algebra, which is rich enough to encompass that related to a description of perturbative quantum field theory (pQFT). This provides a {\em mathematical} route from an algebraic description of non-relativistic, non-field theoretic quantum statistical mechanics to one of relativistic quantum field theory. Such a description necessarily involves treating the algebra of polyzeta functions, extensions of the Riemann Zeta function, since these occur naturally in pQFT. This provides a link between physics, algebra and number theory. As a by-product of this approach, we are led to indicate {\it inter alia} a basis for concluding that the Euler gamma constant $γ$ may be rational.

New series for some special values of $L$-functions
Published in Nanjing Univ. J. Math. Biquarterly 32(2015), no. 2, 189--218 • Search Publication
Dirichlet's $L$-functions are natural extensions of the Riemann zeta function. In this paper we first give a brief survey of Apéry-like series for some special values of the zeta function and certain $L$-functions. Then, we establish two theorems on transformations of certain kinds of congruences. Motivated by the results and based on our computation, we pose 48 new conjectural series (most of which involve harmonic numbers) for such special values and related constants. For example, we conjecture that \begin{align*}\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac1{k^4\binom{2k}k}\bigg(\frac1k+\sum_{j=k}^{2k}\frac1j\bigg)=&\frac{11}9ζ(5), \\\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{(-1)^{k-1}}{k^3\binom{2k}k}\bigg(\frac1{5k^3}+\sum_{j=1}^{k}\frac1{j^3}\bigg)=&\frac{2}5ζ(3)^2, \end{align*} and $$\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{48^k}{k(2k-1)\binom{4k}{2k}\binom{2k}k}=\frac{15}2\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{(\frac k3)}{k^2},$$ where $(\frac k3)$ denotes the Legendre symbol.

On some expansions for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function
Published in Grzegorz Rzadkowski, On some expansions for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function, J. Comp. Appl. Math. 236 (2012) pp. 3710-3719 • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper we introduce some expansions, based on the falling factorials, for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function. In the proofs we use the Faá di Bruno formula, Bell polynomials, potential polynomials, Mittag-Leffler polynomials, derivative polynomials and special numbers (Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of both kinds). We investigate the rate of convergence of the series and give some numerical examples.
Combinatorial remarks on the cyclic sum formula for multiple zeta values

The multiple zeta values are generalizations of the values of the Riemann zeta function at positive integers. They are known to satisfy a number of relations, among which are the cyclic sum formula. The cyclic sum formula can be stratified via linear operators defined by the second and third authors. We give the number of relations belonging to each stratum by combinatorial arguments.

Universality of the limit shape of convex lattice polygonal lines
Published in Annals of Probability 2011, Vol. 39, No. 6, 2271-2317 • View PublicationBIB
Let ${\varPi}_n$ be the set of convex polygonal lines $\varGamma$ with vertices on $\mathbb {Z}_+^2$ and fixed endpoints $0=(0,0)$ and $n=(n_1,n_2)$. We are concerned with the limit shape, as $n\to\infty$, of "typical" $\varGamma\in {\varPi}_n$ with respect to a parametric family of probability measures $\{P_n^r,0<r<\infty\}$ on ${\varPi}_n$, including the uniform distribution ($r=1$) for which the limit shape was found in the early 1990s independently by A. M. Vershik, I. Bárány and Ya. G. Sinai. We show that, in fact, the limit shape is universal in the class $\{P^r_n\}$, even though $P^r_n$ ($r\ne1$) and $P^1_n$ are asymptotically singular. Measures $P^r_n$ are constructed, following Sinai's approach, as conditional distributions $Q_z^r(\cdot |{\varPi}_n)$, where $Q_z^r$ are suitable product measures on the space ${\varPi}=\bigcup_n{\varPi}_n$, depending on an auxiliary "free" parameter $z=(z_1,z_2)$. The transition from $({\varPi},Q_z^r)$ to $({\varPi}_n,P_n^r)$ is based on the asymptotics of the probability $Q_z^r({\varPi}_n)$, furnished by a certain two-dimensional local limit theorem. The proofs involve subtle analytical tools including the Möbius inversion formula and properties of zeroes of the Riemann zeta function.

Generating function identities for $ζ(2n+2), ζ(2n+3)$ via the WZ method

Irrationalité aux entiers impairs positifs d'un q-analogue de la fonction zeta de Riemann
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we focus on a q-analogue of the Riemann zeta function at positive integers, which can be written for s\in\N^* by ζ_q(s)=\sum_{k\geq 1}q^k\sum_{d|k}d^{s-1}. We give a new lower bound for the dimension of the vector space over \Q spanned, for 1/q\in\Z\setminus\{-1;1\} and an even integer A, by 1,ζ_q(3),ζ_q(5),...,ζ_q(A-1). This improves a recent result of Krattenthaler, Rivoal and Zudilin (\emph{Séries hypergéométriques basiques, q-analogues des valeurs de la fonction zeta et séries d'Eisenstein}, J. Inst. Jussieu {\bf 5}.1 (2006), 53-79). In particular, a consequence of our result is that for 1/q\in\Z\setminus\{-1;1\}, at least one of the numbers ζ_q(3),ζ_q(5),ζ_q(7),ζ_q(9) is irrational.

Two Bessel Bridges Conditioned Never to Collide, Double Dirichlet Series, and Jacobi Theta Function
Published in J.Stat.Phys.131:1067-1083,2008 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the moments of the maximum value of a one-dimensional conditional Brownian motion, the three-dimensional Bessel bridge with duration 1 started from the origin, are expressed using the Riemann zeta function. We consider a system of two Bessel bridges, in which noncolliding condition is imposed. We show that the moments of the maximum value is then expressed using the double Dirichlet series, or using the integrals of products of the Jacobi theta functions and its derivatives. Since the present system will be provided as a diffusion scaling limit of a version of vicious walker model, the ensemble of 2-watermelons with a wall, the dominant terms in long-time asymptotics of moments of height of 2-watermelons are completely determined. For the height of 2-watermelons with a wall, the average value was recently studied by Fulmek by a method of enumerative combinatorics.

On Plouffe's Ramanujan Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Simon Plouffe has discovered a number of identities for the Riemann zeta function at odd integer values. These identities are obtained numerically and are inspired by a prototypical series for Apery's constant given by Ramanujan: $ζ(3)=\frac{7π^3}{180}-2\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{1}{n^3(e^{2πn}-1)}$ Such sums follow from a general relation given by Ramanujan, which is rediscovered and proved here using complex analytic techniques. The general relation is used to derive many of Plouffe's identities as corollaries. The resemblance of the general relation to the structure of theta functions and modular forms is briefly sketched.

The Probability of Choosing Primitive Sets
Published in Journal of Number Theory 125 (2007), 39-49 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize a theorem of Nymann that the density of points in Z^d that are visible from the origin is 1/zeta(d), where zeta(a) is the Riemann zeta function 1/1^a + 1/2^a + 1/3^a + ... A subset S of Z^d is called primitive if it is a Z-basis for the lattice composed of the integer points in the R-span of S, or, equivalently, if S can be completed to a Z-basis of Z^d. We prove that if m points in Z^d are chosen uniformly and independently at random from a large box, then as the size of the box goes to infinity, the probability that the points form a primitive set approaches 1/[ζ(d)ζ(d-1)...zeta(d-m+1)].
Non-Holonomicity of Sequences Defined via Elementary Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new method for proving non-holonomicity of sequences, which is based on results about the number of zeros of elementary and of analytic functions. Our approach is applicable to sequences that are defined as the values of an elementary function at positive integral arguments. We generalize several recent results; e.g., non-holonomicity of the logarithmic sequence is extended to rational functions involving $\log n$. Moreover, we show that the sequence that arises from evaluating the Riemann zeta function at odd integers is not holonomic.

Irrationalité de valeurs de zêta (d'après Apéry, Rivoal, ...)
Published in Séminaire Bourbaki 2002-2003 exposé no. 910 (Nov. 2002); Astérisque 294 (2004), 27-62 • Search Publication
This survey text deals with irrationality, and linear independence over the rationals, of values at positive odd integers of Riemann zeta function. The first section gives all known proofs (and connections between them) of Apéry's Theorem (1978) : $ζ(3)$ is irrational. The second section is devoted to a variant of the proof, published by Rivoal and Ball-Rivoal, that infinitely many $ζ(2n+1)$ are irrational. The end of this text deals with more quantitative statements.
