Combinatorics of semi-toric degenerations of Schubert varieties in type C
An approach to Schubert calculus is to realize Schubert classes as concrete combinatorial objects such as Schubert polynomials. Using the polytope ring of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin realized each Schubert class as a sum of reduced Kogan faces. The first named author introduced a generalization of reduced Kogan faces to symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes using a semi-toric degeneration of a Schubert variety, and extended the result of Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin to type C case. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial model to this type C generalization using a kind of pipe dream with self-crossings. As an application, we prove that the type C generalization can be constructed by skew mitosis operators.

Schubert puzzles and integrability III: separated descents
In paper I of this series we gave positive formulae for expanding the product $\mathfrak S^π\mathfrak S^ρ$ of two Schubert polynomials, in the case that both $π,ρ$ had shared descent set of size $\leq 3$. Here we introduce and give positive formulae for two new classes of Schubert product problems: separated descent in which $π$'s last descent occurs at (or before) $ρ$'s first, and almost separated descent in which $π$'s last two descents occur at (or before) $ρ$'s first two respectively. In both cases our puzzle formulae extend to $K$-theory (multiplying Grothendieck polynomials), and in the separated descent case, to equivariant $K$-theory. The two formulae arise (via quantum integrability) from fusion of minuscule quantized loop algebra representations in types $A$, $D$ respectively.

Forest polynomials and the class of the permutahedral variety
We study a basis of the polynomial ring that we call forest polynomials. This family of polynomials is indexed by a combinatorial structure called indexed forests and permits several definitions, one of which involves flagged P-partitions. As such, these polynomials have a positive expansion in the basis of slide polynomials. By a novel insertion procedure that may be viewed as a generalization of the Sylvester correspondence we establish that Schubert polynomials decompose positively in terms of forest polynomials. Our insertion procedure involves a correspondence on words which allows us to show that forest polynomials multiply positively. We proceed to show that forest polynomials are a particularly convenient basis in regards to studying the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo the ideal of positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials. This aspect allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative integral description for the Schubert class expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in terms of a parking procedure. We study the associated combinatorics in depth and introduce a multivariate extension of mixed Eulerian numbers.

Connection between Schubert polynomials and top Lascoux polynomials
Schubert polynomials form a basis of the polynomial ring. This basis and its structure constants have received extensive study. Recently, Pan and Yu initiated the study of top Lascoux polynomials. These polynomials form a basis of a subalgebra of the polynomial ring where each graded piece has finite dimension. This paper connects Schubert polynomials and top Lascoux polynomials via a simple operator. We use this connection to show these two bases share the same structure constants. We also translate several results on Schubert polynomials to top Lascoux polynomials, including combinatorial formulas for their monomial expansions and supports.

Crystals for shifted key polynomials
Published in Algebras and Representation Theory 28 (2025), 921-979 • View PublicationBIB
This article continues our study of $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials, which are (non-symmetric) "partial" Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions as well as "shifted" versions of key polynomials. Our main results provide a crystal interpretation of $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials, namely, as the characters of certain connected subcrystals of normal crystals associated to the queer Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{q}_n$. In the $P$-key case, the ambient normal crystals are the $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals studied by Grantcharov et al., while in the $Q$-key case, these are replaced by the extended $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals recently introduced by the first author and Tong. Using these constructions, we propose a crystal-theoretic lift of several conjectures about the decomposition of involution Schubert polynomials into $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials. We verify these generalized conjectures in a few special cases. Along the way, we establish some miscellaneous results about normal $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals and Demazure $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-crystals.

James reduced product schemes and double quasisymmetric functions
Symmetric function theory is a key ingredient in the Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Quasisymmetric functions are analogues that are similarly central to algebraic combinatorics, but for which the associated geometry is poorly developed. Baker and Richter (2008) showed that $\textrm{QSym}$ manifests topologically as the cohomology ring of the loop suspension of infinite projective space or equivalently of its combinatorial homotopy model, the James reduced product $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. In recent work, we used this viewpoint to develop topologically-motivated bases of $\textrm{QSym}$ and initiate a Schubert calculus for $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$ in both cohomology and $K$-theory. Here, we study the torus-equivariant cohomology of $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. We identify a cellular basis and introduce double monomial quasisymmetric functions as combinatorial representatives, analogous to the factorial Schur functions and double Schubert polynomials of classical Schubert calculus. We also provide a combinatorial Littlewood--Richardson rule for the structure coefficients of this basis. Furthermore, we introduce an algebro-geometric analogue of the James reduced product construction. In particular, we prove that the James reduced product of a complex projective variety also carries the structure of a projective variety.

Knuth moves for Schubert polynomials
In our previous work we have introduced an analogue of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence for Schubert calculus of the complete flag varieties. The objects inserted are certain biwords, the outcomes of insertion are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are decorated chains in Bruhat order. In this paper we study a class of biwords that have a certain associativity property; we call them plactic biwords. We introduce analogues of Knuth moves on plactic biwords, and prove that any two plactic biwords with the same insertion bumpless pipe dream are connected by those moves.

Key and Lascoux polynomials for symmetric orbit closures
We introduce shifted analogues of key polynomials related to symplectic and orthogonal orbit closures in the complete flag variety. Our definitions are given by applying isobaric divided difference operators to the analogues of Schubert polynomials for orbit closures that correspond to dominant involutions. We show that our shifted key polynomials are linear combinations of key polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients. We also prove that they are partial versions of the classical Schur $P$- and $Q$-polynomials. Finally, we examine $K$-theoretic generalizations of these functions, which give shifted forms of Lascoux polynomials. In the symplectic case, these generalizations are partial versions of the $GP$-polynomials introduced by Ikeda and Naruse. Besides developing basic properties, we identify a number of conjectures and open problems.
K-polynomials of multiplicity-free varieties
We describe the twisted $K$-polynomial of multiplicity-free varieties in a multiprojective setting. More precisely, for multiplicity-free varieties, we show that the support of the twisted $K$-polynomial is a generalized polymatroid. As applications, we show that the support of the Möbius function of a linear polymatroid is a generalized polymatroid, and we settle a conjecture of Monical, Tokcan and Yong regarding Grothendieck polynomials for the case of zero-one Schubert polynomials.

Monk rules for type $GL_n$ Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give Monk rules for Macdonald polynomials which are analogous to the Monk rules for Schubert polynomials. These formulas are similar to the formulas given by Baratta (2008), but our method of derivation is to use Cherednik's interwiners. Deriving Monk rules by this technique addresses the relationship between the work of Baratta and the product formulas of Yip (2010). Specializations of the Monk formula's at $q=0$ and/or $t=0$ provide Monk rules for Iwahori-spherical polynomials and for finite and affine key polynomials.

Pattern bounds for principal specializations of $β$-Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
There has been recent interest in lower bounds for the principal specializations of Schubert polynomials $ν_w := \mathfrak S_w(1,\dots,1)$. We prove a conjecture of Yibo Gao in the setting of $1243$-avoiding permutations that gives a lower bound for $ν_w$ in terms of the permutation patterns contained in $w$. We extended this result to principal specializations of $β$-Grothendieck polynomials $ν^{(β)}_w := \mathfrak G^{(β)}_w(1,\dots,1)$ by restricting to the class of vexillary $1243$-avoiding permutations. Our methods are bijective, offering a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients $c_w$ and $c^{(β)}_w$ appearing in these conjectures.

Proof of a conjectured Möbius inversion formula for Grothendieck polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_w$ are polynomial representatives for cohomology classes of Schubert varieties in a complete flag variety, while Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}_w$ are analogous representatives for the $K$-theory classes of the structure sheaves of Schubert varieties. In the special case that $\mathfrak{S}_w$ is a multiplicity-free sum of monomials, K. Mészáros, L. Setiabrata, and A. St. Dizier conjectured that $\mathfrak{G}_w$ can be easily computed from $\mathfrak{S}_w$ via Möbius inversion on a certain poset. We prove this conjecture.

The combinatorics of hopping particles and positivity in Markov chains
The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is a model for translation in protein synthesis and traffic flow; it can be defined as a Markov chain describing particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice. In this article I give an overview of some of the connections of the stationary distribution of the ASEP to combinatorics (tableaux and multiline queues) and special functions (Askey-Wilson polynomials, Macdonald polynomials, and Schubert polynomials). I also make some general observations about positivity in Markov chains.

Semi-toric degenerations of Richardson varieties arising from cluster structures on flag varieties
A toric degeneration of an irreducible variety is a flat degeneration to an irreducible toric variety. In the case of a flag variety, its toric degeneration with desirable properties induces degenerations of Richardson varieties to unions of irreducible closed toric subvarieties, called semi-toric degenerations. For instance, Morier-Genoud proved that Caldero's toric degenerations arising from string polytopes have this property. Semi-toric degenerations are closely related to Schubert calculus. Indeed, Kogan-Miller constructed semi-toric degenerations of Schubert varieties from Knutson-Miller's semi-toric degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties which give a geometric proof of the pipe dream formula of Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we focus on a toric degeneration of a flag variety arising from a cluster structure, and prove that it induces semi-toric degenerations of Richardson varieties. Our semi-toric degeneration can be regarded as a generalization of Morier-Genoud's and Kogan-Miller's semi-toric degenerations.
Double Schubert polynomials do have saturated Newton polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that double Schubert polynomials have the Saturated Newton Polytope property. This settles a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan and Yong. Our ideas are motivated by the theory of multidegrees. We introduce a notion of standardization of ideals that enables us to study non-standard multigradings. This allows us to show that the support of the multidegree polynomial of each Cohen-Macaulay prime ideal, and in particular, that of each Schubert determinantal ideal is a discrete polymatroid.

Bumpless pipe dreams encode Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials
In their study of infinite flag varieties, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2021) introduced bumpless pipe dreams in a new combinatorial formula for double Schubert polynomials. These polynomials are the TxT-equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties and of their flat degenerations. We give diagonal term orders with respect to which bumpless pipe dreams index the irreducible components of diagonal Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties, counted with scheme-theoretic multiplicity. This indexing was conjectured by Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt (2022). This result establishes that bumpless pipe dreams are dual to and as geometrically natural as classical pipe dreams, for which an analogous anti-diagonal theory was developed by Knutson and Miller (2005).

Grothendieck to Lascoux expansions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish the conjecture of Reiner and Yong for an explicit combinatorial formula for the expansion of a Grothendieck polynomial into the basis of Lascoux polynomials. This expansion is a subtle refinement of its symmetric function version due to Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong, which gives the expansion of stable Grothendieck polynomials indexed by permutations into Grassmannian stable Grothendieck polynomials. Our expansion is the K-theoretic analogue of that of a Schubert polynomial into Demazure characters, whose symmetric analogue is the expansion of a Stanley symmetric function into Schur functions. Our expansions extend to flagged Grothendieck polynomials.

Schubert polynomials, the inhomogeneous TASEP, and evil-avoiding permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. (Otherwise nothing happens.) In the case that $y_i=0$ for all $i$, the stationary distribution was conjecturally linked to Schubert polynomials by Lam-Williams, and explicit formulas for steady state probabilities were subsequently given in terms of multiline queues by Ayyer-Linusson and Arita-Mallick. In the case of general $y_i$, Cantini showed that $n$ of the $n!$ states have probabilities proportional to products of double Schubert polynomials. In this paper we introduce the class of evil-avoiding permutations, which are the permutations avoiding the patterns $2413, 4132, 4213$ and $3214$. We show that there are $\frac{(2+\sqrt{2})^{n-1}+(2-\sqrt{2})^{n-1}}{2}$ evil-avoiding permutations in $S_n$, and for each evil-avoiding permutation $w$, we give an explicit formula for the steady state probability $ψ_w$ as a product of double Schubert polynomials. We also show that the Schubert polynomials that arise in these formulas are flagged Schur functions, and give a bijection in this case between multiline queues and semistandard Young tableaux.

Infinite flags and Schubert polynomials
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e36 • View PublicationBIB
We study Schubert polynomials using geometry of infinite-dimensional flag varieties and degeneracy loci. Applications include Graham-positivity of coefficients appearing in equivariant coproduct formulas and expansions of back-stable and enriched Schubert polynomials. We also construct an embedding of the type C flag variety, and study the corresponding pullback map on (equivariant) cohomology rings.
Principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules
Schur polynomials are special cases of Schubert polynomials, which in turn are special cases of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. The principal specialization of Schur and Schubert polynomials has a long history, with Macdonald famously expressing the principal specialization of any Schubert polynomial in terms of reduced words. We study the principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl~modules. Our result yields an alternative proof of a conjecture of Stanley about the principal specialization of Schubert polynomials, originally proved by Weigandt.
