The cohomology of the affine flag variety of a complex reductive group is a comodule over the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. We give positive formulae for the coproduct of an affine Schubert class in terms of affine Stanley classes and finite Schubert classes, in (torus-equivariant) cohomology and K-theory. As an application, we deduce monomial positivity for the affine Schubert polynomials of the second author.
Twisted Schubert polynomials

We prove that twisted versions of Schubert polynomials defined by $\widetilde{\mathfrak S}_{w_0} = x_1^{n-1}x_2^{n-2} \cdots x_{n-1}$ and $\widetilde{\mathfrak S}_{ws_i} = (s_i+\partial_i)\widetilde{\mathfrak S}_w$ are monomial positive and give a combinatorial formula for their coefficients. In doing so, we reprove and extend a previous result about positivity of skew divided difference operators and show how it implies the Pieri rule for Schubert polynomials. We also give positive formulas for double versions of the $\widetilde{\mathfrak S}_w$ as well as their localizations.
Positivity determines the quantum cohomology of Grassmannians
We prove that if X is a Grassmannian of type A, then the Schubert basis of the (small) quantum cohomology ring QH(X) is the only homogeneous deformation of the Schubert basis of the ordinary cohomology ring of X that multiplies with non-negative structure constants. This implies that the (three point, genus zero) Gromov-Witten invariants of X are uniquely determined by Witten's presentation of QH(X) and the fact that they are non-negative. We conjecture that the same is true for any flag variety X = G/P of simply laced Lie type. For the variety GL(n)/B of complete flags, this conjecture is equivalent to Fomin, Gelfand, and Postnikov's conjecture that the quantum Schubert polynomials of type A are uniquely determined by positivity properties. Our proof for Grassmannians answers a question of Fulton.

We prove a common generalization of the fact that the weighted number of maximal chains in the strong Bruhat order on the symmetric group is ${n \choose 2}!$ for both the code weights and the Chevalley weights. We also define weights which give a one-parameter family of strong order analogues of Macdonald's reduced word identity for Schubert polynomials.
Zero-one Schubert polynomials
We prove that if $σ\in S_m$ is a pattern of $w \in S_n$, then we can express the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ as a monomial times $\mathfrak{S}_σ$ (in reindexed variables) plus a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. This implies that the set of permutations whose Schubert polynomials have all their coefficients equal to either 0 or 1 is closed under pattern containment. Using Magyar's orthodontia, we characterize this class by a list of twelve avoided patterns. We also give other equivalent conditions on $\mathfrak{S}_w$ being zero-one. In this case, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ is equal to the integer point transform of a generalized permutahedron.
A generalization of Edelman--Greene insertion for Schubert polynomials
Edelman and Greene generalized the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence to reduced words in order to give a bijective proof of the Schur positivity of Stanley symmetric functions. Stanley symmetric functions may be regarded as the stable limits of Schubert polynomials, and similarly Schur functions may be regarded as the stable limits of Demazure characters for the general linear group. We modify the Edelman--Greene correspondence to give an analogous, explicit formula for the Demazure character expansion of Schubert polynomials. Our techniques utilize dual equivalence and its polynomial variation, but here we demonstrate how to extract explicit formulas from that machinery which may be applied to other positivity problems as well.
Schubert polynomials as projections of Minkowski sums of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes

Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes are classical objects in algebraic combinatorics arising in the representation theory of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The integer point transform of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ)$ projects to the Schur function $s_λ$. Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring of symmetric functions; they are also special cases of Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ corresponding to Grassmannian permutations.
For any permutation $w \in S_n$ with column-convex Rothe diagram, we construct a polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ whose integer point transform projects to the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$. Such a construction has been sought after at least since the construction of twisted cubes by Grossberg and Karshon in 1994, whose integer point transforms project to Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ for all $w \in S_n$. However, twisted cubes are not honest polytopes; rather one can think of them as signed polytopal complexes. Our polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ is a convex polytope. We also show that $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ is a Minkowski sum of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes of varying sizes. When the permutation $w$ is Grassmannian, the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope is recovered. We conclude by showing that the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope is a flow polytope.
Universal graph Schubert varieties
We consider the loci of invertible linear maps $f : \mathbb{C}^n \to {(\mathbb{C}^n)}^*$ together with pairs of flags $(E_\bullet, F_\bullet)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the various restrictions $f : F_j \to E_i^*$ have specified ranks. Identifying an invertible linear map with its graph viewed as a point in a Grassmannian, we show that the closures of these loci have cohomology classes represented by the back-stable Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. As a special case, we recover the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that Stanley symmetric functions represent the classes of graph Schubert varieties.
We consider similar loci where $f$ is restricted to be symmetric or skew-symmetric. Their classes are now given by back-stable versions of the polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong to represent classes of orbit closures for the orthogonal and symplectic groups acting on the type A flag variety. Using degeneracy locus formulas of Kazarian and of Anderson and Fulton, we obtain new Pfaffian formulas for these polynomials in the vexillary case. We also give a geometric interpretation of the involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and the author: they represent classes of involution graph Schubert varieties in isotropic Grassmannians.

In recent work, the authors used an order lowering operator $\nabla$, introduced by Stanley, to prove the strong Sperner property for the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Hamaker, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt interpreted $\nabla$ as a differential operator on Schubert polynomials and used this to prove a new identity for Schubert polynomials and a determinant conjecture of Stanley. In this paper we study a raising operator $Δ$ for the \emph{strong} Bruhat order, which is in many ways dual to $\nabla$. We prove a Schubert identity dual to that of Hamaker et al. and derive formulas for counting weighted paths in the Hasse diagrams of the strong order which agree with path counting formulas for the weak order. We also show that powers of $\nabla$ and $Δ$ have the same Smith normal forms, which we describe explicitly, answering a question of Stanley.

We study the action of a differential operator on Schubert polynomials. Using this action, we first give a short new proof of an identity of I. Macdonald (1991). We then prove a determinant conjecture of R. Stanley (2017). This conjecture implies the (strong) Sperner property for the weak order on the symmetric group, a property recently established by C. Gaetz and Y. Gao (2018).

The nonvanishing problem asks if a coefficient of a polynomial is nonzero. Many families of polynomials in algebraic combinatorics admit combinatorial counting rules and simultaneously enjoy having saturated Newton polytopes (SNP). Thereby, in amenable cases, nonvanishing is in the complexity class $NP\cap coNP$ of problems with "good characterizations". This suggests a new algebraic combinatorics viewpoint on complexity theory.
This report discusses the case of Schubert polynomials. These form a basis of all polynomials and appear in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds. We give a tableau criterion for nonvanishing, from which we deduce the first polynomial time algorithm. These results are obtained from new characterizations of the Schubitope, a generalization of the permutahedron defined for any subset of the n x n grid, together with a theorem of A. Fink, K. Mészáros, and A. St. Dizier, which proved a conjecture of C. Monical, N. Tokcan, and the third author.

Hessenberg varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by a linear operator $X$ and a nondecreasing function $h$. The family of Hessenberg varieties for regular $X$ is particularly important: they are used in quantum cohomology, in combinatorial and geometric representation theory, in Schubert calculus and affine Schubert calculus. We show that the classes of a regular Hessenberg variety in the cohomology and $K$-theory of the flag variety are given by making certain substitutions in the Schubert polynomial (respectively Grothendieck polynomial) for a permutation that depends only on $h$. Our formula and our methods are different from a recent result of Abe, Fujita, and Zeng that gives the class of a regular Hessenberg variety with more restrictions on $h$ than here.
Tower Diagrams and Pieri's Rule
We introduce an algorithm to describe Pieri's Rule for multiplication of Schubert polynomials. The algorithm uses tower diagrams introduced by the authors and another new algorithm that describes Monk's Rule. Our result is different from the well-known descriptions (and proofs) of the rule by Bergeron-Billey and Kogan-Kumar and uses Sottile's version of Pieri's Rule.

We study the back stable Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. Our main results are: 1) a formula for back stable (double) Schubert classes expressing them in terms of a symmetric function part and a finite part; 2) a novel definition of double and triple Stanley symmetric functions; 3) a proof of the positivity of double Edelman-Greene coefficients generalizing the results of Edelman-Greene and Lascoux-Schutzenberger; 4) the definition of a new class of bumpless pipedreams, giving new formulae for double Schubert polynomials, back stable double Schubert polynomials, and a new form of the Edelman-Greene insertion algorithm; 5) the construction of the Peterson subalgebra of the infinite nilHecke algebra, extending work of Peterson in the affine case; 6) equivariant Pieri rules for the homology of the infinite Grassmannian; 7) homology divided difference operators that create the equivariant homology Schubert classes of the infinite Grassmannian.

Denote by $u(n)$ the largest principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial: $
u(n) := \max_{w \in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1) $ Stanley conjectured in [arXiv:1704.00851] that there is a limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \, \frac{1}{n^2} \log u(n), $ and asked for a limiting description of permutations achieving the maximum $u(n)$. Merzon and Smirnov conjectured in [arXiv:1410.6857] that this maximum is achieved on layered permutations. We resolve both Stanley's problems restricted to layered permutations.

A Demazure crystal is the basis at $q=0$ of a Demazure module. Demazure crystals play an important role in Schubert calculus because the character of a Demazure crystal in type A is identical to a key polynomial, which is closely related to Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we study tensor products of Demazure crystals. Each connected component of a tensor product of Demazure crystals need not be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for every connected component of a tensor product to be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. Also, we obtain the explicit formula for connected components. As applications, we study the positivity for structure constants of products of key polynomials, and we obtain an equation of crystals, which is an analog of the Leibniz rule for Demazure operators.

In this paper we study a relation between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety and Schubert polynomials. To describe an explicit presentation of the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, polynomials $f_{i,j}$ were introduced by Abe-Harada-Horiguchi-Masuda. We show that every polynomial $f_{i,j}$ is an alternating sum of certain Schubert polynomials.
Kohnert polynomials

We associate a polynomial to any diagram of unit cells in the first quadrant of the plane using Kohnert's algorithm for moving cells down. In this way, for every weak composition one can choose a cell diagram with corresponding row-counts, with each choice giving rise to a combinatorially-defined basis of polynomials. These Kohnert bases provide a simultaneous generalization of Schubert polynomials and Demazure characters for the general linear group. Using the monomial and fundamental slide bases defined earlier by the authors, we show that Kohnert polynomials stabilize to quasisymmetric functions that are nonnegative on the fundamental basis for quasisymmetric functions. For initial applications, we define and study two new Kohnert bases. The elements of one basis are conjecturally Schubert-positive and stabilize to the skew-Schur functions; the elements of the other basis stabilize to a new basis of quasisymmetric functions that contains the Schur functions.
A flag variety for the Delta Conjecture

The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson predicts the monomial expansion of the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$, where $k \leq n$ are positive integers and $Δ'_{e_{k-1}}$ is a Macdonald eigenoperator. When $k = n$, the specialization $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$ is the Frobenius image of the graded $S_n$-module afforded by the cohomology ring of the {\em flag variety} consisting of complete flags in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We define and study a variety $X_{n,k}$ which carries an action of $S_n$ whose cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ has Frobenius image given by $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$, up to a minor twist. The variety $X_{n,k}$ has a cellular decomposition with cells $C_w$ indexed by length $n$ words $w = w_1 \dots w_n$ in the alphabet $\{1, 2, \dots, k\}$ in which each letter appears at least once. When $k = n$, the variety $X_{n,k}$ is homotopy equivalent to the flag variety. We give a presentation for the cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ as a quotient of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ and describe polynomial representatives for the classes $[ \overline{C}_w]$ of the closures of the cells $C_w$; these representatives generalize the classical Schubert polynomials.

We describe the torus-equivariant cohomology of weighted partial flag orbifolds ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$ of type $A$. We establish counterparts of several results known for the partial flag variety that collectively constitute what we refer to as ``Schubert Calculus on ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$''. For the weighed Schubert classes in ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$, we give the Chevalley's formula. In addition, we define the weighted analogue of double Schubert polynomials and give the corresponding Chevalley--Monk's formula.
