Fence Complexes and Toric Degenerations of Positroid Varieties
We associate to each positroid variety in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ a polyhedral complex, which we call a fence complex. Fence complexes consist of unions of faces of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $P_{k,n}$ associated to a fundamental weight $ω_k$. We show that these fence complexes are homeomorphic to closed balls. Furthermore, they endow the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope with the structure of a regular CW complex, giving a polyhedral complex presentation of the regular CW complex structure on $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)_{\geq 0}$. We also show that the Ehrhart polynomial of a fence complex equals the Hilbert polynomial of the associated positroid variety. We prove that under the Sturmfels-Gonciulea-Lakshmibai degeneration of $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ to the toric variety of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope, positroid varieties degenerate to the reduced union of toric varieties corresponding to their fence complexes. As an application, we classify when positroid varieties contained inside hook Schubert varieties are arithmetically Gorenstein. We also derive a recursive character formula for cyclic Demazure modules, which we show is equivalent to a formula of Almousa, Gao and Huang.
Polyhedral models for K-theory of toric and flag varieties
In 1992, Pukhlikov and Khovanskii provided a description of the cohomology ring of toric variety as a quotient of the ring of differential operators on spaces of virtual polytopes. Later Kaveh generalized this construction to the case of cohomology rings for full flag varieties. In this paper we extend Pukhlikov-Khovanskii type presentation to the case of K-theory of toric and flag varieties. First, we study the Frobenius algebras obtained as quotients of the group algebra of free abelian group (possibly of infinite rank). Then we apply this construction to define a K-ring associated to a linear family of (virtual) polytopes. We study in detail two examples of such families: the family of integer (virtual) polytopes with a fixed normal fan and the family of (virtual) Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes. We show that the K-theory of toric and flag varieties can be realized as K-rings of the above families and use this to get natural set of relations in the above K-rings. Further, we describe the classes of structure sheaves of toric orbit closures and Schubert varieties in type A flag varieties. Finally, we show that our results also hold true in T-equivariant setting.
Ideals defining components of two-row Springer fibers
Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety parameterized by nilpotent matrices. They are central objects of study in geometry representation theory. This paper focuses on two-row Springer fibers, those corresponding to nilpotent matrices with two Jordan blocks. Irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers are in bijection with two-row standard Young tableaux and also with noncrossing matchings.
Inspired by the combinatorial commutative algebra of matrix Schubert varieties, we define a polynomial ideal for each noncrossing matching and prove that these ideals define the corresponding components of the Springer fiber. Our proofs leverage geometric descriptions of Springer fibers established by Fung, Stroppel--Webster, Fresse, and Goldwasser--Nadeem--Sun--Tymoczko. Using these ideals to compute examples, we give two conjectural formulas for the cohomology class of each component of a two-row Springer fiber. We apply commutative algebra techniques to prove these conjectures for a specific family of two-row tableaux.
Equivariant Quantum Cohomology of Grassmannians via the Clifford algebra
We construct an explicit equivariant quantum Satake map for Grassmannians, which enables us to express their torus-equivariant quantum cohomology in terms of that of projective space. We then consider the exterior algebra of the latter, which admits a canonical identification with a Clifford algebra. We describe the resulting action in several complementary ways: first, from a geometric perspective via push-pull maps, and second, in terms of the shuffle product, which also arises in the simplest cohomological Hall algebra associated with the $A_1$-quiver. Exploiting the Clifford algebra structure, we derive new recurrence relations among equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants, yielding a new method for their computation in terms of Wick's Theorem. As an application, we provide combinatorial proofs of Graham positivity for both equivariant quantum Pieri rules, and in one case extend these results to quantum triple Schubert calculus.
Motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells and the connective formal group law
We use the connective formal group law to define a one-parameter ($β$-)deformation of the motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells in the $d$-step flag variety. This $β$-deformation specializes to the motivic Segre classes of Schubert cells when $β=1$ and to the Segre-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells when $β=0$. We define rational function representatives for the $β$-deformed classes in the $d=1$ case in terms of a solvable lattice model, and we prove a combinatorial formula for the structure constants in the $β$-deformed basis in the $d=1$ case using Knutson-Tao puzzles. The proof of the puzzle formula involves intertwiners for representations of the multi-parameter quantum group of type $\widehat{a}_2$. We show that our $β$-deformations can be viewed as quotients of canonical elements in a quotient of the equivariant algebraic cobordism ring of the cotangent bundle of the flag variety by proving that the canonical elements satisfy a GKM type condition.
Random Permutations from Bott-Samelson Varieties
Motivated by a recent random pipe dream model, we study a family of probability distributions on \(S_n\) arising from Bott--Samelson varieties over finite fields. More precisely, for a word \(R\), we consider the Bott--Samelson map \(π_R:\mathrm{BS}^R\to \mathcal{F}\ell_n\) and define a distribution \(\mathbb{P}_{R,q}\) by counting the \(\mathbb{F}_q\)-points in the inverse images of Schubert cells. For a suitable choice of parameters \(p_1=q/(1+q)\) and \(p_2=1/q\), this construction recovers a special case of the random pipe dream distribution. The main problem considered in this note is to determine which combinatorial properties of a reduced word are detected by the distribution \(\mathbb{P}_{R,q}\). We prove the stronger statement that, for arbitrary reduced words \(R_1,R_2\), the equality \(\mathbb{P}_{R_1,q}=\mathbb{P}_{R_2,q}\) as functions of \(q\) holds if and only if \(R_1\) and \(R_2\) lie in the same commutation class. In particular, equality of distributions already forces the two words to represent the same permutation. The proof combines the Bott--Samelson interpretation with Demazure products, commutation-class invariants, and Hecke-algebraic arguments.
Constructing Maximal Bumpless Pipedreams for Double Grothendieck Polynomials
Pipedreams and bumpless pipedreams are two combinatorial models that compute double Grothendieck polynomials. While studying matrix Schubert varieties, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt defined a permutation statistic$\mathsf{rajcode}(\cdot)$ that captures the leading monomial of the top-degree components of a Grothendieck polynomial. Combinatorially, their result implies that there exists a unique pipedream (or bumpless pipedream) with row weight $\mathsf{rajcode}(w)$ and column weight $\mathsf{rajcode}(w^{-1})$. A construction of such a pipedream was subsequently given by Chou and Yu. In this paper, we resolve the bumpless pipedream version of this problem by providing an explicit algorithm.
Ehrhart positivity for lattice path matroids
We prove that all lattice path matroids are Ehrhart positive. This unifies and generalizes numerous results on the Ehrhart positivity of matroids developed over the last two decades. We rely on our previous work on the positivity of order polynomials of fences. Our main result supports the conjecture by Ferroni, Jochemko, and Schröter (2022) on the Ehrhart positivity of positroids. Furthermore, our main result implies that all Schubert matroids are Ehrhart positive, which thus settles a conjecture by Fan and Li (2024), and supports a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan, and Yong (2019) on the Ehrhart positivity of Schubitopes.
Grove polynomials and $K$-theoretic quasisymmetry
We define the grove polynomials, a set-valued extension of forest polynomials. We show that they are $K$-theoretically dual to the quasisymmetric Schubert cells which pave the quasisymmetric flag variety, in the same way that Grothendieck polynomials are dual to Schubert cells in the complete flag variety. As a consequence, the finite truncations of the multi-fundamental quasisymmetric functions of Lam-Pylyavskyy acquire a geometric interpretation as $K$-theoretic representatives of quasisymmetric Schubert cells.
The polytope of all matroids in ranks 2 and 3
We give explicit recursive constructions for the polytope of all matroids $Ω_{r,n}$ in ranks 2 and 3 for all ground set sizes. This polytope was introduced in recent work by Ferroni and Fink as a tool for checking positivity conjectures for valuative invariants. We supplement our theoretical construction by an implementation, which allows for the computation of $Ω_{2,n}$ for $n\leq 33$ and $Ω_{3,n}$ for $n\leq 10$. Further, we compute Schubert expansions for all isomorphism classes of matroids of rank $2$ up to $n = 80$, and for rank $3$ up to $n = 11$.
Lattice-free Schubitopes
In this paper, we provide a simple criterion for the Schubitope $\mathcal{S}_{D}$ associated to a diagram $D$ to be lattice-free. We further show that $\mathcal{S}_{D}$ is lattice-free if and only if its Ehrhart polynomial is equal to the product of Ehrhart polynomials of the Schubert matroid polytopes corresponding to each column of $D$. As applications, we obtain that the Newton polytopes of the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ and the Grothendieck polynomial $\mathfrak{G}_w(x)$ are lattice-free if and only if $w$ avoids the patterns 1423, 1432, 13254, and confirm several conjectures by Mészáros, Setiabrata, and St.Dizier on the support of Grothendieck polynomials for this class of permutations.
Principal specializations of Grothendieck polynomials
Motivated by Stanley's ``Schubert shenanigans'' paper, commendable attempts have been made to understand the principal specializations of Schubert or Grothendieck polynomials. In this paper, we prove that when a permutation $w$ does not contain the $1423$ pattern, the principal specialization of the corresponding $β$-Grothendieck polynomial can be expressed nonnegatively in terms of the occurrences of patterns in $w$. Using an inverse conservation principle, we further obtain the nonnegativity expansion for permutations avoiding the $1342$ pattern. Our results partially resolve conjectures raised respectively by Gao (independently observed by Gaetz), Meśzáros--Tanjaya, and Dennin. The proofs are achieved based upon a reduction algorithm performing on the classic pipe dream model of $β$-Grothendieck polynomials.
Toric Schubert Varieties in Partial Flag Varieties
In this article, we investigate the toric Schubert varieties in partial flag varieties $G/P$ for a connected semisimple algebraic group $G$. Using Deodhar's decomposition of Richardson varieties and the work of Pasquier, we give an explicit description of the fan of a toric Schubert variety, leading to a combinatorial model for its cones. As an application, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for smoothness of toric Schubert varieties in terms of the Cartan integers associated to a reduced expression. Furthermore, we prove that for a Coxeter-type element $w \in W^P$, the interval $[e,w]_{W^P}$ is a supersolvable join-distributive lattice. Finally, we apply these results to the study of spherical and horospherical Schubert varieties, providing a combinatorial method for checking the smoothness via the associated toric Schubert varieties.
Stretched Schubert coefficients are eventually quasi-polynomial
For a permutation $u\in S_n$, let $N\ast u\in S_{Nn}$ be the permutation with scaled Lehmer code. For given $u,v,w\in S_n$ and integer $N$, the stretched Schubert coefficients are defined as $f_{u,v,w}(N):=c_{N*u,N*v}^{N*w}$. Our main result is that the function $f_{u,v,w}(N)$ is eventually quasi-polynomial. This proves Kirillov's conjecture (2004), that the generating function for the sequence $\{f_{u,v,w}(N)\}$ is rational.
For the proof, we use combinatorics of pipe dreams to show that Schubert coefficients are given as an alternating sum of the numbers of integer points in certain polytopes. These polytopes behave nicely under stretching, and we use Ehrhart theory to obtain the result. As a consequence of the proof, we also present new counterexamples to the saturation conjecture for Schubert coefficients, and give computational applications.
Formalizing $A_1^{(1)}$ Curve Neighborhoods in Lean 4
Combinatorial curve neighborhoods are somewhat foundational when setting up the quantum Schubert calculus for affine flag manifolds. In the specific case of type $A_1^{(1)}$, you can encode these neighborhoods entirely within the moment graph of the infinite dihedral group $D_\infty$. Building on the framework developed by Mihalcea and Norton, this paper presents a complete, axiom-free formalization of these combinatorial curve neighborhoods in Lean 4. Rather than just wrapping mathematical statements, we formalized $D_\infty$ directly as a Coxeter system to explicitly compute length functions and degree maps. Reachable sets are defined through edge chains bounded by specific degrees, and we ultimately characterize the curve neighborhood by the maximal vertices inside these sets. The core effort here lies in formally verifying the explicit combinatorial formulas for curve neighborhoods of arbitrary elements. Interestingly, by restricting our search space to finite sets, we also managed to extract a fully computable version of these neighborhoods.
Tetrahedral $L$-operators, tensor Schur polynomials and $q$-deformed loop elementary symmetric functions
We study three-dimensional partition functions constructed from the tetrahedral $L$-operator introduced and studied by Bazhanov-Sergeev and Kuniba-Maruyama-Okado. First, we explore the $q=0$ case, extending the authors' previous results and giving applications by a further analysis on the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebra. We introduce a class of partition functions which can be expressed as the tensor Schur polynomials, a class of products of Schur polynomials. As an application, we derive the shuffle formula for the Schur polynomials which is geometrically the pushforward formula by Joźefiak-Pragacz-Lascoux. We also give a derivation and a unification of the Gustafson-Milne and Feh{é}r--N{é}methi--Rim{á}nyi identities, and introduce a family of Laurent polynomials using divided difference operators which imitates the Schubert polynomials from the perspective of our study. We also present an application to the steady state of the multispecies totally asymmetric simple exclusion process. Second, we investigate several classes of partition functions for the generic $q$ case, and determine the explicit forms as deformations of the elementary symmetric functions. One of them can be regarded as (an extension of) a $q$-deformed loop elementary symmetric functions.
The record statistic and forward stability of Schubert products
We initiate a probabilistic study of forward stability for products of Schubert polynomials through the record statistic (left-to-right maxima) of permutations. Building on the explicit record formula for forward stability obtained by Hardt and Wallach, we study random pairs of permutations drawn from three natural families: uniform permutations, Grassmannian permutations, and Boolean permutations. For each family, we determine record probabilities and use them to analyze the asymptotic behavior of forward stability. For uniform and Grassmannian permutations, we obtain asymptotics for the mean together with limiting distribution results. For Boolean permutations, we prove linear-order growth of the mean, and our analysis also produces an explicit time-inhomogeneous Markov chain that yields an exact linear-time uniform sampler. Beyond these cases, we prove that the record-set statistic is equidistributed on the avoidance classes of $132$ and $231$, and consequently the corresponding forward stability distributions coincide. We conclude with conjectures for numerous further permutation classes and a conjectural recursive criterion for when two avoidance classes have the same record-set distribution.
Tropical matroid Schubert varieties and the graded Möbius algebra
We introduce tropical matroid Schubert varieties, a tropical analogue of arrangement Schubert varieties associated with realisable matroids. We prove that the tropical cohomology ring of the tropical matroid Schubert variety associated to any matroid $M$ is isomorphic to the graded Möbius algebra $\operatorname{B}^\bullet(M)$. This yields a geometric model for $\operatorname{B}^\bullet(M)$, extending the geometric setting of arrangement Schubert varieties to arbitrary matroids, including non-realisable ones.
Computation and sampling for Schubert specializations
We present computational results on principal specializations $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ of Schubert polynomials, which count reduced pipe dreams and reduced bumpless pipe dreams (RBPD). We find the first counterexample, at $n=17$, to the Merzon-Smirnov conjecture (arXiv:1410.6857) that the maximum of $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ over $S_n$ is attained at a layered permutation. The simulations suggest that $\lim_{n \to \infty} \log(\max_{w\in S_n}\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n))/n^2$ equals the maximal layered permutations' constant from Morales-Pak-Panova (arXiv:1805.04341). We also explore the random permutation drawn from the distribution proportional to $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$, revealing permuton-like asymptotics similar to those for Grothendieck polynomials by Morales-Panova-Petrov-Yeliussizov (arXiv:2407.21653).
We implement and compare three recurrences for $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$: the descent formula (Macdonald), transition formula (Lascoux--Schutzenberger), and cotransition formula (Knutson). For sampling uniformly random RBPDs (whose count is $\sum_{w\in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$), we show that reducedness breaks the sublattice property of the ASM lattice, preventing monotone CFTP and causing false coalescence. We develop an efficient MCMC sampler with macroscopic "droop" updates for connectivity and fast mixing. Our code computes $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ up to $n\sim 20$ and samples random RBPDs up to $n\sim 60$ on a personal computer ($n\sim 100$ on a cluster).
Towards the characterization of minimum weight codewords of Schubert codes
A conjectural formula for the minimum weight of Schubert codes was conjectured by Ghorpade in 2000. This was established by Xiang in 2008. In 2018, Ghorpade and Singh provided a new proof of this conjecture. Moreover, they also conjectured that the minimum weight codewords of the Schubert codes $C_\a (\ell, m)$ are given by the so-called \emph{Schubert decomposable codewords}. We prove the validity of the conjecture for all Schubert varieties $Ω_{\a}(\ell, V_m)$ for all but finitely many values of $q$.
