Graded Ehrhart Theory of Unimodular Zonotopes
Graded Ehrhart theory is a new $q$-analogue of Ehrhart theory based on the orbit harmonics method. We study the graded Ehrhart theory of unimodular zonotopes from a matroid-theoretic perspective. Generalizing a result of Stanley (1991), we prove that the graded lattice point count of a unimodular zonotope is a $q$-evaluation of its Tutte polynomial. We conclude that the graded Ehrhart series of a unimodular zonotope is rational and obeys graded Ehrhart--Macdonald reciprocity. In an algebraic direction, we prove that the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope is a coordinate ring of its associated arrangement Schubert variety. Using the geometry of arrangement Schubert varieties, we prove that the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope is finitely generated and Cohen--Macaulay. We also give an explicit presentation of the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope in terms of generators and relations. We conclude by classifying which unimodular zonotopes have Gorenstein harmonic algebras. Our work answers, in the special case of unimodular zonotopes, two conjectures of Reiner and Rhoades (2024).
Motivic Chern Classes of Open Projected Richardson Varieties and of Affine Schubert Cells
The open projected Richardson varieties are images of the open Richardson varieties of the complete flag variety under the canonical projection to the partial flag variety. Our main result compares the Segre motivic Chern (SMC) classes of the open projected Richardson varieties with those of the affine Schubert cells by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. The main method is the recursive relation determined by the Demazure--Lusztig operators. As another application of this recursive relation, we relate the localization of the SMC classes to the twisted Kazhdan--Lusztig R-polynomials. In the case of Grassmannians, the open projected Richardson varieties are known as the open positroid varieties. We give a combinatorial formula for the SMC classes of these varieties.
Tilted Richardson Varieties
The study of the flag variety $\mathrm{Fl}_n$ and its subvarieties, including Schubert and Richardson varieties, plays a fundamental role in algebraic geometry and algebraic combinatorics. In this paper, we introduce and develop the theory of tilted Richardson varieties $\mathrm{T}_{u,v}$, a new family of subvarieties of the flag variety that provides a geometric framework for the quantum Bruhat graphs. These varieties are defined for all pairs of permutations $u$ and $v$, extending the classical Richardson varieties in the case where $u\leq v$ in the Bruhat order. We establish their fundamental geometric properties, proving irreducibility and providing explicit dimension formulas. Moreover, we show that they have a well-defined stratification indexed by tilted Bruhat intervals, a generalization of classical Bruhat intervals previously introduced by Brenti, Fomin, and Postnikov. Additionally, we introduce a tilted generalization of the classical Deodhar decomposition of Richardson varieties, which leads to a combinatorial formula for tilted Kazhdan--Lusztig R-polynomials, a notion that arises naturally in our framework.
We further develop a theory of total positivity for tilted Richardson varieties. In particular, we define and study the totally nonnegative parts of tilted Richardson varieties, proving they form a CW complex. This generalizes earlier results on the totally nonnegative flag variety and answers Björner's questions regarding geometric realizations of tilted Bruhat intervals.
Finally, we establish explicit connections between tilted Richardson varieties and quantum Schubert calculus. Specifically, we prove that $\mathrm{T}_{u,v}$ coincides with minimal-degree two-point curve neighborhoods. As a result, we compute their cohomology classes and derive new relationships among Gromov--Witten invariants of the flag variety.
Colored interlacing triangles and Genocchi medians
Colored interlacing triangles, introduced by Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler (2024), provide the combinatorial framework for the Central Limit Theorem for probability measures arising from the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon (LLT) polynomials. Colored interlacing triangles depend on two key parameters: the number of colors $n$ and the depth of the triangle $N$. Recent work of Gaetz-Gao (2025) connects these objects to Schubert calculus and resolves the enumeration for $n=3$ and arbitrary depth $N$. However, the enumerative behavior for general $n$ has remained open.
In this paper, we analyze the complementary regime: fixed depth $N=2$ and arbitrary number of colors $n$. We prove that in this setting, colored interlacing triangles are in bijection with Dumont derangements, identifying their enumeration with the Genocchi medians. This connects the probabilistic model to a rich hierarchy of classical combinatorial objects.
Furthermore, we introduce a $q$-deformation of this enumeration arising naturally from the LLT transition energy. This yields new $q$-analogs of the Genocchi medians. Finally, we present computational results and sampling algorithms for colored interlacing triangles with higher $N$ or $n$, which suggests the limits of combinatorial tractability in the $(N,n)$ parameter space.
Forest Polynomials and Pattern Avoidance
Forest polynomials, recently introduced by Nadeau and Tewari, can be thought of as a quasisymmetric analogue for Schubert polynomials. They have already been shown to exhibit interesting interactions with Schubert polynomials; for example, Schubert polynomials decompose positively into forest polynomials. We further describe this relationship by showing that a Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ is a forest polynomial exactly when $w$ avoids a set of $6$ patterns. This result adds to the long list of properties of Schubert polynomials that are controlled by pattern avoidance.
Saturation property fails for Schubert coefficients
The saturation property for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients was established by Knutson and Tao in 1999. In 2004, Kirillov conjectured that the saturation property extends to Schubert coefficients. We disprove this conjecture in a strong form, by showing that it fails for a large family of instances. We also refute the saturation property for Schubert coefficients under bit scaling and discuss computational complexity implications.
Antidiagonal Initial Complexes of Infinite Matrix Schubert Varieties are Cohen-Macaulay
We show that, under certain constraints, the Stanley-Reisner ring of an infinite simplicial complex is Cohen-Macaulay in the sense of ideals and weak Bourbaki unmixed. We apply this result to prove the wanted claim -- that initial complexes of matrix Schubert varieties corresponding to infinite permutations in $S_{\infty}$ with respect to an antidiagonal term order are Cohen-Macaulay (in the same sense), giving rise to new examples of non-Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay rings.
The quantum k-Bruhat order
In this paper, we extend the study of the quantum $k$-Bruhat order initiated in the work of Benedetti, Bergeron, Colmenarejo, Saliola, and Sottile concerning the quantum Murnaghan-Nakayama rule. Specifically, identifying maximal chains in intervals of the quantum $k$-Bruhat order with sequences of transpositions, we investigate a naturally associated free monoid $F_n^{\mathbf{q}}$ with an action on a $q$-extension of $S_n$, denoted $S_n[\mathbf{q}]$, which encodes the chain structure of the quantum $k$-Bruhat order. Aside from numerous structural results, our main contribution is an identification of a large family of equivalences satisfied by the elements of $F_n^{\mathbf{q}}$ as operators on $S_n[\mathbf{q}]$. In fact, we conjecture that our list of equivalences is complete. As a consequence of the quantum Monk's rule, a complete understanding of such equivalences can be used to gain information about the multiplicative structure of quantum Schubert polynomials.
Permutations with only reduced co-BPDs
Bumpless pipe dreams (BPDs) are combinatorial objects used in the study of Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials. Weigandt recently introduced a co-BPD object associated to each BPD and used them to give an analogue to the change of bases formulas of Lenart and Lascoux between these polynomials. She posed the problem of characterizing the set of permutations whose BPDs have only reduced co-BPDs. We give a pattern-avoidance characterization for these permutations using a set of seven patterns.
The Grothendieck Group of the Variety of Spanning Line Configurations
We study the Grothendieck group of the variety $X_{n,k}$ of spanning line configurations introduced by Pawlowski--Rhoades [arXiv:1711.08301] as a geometric model for the generalized coinvariant algebra $R_{n,k}$. Our first result is a localization statement in $K$-theory for the complements of cell closures in smooth cellular varieties. Combining with the Fulton--Lascoux degeneracy loci formula, we prove that $K_0(X_{n,k})$ is canonically isomorphic to $R_{n,k}$, extending classical isomorphisms for the flag variety. We next identify the classes of the Pawlowski--Rhoades varieties with Grothendieck polynomials associated to words $w \in [k]^n$. Motivated by this identification, we develop models of classical and bumpless pipe dreams for words. We show that Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of words are monomial-weight generating functions for these pipe dreams, extending the classical story from permutations to words and ordered set partitions.
Brion atoms for classical types
Let $G$ be a classical group defined over the complex numbers with a Borel subgroup $B$. Choose a holomorphic involution of $G$ and let $K$ be its set of fixed points. The group $K$ acts on the flag variety $G/B$ with finitely many orbits and Brion has derived a general formula for the cohomology classes of the corresponding orbit closures as linear combinations of Schubert classes. This article provide a uniform description of the sets of Weyl group elements (which we refer to as Brion atoms) indexing the terms in this formula. This builds on prior work addressing types A, B, and C. The main novelty of our results is a thorough treatment of type D. As one application, we introduce a notion of involution Schubert polynomials for all classical types and present several conjectures related to these objects.
Classical double Grothendieck transitions
Kirillov and Naruse have constructed double Grothendieck polynomials to represent the equivariant K-theory classes of Schubert varieties in the complete flag manifolds of types B, C, and D. We derive a recursive formula for these polynomials, extending certain K-theoretic transition equations known in type A to all classical types. As an application, we obtain an identity that expands the K-Stanley symmetric functions in types B, C, and D into positive linear combinations of K-theoretic Schur P- and Q-functions. We also resolve several positivity conjectures related to the skew generalizations of the latter functions.
A Local Characterization of Unions of Demazure Crystals
We characterize subsets of highest weight $\mathfrak{g}$-crystals that arise as unions of Demazure crystals, for any symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We provide a local characterization for these subsets and prove they admit disjoint decompositions into Demazure atoms. As a consequence, we give a new characterization for when a subset of a highest weight crystal is a Demazure crystal as well as a crystal-theoretic proof that any Polo module admits a relative Schubert filtration.
Billey-Postnikov posets, rationally smooth Schubert varieties, and Poincaré duality
Billey-Postnikov (BP) decompositions govern when Schubert varieties $X(w)$ decompose as bundles of smaller Schubert varieties. We further develop the theory of BP decompositions and show that, in finite type, they can be recognized by pattern conditions and are indexed by the order ideals of a poset $\mathsf{bp}(w)$ that we introduce; we conjecture that this holds in any Coxeter group. We then apply BP decompositions to show that, when $X(w)$ is rationally smooth and $W$ simply laced, the Schubert structure constants $c_{uv}^w$ satisfy a triangularity property, yielding a canonical involution on the Schubert cells of $X(w)$ respecting Poincaré duality. We also classify the rationally smooth Bruhat intervals in finite type (other than $E$) which admit generalized Lehmer codes, answering questions and conjectures of Billey-Fan-Losonczy, Bolognini-Sentinelli, and Bishop-Milićević-Thomas. Finally, we show that rationally smooth Schubert varieties in infinite type need not have Grassmannian BP decompositions, disproving conjectures of Richmond-Slofstra and Oh-Richmond.
Unitarity of highest weight Harish-Chandra modules and smoothness of Schubert varieties
Let $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ be a Lie group of Hermitian type, and $L(λ)$ a highest weight Harish-Chandra module of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ with highest weight $λ$. In this article, we exhibit a bijection between the set of connected Dynkin subdiagrams containing the noncompact simple root and the set of unitary highest weight modules $L(-wρ-ρ)$, where $ρ$ is half the sum of positive roots. We find that $L(-wρ-ρ)$ is unitary if and only if the Schubert variety $X(w)$ is smooth. We also give the cardinality of the set of unitary highest weight modules $L(-wρ-ρ)$ for each Kazhdan-Lusztig right cell.
On stationary real matrix Schubert varieties
In this paper, we study when a real matrix Schubert variety is stationary with respect to the first variation. We first show that a necessary condition for its open dense regular part to be a minimal submanifold is that the corresponding partial permutation is vexillary. Among vexillary partial permutations, we establish minimality by a geometric argument when the Rothe diagram is of Grassmannian type and has at most two connected components. We further obtain, as a corollary, the minimality of those varieties that decompose as products of this type. These varieties include all determinantal varieties as well as some new minimal cones.
Asymptotically maximal Schubitopes
We find a layered permutation $w\in S_n$ whose Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak S_w(x_1, \dots, x_n)$ has support of size asymptotically at least $n!/4^n$. This gives precise asymptotics for the growth rate of $β(n):= \max_{w\in S_n}|\mathrm{supp}(\mathfrak S_w)|$. We find a different layered permutation $w\in S_n$ whose Grothendieck polynomial has support of size asymptotically at least $n!/e^{\sqrt{2n} \cdot \ln(n)}$ and obtain more precise asymptotics for the growth rate of $β^{\mathfrak G}(n):=\max_{w\in S_n}|\mathrm{supp}(\mathfrak G_w)|$.
Equivariant homology of the symplectic affine Grassmannian and dual affine Schur $P$-functions
We study the torus-equivariant homology $H_*^T(\mathrm{Gr}_G)$ of the affine Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_G$, where $G=\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ is the symplectic group. This homology admits a natural ring structure and a Schubert basis, giving rise to a well-defined Schubert calculus. We realize $H_*^T(\mathrm{Gr}_G)$ in terms of symmetric functions. Our first main result introduces a new family of symmetric functions, called the \emph{dual affine Schur $P$-functions}, which represent the Schubert classes. These functions are defined through the action of the affine nil-Hecke algebra, and specialize, in the stable limit as $n\to \infty$, to the dual factorial $P$-functions of Nakagawa and Naruse. Our second main result gives a precise comparison between this symmetric function model and the geometric construction of $H_*^T (\mathrm{Gr}_G)$ due to Ginzburg and Peterson, which identifies it with a coordinate ring of a centralizer family in the Langlands dual group.
Varieties of Lines in 3-Space
We consider configurations of lines in 3-space with incidences prescribed by a graph. This defines a subvariety in a product of Grassmannians. Leveraging a connection with rigidity theory in the plane, for any graph, we determine the dimension of the incidence variety and characterize when it is irreducible or a complete intersection. We study its multidegree and the family of Schubert problems it encodes. Our spanning-tree coordinates enable efficient symbolic computations. We also provide numerical irreducible decompositions for incidence varieties with up to eight lines. These constructions with lines play a key role in the Landau analysis of scattering amplitudes in particle physics.
Schubert Polynomials and Elementary Symmetric Products
We study the factorization of Schubert polynomials into elementary symmetric polynomials. We conjecture that this occurs when the permutation corresponding to the Schubert polynomial does not contain the patterns $1432$, $1423$, $4132$, and $3142$. We prove one direction of this and provide progress towards the second direction, including obstructions arising from permutations with a rectangular array of crosses in their bottom pipe dream. This characterization helps us identify new ties between elementary symmetric polynomials and Schubert polynomials. It contributes to the broader understanding of pattern avoidance phenomena in algebraic combinatorics.
