On Schur p-groups of odd order
Published in J. Algebra Appl., 16, 1750045 (2017) [29 pages] • View PublicationBIB
A finite group $G$ is called a Schur group if any $S$-ring over $G$ is associated in a natural way with a subgroup of $Sym(G)$ that contains all right translations. We prove that the groups $\mathbb{Z}_3\times \mathbb{Z}_{3^n}$, where $n\geq 1$, are Schur. Modulo previously obtained results, it follows that every noncyclic Schur $p$-group, where $p$ is an odd prime, is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_3\times \mathbb{Z}_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_3$ or $\mathbb{Z}_3\times \mathbb{Z}_{3^n}$, $n\geq 1$ .

Structure and automorphisms of primitive coherent configurations
Coherent configurations (CCs) are highly regular colorings of the set of ordered pairs of a "vertex set"; each color represents a "constituent digraph." CCs arise in the study of permutation groups, combinatorial structures such as partially balanced designs, and the analysis of algorithms; their history goes back to Schur in the 1930s. A CC is primitive (PCC) if all its constituent digraphs are connected. We address the problem of classifying PCCs with large automorphism groups. This project was started in Babai's 1981 paper in which he showed that only the trivial PCC admits more than $\exp(\tilde{O}(n^{1/2}))$ automorphisms. (Here, $n$ is the number of vertices and the $\tilde{O}$ hides polylogarithmic factors.) In the present paper we classify all PCCs with more than $\exp(\tilde{O}(n^{1/3}))$ automorphisms, making the first progress on Babai's conjectured classification of all PCCs with more than $\exp(n^ε)$ automorphisms. A corollary to Babai's 1981 result solved a then 100-year-old problem on primitive but not doubly transitive permutation groups, giving an $\exp(\tilde{O}(n^{1/2}))$ bound on their order. In a similar vein, our result implies an $\exp(\tilde{O}(n^{1/3}))$ upper bound on the order of such groups, with known exceptions. This improvement of Babai's result was previously known only through the Classification of Finite Simple Groups (Cameron, 1981), while our proof, like Babai's, is elementary and almost purely combinatorial. Our analysis relies on a new combinatorial structure theory we develop for PCCs. In particular, we demonstrate the presence of "asymptotically uniform clique geometries" on PCCs in a certain range of the parameters.

A new generalization of Hermite's reciprocity law
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a partition $λ$ of $n$, the {\it Schur functor} $\mathbb{S}_λ$ associates to any complex vector space $V$, a subspace $\mathbb{S}_λ(V)$ of $V^{\otimes n}$. Hermite's reciprocity law, in terms of the Schur functor, states that $ \mathbb{S}_{(p)}\left(\mathbb{S}_{(q)}(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)\simeq \mathbb{S}_{(q)}\left(\mathbb{S}_{(p)}(\mathbb{C}^2)\right). $ We extend this identity to many other identities of the type $\mathbb{S}_λ\left(\mathbb{S}_δ(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)\simeq \mathbb{S}_μ\left(\mathbb{S}_ε(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)$.

Kronecker coefficients and noncommutative super Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The theory of noncommutative Schur functions can be used to obtain positive combinatorial formulae for the Schur expansion of various classes of symmetric functions, as shown by Fomin and Greene. We develop a theory of noncommutative super Schur functions and use it to prove a positive combinatorial rule for the Kronecker coefficients where one of the partitions is a hook, recovering previous results of the two authors. This method also gives a precise connection between this rule and a heuristic for Kronecker coefficients first investigated by Lascoux.

Noncommutative Schur functions, switchboards, and Schur positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
The machinery of noncommutative Schur functions provides a general tool for obtaining Schur expansions for combinatorially defined symmetric functions. We extend this approach to a wider class of symmetric functions, explore its strengths and limitations, and obtain new results on Schur positivity. We introduce combinatorial gadgets called switchboards, an adaptation of the D graphs of S. Assaf, and show how symmetric functions associated to them (which include LLT, Macdonald, Stanley, and stable Grothendieck polynomials) fit into the noncommutative Schur functions approach. This extends earlier work by T. Lam, and by C. Greene and the second author, and provides new tools for obtaining combinatorial formulas for Schur expansions of LLT polynomials. This paper can be regarded as a "prequel" to (and, partly, a review of) arXiv:1411.3624, arXiv:1411.3646, and arXiv:1510.00644.

A note on corollaries to Tokuyama's Identity for symplectic Schur $Q$-Functions
We present some corollaries to a symplectic primed shifted tableaux version of Tokuyama's identity expressed in terms of other combinatorial constructs, namely generalised $U$-turn alternating sign matrices and strict symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns.

Double posets and the antipode of QSym
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24(2) (2017), #P2.22 (published with minor changes to Section 2 and without ancillary file) • View PublicationBIB
A quasisymmetric function is assigned to every double poset (that is, every finite set endowed with two partial orders) and any weight function on its ground set. This generalizes well-known objects such as monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions, (skew) Schur functions, dual immaculate functions, and quasisymmetric $\left(P, ω\right)$-partition enumerators. We prove a formula for the antipode of this function that holds under certain conditions (which are satisfied when the second order of the double poset is total, but also in some other cases); this restates (in a way that to us seems more natural) a result by Malvenuto and Reutenauer, but our proof is new and self-contained. We generalize it further to an even more comprehensive setting, where a group acts on the double poset by automorphisms.

Refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials and generalized Bender-Knuth involutions
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 23 (3), 2016 • View PublicationBIB
The dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a deformation of the Schur functions, originating in the study of the K-theory of the Grassmannian. We generalize these polynomials by introducing a countable family of additional parameters, and we prove that this generalization still defines symmetric functions. For this fact, we give two self-contained proofs, one of which constructs a family of involutions on the set of reverse plane partitions generalizing the Bender-Knuth involutions on semistandard tableaux, whereas the other classifies the structure of reverse plane partitions with entries 1 and 2.
Commutation and normal ordering for operators on symmetric functions
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de combinatoire, vol.80, article B80d (2019) • Search Publication
We study the commutation relations and normal ordering between families of operators on symmetric functions. These operators can be naturally defined by the operations of multiplication, Kronecker product, and their adjoints. As applications we give a new proof of the skew Littlewood-Richardson rule and prove an identity about the Kronecker product with a skew Schur function.

The Prism tableau model for Schubert polynomials
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 154 (2018), 551-582 • View PublicationBIB
The Schubert polynomials lift the Schur basis of symmetric polynomials into a basis for Z[x1,x2,...]. We suggest the "prism tableau model" for these polynomials. A novel aspect of this alternative to earlier results is that it directly invokes semistandard tableaux; it does so as part of a colored tableau amalgam. In the Grassmannian case, a prism tableau with colors ignored is a semistandard Young tableau. Our arguments are developed from the Groebner geometry of matrix Schubert varieties.

On the Existence of Generalized Parking Spaces for Complex Reflection Groups
Let $W$ be an irreducible finite complex reflection group acting on a complex vector space $V$. For a positive integer $k$, we consider a class function $\varphi_k$ given by $\varphi_k(w) = k^{\dim V^w}$ for $w \in W$, where $V^w$ is the fixed-point subspace of $w$. If $W$ is the symmetric group of $n$ letters and $k=n+1$, then $\varphi_{n+1}$ is the permutation character on (classical) parking functions. In this paper, we give a complete answer to the question when $\varphi_k$ (resp. its $q$-analogue) is the character of a representation (resp. the graded character of a graded representation) of $W$. As a key to the proof in the symmetric group case, we find the greatest common divisors of specialized Schur functions. And we propose a unimodality conjecture of the coefficients of certain quotients of principally specialized Schur functions.

A generalized SXP rule proved by bijections and involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper proves a combinatorial rule expressing the product $s_τ(s_{λ/μ} \circ p_r)$ of a Schur function and the plethysm of a skew Schur function with a power sum symmetric function as an integral linear combination of Schur functions. This generalizes the SXP rule for the plethysm $s_λ\circ p_r$. Each step in the proof uses either an explicit bijection or a sign-reversing involution. The proof is inspired by an earlier proof of the SXP rule due to Remmel and Shimozono, A simple proof of the Littlewood--Richardson rule and applications, Discrete Mathematics 193 (1998) 257--266. The connections with two later combinatorial rules for special cases of this plethysm are discussed. Two open problems are raised. The paper is intended to be readable by non-experts.

From symmetric fundamental expansions to Schur positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider families of quasisymmetric functions with the property that if a symmetric function $f$ is a positive sum of functions in one of these families, then f is necessarily a positive sum of Schur functions. Furthermore, in each of the families studied, we give a combinatorial description of the Schur coefficients of $f$. We organize six such families into a poset, where functions in higher families in the poset are always positive integer sums of functions in each of the lower families. This poset includes the Schur functions, the quasisymmetric Schur functions, the fundamental quasisymmetric generating functions of shifted dual equivalence classes, as well as three new families of functions --- one of which is conjectured to be a basis of the vector space of quasisymmetric functions. Each of the six families is realized as the fundamental quasisymmetric generating functions over the classes of some refinement of dual Knuth equivalence. Thus, we also produce a poset of refinements of dual Knuth equivalence. In doing so, we define quasi-dual equivalence to provide classes that generate quasisymmetric Schur functions.

An extension of MacMahon's Equidistribution Theorem to ordered multiset partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of MacMahon states that inversion number and major index have the same distribution over permutations of a given multiset. In this work we prove a strengthening of this theorem originally conjectured by Haglund. Our result can be seen as an equidistribution theorem over the ordered partitions of a multiset into sets, which we call ordered multiset partitions. Our proof is bijective and involves a new generalization of Carlitz's insertion method. This generalization leads to a new extension of Macdonald polynomials for hook shapes. We use our main theorem to show that these polynomials are symmetric and we give their Schur expansion.

The Smith Normal Form of a Specialized Jacobi-Trudi Matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathrm{JT}_λ$ be the Jacobi-Trudi matrix corresponding to the partition $λ$, so $\det\mathrm{JT}_λ$ is the Schur function $s_λ$ in the variables $x_1,x_2,\dots$. Set $x_1=\cdots=x_n=1$ and all other $x_i=0$. Then the entries of $\mathrm{JT}_λ$ become polynomials in $n$ of the form ${n+j-1\choose j}$. We determine the Smith normal form over the ring $\mathbb{Q}[n]$ of this specialization of $\mathrm{JT}_λ$. The proof carries over to the specialization $x_i=q^{i-1}$ for $1\leq i\leq n$ and $x_i=0$ for $i>n$, where we set $q^n=y$ and work over the ring $\mathbb{Q}(q)[y]$.

Random Partitions and the Quantum Benjamin-Ono Hierarchy
We derive exact and asymptotic results for random partitions from general results in the semi-classical analysis of coherent states applied to the classical periodic Benjamin-Ono equation at critical regularity $s= -1/2$. We find classical $dF_{\star |v} (c| \overline{\varepsilon})$ and quantum $d\hat{F}^{η_{NS}}( c | \hbar, \overline{\varepsilon})|_Ψ$ conserved densities for this system with dispersion coefficient $\overline{\varepsilon}$ extending Nazarov-Sklyanin (2013). For quantum stationary states, this conserved density is $dF_λ(c | \varepsilon_2, \varepsilon_1)$ the Rayleigh measure of the profile of a partition $λ$ of anisotropy $(\varepsilon_2, \varepsilon_1) \in \mathbb{C}^2$ for $\hbar = - \varepsilon_1 \varepsilon_2$, $\overline{\varepsilon}= \varepsilon_1 + \varepsilon_2$ invariant under $\varepsilon_2 \longleftrightarrow \varepsilon_1$. As Jack polynomials are the quantum stationary states and Stanley's Cauchy kernel (1989) is the reproducing kernel, the random values of the quantum periodic Benjamin-Ono hierarchy in a coherent state $Υ_v ( \cdot | \hbar)$ are a "Jack measure" on partitions, a dispersive generalization of Okounkov's Schur measures (1999). By our general results for coherent states, we have concentration on a limit shape as $\hbar \rightarrow 0$, the classical conserved density at $v$, and quantum fluctuations are an explicit Gaussian field. Our results follow from an enumerative asymptotic expansion in $\hbar$ and $\overline{\varepsilon}$ of joint cumulants over new combinatorial objects we call "ribbon paths". Our results reflect the fact that at fixed $\hbar>0$ the weight defining Fock space is already a fractional Brownian motion of variance $\hbar$ and Hurst index $(-s) - \tfrac{1}{2} \dim \mathbb{T} = + \tfrac{1}{2} - \tfrac{1}{2} = 0.$

Involution words: counting problems and connections to Schubert calculus for symmetric orbit closures
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 160 (2018), 217-260 • View PublicationBIB
Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

A family of non-Schurian $p$-Schur rings over groups of order $p^3$

Recently, it was proved that every commutative $p$-Schur ring over a group of order $p^3$ is Schurian. In this article, we consider the Schurity problem of non-commutative $p$-Schur rings over groups of order $p^3$. In particular, it is given a family of non-Schurian $p$-Schur rings over groups of order $p^3$.

Quantum integrable combinatorics of Schur polynomials
We examine and present new combinatorics for the Schur polynomials from the viewpoint of quantum integrability. We introduce and analyze an integrable six-vertex model which can be viewed as a certain degeneration model from a t-deformed boson model. By a detailed analysis of the wavefunction from the quantum inverse scattering method, we present a novel combinatorial formula which expresses the Schur polynomials by using an additional parameter, which is in the same sense but different from the Tokuyama formula. We also give an algebraic analytic proof for the Cauchy identity and make applications of the domain wall boundary partition functions to the enumeration of alternating sign matrices.

Two Murnaghan-Nakayama rules in Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Murnaghan-Nakayama rule expresses the product of a Schur function with a Newton power sum in the basis of Schur functions. We establish a version of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Schubert polynomials and a version for the quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. These rules compute all intersections of Schubert cycles with tautological classes coming from the Chern character.
