Puzzles and (equivariant) cohomology of Grassmannians
Published in Duke Math. J. 119 (2003), no. 2, 221--260 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize our puzzle formula for ordinary Schubert calculus on Grassmannians, to a formula for the T-equivariant Schubert calculus. The structure constants to be calculated are polynomials in {y_{i+1} - y_i}; they were shown (abstractly) to have positive coefficients in [Graham] math.AG/9908172. Our formula is the first to be manifestly positive in this sense. In particular this gives a new and self-contained proof of the ordinary puzzle formula, by an induction backwards from the "most equivariant" case. The proof of the formula is mostly combinatorial, but requires no prior combinatorics, and only a modicum of equivariant cohomology (which we include). This formula is closely related to the one in [Molev-Sagan] q-alg/9707028 for multiplying factorial Schur functions in three sets of variables, although their rule does not give a positive formula in the sense of [Graham]. We include a cohomological interpretation of this problem, and a puzzle formulation for it.

Quantum Cohomology of Grassmannians and Total Positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a proof of a result of D. Peterson's identifying the quantum cohomology ring of a Grassmannian with the reduced coordinate ring of a certain subvariety of $GL_n$. The totally positive part of this subvariety is then constructed and we give closed formulas for the values of the Schubert basis elements on the totally positive points. We then use the developed methods to give a new proof of a formula of Vafa and Intriligator and Bertram for the structure constants (Gromov--Witten invariants). Finally, we use the positivity of these Gromov--Witten invariants to prove certain inequalities for Schur polynomials at roots of unity.

Schur Partial Derivative Operators
Published in European J. Combin. 26 (2005), no. 6, 785--794 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice diagram is a finite list L=((p_1,q_1),...,(p_n,q_n) of lattice cells. The corresponding lattice diagram determinant is Δ_L(X;Y)=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|. These lattice diagram determinants are crucial in the study of the so-called ``n! conjecture'' of A. Garsia and M. Haiman. The space M_L is the space spanned by all partial derivatives of Δ_L(X;Y). The ``shift operators'', which are particular partial symmetric derivative operators are very useful in the comprehension of the structure of the M_L spaces. We describe here how a Schur function partial derivative operator acts on lattice diagrams with distinct cells in the positive quadrant.

Schur function identities, their t-analogs, and k-Schur irreducibility
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain general identities for the product of two Schur functions in the case where one of the functions is indexed by a rectangular partition, and give their t-analogs using vertex operators. We study subspaces forming a filtration for the symmetric function space that lends itself to generalizing the theory of Schur functions and also provides a convenient environment for studying the Macdonald polynomials. We use our identities to prove that the vertex operators leave such subspaces invariant. We finish by showing that these operators act simply on the k-Schur functions, thus leading to a concept of irreducibility for these functions.

Schur function analogs for a filtration of the symmetric function space
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a filtration of the symmetric function space given by $Λ^{(k)}_t$, the linear span of Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$. We introduce symmetric functions called the $k$-Schur functions, providing an analog for the Schur functions in the subspaces $Λ^{(k)}_t$. We prove several properties for the $k$-Schur functions including that they form a basis for these subspaces that reduces to the Schur basis when $k$ is large. We also show that the connection coefficients for the $k$-Schur function basis with the Macdonald polynomials belonging to $Λ^{(k)}_t$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ with integral coefficients. In fact, we conjecture that these integral coefficients are actually positive, and give several other conjectures generalizing Schur function theory.
The XXZ spin chain at $Δ=- {1/2}$: Bethe roots, symmetric functions and determinants
Published in J. Math. Phys. 43 (2002), 4135-4146 • View PublicationBIB
A number of conjectures have been given recently concerning the connection between the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain at $Δ= - \frac12$ and various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. Here we use the integrability of the XXZ chain to gain further insight into these developments. In doing so we obtain a number of new results using Baxter's $Q$ function for the XXZ chain for periodic, twisted and open boundary conditions. These include expressions for the elementary symmetric functions evaluated at the groundstate solution of the Bethe roots. In this approach Schur functions play a central role and enable us to derive determinant expressions which appear in certain natural double products over the Bethe roots. When evaluated these give rise to the numbers counting different symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices.
Frobenius-Schur functions
Published in In: Studies in memory of Issai Schur (Chevaleret/Rehovot, 2000), Progr. Math., vol. 210, Birkhauser Boston, 2003, 251--299 • View PublicationBIB
The present paper is a detailed version of math/0003031. We introduce and study a new basis in the algebra of symmetric functions. The elements of this basis are called the Frobenius-Schur functions (FS-functions, for short). Our main motivation for studying the FS-functions is the fact that they enter a formula expressing the combinatorial dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This formula plays a key role in the asymptotic character theory of the symmetric groups. The FS-functions are inhomogeneous, and their top homogeneous components coincide with the conventional Schur functions. The FS-functions are best described in the super realization of the algebra of symmetric functions. As supersymmetric functions, the FS-functions can be characterized as a solution to an interpolation problem. Our main result is a simple determinantal formula for the transition coefficients between the FS-functions and the Schur functions. We also establish the FS analogs for a number of basic facts concerning the Schur functions: Jacobi-Trudi formula together with its dual form; combinatorial formula (expression in terms of tableaux); Giambelli formula and the Sergeev-Pragacz formula. All these results hold for a large family of bases interpolating between the FS-functions and the ordinary Schur functions.

Partial-sum analogues of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 99 (2002), 143--161 • View PublicationBIB
A new type of polynomial analogue of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities is proven. Here the product-side of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities is replaced by a partial theta sum and the sum-side by a weighted sum over Schur polynomials.

Correlation function of Schur process with application to local geometry of a random 3-dimensional Young diagram
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur process is a time-dependent analog of the Schur measure on partitions studied in math.RT/9907127. Our first result is that the correlation functions of the Schur process are determinants with a kernel that has a nice contour integral representation in terms of the parameters of the process. This general result is then applied to a particular specialization of the Schur process, namely to random 3-dimensional Young diagrams. The local geometry of a large random 3-dimensional diagram is described in terms of a determinantal point process on a 2-dimensional lattice with the incomplete beta function kernel (which generalizes the discrete sine kernel). A brief discussion of the universality of this answer concludes the paper.

Double Centralizing Theorems for the Alternating Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $V^{\otimes n}$ be the $n$-fold tensor product of a vector space $V.$ Following I. Schur we consider the action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on $V^{\otimes n}$ by permuting coordinates. In the `super' ($\Bbb Z_2$ graded) case $V=V_0\oplus V_1,$ a $\pm$ sign is added [BR]. These actions give rise to the corresponding Schur algebras S$(S_n,V).$ Here S$(S_n,V)$ is compared with S$(A_n,V),$ the Schur algebra corresponding to the alternating subgroup $A_n\subset S_n .$ While in the `classical' (signless) case these two Schur algebras are the same for $n$ large enough, it is proved that in the `super' case where $\dim V_0=\dim V_1, $ S$(A_n,V)$ is isomorphic to the crossed-product algebra S$(A_n,V)\cong$ S$(S_n,V)\times\Bbb Z_2 .$

Applications of Symmetric Functions to Cycle and Increasing Subsequence Structure after Shuffles (Part 2)
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using the Berele/Remmel/Kerov/Vershik variation of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, we study the cycle and increasing subsequence structure after various methods of shuffling. One consequence is a cycle index for shuffles like: cut a deck into roughly two equal piles, thoroughly mix the first pile and then riffle it with the second pile. Conclusions are drawn concerning the distribution of fixed points and the asymptotic distribution of cycle structure. An upper bound on the convergence rate is given. Connections are made with extended Schur functions and with work of Baik and Rains.

Embeddings of Schur functions into types B/C/D
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of embedding the semi-ring of Schur-positive symmetric polynomials into its analogue for the classical types $B/C/D$. If we preserve highest weights and add the additional Lie-theoretic parity assumption that the weights in images of Schur functions lie in a single translate of the root lattice, there are exactly two solutions. These naturally extend the Kirillov--Reshetikhin decompositions of representations of symplectic and orthogonal quantum affine algebras $U_q(\hat{g})$ (some still conjectural, some recently proven).

q-Analogs of symmetric function operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any homomorphism V on the space of symmetric functions, we introduce an operation which creates a q-analog of V. By giving several examples we demonstrate that this quantization occurs naturally within the theory of symmetric functions. In particular, we show that the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions are formed by taking this q-analog of the Schur symmetric functions and the Macdonald symmetric functions appear by taking the q-analog of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions in the parameter t. This relation is then used to derive recurrences on the Macdonald q,t-Kostka coefficients.

Tableau atoms and a new Macdonald positivity conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Λ$ be the space of symmetric functions and $V_k$ be the subspace spanned by the modified Schur functions $\{S_λ[X/(1-t)]\}_{λ_1\leq k}$. We introduce a new family of symmetric polynomials, $\{A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]\}_{λ_1\leq k}$, constructed from sums of tableaux using the charge statistic. We conjecture that the polynomials $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ form a basis for $V_k$ and that the Macdonald polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$ expand positively in terms of our polynomials. A proof of this conjecture would not only imply the Macdonald positivity conjecture, but would substantially refine it. Our construction of the $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ relies on the use of tableaux combinatorics and yields various properties and conjectures on the nature of these polynomials. Another important development following from our investigation is that the $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ seem to play the same role for $V_k$ as the Schur functions do for $Λ$. In particular, this has led us to the discovery of many generalizations of properties held by the Schur functions, such as Pieri and Littlewood-Richardson type coefficients.

A Double Bounded Version of Schur's Partition Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur's partition theorem states that the number of partitions of n into distinct parts congruent 1, 2 (mod 3) equals the number of partitions of n into parts which differ by >= 3, where the inequality is strict if a part is a multiple of 3. We establish a double bounded refined version of this theorem by imposing one bound on the parts congruent 0,1 (mod 3) and another on the parts congruent 2 (mod 3), and by keeping track of the number of parts in each of the residue classes (mod 3). Despite the long history of Schur's theorem, our result is new, and extends earlier work of Andrews, Alladi-Gordon and Bressoud. We give combinatorial and q-theoretic proofs of our result. The special case L=M leads to a representation of the generating function of the underlying partitions in terms of the q-trinomial coefficients extending a similar previous representation of Andrews.

Bijective proofs for Schur function identities which imply Dodgson's condensation formula and Plücker relations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a ``method'' for bijective proofs for determinant identities, which is based on translating determinants to Schur functions by the Jacobi--Trudi identity. We illustrate this ``method'' by generalizing a bijective construction (which was first used by Goulden) to a class of Schur function identities, from which we shall obtain bijective proofs for Dodgson's condensation formula, Plücker relations and a recent identity of the second author.

Schur's old determinant proves a brand-new theorem of Garrett-Ismail-Stanton
Garrett, Ismail, and Stanton gave a general formula that contains the Rogers-Ramanjuan identities as special cases. We show how easy this is when using a determinant that Schur introduced in 1917.
