Non-Crossing Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In combinatorics there is a well-known duality between non-nesting and non-crossing objects. In algebra there are many objects which are standard, for example Standard Young Tableaux, Standard Monomials, Standard Bitableaux. We adopt a point of view that these standard objects are really non-nesting, and we find their non-crossing counterparts.

Properties of four partial orders on standard Young tableaux
Let SYT_n be the set of all standard Young tableaux with n cells. After recalling the definitions of four partial orders, the weak, KL, geometric and chain orders on SYT_n and some of their crucial properties, we prove three main results: (i)Intervals in any of these four orders essentially describe the product in a Hopf algebra of tableaux defined by Poirier and Reutenauer. (ii) The map sending a tableau to its descent set induces a homotopy equivalence of the proper parts of all of these orders on tableaux with that of the Boolean algebra 2^{[n-1]}. In particular, the Möbius function of these orders on tableaux is (-1)^{n-3}. (iii) For two of the four orders, one can define a more general order on skew tableaux having fixed inner boundary, and similarly analyze their homotopy type and Möbius function.

On the sign-imbalance of skew partition shapes
Let the sign of a skew standard Young tableau be the sign of the permutation you get by reading it row by row from left to right, like a book. We examine how the sign property is transferred by the skew Robinson-Schensted correspondence invented by Sagan and Stanley. The result is a remarkably simple generalization of the ordinary non-skew formula. The sum of the signs of all standard tableaux on a given skew shape is the sign-imbalance of that shape. We generalize previous results on the sign-imbalance of ordinary partition shapes to skew ones.

Distribution of the Size of a Largest Planar Matching and Largest Planar Subgraph in Random Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We address the following question: When a randomly chosen regular bipartite multi--graph is drawn in the plane in the ``standard way'', what is the distribution of its maximum size planar matching (set of non--crossing disjoint edges) and maximum size planar subgraph (set of non--crossing edges which may share endpoints)? The problem is a generalization of the Longest Increasing Sequence (LIS) problem (also called Ulam's problem). We present combinatorial identities which relate the number of $r$-regular bipartite multi--graphs with maximum planar matching (maximum planar subgraph)of at most $d$ edges to a signed sum of restricted lattice walks in $\ZZ^d$, and to the number of pairs of standard Young tableaux of the same shape and with a ``descend--type'' property. Our results are obtained via generalizations of two combinatorial proofs through which Gessel's identity can be obtained (an identity that is crucial in the derivation of a bivariate generating function associated to the distribution of LISs, and key to the analytic attack on Ulam's problem).

A determinant-like formula for the Kostka numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young tableaux are ubiquitous in various branches of mathematics. There are two counting formulas for standard Young tableaux. The first involves a determinant and goes back to Frobenius and Young, and the second is the hook formula by Frame, Robinson and Thrall. We present a generalization of the determinant formula for semistandard Young tableaux of given shape and of given content. Our counting formula -- though not a determinant -- is a generalization of the determinant formula by Frobenius and Young.

The combinatorics of orbital varieties closures of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n)
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, vol. 12(1), 2005, R21 • View PublicationBIB
We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).

Spin-preserving Knuth correspondences for ribbon tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
The RSK correspondence generalises the Robinson-Schensted correspondence by replacing permutation matrices by matrices with entries in ${\bf N}$, and standard Young tableaux by semistandard ones. For $r>0$, the Robinson-Schensted correspondence can be trivially extended, using the $r$-quotient map, to one between coloured permutations and pairs of standard $r$-ribbon tableaux built on a fixed $r$-core (the Stanton-White correspondence). This correspondence can also be generalised to arbitrary matrices with entries in ${\bf N}^r$ and pairs of semistandard $r$-ribbon tableaux built on a fixed $r$-core; the generalisation is derived from the RSK correspondence, again using the $r$-quotient map. Shimozono and White recently defined a more interesting generalisation of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to coloured permutations and standard $r$-ribbon tableaux, one that (unlike the Stanton-White correspondence) respects the spin statistic (total height of ribbons) on standard $r$-ribbon tableaux, relating it directly to the colours of the coloured permutation. We define a construction establishing a bijective correspondence between general matrices with entries in ${\bf N}^r$ and pairs of semistandard $r$-ribbon tableaux built on a fixed $r$-core, which respects the spin statistic on those tableaux in a similar manner, relating it directly to the matrix entries. We also define a similar generalisation of the asymmetric RSK correspondence, in which case the matrix entries are taken from $\{0,1\}^r$.

On the sign-imbalance of partition shapes
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 111 (2005) 190-203 • Search Publication
Let the sign of a standard Young tableau be the sign of the permutation you get by reading it row by row from left to right, like a book. A conjecture by Richard Stanley says that the sum of the signs of all SYTs with n squares is 2^[n/2]. We present a stronger theorem with a purely combinatorial proof using the Robinson-Schensted correspondence and a new concept called chess tableaux. We also prove a sharpening of another conjecture by Stanley concerning weighted sums of squares of sign-imbalances. The proof is built on a remarkably simple relation between the sign of a permutation and the signs of its RS-corresponding tableaux.

Rational representations of Yangians associated with skew Young diagrams
Published in Math. Z. 247 (2004), 21-63 • View PublicationBIB
Let $GL_M$ be general linear Lie group over the complex field. The irreducible rational representations of the group $GL_M$ are labeled by pairs of partitions $μ$ and $\tildeμ$ such that the total number of non-zero parts of $μ$ and $\tildeμ$ does not exceed $M$. Let $U$ be the representation of $GL_M$ corresponding to such a pair. Regard the direct product $GL_N\times GL_M$ as a subgroup of $GL_{N+M}$. Let $V$ be the irreducible rational representation of the group $GL_{N+M}$ corresponding to a pair of partitions $λ$ and $\tildeλ$. Consider the vector space $W=Hom_{G_M}(U,V)$. It comes with a natural action of the group $GL_N$. Let $n$ be sum of parts of $λ$ less the sum of parts of $μ$. Let $\tilde{n}$ be sum of parts of $\tildeλ$ less the sum of parts of $\tildeμ$. For any choice of two standard Young tableaux of skew shapes $λ/μ$ and $\tildeλ/\tildeμ$ respectively, we realize $W$ as a subspace in the tensor product of $n$ copies of the defining $N$-dimensional representation of $GL_N$, and of $\tilde{n}$ copies of the contragredient representation. This subspace is determined as the image of a certain linear operator $F$ in the tensor product, given by explicit multiplicative formula. When M=0 and $W=V$ is an irreducible representation of $GL_N$, we recover the classical realization of $V$ as a subspace in the space of all traceless tensors. Then the operator $F$ can be regarded as the rational analogue of the Young symmetrizer, corresponding to the chosen standard tableau of shape $λ$. Even in the special case M=0, our formula for the operator $F$ is new. Our results are applications of representation theory of the Yangian of the Lie algebra $gl_N$.

Representations of twisted Yangians associated with skew Young diagrams

Let $G_M$ be one of the complex Lie groups $O_M$ and $Sp_M$. The irreducible finite-dimensional representations of the group $G_M$ are labeled by partitions $μ$ satisfying certain extra conditions. Let $U$ be the representation of $G_M$ corresponding to $μ$. Regard the direct product $G_N\times G_M$ as a subgroup of $G_{N+M}$. Let $V$ be the irreducible representation of $G_{N+M}$ corresponding to a partition $λ$. Consider the vector space $W=Hom_{G_M}(U,V)$. It comes with a natural action of the group $G_N$. Let $n$ be sum of parts of $λ$ less the sum of parts of $μ$. For any choice of a standard Young tableau of skew shape $λ/μ$, we realize $W$ as a subspace in the tensor product of $n$ copies of the defining $N$-dimensional representation of $G_N$. This subspace is determined as the image of a certain linear operator $F(M)$ in the tensor product, given by an explicit formula. When M=0 and $W=V$ is an irreducible representation of $G_N$, we recover the classical realization of $V$ as a subspace in the space of all traceless tensors. Then the operator F(0) can be regarded as the analogue for $G_N$ of the Young symmetrizer, corresponding to the chosen standard tableau of shape $λ$. Even in the special case M=0, our formula for the operator $F(M)$ is new. Our results are applications of representation theory of the twisted Yangian, corresponding to $G_N$. In particular, $F(M)$ is an intertwining operator between two representations of the twisted Yangian in the $n$-fold tensor product.

Subsequence containment by involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by work of McKay, Morse, and Wilf, we give an exact count of the involutions in S_n which contain a given permutation τin S_k as a subsequence; this number depends on the patterns of the first j values of τfor 1<=j<=k. We then use this to define a partition of S_k, analogous to Wilf-classes in the study of pattern avoidance, and examine properties of this equivalence. In the process, we show that a permutation τ_1...τ_k is layered iff, for 1<=j<=k, the pattern of τ_1...τ_j is an involution. We also obtain a result of Sagan and Stanley counting the standard Young tableaux of size $n$ which contain a fixed tableau of size $k$ as a subtableau.

Noncommutative symmetric functions VI: Free quasi-symmetric functions and related algebras
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation 12 (2002), 671-717 • View PublicationBIB
This article is devoted to the study of several algebras which are related to symmetric functions, and which admit linear bases labelled by various combinatorial objects: permutations (free quasi-symmetric functions), standard Young tableaux (free symmetric functions) and packed integer matrices (matrix quasi-symmetric functions). Free quasi-symmetric functions provide a kind of noncommutative Frobenius characteristic for a certain category of modules over the 0-Hecke algebras. New examples of indecomposable $H_n(0)$-modules are discussed, and the homological properties of $H_n(0)$ are computed for small $n$. Finally, the algebra of matrix quasi-symmetric functions is interpreted as a convolution algebra.

On the hypersurface orbital varieties of sl(N,C)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the structure of hypersurface orbital varieties of sl(N,C) (those that are hypersurfaces in the nilradical of some parabolic subalgebra) and how information about this structure is encoded in the standard Young tableau associated to it by the Robinson-Schensted algorithm. We present a conjecture for the exact form of the unique non-linear defining equations of hypersurface orbital varieties and proofs of the conjecture in certain cases.

The distributions of the entries of Young tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let T^* be a standard Young tableau of k cells. We show that the probability that a Young tableau of n cells contains T^* as a subtableau is, in the limit n -> \infty, equal to ν(π(T^*))/k!, where π(T^*) is the shape (= Ferrers diagram) of T^* and ν(π) is the number of all tableaux of shape π. In other words, the probability that a large tableau contains T^* is equal to the number of tableaux whose shape is that of T^*, divided by k!. We give several applications, to the probabilities that a set of prescribed entries will appear in a set of prescribed cells of a tableau, and to the probabilities that subtableaux of given shapes will occur. Our argument rests on a notion of quasirandomness of families of permutations, and we give sufficient conditions for this to hold. We then extend these results by finding an explicit formula for the limiting probability that a Young tableau has a given set of entries in a given set of positions. The result is that the limiting probability that a Young tableau has a prescribed set of entries k_1,k_2,..., k_m in a prescribed set of m cells is equal to the sum of the measures of all tableaux on K cells (K=\max{\{k_i\}}) that have the given entries in the given positions, where the measure of a tableau of K cells is the number of tableaux of its shape divided by K!. In the proof we also develop conditions that ensure the quasirandomness of certain families of permutations.

On Descents in Standard Young Tableaux
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 7(2000), R59 • Search Publication
In this paper, explicit formulae for the expectation and the variance of descent functions on random standard Young tableaux are presented. Using these, it is shown that the normalized variance, $V/E^2$, is bounded if and only if a certain inequality relating tableau shape to the descent function holds.

Flag varieties and interpretations of Young tableau algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conjugacy classes of nilpotent $n\times n$ matrices can be parametrised by partitions $λ$ of $n$, and for a nilpotent $η$ in the class parametrised by $λ$, the variety $F_η$ of $η$-stable flags has its irreducible components parametrised by the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$. We indicate how several algorithmic constructions defined for Young tableaux have significance in this context, thus extending Steinberg's result that the relative position of flags generically chosen in the irreducible components of $F_η$ parametrised by tableaux $P$ and $Q$, is the permutation associated to $(P,Q)$ under the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Other constructions for which we give interpretations are Schützenberger's involution of the set of Young tableaux, jeu de taquin (leading also to an interpretation of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients), and the transpose Robinson-Schensted correspondence (defined using column insertion). In each case we use a doubly indexed family of partitions, defined in terms of the flag (or pair of flags) determined by a point chosen in the variety under consideration. We show that for generic choices, the family satisfies certain combinatorial relations, whence the family describes the computation of the algorithmic operation being interpreted, as we described in a previous publication.

Another involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 88 (1999), 66-92 • View PublicationBIB
Another bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula for the generating function for semistandard tableaux of a given shape is given that does not involve the involution principle of Garsia and Milne. It is the result of a merge of the modified jeu de taquin idea from the author's previous bijective proof (``An involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula", Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science, to appear) and the Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii bijection (Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science 1 (1997), 53-67) for the hook formula for standard Young tableaux of a given shape. This new algorithm can also be used as an algorithm for the random generation of tableaux of a given shape with bounded entries. An appropriate deformation of this algorithm gives an algorithm for the random generation of plane partitions inside a given box.
