The computation of generalized Ehrhart series in Normaliz
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe an algorithm for the computation of generalized (or weighted) Ehrhart series based on Stanley decompositions as implemented in the offspring NmzIntegrate of Normaliz. The algorithmic approach includes elementary proofs of the basic results. we illustrate the computations by examples from combinatorial voting theory.
Modular decomposition of the Orlik-Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangement
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 18 (2014), no. 2, 289-312 • View PublicationBIB
Let A be a collection of n linear hyperplanes in k^l, where k is an algebraically closed field. The Orlik-Terao algebra of A is the subalgebra R(A) of the rational functions generated by reciprocals of linear forms vanishing on hyperplanes of A. It determines an irreducible subvariety of projective space. We show that a flat X of A is modular if and only if R(A) is a split extension of the Orlik-Terao algebra of the subarrangement A_X. This provides another refinement of Stanley's modular factorization theorem and a new characterization of modularity, similar in spirit to the modular fibration theorem of Paris. We deduce that if A is supersolvable, then its Orlik-Terao algebra is Koszul. In certain cases, the algebra is also a complete intersection, and we characterize when this happens.

Crossings and Nestings for Arc-Coloured Permutations
Published in DMTCS Proceedings, 0(01):743-754, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
The equidistribution of many crossing and nesting statistics exists in several combinatorial objects like matchings, set partitions, permutations, and embedded labelled graphs. The involutions switching nesting and crossing numbers for set partitions given by Krattenthaler, also by Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan, and for permutations given by Burrill, Mishna, and Post involved passing through tableau-like objects. Recently, Chen and Guo for matchings, and Marberg for set partitions extended the result to coloured arc annotated diagrams. We prove that symmetric joint distribution continues to hold for arc-coloured permutations. As in Marberg's recent work, but through a different interpretation, we also conclude that the ordinary generating functions for all $j$-noncrossing, $k$-nonnesting, $r$-coloured permutations according to size $n$ are rational functions. We use the interpretation to automate the generation of these rational series for both noncrossing and nonnesting coloured set partitions and permutations.

The Flag Descent Algebra and the Colored Eulerian Descent Algebra
We prove that the group algebra of the hyperoctahedral group contains a subalgebra corresponding to the flag descent number of Adin, Brenti, and Roichman. This algebra is in fact the span of the basis elements of the type A and type B Eulerian descent algebras. We describe a set of orthogonal idempotents which spans the flag descent algebra and prove that it contains the type A Eulerian descent algebra as a two-sided ideal. Using a new colored analogue of Stanley's $P$-partitions, we prove the existence of a colored Eulerian descent algebra which is a subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra. We also describe a set of orthogonal idempotents that spans the colored Eulerian descent algebra and includes, as a special case, the familiar Eulerian idempotents in the group algebra of the symmetric group.

On supersolvable reflection arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let A = (A,V) be a complex hyperplane arrangement and let L(A) denote its intersection lattice. The arrangement A is called supersolvable, provided its lattice L(A) is supersolvable, a notion due to Stanley. Jambu and Terao showed that every supersolvable arrangement is inductively free, a notion due to Terao. So this is a natural subclass of this particular class of free arrangements. Suppose that W is a finite, unitary reflection group acting on the complex vector space V. Let A = (A(W), V) be the associated hyperplane arrangement of W. In a recent paper, we determined all inductively free reflection arrangements. The aim of this note is to classify all supersolvable reflection arrangements. Moreover, we characterize the irreducible arrangements in this class by the presence of modular elements of rank 2 in their intersection lattice.

How to compute the multigraded Hilbert depth of a module
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to introduce a method for computing Hilbert decompositions (and consequently the Hilbert depth) of a finitely generated multigraded module $M$ over the polynomial ring $K[X_1,..., X_n]$ by reducing the problem to the computation of the finite set of the new defined Hilbert partitions. Moreover, in the last section, we show that Hilbert partitions may also be used for computing the Stanley depth of the module $M$.

A canonical expansion of the product of two Stanley symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of expanding the product of two Stanley symmetric functions $F_w\cdot F_u$ into Stanley symmetric functions in some natural way. Our approach is to consider a Stanley symmetric function as a stabilized Schubert polynomial $F_{w}=\lim_{n\to \infty}\mathfrak{S}_{1^{n}\times w}$, and study the behavior of the expansion of $\s_{1^n\times w}\cdot\s_{1^n\times u}$ into Schubert polynomials, as $n$ increases. We prove that this expansion stabilizes and thus we get a natural expansion for the product of two Stanley symmetric functions. In the case when one permutation is Grassmannian, we have a better understanding of this stability. We then study some other related stable properties, which provides a second proof of the main result.

Proper caterpillars are distinguished by their symmetric chromatic function
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper deals with the so-called Stanley conjecture, which asks whether they are non-isomorphic trees with the same symmetric function generalization of the chromatic polynomial. By establishing a correspondence between caterpillars trees and integer compositions, we prove that caterpillars in a large class (we call trees in this class proper) have the same symmetric chromatic function generalization of the chromatic polynomial if and only if they are isomorphic.

Lexsegment ideals of Hilbert depth 1
Let $I\subset S=\KK[x_1,...,x_n]$ be a lexsegment ideal, generated by monomials of degree $d$. The main aim of this paper is to characterize when the Hilbert depth of $I$ will be 1, in the standard graded case. In addition to this, we will give an estimate of depth of squarefree monomial ideals, generalizing a result of Popescu. We will also show that Stanley conjecture holds for squarefree stable ideals, in the multigraded case.

Flow polytopes of signed graphs and the Kostant partition function
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 3 (2015) 830-871 • View PublicationBIB
We establish the relationship between volumes of flow polytopes associated to signed graphs and the Kostant partition function. A special case of this relationship, namely, when the graphs are signless, has been studied in detail by Baldoni and Vergne using techniques of residues. In contrast with their approach, we provide entirely combinatorial proofs inspired by the work of Postnikov and Stanley on flow polytopes. As a fascinating special family of flow polytopes, we study the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes. Motivated by the beautiful volume formula $\prod_{k=1}^{n-2} Cat(k)$ for the type $A_n$ version, where $Cat(k)$ is the $k$th Catalan number, we introduce type $C_{n+1}$ and $D_{n+1}$ Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes along with intriguing conjectures pertaining to their properties.

Theorems, Problems and Conjectures
These notes are designed to offer some (perhaps new) codicils to related work, a list of problems and conjectures seeking (preferably) combinatorial proofs. The main items are Eulerian polynomials and hook/contents of Young diagram, mostly on the latter. We also have items on Frobenius theorem and multi-core partitions; most recently, some problems on (what we call) colored over-partitions. Formulas analogues to or in the spirit of works by Han, Nekrasov-Okounkov and Stanley are distributed throughout. Concluding remarks are provided at the end in hopes of directing the interested researcher, properly. The newly added problem is on chromatic polynomials

Stanley depth of the integral closure of monomial ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $I$ be a monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,...,x_n]$. We study the Stanley depth of the integral closure $\bar{I}$ of $I$. We prove that for every integer $k\geq 1$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth} (S/\bar{I^k}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (S/\bar{I})$ and ${\rm sdepth} (\bar{I^k}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (\bar{I})$ hold. We also prove that for every monomial ideal $I\subset S$ there exist integers $k_1,k_2\geq 1$, such that for every $s\geq 1$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth} (S/I^{sk_1}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (S/\bar{I})$ and ${\rm sdepth} (I^{sk_2}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (\bar{I})$ hold. In particular, $\min_k \{{\rm sdepth} (S/I^k)\} \leq {\rm sdepth} (S/\bar{I})$ and $\min_k \{{\rm sdepth} (I^k)\} \leq {\rm sdepth} (\bar{I})$. We conjecture that for every integrally closed monomial ideal $I$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(S/I)\geq n-\ell(I)$ and ${\rm sdepth} (I)\geq n-\ell(I)+1$ hold, where $\ell(I)$ is the analytic spread of $I$. Assuming the conjecture is true, it follows together with the Burch's inequality that Stanley's conjecture holds for $I^k$ and $S/I^k$ for $k\gg 0$, provided that $I$ is a normal ideal.
A Central Limit Theorem for Repeating Patterns
We prove a central limit theorem for the length of the longest subsequence of a random permutation which follows one of a class of repeating patterns. This class includes every fixed pattern of ups and downs having at least one of each, such as the alternating case considered by Stanley in arXiv:math/0511419 and Widom in arXiv:math/0511533. In every case considered the convergence in the limit of long permutations is to normal with mean and variance linear in the length of the permutation.

A bivariate chromatic polynomial for signed graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 31 (2015), 1211-1221 • View PublicationBIB
We study Dohmen--Pönitz--Tittmann's bivariate chromatic polynomial $c_Γ(k,l)$ which counts all $(k+l)$-colorings of a graph $Γ$ such that adjacent vertices get different colors if they are $\le k$. Our first contribution is an extension of $c_Γ(k,l)$ to signed graphs, for which we obtain an inclusion--exclusion formula and several special evaluations giving rise, e.g., to polynomials that encode balanced subgraphs. Our second goal is to derive combinatorial reciprocity theorems for $c_Γ(k,l)$ and its signed-graph analogues, reminiscent of Stanley's reciprocity theorem linking chromatic polynomials to acyclic orientations.

Mixing time of Metropolis chain based on random transposition walk converging to multivariate Ewens distribution
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2015, Vol. 25, No. 3, 1581-1615 • View PublicationBIB
We prove sharp rates of convergence to the Ewens equilibrium distribution for a family of Metropolis algorithms based on the random transposition shuffle on the symmetric group, with starting point at the identity. The proofs rely heavily on the theory of symmetric Jack polynomials, developed initially by Jack [Proc. Roy. Soc. Edinburgh Sect. A 69 (1970/1971) 1-18], Macdonald [Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials (1995) New York] and Stanley [Adv. Math. 77 (1989) 76-115]. This completes the analysis started by Diaconis and Hanlon in [Contemp. Math. 138 (1992) 99-117]. In the end we also explore other integrable Markov chains that can be obtained from symmetric function theory.
The local $h$-vector of the cluster subdivision of a simplex
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 66 (2012), Article B66c, 21pp • Search Publication
The cluster complex $Δ(Φ)$ is an abstract simplicial complex, introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky for a finite root system $Φ$. The positive part of $Δ(Φ)$ naturally defines a simplicial subdivision of the simplex on the vertex set of simple roots of $Φ$. The local $h$-vector of this subdivision, in the sense of Stanley, is computed and the corresponding $γ$-vector is shown to be nonnegative. Combinatorial interpretations to the entries of the local $h$-vector and the corresponding $γ$-vector are provided for the classical root systems, in terms of noncrossing partitions of types $A$ and $B$. An analogous result is given for the barycentric subdivision of a simplex.

Crossings and nestings in colored set partitions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 20 (2013), no. 4, Research Paper 6 • View PublicationBIB
Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan introduced the notion of $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings for set partitions, and proved that the sizes of the largest $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings in the partitions of an $n$-set possess a symmetric joint distribution. This work considers a generalization of these results to set partitions whose arcs are labeled by an $r$-element set (which we call \emph{$r$-colored set partitions}). In this context, a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting is a sequence of arcs, all with the same color, which form a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting in the usual sense. After showing that the sizes of the largest crossings and nestings in colored set partitions likewise have a symmetric joint distribution, we consider several related enumeration problems. We prove that $r$-colored set partitions with no crossing arcs of the same color are in bijection with certain paths in $\NN^r$, generalizing the correspondence between noncrossing (uncolored) set partitions and 2-Motzkin paths. Combining this with recent work of Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna affords a proof that the sequence counting noncrossing 2-colored set partitions is P-recursive. We also discuss how our methods extend to several variations of colored set partitions with analogous notions of crossings and nestings.

On the generalized lower bound conjecture for polytopes and spheres
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1971, McMullen and Walkup posed the following conjecture, which is called the generalized lower bound conjecture: If $P$ is a simplicial $d$-polytope then its $h$-vector $(h_0,h_1,...,h_d)$ satisfies $h_0 \leq h_1 \leq ... \leq h_{\lfloor \frac d 2 \rfloor}$. Moreover, if $h_{r-1}=h_r$ for some $r \leq \frac d 2$ then $P$ can be triangulated without introducing simplices of dimension $\leq d-r$. The first part of the conjecture was solved by Stanley in 1980 using the hard Lefschetz theorem for projective toric varieties. In this paper, we give a proof of the remaining part of the conjecture. In addition, we generalize this property to a certain class of simplicial spheres, namely those admitting the weak Lefschetz property.

A simple model of trees for unicellular maps
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 120, 8 (2013) Pages 2064-2092 • View PublicationBIB
We consider unicellular maps, or polygon gluings, of fixed genus. A few years ago the first author gave a recursive bijection transforming unicellular maps into trees, explaining the presence of Catalan numbers in counting formulas for these objects. In this paper, we give another bijection that explicitly describes the "recursive part" of the first bijection. As a result we obtain a very simple description of unicellular maps as pairs made by a plane tree and a permutation-like structure. All the previously known formulas follow as an immediate corollary or easy exercise, thus giving a bijective proof for each of them, in a unified way. For some of these formulas, this is the first bijective proof, e.g. the Harer-Zagier recurrence formula, the Lehman-Walsh formula and the Goupil-Schaeffer formula. We also discuss several applications of our construction: we obtain a new proof of an identity related to covered maps due to Bernardi and the first author, and thanks to previous work of the second author, we give a new expression for Stanley character polynomials, which evaluate irreducible characters of the symmetric group. Finally, we show that our techniques apply partially to unicellular 3-constellations and to related objects that we call quasi-constellations.

Differential posets have strict rank growth: a conjecture of Stanley

We establish strict growth for the rank function of an r-differential poset. We do so by exploiting the representation theoretic techniques developed by Reiner and the author for studying related Smith forms.
