Zonal polynomials via Stanley's coordinates and free cumulants
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 334, Issue 1, 2011, Pages 338-373 • View PublicationBIB
We study zonal characters which are defined as suitably normalized coefficients in the expansion of zonal polynomials in terms of power-sum symmetric functions. We show that the zonal characters, just like the characters of the symmetric groups, admit a nice combinatorial description in terms of Stanley's multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams. We also study the analogue of Kerov polynomials, namely we express the zonal characters as polynomials in free cumulants and we give an explicit combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients. In this way, we prove two recent conjectures of Lassalle for Jack polynomials in the special case of zonal polynomials.

A quasisymmetric function generalization of the chromatic symmetric function
Published • View PublicationBIB
The chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$ was introduced by Stanley. In this paper we introduce a quasisymmetric generalization $X^k_G$ called the $k$-chromatic quasisymmetric function of $G$ and show that it is positive in the fundamental basis for the quasisymmetric functions. Following the specialization of $X_G$ to $χ_G(λ)$, the chromatic polynomial, we also define a generalization $χ^k_G(λ)$ and show that evaluations of this polynomial for negative values generalize a theorem of Stanley relating acyclic orientations to the chromatic polynomial.

On the shape of a pure O-sequence
Published in Memoirs AMS 218 (2012), no. 2024, vii + 78 pp • View PublicationBIB
An order ideal is a finite poset X of (monic) monomials such that, whenever M is in X and N divides M, then N is in X. If all, say t, maximal monomials of X have the same degree, then X is pure (of type t). A pure O-sequence is the vector, h=(1,h_1,...,h_e), counting the monomials of X in each degree. Equivalently, in the language of commutative algebra, pure O-sequences are the h-vectors of monomial Artinian level algebras. Pure O-sequences had their origin in one of Richard Stanley's early works in this area, and have since played a significant role in at least three disciplines: the study of simplicial complexes and their f-vectors, level algebras, and matroids. This monograph is intended to be the first systematic study of the theory of pure O-sequences. Our work, making an extensive use of algebraic and combinatorial techniques, includes: (i) A characterization of the first half of a pure O-sequence, which gives the exact converse to an algebraic g-theorem of Hausel; (ii) A study of (the failing of) the unimodality property; (iii) The problem of enumerating pure O-sequences, including a proof that almost all O-sequences are pure, and the asymptotic enumeration of socle degree 3 pure O-sequences of type t; (iv) The Interval Conjecture for Pure O-sequences (ICP), which represents perhaps the strongest possible structural result short of an (impossible?) characterization; (v) A pithy connection of the ICP with Stanley's matroid h-vector conjecture; (vi) A specific study of pure O-sequences of type 2, including a proof of the Weak Lefschetz Property in codimension 3 in characteristic zero. As a corollary, pure O-sequences of codimension 3 and type 2 are unimodal (over any field); (vii) An analysis of the extent to which the Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties can fail for monomial algebras; (viii) Some observations about pure f-vectors, an important special case of pure O-sequences.

Cumulants and convolutions via Abel polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide an unifying polynomial expression giving moments in terms of cumulants, and viceversa, holding in the classical, boolean and free setting. This is done by using a symbolic treatment of Abel polynomials. As a by-product, we show that in the free cumulant theory the volume polynomial of Pitman and Stanley plays the role of the complete Bell exponential polynomial in the classical theory. Moreover via generalized Abel polynomials we construct a new class of cumulants, including the classical, boolean and free ones, and the convolutions linearized by them. Finally, via an umbral Fourier transform, we state a explicit connection between boolean and free convolution.

Linear equations for the number of intervals which are isomorphic with Boolean lattices and the Dehn--Sommerville equations
Let $P$ be a finite poset. Let $L:=J(P)$ denote the lattice of order ideals of $P$. Let $b_i(L)$ denote the number of Boolean intervals of $L$ of rank $i$. We construct a simple graph $G(P)$ from our poset $P$. Denote by $f_i(P)$ the number of the cliques $K_{i+1}$, contained in the graph $G(P)$. Our main results are some linear equations connecting the numbers $f_i(P)$ and $b_i(L)$. We reprove the Dehn--Sommerville equations for simplicial polytopes. In our proof we use free resolutions and the theory of Stanley--Reisner rings.

A Note on the Stanley Distribution
Richard Stanley proved that the centralized/normalized version of the random variable "length of largest up-down subsequence" in a random permutation of length n is asymptotically normal. We go beyond and present a more refined asymptotic formula for the moments.

Finite Eulerian posets which are binomial, Sheffer or triangular
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study finite Eulerian posets which are binomial, Sheffer or triangular. These important classes of posets are related to the theory of generating functions and to geometry. The results of this paper are organized as follows: We completely determine the structure of Eulerian binomial posets and, as a conclusion, we are able to classify factorial functions of Eulerian binomial posets; We give an almost complete classification of factorial functions of Eulerian Sheffer posets by dividing the original question into several cases; In most cases above, we completely determine the structure of Eulerian Sheffer posets, a result stronger than just classifying factorial functions of these Eulerian Sheffer posets. We also study Eulerian triangular posets. This paper answers questions asked by R. Ehrenborg and M. Readdy. This research is also motivated by the work of R. Stanley about recognizing the boolean lattice by looking at smaller intervals.

On a conjecture of Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we partially confirm a conjecture, proposed by Cimpoeaş, Keller, Shen, Streib and Young, on the Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals $I_{n,d}$. This conjecture suggests that, for positive integers $1 \le d \le n$, $\sdepth (I_{n,d})= \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$. Herzog, Vladoiu and Zheng established a connection between the Stanley depths of quotients of monomial ideals and interval partitions of certain associated posets. Based on this connection, Keller, Shen, Streib and Young recently developed a useful combinatorial tool to analyze the interval partitions of the posets associated with the squarefree Veronese ideals. We modify their ideas and prove that if $1 \le d \le n \le (d+1) \lfloor \frac{1+\sqrt{5+4d}}{2}\rfloor+2d$, then $\sdepth (I_{n,d})= \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$. We also obtain $ \lfloor \frac{d+\sqrt{d^2+4(n+1)}}{2} \rfloor \le \sdepth(I_{n,d}) \le \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$ for $n > (d+1) \lfloor \frac{1+\sqrt{5+4d}}{2}\rfloor+2d$. As a byproduct of our construction, We give an alternative proof of Theorem $1.1 $ in $[13]$ without graph theory.

Stanley Decompositions and Polarization
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define nice partitions of the multicomplex associated to a Stanley ideal. As the main result we show that if the monomial ideal $I$ is a CM Stanley ideal, then $I^p$ is a Stanley ideal as well, where $I^p$ is the polarization of $I$.
On the Stanley Depth of Squarefree Veronese Ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be a field and $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. In 1982, Stanley defined what is now called the Stanley depth of an $S$-module $M$, denoted $\sdepth(M)$, and conjectured that $\depth(M) \le \sdepth(M)$ for all finitely generated $S$-modules $M$. This conjecture remains open for most cases. However, Herzog, Vladoiu and Zheng recently proposed a method of attack in the case when $M = I / J$ with $J \subset I$ being monomial $S$-ideals. Specifically, their method associates $M$ with a partially ordered set. In this paper we take advantage of this association by using combinatorial tools to analyze squarefree Veronese ideals in $S$. In particular, if $I_{n,d}$ is the squarefree Veronese ideal generated by all squarefree monomials of degree $d$, we show that if $1\le d\le n < 5d+4$, then $\sdepth(I_{n,d})= \floor{\binom{n}{d+1}\Big/\binom{n}{d}}+d$, and if $d\geq 1$ and $n\ge 5d+4$, then $d+3\le \sdepth(I_{n,d}) \le \floor{\binom{n}{d+1}\Big/\binom{n}{d}}+d$.

Iterated sequences and the geometry of zeros
Published in J. Reine Angew. Math. 658 (2011), 115-131 • View PublicationBIB
We study the effect on the zeros of generating functions of sequences under certain non-linear transformations. Characterizations of Pólya--Schur type are given of the transformations that preserve the property of having only real and non-positive zeros. In particular, if a polynomial $a_0+a_1z +\cdots+a_nz^n$ has only real and non-positive zeros, then so does the polynomial $a_0^2+ (a_1^2-a_0a_2)z+...+ (a_{n-1}^2-a_{n-2}a_n)z^{n-1}+a_n^2z^n$. This confirms a conjecture of Fisk, McNamara-Sagan and Stanley, respectively. A consequence is that if a polynomial has only real and non-positive zeros, then its Taylor coefficients form an infinitely log-concave sequence. We extend the results to transcendental entire functions in the Laguerre-Pólya class, and discuss the consequences to problems on iterated Turán inequalities, studied by Craven and Csordas. Finally, we propose a new approach to a conjecture of Boros and Moll.

Face numbers of generalized balanced Cohen-Macaulay complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A common generalization of two theorems on the face numbers of Cohen-Macaulay (CM, for short) simplicial complexes is established: the first is the theorem of Stanley (necessity) and Bjorner-Frankl-Stanley (sufficiency) that characterizes all possible face numbers of a-balanced CM complexes, while the second is the theorem of Novik (necessity) and Browder (sufficiency) that characterizes the face numbers of CM subcomplexes of the join of the boundaries of simplices.
Stanley decompositions and Hilbert depth in the Koszul complex
Published in J. Commut. Algebra 2 (2010), 327-357 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley decompositions of multigraded modules $M$ over polynomials rings have been discussed intensively in recent years. There is a natural notion of depth that goes with a Stanley decomposition, called the Stanley depth. Stanley conjectured that the Stanley depth of a module $M$ is always at least the (classical) depth of $M$. In this paper we introduce a weaker type of decomposition, which we call Hilbert decomposition, since it only depends on the Hilbert function of $M$, and an analogous notion of depth, called Hilbert depth. Since Stanley decompositions are Hilbert decompositions, the latter set upper bounds to the existence of Stanley decompositions. The advantage of Hilbert decompositions is that they are easier to find. We test our new notion on the syzygy modules of the residue class field of $K[X_1,...,X_n]$ (as usual identified with $K$). Writing $M(n,k)$ for the $k$-th syzygy module, we show that theHilbert depth of M(n,1) is $\lfloor(n+1)/2\rfloor$. Furthermore, we show that, for $n > k \ge \lfloor n/2\rfloor$, the Hilbert depth of $M(n,k)$ is equal to $n-1$. We conjecture that the same holds for the Stanley depth. For the range $n/2 > k > 1$, it seems impossible to come up with a compact formula for the Hilbert depth. Instead, we provide very precise asymptotic results as $n$ becomes large.

A Variant of the Stanley Depth for Multisets
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 342, Issue 5, May 2019, Pages 1325--1335 • View PublicationBIB
We define and study a variant of the \emph{Stanley depth} which we call \emph{total depth} for partially ordered sets (posets). This total depth is the most natural variant of Stanley depth from $\llbracket S_k\rrbracket$ -- the poset of nonempty subsets of $\{1,2,\dots,k\}$ ordered by inclusion -- to any finite poset. In particular, the total depth can be defined for the poset of nonempty submultisets of a multiset ordered by inclusion, which corresponds to a product of chains with the bottom element deleted. We show that the total depth agrees with Stanley depth for $\llbracket S_k\rrbracket$ but not for such posets in general. We also prove that the total depth of the product of chains $\bm{n}^k$ with the bottom element deleted is $(n-1)\lceil{k/2}\rceil$, which generalizes a result of Bir{ó}, Howard, Keller, Trotter, and Young (2010). Further, we provide upper and lower bounds for a general multiset and find the total depth for any multiset with at most five distinct elements. In addition, we can determine the total depth for any multiset with $k$ distinct elements if we know all the interval partitions of $\llbracket S_k\rrbracket$.

Nowhere-Harmonic Colorings of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Proper vertex colorings of a graph are related to its boundary map, also called its signed vertex-edge incidence matrix. The vertex Laplacian of a graph, a natural extension of the boundary map, leads us to introduce nowhere-harmonic colorings and analogues of the chromatic polynomial and Stanley's theorem relating negative evaluations of the chromatic polynomial to acyclic orientations. Further, we discuss some examples demonstrating that nowhere-harmonic colorings are more complicated from an enumerative perspective than proper colorings.

Ehrhart theory, Modular flow reciprocity, and the Tutte polynomial
Published in Math. Z. 270 (2012), no. 1-2, 1-18 • View PublicationBIB
Given an oriented graph G, the modular flow polynomial counts the number of nowhere-zero Z_k-flows of G. We give a description of the modular flow polynomial in terms of (open) Ehrhart polynomials of lattice polytopes. Using Ehrhart-Macdonald reciprocity we give a combinatorial interpretation for the values of the modular flow polynomial at negative arguments which answers a question of Beck and Zaslavsky (2006). Our construction extends to Z_l-tensions and we recover Stanley's reciprocity theorem for the chromatic polynomial. Combining the combinatorial reciprocity statements for flows and tensions, we give an enumerative interpretation for positive evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of G.

Jucys-Murphy Elements and Unitary Matrix Integrals
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices (2013), no. 2, 362--397 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the relationship between polynomial integrals on the unitary group and the conjugacy class expansion of symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements. Our main result is an explicit formula for the top coefficients in the class expansion of monomial symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements, from which we recover the first order asymptotics of polynomial integrals over $\U(N)$ as $N \rightarrow \infty$. Our results on class expansion include an analogue of Macdonald's result for the top connection coefficients of the class algebra, a generalization of Stanley and Olshanski's result on the polynomiality of content statistics on Plancherel-random partitions, and an exact formula for the multiplicity of the class of full cycles in the expansion of a complete symmetric function in Jucys-Murphy elements. The latter leads to a new combinatorial interpretation of the Carlitz-Riordan central factorial numbers.

Plancherel averages: Remarks on a paper by Stanley
Published in Electr. J. Combin. 17 (2010), paper #R43, 16 pp. • View PublicationBIB
Let M_n stand for the Plancherel measure on Y_n, the set of Young diagrams with n boxes. A recent result of Stanley (arXiv:0807.0383) says that for certain functions G defined on the set Y of all Young diagrams, the average of G with respect to M_n depends on n polynomially. We propose two other proofs of this result together with a generalization to the Jack deformation of the Plancherel measure.

Crossings and nestings in set partitions of classical types
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we investigate bijections on various classes of set partitions of classical types that preserve openers and closers. On the one hand we present bijections that interchange crossings and nestings. For types B and C, they generalize a construction by Kasraoui and Zeng for type A, whereas for type D, we were only able to construct a bijection between non-crossing and non-nesting set partitions. On the other hand we generalize a bijection to type B and C that interchanges the cardinality of the maximal crossing with the cardinality of the maximal nesting, as given by Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley and Yan for type A. Using a variant of this bijection, we also settle a conjecture by Soll and Welker concerning generalized type B triangulations and symmetric fans of Dyck paths.
