Betti numbers of Stanley--Reisner rings with pure resolutions
Let $Δ$ be simplicial complex and let $k[Δ]$ denote the Stanley--Reisner ring corresponding to $Δ$. Suppose that $k[Δ]$ has a pure free resolution. Then we describe the Betti numbers and the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicity of $k[Δ]$ in terms of the $h$--vector of $Δ$. As an application, we derive a linear equation system for the components of the $h$--vector of the clique complex of an arbitrary chordal graph.

Given a finite set of nonnegative integers A with no 3-term arithmetic progressions, the Stanley sequence generated by A, denoted S(A), is the infinite set created by beginning with A and then greedily including strictly larger integers which do not introduce a 3-term arithmetic progressions in S(A). Erdos et al. asked whether the counting function, S(A,x), of a Stanley sequence S(A) satisfies S(A,x)>x^{1/2-ε} for every ε>0 and x>x_0(ε,A). In this paper we answer this question in the affirmative; in fact, we prove the slightly stronger result that S(A,x)\geq (\sqrt{2}-ε)\sqrt{x} for x\geq x_0(ε,A).
$M$-Shellability of Discrete Polymatroids
In this note we show that every discrete polymatroid is $M$-shellable. This gives, in a partial case, a positive answer to a conjecture of Chari and improves a recent result of Schweig where he proved that the $h$-vector of a lattice path matroid satisfies a conjecture of Stanley.

The middle-levels graph $M_k$ ($0<k\in\mathbb{Z}$) has a dihedral quotient pseudograph $R_k$ whose vertices are the $k$-edge ordered trees $T$, each $T$ encoded as a $(2k+1)$-string $F(T)$ formed via $\rightarrow$DFS by: {\bf(i)} ($\leftarrow$BFS-assigned) Kierstead-Trotter lexical colors $0,\ldots,k$ for the descending nodes; {\bf(ii)} asterisks $*$ for the $k$ ascending edges. Two ways of corresponding a restricted-growth $k$-string $α$ to each $T$ exist, namely one Stanley's way and a novel way that assigns $F(T)$ to $α$ via nested substring-swaps. These swaps permit to sort $V(R_k)$ as an ordered tree that allows a lexical visualization of $M_k$ as well as the Hamilton cycles of $M_k$ constructed by P. Gregor, T. Mütze and J. Nummenpalo.
Bijective evaluation of the connection coefficients of the double coset algebra

This paper is devoted to the evaluation of the generating series of the connection coefficients of the double cosets of the hyperoctahedral group. Hanlon, Stanley, Stembridge (1992) showed that this series, indexed by a partition $ν$, gives the spectral distribution of some random real matrices that are of interest in random matrix theory. We provide an explicit evaluation of this series when $ν=(n)$ in terms of monomial symmetric functions. Our development relies on an interpretation of the connection coefficients in terms of locally orientable hypermaps and a new bijective construction between locally orientable partitioned hypermaps and some permuted forests.

We study the dependence of graded Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the base field. The examples we describe include bipartite ideals, Stanley--Reisner ideals of vertex-decomposable complexes and ideals with componentwise linear resolutions. We give a description of bipartite graphs and, using discrete Morse theory, provide a way of looking at the homology of arbitrary simplicial complexes through bipartite ideals. We also prove that the Betti table of a monomial ideal over the field of rational numbers can be obtained from the Betti table over any field by a sequence of consecutive cancellations.

The notion of exponential Dowling structures is introduced, generalizing Stanley's original theory of exponential structures. Enumerative theory is developed to determine the Möbius function of exponential Dowling structures, including a restriction of these structures to elements whose types satisfy a semigroup condition. Stanley's study of permutations associated with exponential structures leads to a similar vein of study for exponential Dowling structures. In particular, for the extended r-divisible partition lattice we show the Möbius function is, up to a sign, the number of permutations in the symmetric group on rn+k elements having descent set {r, 2r, ..., nr}. Using Wachs' original EL-labeling of the r-divisible partition lattice, the extended r-divisible partition lattice is shown to be EL-shellable.

Results of R. Stanley and M. Masuda completely characterize the h-vectors of simplicial posets whose order complexes are spheres. In this paper we examine the corresponding question in the case where the order complex is a ball. Using the face rings of these posets, we develop a series of new conditions on their h-vectors. We also present new methods for constructing poset balls with specific h-vectors. These results allow us to give a complete characterization of the h-vectors of simplicial poset balls up through dimension six.

We introduce the short toric polynomial associated to a graded Eulerian poset. This polynomial contains the same information as the two toric polynomials introduced by Stanley, but allows different algebraic manipulations. The intertwined recurrence defining Stanley's toric polynomials may be replaced by a single recurrence, in which the degree of the discarded terms is independent of the rank. A short toric variant of the formula by Bayer and Ehrenborg, expressing the toric $h$-vector in terms of the $cd$-index, may be stated in a rank-independent form, and it may be shown using weighted lattice path enumeration and the reflection principle. We use our techniques to derive a formula expressing the toric $h$-vector of a dual simplicial Eulerian poset in terms of its $f$-vector. This formula implies Gessel's formula for the toric $h$-vector of a cube, and may be used to prove that the nonnegativity of the toric $h$-vector of a simple polytope is a consequence of the Generalized Lower Bound Theorem holding for simplicial polytopes.

Stanley (1986) showed how a finite partially ordered set gives rise to two polytopes, called the order polytope and chain polytope, which have the same Ehrhart polynomial despite being quite different combinatorially. We generalize his result to a wider family of polytopes constructed from a poset P with integers assigned to some of its elements.
Through this construction, we explain combinatorially the relationship between the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes (1950) and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann polytopes (2010), which arise in the representation theory of the special linear Lie algebra. We then use the generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes of Berenstein and Zelevinsky (1989) to propose conjectural analogues of the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann polytopes corresponding to the symplectic and odd orthogonal Lie algebras.
On the structure of the h-vector of a paving matroid
We give two proofs that the $h$-vector of any paving matroid is a pure O-sequence, thus answering in the affirmative a conjecture made by R. Stanley, for this particular class of matroids. We also investigate the problem of obtaining good lower bounds for the number of bases of a paving matroid given its rank and number of elements.
Extension of Stanley's Theorem for Partitions
In this paper we present an extension of Stanley's theorem related to partitions of positive integers. Stanley's theorem states a relation between "the sum of the numbers of distinct members in the partitions of a positive integer $n$" and "the total number of 1's that occur in the partitions of $n$". Our generalization states a similar relation between "the sum of the numbers of distinct members in the partitions of $n$" and the total number of 2's or 3's or any general $k$ that occur in the partitions of $n$ and the subsequent integers. We also apply this result to obtain an array of interesting corollaries, including alternate proofs and analogues of some of the very well-known results in the theory of partitions. We extend Ramanujan's results on congruence behavior of the 'number of partition' function $p(n)$ to get analogous results for the 'number of occurrences of an element $k$ in partitions of $n$'. Moreover, we present an alternate proof of Ramanujan's results in this paper.
Cubical subdivisions and local $h$-vectors

Face numbers of triangulations of simplicial complexes were studied by Stanley by use of his concept of a local $h$-vector. It is shown that a parallel theory exists for cubical subdivisions of cubical complexes, in which the role of the $h$-vector of a simplicial complex is played by the (short or long) cubical $h$-vector of a cubical complex, defined by Adin, and the role of the local $h$-vector of a triangulation of a simplex is played by the (short or long) cubical local $h$-vector of a cubical subdivision of a cube. The cubical local $h$-vectors are defined in this paper and are shown to share many of the properties of their simplicial counterparts. Generalizations to subdivisions of locally Eulerian posets are also discussed.

On Stanley's Partition Function
Stanley defined a partition function t(n) as the number of partitions $λ$ of n such that the number of odd parts of $λ$ is congruent to the number of odd parts of the conjugate partition $λ'$ modulo 4. We show that t(n) equals the number of partitions of n with an even number of hooks of even length. We derive a closed-form formula for the generating function for the numbers p(n)-t(n). As a consequence, we see that t(n) has the same parity as the ordinary partition function p(n) for any n. A simple combinatorial explanation of this fact is also provided.

Pure O-sequences and matroid h-vectors

We study Stanley's long-standing conjecture that the h-vectors of matroid simplicial complexes are pure O-sequences. Our method consists of a new and more abstract approach, which shifts the focus from working on constructing suitable artinian level monomial ideals, as often done in the past, to the study of properties of pure O-sequences. We propose a conjecture on pure O-sequences and settle it in small socle degrees. This allows us to prove Stanley's conjecture for all matroids of rank 3. At the end of the paper, using our method, we discuss a first possible approach to Stanley's conjecture in full generality. Our technical work on pure O-sequences also uses very recent results of the third author and collaborators.

Stanley has conjectured that the h-vector of a matroid complex is a pure O-sequence. We will prove this for cotransversal matroids by using generalized permutohedra. We construct a bijection between lattice points inside a r-dimensional convex polytope and bases of a rank r transversal matroid.
