For an arbitrary finite permutation group $G$, subgroup of the symmetric group $S_\ell$, we determine the permutations involving only members of $G$ as $\ell$-patterns, i.e., avoiding all patterns in the set $S_\ell \setminus G$. The set of all $n$-permutations with this property constitutes again a permutation group. We consequently refine and strengthen the classification of sets of permutations closed under pattern involvement and composition that is due to Atkinson and Beals.

S.~Elnitsky (1997) gave an elegant bijection between rhombic tilings of $2n$-gons and commutation classes of reduced words in the symmetric group on $n$ letters. P.~Magyar (1998) found an important construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties introduced by H.C.~Hansen (1973) and M.~Demazure (1974). We explain a natural connection between S.~Elnitsky's and P.~Magyar's results. This suggests using tilings to encapsulate Bott-Samelson data (in type $A$). It also indicates a geometric perspective on S.~Elnitsky's combinatorics. We also extend this construction by assigning desingularizations to the zonotopal tilings considered by B.~Tenner (2006).

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for that the support $τ$-tilting poset of a finite dimensional algebra is isomorphic to the poset of symmetric group with weak order. Moreover we show that there are infinitely many finite dimensional algebras whose support $τ$-tilting posets are isomorphic to the poset of symmetric group with weak order.

There is a connection between permutation groups and permutation patterns: for any subgroup $G$ of the symmetric group $S_\ell$ and for any $n \geq \ell$, the set of $n$-permutations involving only members of $G$ as $\ell$-patterns is a subgroup of $S_n$. Making use of the monotone Galois connection induced by the pattern avoidance relation, we characterize the permutation groups that arise via pattern avoidance as automorphism groups of relations of a certain special form. We also investigate a related monotone Galois connection for permutation groups and describe its closed sets and kernels as automorphism groups of relations.
Recent results on permutations without short cycles
The density, denoted by $κ(n,r)$, of permutations having no cycles of length less than $r+1$ in a symmetric group $\mathrm{S}_n$ is explored. New asymptotic formulas for $κ(n,r)$ are obtained using the saddle-point method when $5\leq r< n$ and $n\to\infty$.

Group algebras of permutations have proved highly useful in solving a number of problems in large N gauge theories. I review the use of permutations in classifying gauge invariants in one-matrix and multi-matrix models and computing their correlators. These methods are also applicable to tensor models and have revealed a link between tensor models and the counting of branched covers. The key idea is to parametrize $U(N)$ gauge invariants using permutations, subject to equivalences. Correlators are related to group theoretic properties of these equivalence classes. Fourier transformation on symmetric groups by means of representation theory offers nice bases of functions on these equivalence classes. This has applications in AdS/CFT in identifying CFT duals of giant gravitons and their perturbations. It has also lead to general results on quiver gauge theory correlators, uncovering links to two dimensional topological field theory and the combinatorics of trace monoids.

We give a closed formula for the number of partitions $λ$ of $n$ such that the corresponding irreducible representation $V_λ$ of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant. We determine how many of these partitions are self-conjugate and how many are hooks. This is achieved by characterizing the $2$-core towers of such partitions. We also obtain a formula for the number of partitions of $n$ such that the associated permutation representation of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant.

An \emph{$(r,k)$-parking function} of length $n$ may be defined as a sequence $(a_1,\dots,a_n)$ of positive integers whose increasing rearrangement $b_1\leq\cdots\leq b_n$ satisfies $b_i\leq k+(i-1)r$. The case $r=k=1$ corresponds to ordinary parking functions. We develop numerous properties of $(r,k)$-parking functions. In particular, if $F_n^{(r,k)}$ denotes the Frobenius characteristic of the action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the set of all $(r,k)$-parking functions of length $n$, then we find a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the power series $\left( \sum_{n\geq 0}F_n^{(r,1)}t^n\right)^k$ for any $k\in \mathbb{Z}$. When $k>0$, this power series is just $\sum_{n\geq 0} F_n^{(r,k)} t^n$; when $k<0$, we obtain a dual to $(r,k)$-parking functions. We also give a $q$-analogue of this result. For fixed $r$, we can use the symmetric functions $F_n^{(r,1)}$ to define a multiplicative basis for the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions. We investigate some of the properties of this basis.

We establish a relation between the Sprague-Grundy function $\text{sg}$ of a $p$-saturation of Welter's game and the degrees of the ordinary irreducible representations of symmetric groups. In this game, a position can be viewed as a partition $λ$. Let $ρ^λ$ be the irreducible representation of $\text{Sym}(|λ|)$ indexed by $λ$. For every prime $p$, we show the following results: (1) the degree of $ρ^λ$ is prime to $p$ if and only if $\text{sg}(λ) = |λ|$; (2) the restriction of $ρ^λ$ to $\text{Sym}(\text{sg}(λ))$ has an irreducible component with degree prime to $p$. Further, for every integer $p$ greater than 1, we obtain an explicit formula for $\text{sg}(λ)$.

We study for each $n$ a one-parameter family of complex-valued measures on the symmetric group $S_n$, which interpolate the probability of a monic, degree $n$, square-free polynomial in $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ having a given factorization type. For a fixed factorization type, indexed by a partition $λ$ of $n$, the measure is known to be a Laurent polynomial. We express the coefficients of this polynomial in terms of characters associated to $S_n$-subrepresentations of the cohomology of the pure braid group $H^{\bullet}(P_n, \mathbb{Q})$. We deduce that the splitting measures for all parameter values $z= -\frac{1}{m}$ (resp. $z= \frac{1}{m}$), after rescaling, are characters of $S_n$-representations (resp. virtual $S_n$-representations.)
The tropicalization of the moduli space of curves II: Topology and applications
We study the topology of the tropical moduli space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with n marked points in which the bounded edges have total length 1, and prove that it is highly connected. Using the identification of this space with the dual complex of the boundary in the moduli space of stable algebraic curves, we give a simple expression for the top weight cohomology of M_{1,n} as a representation of the symmetric group and describe an explicit dual basis in homology consisting of abelian cycles for the pure mapping class group.
On chromatic functors and stable partitions of graphs

The chromatic functor of a simple graph is a functorization of the chromatic polynomial. M. Yoshinaga showed in \cite{Yoshinaga2015} that two finite graphs have isomorphic chromatic functors if and only if they have the same chromatic polynomial. The key ingredient in the proof is the use of stable partitions of graphs. The latter is shown to be closely related to chromatic functors. In this note, we further investigate some interesting properties of chromatic functors associated to simple graphs using stable partitions. Our first result is the determination of the group of natural automorphisms of the chromatic functor, which is in general a larger group than the automorphism group of the graph. The second result is that the composition of the chromatic functor associated to a finite graph restricted to the category $\mathrm{FI}$ of finite sets and injections with the free functor into the category of complex vector spaces yields a consistent sequence of representations of symmetric groups which is representation stable in the sense of Church-Farb \cite{Church2013}.

Recently Brosnan and Chow have proven a conjecture of Shareshian and Wachs describing a representation of the symmetric group on the cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$. A key component of their argument is that the Betti numbers of regular Hessenberg varieties for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ are palindromic. In this paper, we extend this result to all reductive algebraic groups, proving that the Betti numbers of regular Hessenberg varieties are palindromic.

We establish, for the character table of the symmetric group, the positivity of the row sums indexed by irreducible characters, when restricted to various subsets of the conjugacy classes. A notable example is that of partitions with all parts odd. More generally, we study representations related to the conjugacy action of the symmetric group. These arise as sums of submodules induced from centraliser subgroups, and their Frobenius characteristics have elegant descriptions, often as a multiplicity-free sum of power-sum symmetric functions. We describe a general framework in which such representations, and consequently such linear combinations of power-sums, can be analysed. The conjugacy action for the symmetric group, and more generally for a large class of groups, is known to contain every irreducible. We find other representations of dimension $n!$ with this property, including a twisted analogue of the conjugacy action.
An easy upper bound for Ramsey numbers
It is observed that the conjugacy growth series of the infinite finitary symmetric group with respect to the generating set of transpositions is the generating series of the partition function. Other conjugacy growth series are computed, for other generating sets, for restricted permutational wreath products of finite groups by the finitary symmetric group, and for alternating groups. Similar methods are used to compute usual growth polynomials and conjugacy growth polynomials for finite symmetric groups and alternating groups, with respect to various generating sets of transpositions. Computations suggest a class of finite graphs, that we call partition-complete, which generalizes the class of semi-hamiltonian graphs, and which is of independent interest. Numerical evidences indicate that the coefficients of a series related to the finitary alternating group seem to satisfy congruence relations reminiscent of Ramanujan's congruences for the partition function.

In [E. Tsukerman and L. Williams, {\em Bruhat Interval Polytopes}, Advances in Mathematics, 285 (2015), 766-810] it is shown that every Bruhat interval of the symmetric group satisfies the so-called generalized lifting property. In this paper we show that a Coxeter group satisfies this property if and only if it is finite and simply-laced.
Structure coefficients for Jack characters: approximate factorization property
Jack characters are a generalization of the characters of the symmetric groups; a generalization that is related to Jack symmetric functions. We investigate the structure coefficients for Jack characters; they are a generalization of the connection coefficients for the symmetric groups. More specifically, we study the cumulants which measure the discrepancy between these structure coefficients and the simplistic structure coefficients related to the disjoint product. We show that Jack characters satisfy approximate factorization property: their cumulants are of very small degree and the character related to a given partition is approximately equal to the product of the characters related to its parts. This result will play a key role in the proof of Gaussianity of fluctuations for a class of random Young diagrams related to the Jack polynomials.
Products of abstract polytopes

Given two convex polytopes, the join, the cartesian product and the direct sum of them are well understood. In this paper we extend these three kinds of products to abstract polytopes and introduce a new product, called the topological product, which also arises in a natural way.
We show that these products have unique prime factorization theorems.
We use this to compute the automorphism group of a product in terms of the automorphism groups of the factors and show that (non trivial) products are almost never regular or two-orbit polytopes. We finish the paper by studying the monodromy group of a product, show that such a group is always an extension of a symmetric group, and give some examples in which this extension splits.

For a subgroup $L$ of the symmetric group $S_\ell$, we determine the minimal base size of $GL_d(q)\wr L$ acting on $V_d(q)^\ell$ as an imprimitive linear group. This is achieved by computing the number of orbits of $GL_d(q)$ on spanning $m$-tuples, which turns out to be the number of $d$-dimensional subspaces of $V_m(q)$. We then use these results to prove that for certain families of subgroups $L$, the affine groups whose stabilisers are large subgroups of $GL_d(q)\wr L$ satisfy a conjecture of Pyber concerning bases.

Using the standard Coxeter presentation for the symmetric group $S_n$, two reduced expressions for the same group element are said to be commutation equivalent if we can obtain one expression from the other by applying a finite sequence of commutations. The resulting equivalence classes of reduced expressions are called commutation classes. How many commutation classes are there for the longest element in $S_n$?
