Alcove path and Nichols-Woronowicz model of the equivariant $K$-theory of generalized flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fomin and Kirillov initiated a line of research into the realization of the cohomology and $K$-theory of generalized flag varieties $G/B$ as commutative subalgebras of certain noncommutative algebras. This approach has several advantages, which we discuss. This paper contains the most comprehensive result in a series of papers related to the mentioned line of research. More precisely, we give a model for the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of a generalized flag variety $K_T(G/B)$ in terms of a certain braided Hopf algebra called the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra. Our model is based on the Chevalley-type multiplication formula for $K_T(G/B)$ due to the first author and Postnikov; this formula is stated using certain operators defined in terms of so-called alcove paths (and the corresponding affine Weyl group). Our model is derived using a type-independent and concise approach.

A generalized Cartan decomposition for the double coset space U(n_1) x U(n_2) x U(n_3)) U(n) / U(p) x U(q)

Motivated by recent developments on visible actions on complex manifolds, we raise a question whether or not the multiplication of three subgroups $L$, $G'$ and $H$ surjects a Lie group $G$ in the setting that $G/H$ carries a complex structure and contains $G'/G' \cap H$ as a totally real submanifold. Particularly important cases are when $G/L$ and $G/H$ are generalized flag varieties, and we classify pairs of Levi subgroups $(L, H)$ such that $L G' H = G$, or equivalently, the real generalized flag variety $G'/H \cap G'$ meets every $L$-orbit on the complex generalized flag variety $G/H$ in the setting that $(G, G') = (U(n), O(n))$. For such pairs $(L, H)$, we introduce a \textit{herringbone stitch} method to find a generalized Cartan decomposition for the double coset space $L \backslash G/H$, for which there has been no general theory in the non-symmetric case. Our geometric results provides a unified proof of various multiplicity-free theorems in representation theory of general linear groups.

Toric geometry of cuts and splits
Published • View PublicationBIB
Associated to any graph is a toric ideal whose generators record relations among the cuts of the graph. We study these ideals and the geometry of the corresponding toric varieties. Our theorems and conjectures relate the combinatorial structure of the graph and the corresponding cut polytope to algebraic properties of the ideal. Cut ideals generalize toric ideals arising in phylogenetics and the study of contingency tables.

Formal Markoff maps are positive
This note defines a family of Laurent polynomials (indexed in the rational projective line) which generalize the Markoff numbers and relate to the character variety of the one-cusped torus. We describe which monomials appear in each polynomial and prove all the coefficients are positive integers. We also conjecture a generalization of that positivity result.

Toric vector bundles, branched covers of fans, and the resolution property
Published in J. Algebraic Geom. 18 (2009), 1--36. • View PublicationBIB
We associate to each toric vector bundle on a toric variety X(Delta) a "branched cover" of the fan Delta together with a piecewise-linear function on the branched cover. This construction generalizes the usual correspondence between toric Cartier divisors and piecewise-linear functions. We apply this combinatorial geometric technique to investigate the existence of resolutions of coherent sheaves by vector bundles, using singular nonquasiprojective toric threefolds as a testing ground. Our main new result is the construction of complete toric threefolds that have no nontrivial toric vector bundles of rank less than or equal to three. The combinatorial geometric sections of the paper, which develop a theory of cone complexes and their branched covers, can be read independently.

A tropical approach to secant dimensions
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 212(2):349--363, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
Tropical geometry yields good lower bounds, in terms of certain combinatorial-polyhedral optimisation problems, on the dimensions of secant varieties. In particular, it gives an attractive pictorial proof of the theorem of Hirschowitz that all Veronese embeddings of the projective plane except for the quadratic one and the quartic one are non-defective; this proof might be generalisable to cover all Veronese embeddings, whose secant dimensions are known from the ground-breaking but difficult work of Alexander and Hirschowitz. Also, the non-defectiveness of certain Segre embeddings is proved, which cannot be proved with the rook covering argument already known in the literature. Short self-contained introductions to secant varieties and the required tropical geometry are included.

Permutation representations on Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper defines and studies permutation representations on the equivariant cohomology of Schubert varieties, as representations both over C and over C[t_1, t_2,...,t_n]. We show these group actions are the same as an action of simple transpositions studied geometrically by M. Brion, and give topological meaning to the divided difference operators studied by Berstein-Gelfand-Gelfand, Demazure, Kostant-Kumar, and others. We analyze these representations using the combinatorial approach to equivariant cohomology introduced by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. We find that each permutation representation on equivariant cohomology produces a representation on ordinary cohomology that is trivial, though the equivariant representation is not.

Combinatorial images of sets of reals and semifilter trichotomy
Published in Journal of Symbolic Logic 73 (2008), 1278-1288 • View PublicationBIB
Using a dictionary translating a variety of classical and modern covering properties into combinatorial properties of continuous images, we get a simple way to understand the interrelations between these properties in ZFC and in the realm of the trichotomy axiom for upward closed families of sets of natural numbers. While it is now known that the answer to the Hurewicz 1927 problem is positive, it is shown here that semifilter trichotomy implies a negative answer to a slightly weaker form of this problem.

Additivity numbers of covering properties
Published in Selection Principles and Covering Properties in Topology (L. Kovinac, editor), Quaderni di Matematica 18, Seconda Universita di Napoli, Caserta 2006, 245-282 • Search Publication
The_additivity_number_ of a topological property (relative to a given space) is the minimal number of subspaces with this property whose union does not have the property. The most well-known case is where this number is greater than Aleph_0, i.e. the property is sigma-additive. We give a rather complete survey of the known results about the additivity numbers of a variety of topological covering properties, including those appearing in the Scheepers diagram (which contains, among others, the classical properties of Menger, Hurewicz, Rothberger, and Gerlits-Nagy). Some of the results proved here were not published beforehand, and many open problems are posed.

Tropical Invariants from the Secondary Fan
Published in Adv. Geom. 9 (2009), no. 2, 153--180 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider weighted counts of tropical plane curves of particular combinatorial type through a certain number of generic points. We give a criterion, derived from tropical intersection theory on the secondary fan, for a weighted count to give a number invariant of the position of the points. By computing a certain intersection multiplicity, we show how Mikhalkin's approach to computing Gromov-Witten invariants fits into our approach. This begins to address a question raised by Dickenstein, Feichtner, and Sturmfels. We also give a geometric interpretation of the numbers we produce involving Chow quotients, and provide a counterexample showing that the tropical Severi variety is not always supported on the secondary fan. This paper is a revision of the preprint, "The Tropical Degree of Cones in the Secondary Fan."

Elementary notions of lattice trigonometry

In this paper we study properties of lattice trigonometric functions of lattice angles in lattice geometry. We introduce the definition of sums of lattice angles and establish a necessary and sufficient condition for three angles to be the angles of some lattice triangle in terms of lattice tangents. This condition is a version of the Euclidean condition: three angles are the angles of some triangle iff their sum equals π. Further we find the necessary and sufficient condition for an ordered n-tuple of angles to be the angles of some convex lattice polygon. In conclusion we show applications to theory of complex projective toric varieties, and a list of unsolved problems and questions.

Uniform formulae for coefficients of meromorphic functions in two variables. Part I
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 20, 811-828, 2006 • View PublicationBIB
Uniform asymptotic formulae for arrays of complex numbers of the form $(f_{r,s})$, with $r$ and $s$ nonnegative integers, are provided as $r$ and $s$ converge to infinity at a comparable rate. Our analysis is restricted to the case in which the generating function $F(z,w):=\sum f_{r,s} z^r w^s$ is meromorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. We provide uniform asymptotic formulae for the coefficients $f_{r,s}$ along directions in the $(r,s)$-lattice determined by regular points of the singular variety of $F$. Our main result derives from the analysis of a one dimensional parameter-varying integral describing the asymptotic behavior of $f_{r,s}$. We specifically consider the case in which the phase term of this integral has a unique stationary point, however, allowing the possibility that one or more stationary points of the amplitude term coalesce with this. Our results find direct application in certain problems associated to the Lagrange inversion formula as well as bivariate generating functions of the form $v(z)/(1-w\cdot u(z))$.

Forest-like permutations
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 11 (2007) 335--354 • View PublicationBIB
Given a permutation $π\in \Sn\_n$, construct a graph $G\_π$ on the vertex set $\{1,2, ..., n\}$ by joining $i$ to $j$ if (i) $i<j$ and $π(i)<π(j)$ and (ii) there is no $k$ such that $i < k < j$ and $π(i)<π(k)<π(j)$. We say that $π$ is forest-like if $G\_π$ is a forest. We first characterize forest-like permutations in terms of pattern avoidance, and then by a certain linear map being onto. Thanks to recent results of Woo and Yong, this shows that forest-like permutations characterize Schubert varieties which are locally factorial. Thus forest-like permutations generalize smooth permutations (corresponding to smooth Schubert varieties). We compute the generating function of forest-like permutations. As in the smooth case, it turns out to be algebraic. We then adapt our method to count permutations for which $G\_π$ is a tree, or a path, and recover the known generating function of smooth permutations.

Governing Singularities of Schubert Varieties
Published in J. Algebra, Vol. 320 (2008), No. 2, p. 495--520 • View PublicationBIB
We present a combinatorial and computational commutative algebra methodology for studying singularities of Schubert varieties of flag manifolds. We define the combinatorial notion of *interval pattern avoidance*. For "reasonable" invariants P of singularities, we geometrically prove that this governs (1) the P-locus of a Schubert variety, and (2) which Schubert varieties are globally not P. The prototypical case is P="singular"; classical pattern avoidance applies admirably for this choice [Lakshmibai-Sandhya'90], but is insufficient in general. Our approach is analyzed for some common invariants, including Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, multiplicity, factoriality, and Gorensteinness, extending [Woo-Yong'05]; the description of the singular locus (which was independently proved by [Billey-Warrington '03], [Cortez '03], [Kassel-Lascoux-Reutenauer'03], [Manivel'01]) is also thus reinterpreted. Our methods are amenable to computer experimentation, based on computing with *Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals* (a class of generalized determinantal ideals) using Macaulay 2. This feature is supplemented by a collection of open problems and conjectures.

The Horn recursion for Schur P- and Q- functions: Extended Abstract
A consequence of work of Klyachko and of Knutson-Tao is the Horn recursion to determine when a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient is non-zero. Briefly, a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient is non-zero if and only if it satisfies a collection of Horn inequalities which are indexed by smaller non-zero Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. There are similar Littlewood-Richardson numbers for Schur P- and Q- functions. Using a mixture of combinatorics of root systems, combinatorial linear algebra in Lie algebras, and the geometry of certain cominuscule flag varieties, we give Horn recursions to determine when these other Littlewood-Richardson numbers are non-zero. Our inequalities come from the usual Littlewood-Richardson numbers, and while we give two very different Horn recursions, they have the same sets of solutions. Another combinatorial by-product of this work is a new Horn-type recursion for the usual Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Multinets, resonance varieties, and pencils of plane curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that a line arrangement in the complex projective plane supports a nontrivial resonance variety if and only if it is the underlying arrangement of a "multinet," a multi-arrangement with a partition into three or more equinumerous classes which have equal multiplicities at each inter-class intersection point, and satisfy a connectivity condition. We also prove that this combinatorial structure is equivalent to the existence of a pencil of plane curves, also satisfying a connectivity condition, whose singular fibers include at least three products of lines, which comprise the arrangement. We derive numerical conditions which impose restrictions on the number of classes, and the line and point multiplicities that can appear in multinets, and allow us to detect whether the associated pencils yield nonlinear fiberings of the complement.
Coincidences among skew Schur functions
Published in Adv. Math. 216:118--152 (2007) • View PublicationBIB
New sufficient conditions and necessary conditions are developed for two skew diagrams to give rise to the same skew Schur function. The sufficient conditions come from a variety of new operations related to ribbons (also known as border strips or rim hooks). The necessary conditions relate to the extent of overlap among the rows or among the columns of the skew diagram.

Combinatorial aspects of nodal curves
Published in `Le Matematiche'', vol. LXI (2006), Fascicolo I, pp. 109-141 • Search Publication
To any nodal curve $C$ is associated the degree class group, a combinatorial invariant which plays an important role in the compactification of the generalised Jacobian of $C$ and in the construction of the Néron model of the Picard variety of families of curves having $C$ as special fibre. In this paper we study this invariant. More precisely, we construct a wide family of graphs having cyclic degree class group and we provide a recursive formula for the cardinality of the degree class group of the members of this family. Moreover, we analyse the behaviour of the degree class group under standard geometrical operations on the curve, such as the blow up and the normalisation of a node.

Changes of variables in ELSV-type formulas
Published in Michigan Mathematical Journal 55 (2007), no. 1, pp. 209 - 228 • View PublicationBIB
In [5] I.P. Goulden, D.M. Jackson, and R. Vakil formulated a conjecture relating certain Hurwitz numbers (enumerating ramified coverings of the sphere) to the intersection theory on a conjectural Picard variety. We are going to use their formula to study the intersection theory on this variety (if it is ever to be constructed) by methods close to those of M. Kazarian and S. Lando in [7]. In particular, we prove a Witten-Kontsevich-type theorem relating the intersection theory and integrable hierarchies. We also extend the results of [7] to include the Hodge integrals over the moduli spaces, involving one lambda-class.
