Schubert Classes in the Equivariant K-Theory and Equivariant Cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Ghorpade-Raghavan, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Lagrangian Grassmannian.

The Automorphism Group of a Finite p-Group is Almost Always a p-Group
Published in Journal of Algebra 312(2007) 294-329 • View PublicationBIB
Many common finite p-groups admit automorphisms of order coprime to p, and when p is odd, it is reasonably difficult to find finite p-groups whose automorphism group is a p-group. Yet the goal of this paper is to prove that the automorphism group of a finite p-group is almost always a p-group. The asymptotics in our theorem involve fixing any two of the following parameters and letting the third go to infinity: the lower p-length, the number of generators, and p. The proof of this theorem depends on a variety of topics: counting subgroups of a p-group; analyzing the lower p-series of a free group via its connection with the free Lie algebra; counting submodules of a module via Hall polynomials; and using numerical estimates on Gaussian coefficients.

Motivic decomposition of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety
Let A and B be two central simple algebras of a prime degree n over a field F generating the same subgroup in the Brauer group. We show that the Chow motive of a Severi-Brauer variety SB(A) is a direct summand of the motive of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety SB_d(B) if and only if [A]=d[B] or [A]=-d[B] in the Brauer group. The proof uses methods of Schubert calculus and combinatorial properties of Young tableaux, e.g., Robinson-Schensted correspondence.

Hessenberg varieties are not pure dimensional
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a family of subvarieties of the flag variety defined by certain linear conditions, called Hessenberg varieties. We compare them to Schubert varieties. We prove that some Schubert varieties can be realized as Hessenberg varieties and vice versa. Our proof explicitly identifies these Schubert varieties by their permutation and computes their dimension. We use this to answer an open question by proving that Hessenberg varieties are not always pure dimensional. We give examples that neither semisimple nor nilpotent Hessenberg varieties need be pure; the latter are connected, non-pure-dimensional Hessenberg varieties. Our methods require us to generalize the definition of Hessenberg varieties.

Twenty combinatorial examples of asymptotics derived from multivariate generating functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\{a_\rr : \rr \in (\Z^+)^d \}$ be a $d$-dimensional array of numbers, for which the generating function $F(\zz) := \sum_\rr a_\rr \zz^\rr$ is meromorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. For example, $F$ may be a rational multivariate generating function. We discuss recent results that allow the effective computation of asymptotic expansions for the coefficients of $F$. Our purpose is to illustrate the use of these techniques on a variety of problems of combinatorial interest. The survey begins by summarizing previous work on the asymptotics of univariate and multivariate generating functions. Next we describe the Morse-theoretic underpinnings of some new asymptotic techniques. We then quote and summarize these results in such a way that only elementary analyses are needed to check hypotheses and carry out computations. The remainder of the survey focuses on combinatorial applications, such as enumeration of words with forbidden substrings, edges and cycles in graphs, polyominoes, and descents in permutations. After the individual examples, we discuss three broad classes of examples, namely functions derived via the transfer matrix method, those derived via the kernel method, and those derived via the method of Lagrange inversion. These methods have the property that generating functions derived from them are amenable to our asymptotic analyses, and we describe further machinery that facilitates computations for these classes of examples.

Projective Q-factorial toric varieties covered by lines
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of this paper is a structural theorem for projective Q-factorial toric varieties X in P^N, covered by lines. We prove that there exists a toric fibration f: X -> Z, locally trivial in the Zariski topology, with fiber a product of projective joins. All lines in X intersecting the open subset isomorphic to the torus, are contained in some fiber of f. This characterization has a geometrical application to dual defective toric varieties, and a combinatorial application to discriminants of lattice subsets. We prove that X has positive dual defect if and only if it has an elementary extremal contraction of fiber type, whose general fiber is a projective join with dual defect bigger than its codimension in X. Turning to combinatorics, we characterize lattice subsets A with discriminant D_A equal to one, under suitable assumptions on the polytope Conv(A).

From Orbital Varieties to Alternating Sign Matrices
We study a one-parameter family of vector-valued polynomials associated to each simple Lie algebra. When this parameter $q$ equals -1 one recovers Joseph polynomials, whereas at $q$ cubic root of unity one obtains ground state eigenvectors of some integrable models with boundary conditions depending on the Lie algebra; in particular, we find that the sum of its entries is related to numbers of Alternating Sign Matrices and/or Plane Partitions in various symmetry classes.

Nice Initial Complexes of Some Classical Ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a survey article on Gorenstein initial complexes of extensively studied ideals in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. These include defining ideals of Segre and Veronese varieties, toric deformations of flag varieties known as Hibi ideals, determinantal ideals of generic matrices of indeterminates, and ideals generated by Pfaffians of generic skew symmetric matrices. We give a summary of recent work on the construction of squarefree Gorenstein initial ideals of these ideals when the ideals are themselves Gorenstein. We also present our own independent results for the Segre, Veronese, and some determinantal cases.

Schubert Classes in the Equivariant K-Theory and Equivariant Cohomology of the Grassmannian
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Kodiyalam-Raghavan and Kreiman-Lakshmibai, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Grassmannian.

Local Properties of Richardson Varieties in the Grassmannian via a Bounded Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Correspondence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit Grobner basis for the ideal of the tangent cone at any T-fixed point of a Richardson variety in the Grassmannian, thus generalizing a result of Kodiyalam-Raghavan and Kreiman-Lakshmibai. Our proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, which we call the bounded RSK (BRSK). We use the Grobner basis result to deduce a formula which computes the multiplicity of the Richardson variety at any T-fixed point by counting families of nonintersecting lattice paths, thus generalizing a result first proved by Krattehthaler.

Matroids and Geometric Invariant Theory of torus actions on flag spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We apply a theorem of Gel'fand, Goresky, MacPherson, and Serganova about matroid polytopes to study semistability of partial flags relative to a T-linearized ample line bundle of a flag space F = SL(n)/P where T is a maximal torus in SL(n) and P is a parabolic subgroup containing T. We find that the semistable points are all detected by invariant sections of degree one regardless of the line bundle or linearization thereof, provided there exists at least one nonzero invariant section of degree one. In this case the degree one sections are sufficient to give a well defined map from the G.I.T. quotient F//T to projective space. Additionally, we show that the closure of any T-orbit in SL(n)/P is a projectively normal toric variety for any projective embedding of SL(n)/P.

Remarks on the combinatorial intersection cohomology of fans
Published • View PublicationBIB
We review the theory of combinatorial intersection cohomology of fans developed by Barthel-Brasselet-Fieseler-Kaup, Bressler-Lunts, and Karu. This theory gives a substitute for the intersection cohomology of toric varieties which has all the expected formal properties but makes sense even for non-rational fans, which do not define a toric variety. As a result, a number of interesting results on the toric $g$ and $h$ polynomials have been extended from rational polytopes to general polytopes. We present explicit complexes computing the combinatorial IH in degrees one and two; the degree two complex gives the rigidity complex previously used by Kalai to study $g_2$. We present several new results which follow from these methods, as well as previously unpublished proofs of Kalai that $g_k(P) = 0$ implies $g_k(P^*) = 0$ and $g_{k+1}(P) = 0$.

Modular forms for the even unimodular lattice of signature (2,10)
Published • View PublicationBIB
Some years ago, Borcherds described in [Bo1] two methods for constructing modular forms on modular varieties related to the orthogonal group $Ø(2,n)$. They are the so called Borcherds' additive and multiplicative lifting. The multiplicative lifting has been used by Borcherds himself and other authors to construct modular forms with known vanishing locus and interesting properties. The additive lifting has been used to construct explicit maps from some modular varieties $Ø(2,n)$. In this paper we try a more systematic treatment in certain level 2 cases giving connections with Kondo's works

Classification of pseudo-symmetric simplicial reflexive polytopes
Published in Contemporary Mathematics 423 (2007), 269-282 • View PublicationBIB
A reflexive polytope, respectively its associated Gorenstein toric Fano variety, is called pseudo-symmetric, if the polytope has a centrally symmetric pair of facets. Here we present a complete classification of pseudo-symmetric simplicial reflexive polytopes together with some applications. This generalizes a result of Ewald on pseudo-symmetric nonsingular toric Fano varieties.

Betti numbers of holomorphic symplectic quotients via arithmetic Fourier transform
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Fourier transform technique is introduced for counting the number of solutions of holomorphic moment map equations over a finite field. This in turn gives information on Betti numbers of holomorphic symplectic quotients. As a consequence simple unified proofs are obtained for formulas of Poincare polynomials of toric hyperkahler varieties, Poincare polynomials of Hilbert schemes of points and twisted ADHM spaces of instantons on C^2 and Poincare polynomials of all Nakajima quiver varieties. As an application, a proof of a conjecture of Kac on the number of absolutely indecomposable representations of a quiver is announced.

A Combinatorial Study on Quiver Varieties
Published in SIGMA 13 (2017), 052, 28 pages • View PublicationBIB
This is an expository paper which has two parts. In the first part, we study quiver varieties of affine $A$-type from a combinatorial point of view. We present a combinatorial method for obtaining a closed formula for the generating function of Poincaré polynomials of quiver varieties in rank 1 cases. Our main tools are cores and quotients of Young diagrams. In the second part, we give a brief survey of instanton counting in physics, where quiver varieties appear as moduli spaces of instantons, focusing on its combinatorial aspects.
Tropical Discriminants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tropical geometry is used to develop a new approach to the theory of discriminants and resultants in the sense of Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. The tropical A-discriminant, which is the tropicalization of the dual variety of the projective toric variety given by an integer matrix A, is shown to coincide with the Minkowski sum of the row space of A and of the tropicalization of the kernel of A. This leads to an explicit positive formula for the extreme monomials of any A-discriminant, without any smoothness assumption.

Fiber fans and toric quotients

The GIT chamber decomposition arising from a subtorus action on a quasiprojective toric variety is a polyhedral complex. Denote by Sigma the fan that is the cone over the polyhedral complex. In this paper we show that the toric variety defined by the fan Sigma is the normalization of the toric Chow quotient of a closely related affine toric variety by a complementary torus.

Congruences of Multinomial Lattices
We study the congruence lattices of the multinomial lattices L(v) introduced by Bennett and Birkhoff. Our main motivation is to investigate Parikh equivalence relations that model concurrent computation. We accomplish this goal by providing an explicit description of the join dependency relation between two join irreducible elements and of its reflexive transitive closure. The explicit description emphasizes several properties and makes it possible to separate the equational theories of multinomial lattices by their dimensions. In their covering of non modular varieties Jipsen and Rose define a sequence of equations SD_{n}(\land), for n \geq 0. Our main result sounds as follows: if v = (v_{1},...,v_{n}) \in N^{n} and v_{i} > 0 for i = 1,..., n, then the multinomial lattice L(v) satisfies SD_{n-1}(\land) and fails SD_{n-2}(\land).
