Gorenstein locus of minuscule Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we describe explicitely the Gorenstein locus of all minuscule Schubert varieties. This proves a special case of a conjecture of A. Woo and A. Yong (see math.AG/0603273) on the Gorenstein locus of Schubert varieties.

Hilbert functions of points on Schubert varieties in Orthogonal Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
A solution is given to the following problem: how to compute the multiplicity, or more generally the Hilbert function, at a point on a Schubert variety in an orthogonal Grassmannian. Standard monomial theory is applied to translate the problem from geometry to combinatorics. The solution of the resulting combinatorial problem forms the bulk of the paper. This approach has been followed earlier to solve the same problem for the Grassmannian and the symplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we present an interpretation of the multiplicity as the number of non-intersecting lattice paths of a certain kind. Taking the Schubert variety to be of a special kind and the point to be the "identity coset," our problem specializes to a problem about Pfaffian ideals treatments of which by different methods exist in the literature. Also available in the literature is a geometric solution when the point is a "generic singularity."

Piecewise polynomials, Minkowski weights, and localization on toric varieties
Published in Algebra Number Theory 2 (2008), no. 2, 135--155. • View PublicationBIB
We use localization to describe the restriction map from equivariant Chow cohomology to ordinary Chow cohomology for complete toric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions and Minkowski weights. We compute examples showing that this map is not surjective in general, and that its kernel is not always generated in degree one. We prove a localization formula for mixed volumes of lattice polytopes and, more generally, a Bott residue formula for toric vector bundles.

Excited Young diagrams and equivariant Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of isotropic Grassmannians by using a localization map to the torus fixed points. We present two types of formulas for equivariant Schubert classes of these homogeneous spaces. The first formula involves combinatorial objects which we call ``excited Young diagrams'' and the second one is written in terms of factorial Schur $Q$- or $P$-functions. As an application, we give a Giambelli-type formula for the equivariant Schubert classes. We also give combinatorial and Pfaffian formulas for the multiplicity of a singular point in a Schubert variety.

Tropicalization of group representations
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 8 (2008) 279-307 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give an interpretation to the boundary points of the compactification of the parameter space of convex projective structures on an n-manifold M. These spaces are closed semi-algebraic subsets of the variety of characters of representations of the fundamental group of M in SL_{n+1}(R). The boundary was constructed as the tropicalization of this semi-algebraic set. Here we show that the geometric interpretation for the points of the boundary can be constructed searching for a tropical analogue to an action of the group on a projective space. To do this we need to construct a tropical projective space with many invertible projective maps. We achieve this using a generalization of the Bruhat-Tits buildings for SL_{n+1} to non-archimedean fields with real surjective valuation. In the case n = 1 these objects are the real trees used by Morgan and Shalen to describe the boundary points for the Teichmuller spaces. In the general case they are contractible metric spaces with a structure of tropical projective spaces.

Combinatorial aspects of mirror symmetry
Published in Contemporary Mathematics 452 (2008), 35-66 • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this paper is to review some combinatorial ideas behind the mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. We suggest as a basic combinatorial object the notion of a Gorenstein polytope of index r. A natural combinatorial duality for d-dimensional Gorenstein polytopes of index r extends the well-known polar duality for reflexive polytopes (case r=1). We consider the Borisov duality between two nef-partitions as a duality between two Gorenstein polytopes P and P^* of index r together with selected special (r-1)-dimensional simplices S in P and S' in P^*. Different choices of these simplices suggest an interesting relation to Homological Mirror Symmetry.

B-orbits of nilpotent order 2 and link patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we describe geometry of orbits of upper triangular matrices of nilpotent order 2 under conjugation by the group of upper triangular invertible matrices in terms of link patterns. Further we apply this description to the computations of the closures of orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 and intersections of components of a Springer fiber of nilpotent order 2. In particular we connect our results to the combinatorics of meanders and Temperley-Lieb algebras.

Multiplier ideals of sums via cellular resolutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fix nonzero ideal sheaves a_1,...,a_r on a normal Q-Gorenstein complex variety X. Fix any positive real number c, and consider the multiplier ideal J of the sum a_1+...+a_r with weighting coefficient c. We construct an exact sequence resolving J by sheaves over X that are direct sums of multiplier ideals for products a_1^{v_1}...a_r^{v_r} for various real vectors v such that v_1+...+v_r = c. The resolution is cellular, in the sense that its boundary maps are encoded by the algebraic chain complex of a regular CW-complex. The CW-complex is naturally expressed as a triangulation T of the simplex of nonnegative real vectors summing to c. The acyclicity of our resolution reduces to that of a cellular free resolution, supported on T, of a related monomial ideal. This acyclicity rests on a comparison between the homology of certain homology-manifolds-with-boundary and the homology of the simplicial complexes obtained by deleting collections of boundary faces from them. Our resolution implies the multiplier ideal sum formula J((a_1+...+a_r)^c) = \sum_{|v|=c} J(a_1^{v_1}...a_r^{v_r}), which implicitly follows from Takagi's proof of the two-summand formula (math.AG/0410612). We recover Howald's multiplier ideal formula for monomial ideals (math.AG/0003232) as a special case. Our resolution also yields a new exactness proof for the Skoda complex.

Quiver varieties, category O for rational Cherednik algebras, and Hecke algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We relate the representations of the rational Cherednik algebras associated with the complex reflection group G(m,1,n) to sheaves on Nakajima quiver varieties associated with extended Dynkin gaphs via a Z-algebra construction. As the parameters defining the Cherednik algebra vary, the stability conditions defining the quiver variety change. We interpret the ordering on category O geometrically using this relationship; we also relate the geometry to the a-function for Hecke algebras with unequal parameters.

Threshold graphs, shifted complexes, and graphical complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a variety of connections between threshold graphs, shifted complexes, and simplicial complexes naturally formed from a graph. These graphical complexes include the independent set, neighborhood, and dominance complexes. We present a number of structural results and relations among them including new characterizations of the class of threshold graphs.

We obtain 866 isomorphism classes of five-dimensional nonsingular toric Fano varieties using a computer program and the database of four-dimensional reflexive polytopes. The algorithm is based on the existence of facets of Fano polytopes having small integral distance from any vertex.

Correspondences with split polynomial equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce endomorphisms of special jacobians and show that they satisfy polynomial equations with all integer roots which we compute. The eigen-abelian varieties for these endomorphisms are generalizations of Prym-Tjurin varieties and naturally contain special curves representing cohomology classes which are not expected to be represented by curves in generic abelian varieties.

Finite size scaling for the core of large random hypergraphs
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2008, Vol. 18, No. 5, 1993-2040 • View PublicationBIB
The (two) core of a hypergraph is the maximal collection of hyperedges within which no vertex appears only once. It is of importance in tasks such as efficiently solving a large linear system over GF[2], or iterative decoding of low-density parity-check codes used over the binary erasure channel. Similar structures emerge in a variety of NP-hard combinatorial optimization and decision problems, from vertex cover to satisfiability. For a uniformly chosen random hypergraph of $m=nρ$ vertices and $n$ hyperedges, each consisting of the same fixed number $l\geq3$ of vertices, the size of the core exhibits for large $n$ a first-order phase transition, changing from $o(n)$ for $ρ>ρ_{\mathrm{c}}$ to a positive fraction of $n$ for $ρ<ρ_{\mathrm{c}}$, with a transition window size $Θ(n^{-1/2})$ around $ρ_{\mathrm{c}}>0$. Analyzing the corresponding ``leaf removal'' algorithm, we determine the associated finite-size scaling behavior. In particular, if $ρ$ is inside the scaling window (more precisely, $ρ=ρ_{\mathrm{c}}+rn^{-1/2}$), the probability of having a core of size $Θ(n)$ has a limit strictly between 0 and 1, and a leading correction of order $Θ(n^{-1/6})$. The correction admits a sharp characterization in terms of the distribution of a Brownian motion with quadratic shift, from which it inherits the scaling with $n$. This behavior is expected to be universal for a wide collection of combinatorial problems.

Completely reducible hypersurfaces in a pencil
Published in Advances in Mathematics 219 (2008), no. 2, 672--688. • View PublicationBIB
We study completely reducible fibers of pencils of hypersurfaces on $\mathbb P^n$ and associated codimension one foliations of $\mathbb P^n$. Using methods from theory of foliations we obtain certain upper bounds for the number of these fibers as functions only of $n$. Equivalently this gives upper bounds for the dimensions of resonance varieties of hyperplane arrangements. We obtain similar bounds for the dimensions of the characteristic varieties of the arrangement complements.

Jacobian varieties of reduced tropical curves
On tropical geometry in $\rr^2$, the divisor and the Jacobian variety are defined in analogy to algebraic geometry. For study of these objects, it is important to think of the `bunch' of a tropical curve. In this paper, we will show that if the bunch is a bouquet, then the Jacobian is a higher-dimensional torus.

Hamilton cycles in highly connected and expanding graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove a sufficient condition for the existence of a Hamilton cycle, which is applicable to a wide variety of graphs, including relatively sparse graphs. In contrast to previous criteria, ours is based on only two properties: one requiring expansion of ``small'' sets, the other ensuring the existence of an edge between any two disjoint ``large'' sets. We also discuss applications in positional games, random graphs and extremal graph theory.

Codes defined by forms of degree 2 on quadric and non-degenerate hermitian varieties in $\mathbb{P}^{4}(\mathbb{F}_q)$}
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the functional codes of second order defined by G. Lachaud on $\mathcal{X} \subset {\mathbb{P}}^4(\mathbb{F}_q)$ a quadric of rank($\mathcal{X}$)=3,4,5 or a non-degenerate hermitian variety. We give some bounds for %$# \mathcal{X}_{Z(\mathcal{Q})}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$, the number of points of quadratic sections of $\mathcal{X}$, which are the best possible and show that codes defined on non-degenerate quadrics are better than those defined on degenerate quadrics. We also show the geometric structure of the minimum weight codewords and estimate the second weight of these codes. For $\mathcal{X}$ a non-degenerate hermitian variety, we list the first five weights and the corresponding codewords. The paper ends with two conjectures. One on the minimum distance for the functional codes of order $h$ on $\mathcal{X} \subset {\mathbb{P}}^4(\mathbb{F}_q)$ a non-singular hermitian variety. The second conjecture on the distribution of the codewords of the first five weights of the functional codes of second order on $\mathcal{X} \subset {\mathbb{P}}^N(\mathbb{F}_q)$ the non-singular hermitian variety.

Embedded factor patterns for Deodhar elements in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for finite Weyl groups arise in the geometry of Schubert varieties and representation theory. It was proved very soon after their introduction that they have nonnegative integer coefficients, but no completely combinatorial interpretation for them is known in general. Deodhar (1990) has given a framework for computing the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, which generally involves recursion. We define embedded factor pattern avoidance for general Coxeter groups and use it to characterize when Deodhar's algorithm yields a simple combinatorial formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of finite Weyl groups. Equivalently, if $(W, S)$ is a Coxeter system for a finite Weyl group, we classify the elements $w \in W$ for which the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element $C'_w$ can be written as a monomial of $C'_s$ where $s \in S$. This work generalizes results of Billey-Warrington (2001) which identified the Deodhar elements in type $A$ as 321-hexagon-avoiding permutations, and Fan-Green (1997) which identified the fully-tight Coxeter groups.

The cohomology of real De Concini-Procesi models of Coxeter type
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices 2008 (2008), rnn001, 29pp. • View PublicationBIB
We study the rational cohomology groups of the real De Concini-Procesi model corresponding to a finite Coxeter group, generalizing the type-A case of the moduli space of stable genus 0 curves with marked points. We compute the Betti numbers in the exceptional types, and give formulae for them in types B and D. We give a generating-function formula for the characters of the representations of a Coxeter group of type B on the rational cohomology groups of the corresponding real De Concini-Procesi model, and deduce the multiplicities of one-dimensional characters in the representations, and a formula for the Euler character. We also give a moduli space interpretation of this type-B variety, and hence show that the action of the Coxeter group extends to a slightly larger group.
