A note on the alternating number of independent sets in a graph
The independence polynomial of a graph $G$ evaluated at $-1$, denoted here as $I(G;-1)$, has arisen in a variety of different areas of mathematics and theoretical physics as an object of interest. Engström used discrete Morse theory to prove that $\left|I(G;-1)\right|\leq 2^{φ(G)}$ where $φ(G)$ is the decycling number of $G$, i.e., the minimum number of vertices needed to be deleted from $G$ so that the remaining graph is acyclic. Here, we improve Engström's bound by showing $\left|I(G;-1)\right|\leq 2^{φ_3(G)}$ where $φ_3(G)$ is the minimum number of vertices needed to be deleted from $G$ so that the resulting graph contains no induced cycles whose length is divisible by $3$. We also note that this bound is not just sharp but that every value in the range given by the bound is attainable by some connected graph.

Higher level $q$-multiple zeta values with applications to quasimodular forms and partitions
In recent years, the generalized sum-of-divisor functions of MacMahon have been unified into the algebraic framework of $q$-multiple zeta values. In particular, these results link partition theory, quasimodular forms, $q$-multiple zeta values, and quasi-shuffle algebras. In this paper, we complete this idea of unification for higher levels, demonstrating that any quasimodular form of weight $k \geq 2$ and level $N$ may be expressed in terms of the $q$-multiple zeta values of level $N$ studied algebraically by Yuan and Zhao. We also give results restricted to $q$-multiple zeta values with integer coefficients, and we construct completely additive generating sets for spaces of quasimodular forms and for quasimodular forms with integer coefficients. We also provide a variety of computational examples from number-theoretic perspectives that suggest many new applications of the algebraic structure of $q$-multiple zeta values to quasimodular forms and partitions.

Hikita conjecture for classical Lie algebras
Let $G$ be $Sp_{2n}$, $SO_{2n}$ or $SO_{2n+1}$ and let $G^\vee$ be its Langlands dual group. Barbasch and Vogan based on earlier work of Lusztig and Spaltenstein, define a duality map $D$ that sends nilpotent orbits $\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee} \subset \mathfrak{g}^\vee$ to special nilpotent orbits $\mathbb{O}_e\subset \mathfrak{g}$. In a work by Losev, Mason-Brown and Matvieievskyi, an upgraded version $\tilde{D}$ of this duality is considered, called the refined BVLS duality. $\tilde{D}(\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee})$ is a $G$-equivariant cover $\tilde{\mathbb{O}}_e$ of $\mathbb{O}_e$. Let $S_{e^\vee}$ be the nilpotent Slodowy slice of the orbit $\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee}$. The two varieties $X^\vee= S_{e^\vee}$ and $X=$ Spec$(\mathbb{C}[\tilde{\mathbb{O}}_e])$ are expected to be symplectic dual to each other. In this context, a version of the Hikita conjecture predicts an isomorphism between the cohomology ring of the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_{e^\vee}$ and the ring of regular functions on the scheme-theoretic fixed point $X^T$ for some torus $T$. This paper verifies the isomorphism for certain pairs $e$ and $e^\vee$. These cases are expected to cover almost all instances in which the Hikita conjecture holds when $e^\vee$ regular in a Levi $\mathfrak{l}^\vee\subset \mathfrak{g}^\vee$. Our results in these cases follow from the relations of three different types of objects: generalized coinvariant algebras, equivariant cohomology rings, and functions on scheme-theoretic intersections. We also give evidence for the Hikita conjecture when $e^\vee$ is distinguished.

On Geometry and Combinatorics of Finite Classical Polar Spaces
Polar spaces over finite fields are fundamental in combinatorial geometry. The concept of polar space was firstly introduced by F. Veldkamp who gave a system of 10 axioms in the spirit of Universal Algebra. Later the axioms were simplified by J. Tits, who introduced the concept of subspaces. Later on, from the point of view of incidence geometry, axioms of polar spaces were also given by F. Buekenhout and E. Shult in 1974. The reader can find the three systems of axioms of polar spaces in Appendix A. Examples of polar spaces are the so called Finite classical polar spaces, i.e. incidence structures arising from quadrics, symplectic spaces and Hermitian varieties, which are in correspondance with reflexive sesquilinear forms. It is still an open problem to show whether or not classical polar spaces are the only example of finite polar spaces. Nowadays, some research problems related to finite classical polar space are: existence of spreads and ovoids; existence of regular systems and $m$-ovoids; upper or lower bounds on partial spreads and partial ovoids. Moreover, polar spaces are in relation with combinatorial objects as regular graphs, block designs and association schemes. In this Ph.D. Thesis we investigate the geometry of finite classical polar spaces, giving contributions to the above problems. The thesis is organized as follows. Part I is more focused on the geometric aspects of polar spaces, while in Part II some combinatorial objects are introduced such as regular graphs, association schemes and combinatorial designs. Finally Appendix B, C and D are dedicated to give more details on, respectively, maximal curves, linear codes and combinatorial designs, giving useful results and definitions.

Multiprojective Seshadri stratifications for Schubert varieties and standard monomial theory
Using the language of Seshadri stratifications we develop a geometrical interpretation of Lakshmibai-Seshadri-tableaux and their associated standard monomial bases. These tableaux are a generalization of Young-tableaux and De-Concini-tableaux to all Dynkin types. More precisely, we construct filtrations of multihomogeneous coordinate rings of Schubert varieties, such that the subquotients are one-dimensional and indexed by standard tableaux.

Hypergraph associahedra and compactifications of moduli spaces of points
We prove that every Hassett compactification of the moduli space of weighted stable rational curves that admits both a reduction map from the Losev-Manin compactification and a reduction map to projective space is a toric variety, whose corresponding polytope is a hypergraph associahedron (also known as a nestohedron). In addition, we present an analogous result for the moduli space of labeled weighted points in affine space up to translation and scaling. These results are interconnected, and we make their relationship explicit through the concept of ``inflation" of a hypergraph associahedron.

Upper tails for arithmetic progressions revisited
Let $X$ be the number of $k$-term arithmetic progressions contained in the $p$-biased random subset of the first $N$ positive integers. We give asymptotically sharp estimates on the logarithmic upper-tail probability $\log \Pr(X \ge E[X] + t)$ for all $Ω(N^{-2/k}) \le p \ll 1$ and all $t \gg \sqrt{Var(X)}$, excluding only a few boundary cases. In particular, we show that the space of parameters $(p,t)$ is partitioned into three phenomenologically distinct regions, where the upper-tail probabilities either resemble those of Gaussian or Poisson random variables, or are naturally described by the probability of appearance of a small set that contains nearly all of the excess $t$ progressions. We employ a variety of tools from probability theory, including classical tilting arguments and martingale concentration inequalities. However, the main technical innovation is a combinatorial result that establishes a stronger version of `entropic stability' for sets with rich arithmetic structure.
Multiplicative Inequalities In Cluster Algebras Of Finite Type
Generalizing the notion of a multiplicative inequality among minors of a totally positive matrix, we describe, over full rank cluster algebras of finite type, the cone of Laurent monomials in cluster variables that are bounded as a real-valued function on the positive locus of the cluster variety. We prove that the extreme rays of this cone are the u-variables of the cluster algebra. Using this description, we prove that all bounded ratios are bounded by 1 and give a sufficient condition for all such ratios to be subtraction free. This allows us to show in Gr(2, n), Gr(3, 6), Gr(3, 7), Gr(3, 8) that every bounded Laurent monomial in Plücker coordinates factors into a positive integer combination of so-called primitive ratios. In Gr(4, 8) this factorization does not exists, but we provide the full list of extreme rays of the cone of bounded Laurent monomials in Plücker coordinates.
From Schubert Varieties to Doubly-Spherical Varieties
Horospherical Schubert varieties are determined. It is shown that the stabilizer of an arbitrary point in a Schubert variety is a strongly solvable algebraic group. The connectedness of this stabilizer subgroup is discussed. Moreover, a new family of spherical varieties, called doubly spherical varieties, is introduced. It is shown that every nearly toric Schubert variety is doubly spherical.

Hyperplane Arrangements in the Grassmannian
The Euler characteristic of a very affine variety encodes the algebraic complexity of solving likelihood (or scattering) equations on this variety. We study this quantity for the Grassmannian with $d$ hyperplane sections removed. We provide a combinatorial formula, and explain how to compute this Euler characteristic in practice, both symbolically and numerically. Our particular focus is on generic hyperplane sections and on Schubert divisors. We also consider special Schubert arrangements relevant for physics. We study both the complex and the real case.

Fixed point counts and motivic invariants of bow varieties of affine type A
We compute the equivariant K-theory of torus fixed points of Cherkis bow varieties of affine type A. We deduce formulas for the generating series of the Euler numbers of these varieties and observe their modularity in certain cases. We also obtain refined formulas on the motivic level for a class of bow varieties strictly containing Nakajima quiver varieties. These series hence generalise results of Nakajima-Yoshioka. As a special case, we obtain formulas for certain Zastava spaces. We define a parabolic analogue of Nekrasov's partition function and find an equation relating it to the classical partition function.

The entries of the Sinkhorn limit of an $m \times n$ matrix
We use a variety of computational tools to obtain a degree-$\binom{m + n - 2}{m - 1}$ polynomial equation conjecturally satisfied by the top-left entry of the Sinkhorn limit of a positive $m \times n$ matrix. The degree of this equation has a combinatorial interpretation as the number of minors of an $(m - 1) \times (n - 1)$ matrix, and the coefficients involve a determinant formula that reflects new combinatorial structure on sets of minor specifications. The tools we use include Gröbner bases, which produce equations for small matrices; the PSLQ algorithm, which produces equations for larger matrices as part of an interpolation effort that required 1.5 years of CPU time; and ChatGPT o3-mini-high, which identified the signs of the off-diagonal entries in the determinant formula.

Coxeter groups and Billey-Postnikov decompositions
In this chapter, we give an overview of Billey-Postnikov (BP) decompositions which have become an important tool for understanding the geometry and combinatorics of Schubert varieties. BP decompositions are factorizations of Coxeter group elements with many nice properties in relation to Bruhat partial order. They have played an important role in the classification and enumeration of smooth Schubert varieties. They have also been used in the study of inversion hyperplane arrangements and permutation pattern avoidance. We survey many of these applications.

A superpotential for Grassmannian Schubert varieties
While mirror symmetry for flag varieties and Grassmannians has been extensively studied, Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian are singular, and hence standard mirror symmetry statements are not well-defined. Nevertheless, in this article we introduce a ``superpotential'' $W^λ$ for each Grassmannian Schubert variety $X_λ$, generalizing the Marsh-Rietsch superpotential for Grassmannians, and we show that $W^λ$ governs many toric degenerations of $X_λ$. We also generalize the ``polytopal mirror theorem'' for Grassmannians from our previous work: namely, for any cluster seed $G$ for $X_λ$, we construct a corresponding Newton-Okounkov convex body $Δ_G^λ$, and show that it coincides with the superpotential polytope $Γ_G^λ$, that is, it is cut out by the inequalities obtained by tropicalizing an associated Laurent expansion of $W^λ$. This gives us a toric degeneration of the Schubert variety $X_λ$ to the (singular) toric variety $Y(\mathcal{N}_λ)$ of the Newton-Okounkov body. Finally, for a particular cluster seed $G=G^λ_{\mathrm{rec}}$ we show that the toric variety $Y(\mathcal{N}_λ)$ has a small toric desingularisation, and we describe an intermediate partial desingularisation $Y(\mathcal{F}_λ)$ that is Gorenstein Fano. Many of our results extend to more general varieties in the Grassmannian.

Multiprojective Seshadri stratifications and Young-tableaux
We provide an algebraic-geometrical interpretation of the classical semistandard Young-tableaux via the notion of Seshadri stratifications. The columns appearing in such a tableau correspond to vanishing multiplicities of certain rational functions on Schubert varieties. To build a framework for this correspondence we generalize Seshadri stratifications to multiprojective varieties, which forms the largest part of this article.

Cluster structures on spinor helicity and momentum twistor varieties
We study the homogeneous coordinate rings of partial flag varieties and Grassmannians in their Plücker embeddings and exhibit an embedding of the former into the latter. Both rings are cluster algebras and the embedding respects the cluster algebra structures in the sense that there exists a seed for the Grassmannian that restricts to a seed for the partial flag variety (\textit{i.e.} it is obtained by freezing and deleting some cluster variables). The motivation for this project stems from the application of cluster algebras in scattering amplitudes: spinor helicity and momentum twistor varieties describe massless scattering without assuming dual conformal symmetry. Both may be obtained from Grassmanninas which model the dual conformal case. They are instances of partial flag varieties and their cluster structures reveal information for the scattering amplitudes. As an application of our main result we exhibit the relation between these cluster algebras.

An asymmetric version of Elekes-Szabó via group actions
We consider when finite families $F \subseteq \mathbb{C}[t]$ of bounded degree polynomials, or more generally of bounded complexity finite-to-finite correspondences on $\mathbb{C}$, can exhibit non-expansion of the form $|F(A)| = O(|A|^{1+η})$ in their actions on finite sets $A \subseteq \mathbb{C}$ with $|F| \gg |A|^\eps \gg 1$, for a fixed $\eps>0$ and arbitrarily small $η>0$. Our conclusions generalise the Elekes-Rónyai and Elekes-Szabó theorems, which correspond to the case that $F$ is parametrised by a single complex variable and $|F|=|A|$. Our result also applies to families of correspondences between varieties of arbitrary dimension if we impose a general position assumption on $A$. In all cases, the conclusion is that a commutative algebraic group structure is responsible. As a special case, we obtain asymmetric versions of Elekes-Rónyai and Elekes-Szabó, with explicit bounds on exponents. Our methods originate in model theory.

Solvable and Nilpotent Matroids: Realizability and Irreducible Decomposition of Their Associated Varieties
We introduce the families of solvable and nilpotent matroids, examining their realization spaces, closures, and associated matroid and circuit varieties. We study their realizability, as well as the irreducible decomposition of their associated matroid and circuit varieties. Additionally, we describe a finite generating set for the corresponding ideals, considered up to radical. We establish sufficient conditions for both the realizability of these matroids and the irreducibility of their associated varieties. Specifically, we establish the realizability and irreducibility of matroid varieties associated with nilpotent matroids and prove the irreducibility of matroid varieties arising from certain classes of solvable paving matroids. Additionally, we analyze the defining polynomial equations of these varieties using Grassmann-Cayley algebra and geometric liftability techniques. Furthermore, we provide a complete generating set for the matroid ideals associated with forest configurations.

A point-variety incidence theorem over finite fields, and its applications
Incidence problems between geometric objects is a key area of focus in the field of discrete geometry. Among them, the study of incidence problems over finite fields have received a considerable amount of attention in recent years. In this paper, by characterizing the singular values and singular vectors of the corresponding incidence matrix through group algebras, we prove a bound on the number of incidences between points and varieties of a certain form over finite fields. Our result leads to a new incidence bound for points and flats in finite geometries, which improves previous results for certain parameter regimes. As another application of our point-variety incidence bound, we extend a result on pinned distance problems by Phuong, Thang, and Vinh, and independently by Cilleruelo, Iosevich, Lund, Roche-Newton, and Rudnev, under a weaker condition.
Dimer face polynomials in knot theory and cluster algebras
The set of perfect matchings of a connected bipartite plane graph $G$ has the structure of a distributive lattice, as shown by Propp, where the partial order is induced by the height of a matching. In this article, our focus is the dimer face polynomial of $G$, which is the height generating function of all perfect matchings of $G$. We connect the dimer face polynomial on the one hand to knot theory, and on the other to cluster algebras. We show that certain dimer face polynomials are multivariate generalizations of Alexander polynomials of links, highlighting another combinatorial view of the Alexander polynomial. We also show that an arbitrary dimer face polynomial is an $F$-polynomial in the cluster algebra whose initial quiver is dual to the graph $G$. As a result, we recover a recent representation theoretic result of Bazier-Matte and Schiffler that connects $F$-polynomials and Alexander polynomials, albeit from a very different, dimer-based perspective. As another application of our results, we also show that all nonvanishing Plücker coordinates on open positroid varieties are cluster monomials.
