These notes cover the lectures of the first named author at 2021 IHES Summer School on "Enumerative Geometry, Physics and Representation Theory" with additional details and references. They cover the definition of Khovanov-Rozansky triply graded homology, its basic properties and recent advances, as well as three algebro-geometric models for link homology: braid varieties, Hilbert schemes of singular curves and affine Springer fibers, and Hilbert schemes of points on the plane.
Helly-type Problems
In this paper, we present a variety of problems in the interface between combinatorics and geometry around the theorems of Helly, Radon, Carathéodory, and Tverberg. Through these problems we describe the fascinating area of Helly-type theorems, and explain some of its main themes and goals.
Gromov-Witten theory and invariants of matroids

We use techniques from Gromov-Witten theory to construct new invariants of matroids taking value in the Chow groups of spaces of rational curves in the permutohedral toric variety. When the matroid is realizable by a complex hyperplane arrangement, our invariants coincide with virtual fundamental classes used to define the logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory of wonderful models of arrangement complements, for any logarithmic structure supported on the wonderful boundary. When the boundary is empty, this implies that the quantum cohomology ring of a hyperplane arrangement's wonderful model is a combinatorial invariant, i.e., it depends only on the matroid. When the boundary divisor is maximal, we use toric intersection theory to convert the virtual fundamental class into a balanced weighted fan in a vector space, having the expected dimension. We explain how the associated Gromov-Witten theory is completely encoded by intersections with this weighted fan. We include a number of questions whose positive answers would lead to a well-defined Gromov-Witten theory of non-realizable matroids.
Bumpless pipe dreams encode Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials
In their study of infinite flag varieties, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2021) introduced bumpless pipe dreams in a new combinatorial formula for double Schubert polynomials. These polynomials are the TxT-equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties and of their flat degenerations. We give diagonal term orders with respect to which bumpless pipe dreams index the irreducible components of diagonal Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties, counted with scheme-theoretic multiplicity.
This indexing was conjectured by Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt (2022). This result establishes that bumpless pipe dreams are dual to and as geometrically natural as classical pipe dreams, for which an analogous anti-diagonal theory was developed by Knutson and Miller (2005).

In [A. Aguglia, A. Cossidente, G. Korchmaros, "On quasi-Hermitian varieties", J. Comb. Des. 20 (2012), 433-447] new quasi-Hermitian varieties ${\mathcal M}_{α,β}$ in $\mathrm{PG}(r,q^2)$ depending on a pair of parameters $α,β$ from the underlying field $\mathrm{GF}(q^2)$ have been constructed. In the present paper we determine the projective equivalence classes of such varieties for $r=3$ and $q$ odd.

We prove that large classes of algebras in the framework of root of unity quantum cluster algebras have the structures of maximal orders in central simple algebras and Cayley-Hamilton algebras in the sense of Procesi. We show that every root of unity upper quantum cluster algebra is a maximal order and obtain an explicit formula for its reduced trace. Under mild assumptions, inside each such algebra we construct a canonical central subalgebra isomorphic to the underlying upper cluster algebra, such that the pair is a Cayley-Hamilton algebra; its fully Azumaya locus is shown to contain a copy of the underlying cluster $\mathcal{A}$-variety. Both results are proved in the wider generality of intersections of mixed quantum tori over subcollections of seeds. Furthermore, we prove that all monomial subalgebras of root of unity quantum tori are Cayley-Hamilton algebras and classify those ones that are maximal orders. Arbitrary intersections of those over subsets of seeds are also proved to be Cayley-Hamilton algebras. Previous approaches to constructing maximal orders relied on filtration and homological methods. We use new methods based on cluster algebras.
The Möbius function on Affine Grassmannian elements
To any saturated chain in the affine Weyl group whose translation parts are sufficiently regular, we associate a near path and a far path in the quantum Bruhat graph. Using this, working in the Bruhat order on the minimal-length representatives of the cosets in the affine Weyl group with respect to the finite Weyl group, we characterize the pairs of elements for which the Möbius function is nonzero. This is applied to obtain explicit expansions in the $K$-theory of affine Grassmannians, of the basis of ideal sheaves into the basis of structure sheaves of Schubert varieties.
Perturbing eigenvalues of nonnegative centrosymmetric matrices
An $n\times n$ matrix $C$ is said to be {\it centrosymmetric} if it satisfies the relation $JCJ=C$, where $J$ is the $n\times n$ counteridentity matrix. Centrosymmetric matrices have a rich eigenstructure that has been studied extensively in the literature. Many results for centrosymmetric matrices have been generalized to wider classes of matrices that arise in a wide variety of disciplines. In this paper, we obtain interesting spectral properties for nonnegative centrosymmetric matrices. We show how to change one single eigenvalue, two or three eigenvalues of an $n\times n$ nonnegative centrosymmetric matrix without changing any of the remaining eigenvalues neither nonnegativity nor the centrosymmetric structure. Moreover, our results allow partially answer some known questions given by Guo [11] and by Guo and Guo [12]. Our proofs generate algorithmic procedures that allow to compute a solution matrix.
Likelihood Degenerations

Computing all critical points of a monomial on a very affine variety is a fundamental task in algebraic statistics, particle physics and other fields. The number of critical points is known as the maximum likelihood (ML) degree. When the variety is smooth, it coincides with the Euler characteristic. We introduce degeneration techniques that are inspired by the soft limits in CEGM theory, and we answer several questions raised in the physics literature. These pertain to bounded regions in discriminantal arrangements and to moduli spaces of point configurations. We present theory and practise, connecting complex geometry, tropical combinatorics, and numerical nonlinear algebra.
B_{n-1}-bundles on the flag variety, II

This paper is the sequel to ``$B_{n-1}$-bundles on the flag variety, I". We continue our study of the orbits of a Borel subgroup $B_{n-1}$ of $G_{n-1}=GL(n-1)$ (resp. $SO(n-1)$) acting on the flag variety $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ of $G=GL(n)$ (resp. $SO(n)$). We begin by using the results of the first paper to obtain a complete combinatorial model of the $B_{n-1}$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ in terms of partitions into lists. The model allows us to obtain explicit formulas for the number of orbits as well as the exponential generating functions for the sequences $\{|B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}|\}_{n\geq 1}$ . We then use the combinatorial description of the orbits to construct a canonical set of representatives of the orbits in terms of flags. These representatives allow us to understand an extended monoid action on $B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}$ using simple roots of both $\mathfrak{g}_{n-1}$ and $\mathfrak{g}$ and show that the closure ordering on $B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}$ is the standard ordering of Richardson and Springer.

In this paper, we study a family of generating functions whose coefficients are polynomials that enumerate partitions in lower order ideals of Young's lattice. Our main result is that this family satisfies a rational recursion and are therefore rational functions. As an application, we calculate the asymptotic behavior of the cardinality of lower order ideals for the ``average" partition of fixed length and give a homological interpretation of this result in relation to Grassmannians and their Schubert varieties.
On the infiniteness of a family of APN functions

APN functions play a fundamental role in cryptography against attacks on block ciphers. Several families of quadratic APN functions have been proposed in the recent years, whose construction relies on the existence of specific families of polynomials. A key question connected with such constructions is to determine whether such APN functions exist for infinitely many dimensions or not.
In this paper we consider a family of functions recently introduced by Li et al. in 2021 showing that for any dimension $m\geq 3$ there exists an APN function belonging to such a family.
Our main result is proved by a combination of different techniques arising from both algebraic varieties over finite fields connected with linearized permutation rational functions and {partial vector space partitions}, together with investigations on the kernels of linearized polynomials.

A Generalization of Deodhar's Framework for Questions in Kazhdan-Lusztig Theory
We make progress on a question of Skandera by showing that a product of Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements indexed by maximal elements of parabolic subgroups admits a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element as a quotient arising from operations in the Schur algebroid if and only if the sequence of parabolic subgroups satisfy both a rigidity condition and a combinatorial criterion. For Weyl groups, the rigidity condition specializes to a necessary condition for smallness of Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions. For Schubert varieties indexed by 4231-avoiding permutations, we derive a stronger necessary condition that, up to an appropriate equivalence, is satisfied by at most one Gelfand-MacPherson resolution, and exactly one if and only if 45312 is also avoided. Moreover, we apply the combinatorial criterion to prove the (essentially unique) resolution is small when 34512 and 45123 are likewise avoided.
We develop the combinatorial criterion as part of a generalization of Deodhar's combinatorial setting for questions in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, which in the case of Weyl groups we show captures the Byałynicki-Birula decompositions of Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions. In particular, we obtain new combinatorial interpretations of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, new algorithms for computing them, and in the case of Weyl groups, an equivalence of the existence of small Gelfand-MacPherson resolutions with that of certain factorizations and generating-function interpretations of the Poincaré polynomial of intersection cohomology of the Schubert variety.
Which Schubert Varieties are Hessenberg Varieties?

After proving that every Schubert variety in the full flag variety of a complex reductive group $G$ is a general Hessenberg variety, we show that not all such Schubert varieties are adjoint Hessenberg varieties. In fact, in types A and C, we provide pattern avoidance criteria implying that the proportion of Schubert varieties that are adjoint Hessenberg varieties approaches zero as the rank of $G$ increases. We show also that in type A, some Schubert varieties are not isomorphic to any adjoint Hessenberg variety.

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be the Galois field $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}$ of order $q^t, q=p^e, p$ a prime, $A=\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{K})$ be the automorphism group of $\mathbb{K}$ and $\boldsymbolσ=(σ_0,\ldots, σ_{d-1}) \in A^d$, $d \geq 1$. In this paper the following generalization of the Veronese map is studied: $$ ν_{d,\boldsymbolσ} : \langle v\rangle \in \mathrm{PG}(n-1,\mathbb{K}) \longrightarrow \langle v^{σ_0} \otimes v^{σ_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes v^{σ_{d-1}}\rangle \in \mathrm{PG} (n^d-1,\mathbb{K} ). $$ Its image will be called the $(d,\boldsymbolσ)$-$Veronese$ $variety$ $\mathcal{V}_{d,\boldsymbolσ}$. Here, we will show that $\mathcal{V}_{d,\boldsymbolσ}$ is the Grassmann embedding of a normal rational scroll and any $d+1$ points of it are linearly independent. We give a characterization of $d+2$ linearly dependent points of $\mathcal{V}_{d,\boldsymbolσ}$ and for some choices of parameters, $\mathcal{V}_{p,\boldsymbolσ}$ is the normal rational curve; for $p=2$, it can be the Segre's arc of $\mathrm{PG}(3,q^t)$; for $p=3$ $\mathcal{V}_{p,\boldsymbolσ}$ can be also a $|\mathcal{V}_{p,\boldsymbolσ}|$-track of $\mathrm{PG}(5,q^t)$. Finally, investigate the link between such points sets and a linear code $\mathcal{C}_{d,\boldsymbolσ}$ that can be associated to the variety, obtaining examples of MDS and almost MDS codes.

Let $W$ be a irreducible Weyl group and $W_a$ its affine Weyl group. In a previous article the author defined an affine variety $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, called the Shi variety of $W_a$, whose integral points are in bijection with $W_a$. The set of irreducible components of $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, denoted $H^0(\widehat{X}_{W_a})$, is of some interest and we show in this article that $H^0(\widehat{X}_{W_a})$ has a structure of semidistributive lattice.
Intersection Problems in Extremal Combinatorics: Theorems, Techniques and Questions Old and New
The study of intersection problems in Extremal Combinatorics dates back perhaps to 1938, when Paul Erdős, Chao Ko and Richard Rado proved the (first) `Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem' on the maximum possible size of an intersecting family of $k$-element subsets of a finite set. Since then, a plethora of results of a similar flavour have been proved, for a range of different mathematical structures, using a wide variety of different methods. Structures studied in this context have included families of vector subspaces, families of graphs, subsets of finite groups with given group actions, and of course uniform hypergraphs with stronger or weaker intersection conditions imposed. The methods used have included purely combinatorial ones such as shifting/compressions, algebraic methods (including linear-algebraic, Fourier analytic and representation-theoretic), and more recently, analytic, probabilistic and regularity-type methods. As well as being natural problems in their own right, intersection problems have connections with many other parts of Combinatorics and with Theoretical Computer Science (and indeed with many other parts of Mathematics), both through the results themselves, and the methods used. In this survey paper, we discuss both old and new results (and both old and new methods), in the field of intersection problems. Many interesting open problems remain; we will discuss several. For expositional and pedagogical purposes, we also take this opportunity to give slightly streamlined versions of proofs (due to others) of several classical results in the area. This survey is intended to be useful to PhD students, as well as to more established researchers. It is a personal perspective on the field, and is not intended to be exhaustive; we apologise for any omissions. It is an expanded version of a paper that will appear in the Proceedings of the 29th British Combinatorial Conference.
The apparent structure of dense Sidon sets

The correspondence between perfect difference sets and transitive projective planes is well-known. We observe that all known dense (i.e., close to square-root size) Sidon subsets of abelian groups come from projective planes through a similar construction. We classify the Sidon sets arising in this manner from desarguesian planes and find essentially no new examples, but there are many further examples arising from nondesarguesian planes. We conjecture that all dense Sidon sets arise in this manner. We also give a brief bestiary of somewhat smaller Sidon sets with a variety of algebraic origins, and for some of them provide an overarching pattern.
Blow-up algebras of secant varieties of rational normal scrolls

In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the blow-up algebras of the secant varieties of balanced rational normal scrolls. In the first part, we give implicit defining equations of their associated Rees algebras and fiber cones. Consequently, we can tell that the fiber cones are Cohen--Macaulay normal domains. Meanwhile, these fiber cones have rational singularities in characteristic zero, and are $F$-rational in positive characteristic. The Gorensteinness of the fiber cones can also be characterized. In the second part, we compute the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularities and $\mathbf{a}$-invariants of the fiber cones. We also present the reduction numbers of the ideals defined by the secant varieties.
