Meeting Covered Elements in $ν$-Tamari Lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
For each complete meet-semilattice $M$, we define an operator $\mathsf{Pop}_M:M\to M$ by \[\mathsf{Pop}_M(x)=\bigwedge(\{y\in M:y\lessdot x\}\cup\{x\}).\] When $M$ is the right weak order on a symmetric group, $\mathsf{Pop}_M$ is the pop-stack-sorting map. We prove some general properties of these operators, including a theorem that describes how they interact with certain lattice congruences. We then specialize our attention to the dynamics of $\mathsf{Pop}_{\text{Tam}(ν)}$, where $\text{Tam}(ν)$ is the $ν$-Tamari lattice. We determine the maximum size of a forward orbit of $\mathsf{Pop}_{\text{Tam}(ν)}$. When $\text{Tam}(ν)$ is the $n^\text{th}$ $m$-Tamari lattice, this maximum forward orbit size is $m+n-1$; in this case, we prove that the number of forward orbits of size $m+n-1$ is \[\frac{1}{n-1}\binom{(m+1)(n-2)+m-1}{n-2}.\] Motivated by the recent investigation of the pop-stack-sorting map, we define a lattice path $μ\in\text{Tam}(ν)$ to be $t$-$\mathsf{Pop}$-sortable if $\mathsf{Pop}_{\text{Tam}(ν)}^t(μ)=ν$. We enumerate $1$-$\mathsf{Pop}$-sortable lattice paths in $\text{Tam}(ν)$ for arbitrary $ν$. We also give a recursive method to generate $2$-$\mathsf{Pop}$-sortable lattice paths in $\text{Tam}(ν)$ for arbitrary $ν$; this allows us to enumerate $2$-$\mathsf{Pop}$-sortable lattice paths in a large variety of $ν$-Tamari lattices that includes the $m$-Tamari lattices.
Geometry of Peterson Schubert calculus in type A and left-right diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce an additive basis of the integral cohomology ring of the Peterson variety which reflects the geometry of certain subvarieties of the Peterson variety. We explain the positivity of the structure constants from a geometric viewpoint, and provide a manifestly positive combinatorial formula for them. We also prove that our basis coincides with the additive basis introduced by Harada-Tymoczko.
Valued rank-metric codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study linear spaces of matrices defined over discretely valued fields and discuss their dimension and minimal rank drops over the associated residue fields. To this end, we take first steps into the theory of rank-metric codes over discrete valuation rings by means of skew algebras derived from Galois extensions of rings. Additionally, we model projectivizations of rank-metric codes via Mustafin varieties, which we then employ to give sufficient conditions for a decrease in the dimension.

Spherical Schubert varieties and pattern avoidance
Published in Selecta Mathematica, Volume 28 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
A normal variety $X$ is called $H$-spherical for the action of the complex reductive group $H$ if it contains a dense orbit of some Borel subgroup of $H$. We resolve a conjecture of Hodges--Yong by showing that their spherical permutations are characterized by permutation pattern avoidance. Together with results of Gao--Hodges--Yong this implies that the sphericality of a Schubert variety $X_w$ with respect to the largest possible Levi subgroup is characterized by this same pattern avoidance condition.
Model-theoretic Elekes-Szabó for stable and o-minimal hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A theorem of Elekes and Szabó recognizes algebraic groups among certain complex algebraic varieties with maximal size intersections with finite grids. We establish a generalization to relations of any arity and dimension, definable in: 1) stable structures with distal expansions (includes algebraically and differentially closed fields of characteristic 0); and 2) o-minimal expansions of groups. Our methods provide explicit bounds on the power saving exponent in the non-group case. Ingredients of the proof include: a higher arity generalization of the abelian group configuration theorem in stable structures, along with a purely combinatorial variant characterizing Latin hypercubes that arise from abelian groups; and Zarankiewicz-style bounds for hypergraphs definable in distal structures.

The combinatorics of a tree-like functional equation for connected chord diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
We build on recent work of Yeats, Courtiel, and others involving connected chord diagrams. We first derive from a Hopf-algebraic foundation a class of tree-like functional equations and prove that they are solved by weighted generating functions of two different subsets of weighted connected chord diagrams: arbitrary diagrams and diagrams forbidding so-called top cycle subdiagrams. These equations generalize the classic specification for increasing ordered trees and their solution uses a novel decomposition, simplifying and generalizing previous results. The resulting tree perspective on chord diagrams leads to new enumerative insights through the study of novel diagram classes. We present a recursive bijection between connected top-cycle-free diagrams with $n$ chords and triangulations of a disk with $n+1$ vertices, thereby counting the former. This connects to combinatorial maps, Catalan intervals, and uniquely sorted permutations, leading to new conjectured bijective relationships between diagram classes defined by forbidding graphical subdiagrams and imposing connectedness properties and a variety of other rich combinatorial objects. We conclude by exhibiting and studying a direct bijection between diagrams of size $n$ with a single terminal chord and diagrams of size $n-1$.

Dual Ramsey properties for classes of algebras
Almost any reasonable class of finite relational structures has the Ramsey property or a precompact Ramsey expansion. In contrast to that, the list of classes of finite algebras with the precompact Ramsey expansion is surprisingly short. In this paper we show that any nontrivial variety (that is, equationally defined class of algebras) enjoys various \emph{dual} Ramsey properties. We develop a completely new set of strategies that rely on the fact that left adjoints preserve the dual Ramsey property, and then treat classes of algebras as Eilenberg-Moore categories for a monad. We show that finite algebras in any nontrivial variety have finite dual small Ramsey degrees, and that every finite algebra has finite dual big Ramsey degree in the free algebra on countably many free generators. As usual, these come as consequences of ordered versions of the statements.

On Combinatorics of the Arthur Trace Formula, Convex Polytopes, and Toric Varieties
Published in Canadian Journal of Mathematics , Volume 75 , Issue 2 , April 2023 , pp. 375 - 420 • View PublicationBIB
We explicate the combinatorial/geometric ingredients of Arthur's proof of the convergence and polynomiality, in a truncation parameter, of his non-invariant trace formula. Starting with a fan in a real, finite dimensional, vector space and a collection of functions, one for each cone in the fan, we introduce a combinatorial truncated function with respect to a polytope normal to the fan and prove the analogues of Arthur's results on the convergence and polynomiality of the integral of this truncated function over the vector space. The convergence statements clarify the important role of certain combinatorial subsets that appear in Arthur's work and provide a crucial partition that amounts to a so-called nearest face partition. The polynomiality statements can be thought of as far reaching extensions of the Ehrhart polynomial. Our proof of polynomiality relies on the Lawrence-Varchenko conical decomposition and readily implies an extension of the well-known combinatorial lemma of Langlands. The Khovanskii-Pukhlikov virtual polytopes are an important ingredient here. Finally, we give some geometric interpretations of our combinatorial truncation on toric varieties as a measure and a Lefschetz number.
Standard monomial theory and toric degenerations of Richardson varieties in flag varieties
Published in Springer volume 'Women in Commutative Algebra - Proceedings of the 2019 WICA Workshop' • View PublicationBIB
We study standard monomial bases for Richardson varieties inside the flag variety. In general, writing down a standard monomial basis for a Richardson variety can be challenging, as it involves computing so-called defining chains or key tableaux. However, for a certain family of Richardson varieties, indexed by compatible permutations, we provide a very direct and straightforward combinatorial rule for writing down a standard monomial basis. We apply this result to the study of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties. In particular, we provide a new family of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside flag varieties.
Standard monomial theory and toric degenerations of Richardson varieties in the Grassmannian
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Richardson varieties are obtained as intersections of Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties. We provide a new family of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside Grassmannians by studying Gröbner degenerations of their corresponding ideals. These degenerations are parametrised by block diagonal matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels-Zelevinsky. We associate a weight vector to each block diagonal matching field and study its corresponding initial ideal. In particular, we characterise when such ideals are toric, hence providing a family of toric degenerations for Richardson varieties. Given a Richardson variety $X_{w}^v$ and a weight vector ${\bf w}_\ell$ arising from a matching field, we consider two ideals: an ideal $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ obtained by restricting the initial of the Plücker ideal to a smaller polynomial ring, and a toric ideal defined as the kernel of a monomial map $φ_\ell|_w^v$. We first characterise the monomial-free ideals of form $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$. Then we construct a family of tableaux in bijection with semi-standard Young tableaux which leads to a monomial basis for the corresponding quotient ring. Finally, we prove that when $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ is monomial-free and the initial ideal in$_{{\bf w}_\ell}(I(X_w^v))$ is quadratically generated, then all three ideals in$_{{\bf w}_\ell}(I(X_w^v))$, $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ and ker$(φ_\ell|_w^v)$ coincide, and provide a toric degeneration of $X_w^v$.
Matroid stratifications of hypergraph varieties, their realization spaces, and discrete conditional independence models
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices Volume 2023 (2023), 18958--19019 • View PublicationBIB
We study varieties associated to hypergraphs from the point of view of projective geometry and matroid theory. We describe their decompositions into matroid varieties, which may be reducible and can have arbitrary singularities by the Mnëv--Sturmfels universality theorem. We focus on various families of hypergraph varieties for which we explicitly compute an irredundant irreducible decomposition. Our main findings in this direction are threefold: (1) we describe minimal matroids of such hypergraphs; (2) we prove that the varieties of these matroids are irreducible and their union is the hypergraph variety; and (3) we show that every such matroid is realizable over real numbers. As corollaries, we give conceptual decompositions of various, previously-studied, varieties associated with graphs, hypergraphs, and adjacent minors of generic matrices. In particular, our decomposition strategy gives immediate matroid interpretations of the irreducible components of multiple families of varieties associated to conditional independence (CI) models in statistical theory and unravels their symmetric structures which hugely simplifies the computations.

Combinatorial generation via permutation languages. III. Rectangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A generic rectangulation is a partition of a rectangle into finitely many interior-disjoint rectangles, such that no four rectangles meet in a point. In this work we present a versatile algorithmic framework for exhaustively generating a large variety of different classes of generic rectangulations. Our algorithms work under very mild assumptions, and apply to a large number of rectangulation classes known from the literature, such as generic rectangulations, diagonal rectangulations, 1-sided/area-universal, block-aligned rectangulations, and their guillotine variants, including aspect-ratio-universal rectangulations. They also apply to classes of rectangulations that are characterized by avoiding certain patterns, and in this work we initiate a systematic investigation of pattern avoidance in rectangulations. Our generation algorithms are efficient, in some cases even loopless or constant amortized time, i.e., each new rectangulation is generated in constant time in the worst case or on average, respectively. Moreover, the Gray codes we obtain are cyclic, and sometimes provably optimal, in the sense that they correspond to a Hamilton cycle on the skeleton of an underlying polytope. These results are obtained by encoding rectangulations as permutations, and by applying our recently developed permutation language framework.

The isomorphism problem for Schubert varieties
Schubert varieties in the full flag variety of Kac-Moody type are indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group. We give a practical criterion for when two such Schubert varieties (from potentially different flag varieties) are isomorphic, in terms of the Cartan matrix and reduced words for the indexing Weyl group elements. As a corollary, we show that two such Schubert varieties are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism between their integral cohomology rings that preserves the Schubert basis.

On generalized Steinberg theory for type AIII
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 6 (2023), no. 1, 165-195 • View PublicationBIB
Given a symmetric pair $(G,K)=(\mathrm{GL}_{p+q}(\mathbb{C}),\mathrm{GL}_{p}(\mathbb{C})\times \mathrm{GL}_{q}(\mathbb{C}))$ of type AIII, we consider the diagonal action of $K$ on the double flag variety $\mathfrak{X}=\mathrm{Grass}(\mathbb{C}^{p+q},r)\times K/B_K$ whose first factor is a Grassmann variety for $G$ and whose second factor is a full flag variety of $K$. There is a finite number of orbits for this action, and our first result is a description of these orbits: parametrization, dimensions, closure relations, and cover relations. Specifically, the orbits are parametrized by certain pairs of partial permutations. Each orbit in $\mathfrak{X}$ gives rise to a conormal bundle. As in the references [5] and [6], by using the moment map associated to the action, we define a so-called symmetrized Steinberg map, respectively an exotic Steinberg map, which assigns to each such conormal bundle (thus to each orbit) a nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of $K$, respectively in the Cartan complement of that Lie algebra. Our main result is an explicit description of these Steinberg maps in terms of combinatorial algorithms on partial permutations, extending the classical Robinson--Schensted procedure on permutations. This is a thorough generalization of the results in [5], where we supposed $p=q=r$ and considered orbits of special forms.
Tautological classes of matroids

We introduce certain torus-equivariant classes on permutohedral varieties which we call "tautological classes of matroids" as a new geometric framework for studying matroids. Using this framework, we unify and extend many recent developments in matroid theory arising from its interaction with algebraic geometry. We achieve this by establishing a Chow-theoretic description and a log-concavity property for a 4-variable transformation of the Tutte polynomial, and by establishing an exceptional Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch-type formula for permutohedral varieties that translates between K-theory and Chow theory.

Rigid Gorenstein toric Fano varieties arising from directed graphs
Published in Collectanea Mathematica 74 (2023), 333--351 • View PublicationBIB
A directed edge polytope $\mathcal{A}_G$ is a lattice polytope arising from root system $A_n$ and a finite directed graph $G$. If every directed edge of $G$ belongs to a directed cycle in $G$, then $\mathcal{A}_G$ is terminal and reflexive, that is, one can associate this polytope to a Gorenstein toric Fano variety $X_G$ with terminal singularities. It is shown by Totaro that a toric Fano variety which is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$ is rigid. In the present paper, we classify all directed graphs $G$ such that $X_G$ is a toric Fano variety which is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$.

Components of symmetric wide-matrix varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if X_n is a variety of cxn-matrices that is stable under the group Sym([n]) of column permutations and if forgetting the last column maps X_n into X_{n-1}, then the number of Sym([n])-orbits on irreducible components of X_n is a quasipolynomial in n for all sufficiently large n. To this end, we introduce the category of affine FI^op-schemes of width one, review existing literature on such schemes, and establish several new structural results about them. In particular, we show that under a shift and a localisation, any width-one FI^op-scheme becomes of product form, where X_n=Y^n for some scheme Y in affine c-space. Furthermore, to any FI^op-scheme of width one we associate a component functor from the category FI of finite sets with injections to the category PF of finite sets with partially defined maps. We present a combinatorial model for these functors and use this model to prove that Sym([n])-orbits of components of X_n, for all n, correspond bijectively to orbits of a groupoid acting on the integral points in certain rational polyhedral cones. Using the orbit-counting lemma for groupoids and theorems on quasipolynomiality of lattice point counts, this yields our Main Theorem.

Critical varieties in the Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of spaces called critical varieties. Each critical variety is a subset of one of the positroid varieties in the Grassmannian. The combinatorics of positroid varieties is captured by the dimer model on a planar bipartite graph $G$, and the critical variety is obtained by restricting to Kenyon's critical dimer model associated to a family of isoradial embeddings of $G$. This model is invariant under square/spider moves on $G$, and we give an explicit boundary measurement formula for critical varieties which does not depend on the choice of $G$. This extends our recent results for the critical Ising model, and simultaneously also includes the case of critical electrical networks. We systematically develop the basic properties of critical varieties. In particular, we study their real and totally positive parts, the combinatorics of the associated strand diagrams, and introduce a shift map motivated by the connection to zonotopal tilings and scattering amplitudes.

Kronecker Products, Low-Depth Circuits, and Matrix Rigidity
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a matrix $M$ and a positive integer $r$, the rank $r$ rigidity of $M$ is the smallest number of entries of $M$ which one must change to make its rank at most $r$. There are many known applications of rigidity lower bounds to a variety of areas in complexity theory, but fewer known applications of rigidity upper bounds. In this paper, we use rigidity upper bounds to prove new upper bounds in a few different models of computation. Our results include: $\bullet$ For any $d> 1$, and over any field $\mathbb{F}$, the $N \times N$ Walsh-Hadamard transform has a depth-$d$ linear circuit of size $O(d \cdot N^{1 + 0.96/d})$. This circumvents a known lower bound of $Ω(d \cdot N^{1 + 1/d})$ for circuits with bounded coefficients over $\mathbb{C}$ by Pudlák (2000), by using coefficients of magnitude polynomial in $N$. Our construction also generalizes to linear transformations given by a Kronecker power of any fixed $2 \times 2$ matrix. $\bullet$ The $N \times N$ Walsh-Hadamard transform has a linear circuit of size $\leq (1.81 + o(1)) N \log_2 N$, improving on the bound of $\approx 1.88 N \log_2 N$ which one obtains from the standard fast Walsh-Hadamard transform. $\bullet$ A new rigidity upper bound, showing that the following classes of matrices are not rigid enough to prove circuit lower bounds using Valiant's approach: $-$ for any field $\mathbb{F}$ and any function $f : \{0,1\}^n \to \mathbb{F}$, the matrix $V_f \in \mathbb{F}^{2^n \times 2^n}$ given by, for any $x,y \in \{0,1\}^n$, $V_f[x,y] = f(x \wedge y)$, and $-$ for any field $\mathbb{F}$ and any fixed-size matrices $M_1, \ldots, M_n \in \mathbb{F}^{q \times q}$, the Kronecker product $M_1 \otimes M_2 \otimes \cdots \otimes M_n$. This generalizes recent results on non-rigidity, using a simpler approach which avoids needing the polynomial method.

Partition and Analytic Rank are Equivalent over Large Fields
Published in Duke Mathematical Journal 172 (2023), 2433-2470 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the partition rank and the analytic rank of tensors are equal up to a constant, over finite fields of any characteristic and any large enough cardinality depending on the analytic rank. Moreover, we show that a plausible improvement of our field cardinality requirement would imply that the ranks are equal up to 1+o(1) in the exponent over every finite field. At the core of the proof is a technique for lifting decompositions of multilinear polynomials in an open subset of an algebraic variety, and a technique for finding a large subvariety that retains all rational points such that at least one of these points satisfies a finite-field analogue of genericity with respect to it. Proving the equivalence between these two ranks, ideally over fixed finite fields, is a central question in additive combinatorics, and was reiterated by multiple authors. As a corollary we prove, allowing the field to depend on the value of the norm, the Polynomial Gowers Inverse Conjecture in the d vs. d-1 case.
