A unifying poset perspective on alternating sign matrices, plane partitions, Catalan objects, tournaments, and tableaux
Published in Adv Appl Math 46 (2011), no. 4, 583-609 • Search Publication
Alternating sign matrices (ASMs) are square matrices with entries 0, 1, or -1 whose rows and columns sum to 1 and whose nonzero entries alternate in sign. We present a unifying perspective on ASMs and other combinatorial objects by studying a certain tetrahedral poset and its subposets. We prove the order ideals of these subposets are in bijection with a variety of interesting combinatorial objects, including ASMs, totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs), staircase shaped semistandard Young tableaux, Catalan objects, tournaments, and totally symmetric plane partitions. We prove product formulas counting these order ideals and give the rank generating function of some of the corresponding lattices of order ideals. We also prove an expansion of the tournament generating function as a sum over TSSCPPs. This result is analogous to a result of Robbins and Rumsey expanding the tournament generating function as a sum over alternating sign matrices.

On A Generalization of "Eight Blocks to Madness"

We consider a puzzle such that a set of colored cubes is given as an instance. Each cube has unit length on each edge and its surface is colored so that what we call the Surface Color Condition is satisfied. Given a palette of six colors, the condition requires that each face should have exactly one color and all faces should have different colors from each other. The puzzle asks to compose a 2x2x2 cube that satisfies the Surface Color Condition from eight suitable cubes in the instance. Note that cubes and solutions have 30 varieties respectively. In this paper, we give answers to three problems on the puzzle: (i) For every subset of the 30 solutions, is there an instance that has the subset exactly as its solution set? (ii) Create a maximum sized infeasible instance (i.e., one having no solution). (iii) Create a minimum sized universal instance (i.e., one having all 30 solutions). We solve the problems with the help of a computer search. We show that the answer to (i) is no. For (ii) and (iii), we show examples of the required instances, where their sizes are 23 and 12, respectively. The answer to (ii) solves one of the open problems that were raised in [E.Berkove et al., "An Analysis of the (Colored Cubes)^3 Puzzle," Discrete Mathematics, 308 (2008) pp. 1033-1045].

An iterated residue perspective on stable Grothendieck polynomials
Grothendieck polynomials are important objects in the study of the $K$-theory of flag varieties. Their many remarkable properties have been studied in the context of algebraic geometry and tableaux combinatorics. We explore a new tool, similar to generating sequences, which we call the iterated residue technique. We prove new formulas on the calculus of iterated residues and use them to prove straightening laws and multiplication formulas for stable Grothendieck polynomials. As a further application of our method, we give new proofs that the $K$-Pieri rule and the expansions of Grothendieck polynomials in the Schur basis both exhibit alternating signs. As a consequence, we observe that our method implies a new combinatorial statement of the $K$-Pieri rule. Our results indicate that the iterated residue technique should be further explored as a new line of attack on open conjectures regarding positivity and stability, for example of quiver polynomials and Thom polynomials, in $K$-theory.
New sum-product type estimates over finite fields
Published in Adv. Math. 293 (2016) 589-605 • View PublicationBIB
Let $F$ be a field with positive odd characteristic $p$. We prove a variety of new sum-product type estimates over $F$. They are derived from the theorem that the number of incidences between $m$ points and $n$ planes in the projective three-space $PG(3,F)$, with $m\geq n=O(p^2)$, is $$O( m\sqrt{n} + km ),$$ where $k$ denotes the maximum number of collinear planes. The main result is a significant improvement of the state-of-the-art sum-product inequality over fields with positive characteristic, namely that \begin{equation}\label{mres} |A\pm A|+|A\cdot A| =Ω\left(|A|^{1+\frac{1}{5}}\right), \end{equation} for any $A$ such that $|A|<p^{\frac{5}{8}}.$

Billey-Postnikov decompositions and the fibre bundle structure of Schubert varieties
Published in Math. Ann. (2016) 366 (1): 31-55 • View PublicationBIB
A theorem of Ryan and Wolper states that a type A Schubert variety is smooth if and only if it is an iterated fibre bundle of Grassmannians. We extend this theorem to arbitrary finite type, showing that a Schubert variety in a generalized flag variety is rationally smooth if and only if it is an iterated fibre bundle of rationally smooth Grassmannian Schubert varieties. The proof depends on deep combinatorial results of Billey-Postnikov on Weyl groups. We determine all smooth and rationally smooth Grassmannian Schubert varieties, and give a new proof of Peterson's theorem that all simply-laced rationally smooth Schubert varieties are smooth. Taken together, our results give a fairly complete geometric description of smooth and rationally smooth Schubert varieties using primarily combinatorial methods.

Crystal approach to affine Schubert calculus
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2016) 2016 (8): 2239-2294 • View PublicationBIB
We apply crystal theory to affine Schubert calculus, Gromov-Witten invariants for the complete flag manifold, and the positroid stratification of the positive Grassmannian. We introduce operators on decompositions of elements in the type-$A$ affine Weyl group and produce a crystal reflecting the internal structure of the generalized Young modules whose Frobenius image is represented by stable Schubert polynomials. We apply the crystal framework to products of a Schur function with a $k$-Schur function, consequently proving that a subclass of 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of complete flag varieties for $\mathbb C^n$ enumerate the highest weight elements under these operators. Included in this class are the Schubert structure constants in the (quantum) product of a Schubert polynomial with a Schur function $s_λ$ for all $|λ^\vee|< n$. Another by-product gives a highest weight formulation for various fusion coefficients of the Verlinde algebra and for the Schubert decomposition of certain positroid classes.

A general theory of Wilf-equivalence for Catalan structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The existence of apparently coincidental equalities (also called Wilf-equivalences) between the enumeration sequences, or generating functions, of various hereditary classes of combinatorial structures has attracted significant interest. We investigate such coincidences among non-crossing matchings and a variety of other Catalan structures including Dyck paths, 231-avoiding permutations and plane forests. In particular we consider principal classes defined by not containing an occurrence of a single given structure. An easily computed equivalence relation among structures is described such that if two structures are equivalent then the associated principal classes have the same enumeration sequence. We give an asymptotic estimate of the number of equivalence classes of this relation among structures of a given size and show that it is exponentially smaller than the corresponding Catalan number. In other words these "coincidental" equalities are in fact very common among principal classes. Our results also allow us to prove, in a unified and bijective manner, several known Wilf-equivalences from the literature.
Manipulative waiters with probabilistic intuition
Published • View PublicationBIB
For positive integers $n$ and $q$ and a monotone graph property $\cA$, we consider the two player, perfect information game $\WC(n,q,\cA)$, which is defined as follows. The game proceeds in rounds. In each round, the first player, called Waiter, offers the second player, called Client, $q+1$ edges of the complete graph $K_n$ which have not been offered previously. Client then chooses one of these edges which he keeps and the remaining $q$ edges go back to Waiter. If at the end of the game, the graph which consists of the edges chosen by Client satisfies the property $\cA$, then Waiter is declared the winner; otherwise Client wins the game. In this paper we study such games (also known as Picker-Chooser games) for a variety of natural graph theoretic parameters, such as the size of a largest component or the length of a longest cycle. In particular, we describe a phase transition type phenomenon which occurs when the parameter $q$ is close to $n$ and is reminiscent of phase transition phenomena in random graphs. Namely, we prove that if $q \leq (1 - \varepsilon) n$, then Client can avoid connected components of order $c \varepsilon^{-2} \ln n$ for some absolute constant $c > 0$, whereas, for $q \geq (1 + \varepsilon) n$, Waiter can force a giant, linearly sized, connected component in Client's graph. We also prove that Waiter can force Client's graph to be pancyclic for every $q \leq c n$, where $c > 0$ is an appropriate constant.

Grossberg-Karshon twisted cubes and hesitant walk avoidance
Published in Pacific J. Math. 278 (2015) 119-136 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a complex semisimple simply connected linear algebraic group. Let $λ$ be a dominant weight for $G$ and $\mathcal{I} = (i_1, i_2, \ldots, i_n)$ a word decomposition for an element $w = s_{i_1} s_{i_2} \cdots s_{i_n}$ of the Weyl group of $G$, where the $s_i$ are the simple reflections. In the 1990s, Grossberg and Karshon introduced a virtual lattice polytope associated to $λ$ and $\mathcal{I}$, which they called a twisted cube, whose lattice points encode (counted with sign according to a density function) characters of representations of $G$. In recent work, the first author and Jihyeon Yang prove that the Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted (so the support of the density function is a closed convex polytope) precisely when a certain torus-invariant divisor on a toric variety, constructed from the data of $λ$ and $\mathcal{I}$, is basepoint-free. This corresponds to the situation in which the Grossberg-Karshon character formula is a true combinatorial formula in the sense that there are no terms appearing with a minus sign. In this note, we translate this toric-geometric condition to the combinatorics of $\mathcal{I}$ and $λ$. More precisely, we introduce the notion of hesitant $λ$-walks and then prove that the associated Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted precisely when $\mathcal{I}$ is hesitant-$λ$-walk-avoiding.

Spaces of Hermitian operators with simple spectra and their finite-order cohomology
The topology of spaces of Hermitian operators in $C^n$ with non-simple spectra was studied by V.Arnold in a relation with the theory of adiabatic connections and the quantum Hall effect. The natural filtration of these spaces by the sets of operators with fixed numbers of eigenvalues defines the spectral sequence, providing interesting combinatorial and homological information on this stratification. We construct a different spectral sequence, also counting the homology groups of these spaces and based on the universal techniques of {\em topological order complexes} and resolutions of algebraic varieties, generalizing the combinatorial inclusion-exclusion formula and similar to the construction of finite degree knot invariants. This spectral sequence degenerates at the term $E_1$, is (conjecturally) multiplicative, and as $n$ grows then it converges to a stable spectral sequence counting the cohomology of the space of infinite Hermitian operators without multiple eigenvalues, all whose terms $E^{p,q}_r$ are finitely generated. It allows us to define the finite degree cohomology classes of this space, and to apply the well-known facts and methods of the topological theory of flag manifolds to the problems of geometrical combinatorics, especially concerning the continuous partially ordered sets of subspaces and flags.

The symplectic plactic monoid, crystals, and MV cycles

We study cells in generalised Bott-Samelson varieties for type C. These cells are parametrised by certain galleries in the affine building. We define a set of readable galleries - we show that the closure in the affine Grassmannian associated to a gallery in this set is an MV cycle. This then defines a map from the set of readable galeries to the set of MV cycles, which we show to be a morphism of crystals. We further compute the fibres of this map in terms of the Littelmann path model.

Beta-gamma system, pure spinors and Hilbert series of arc spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Algorithms are presented for calculating the partition function of constrained beta-gamma systems in terms of the generating functions of the individual fields of the theory, the latter obtained as the Hilbert series of the arc space of the algebraic variety defined by the constraint. Examples of a beta-gamma system on a complex surface with an $A_1$ singularity and pure spinors are worked out and compared with existing results.

The combinatorics and topology of proper toric maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the topology of toric maps. We show that if $f\colon X\to Y$ is a proper toric morphism, with $X$ simplicial, then the cohomology of every fiber of $f$ is pure and of Hodge-Tate type. When the map is a fibration, we give an explicit formula for the Betti numbers of the fibers in terms of a relative version of the $f$-vector, extending the usual formula for the Betti numbers of a simplicial complete toric variety. We then describe the Decomposition Theorem for a toric fibration, giving in particular a nonnegative combinatorial invariant attached to each cone in the fan of $Y$, which is positive precisely when the corresponding closed subset of $Y$ appears as a support in the Decomposition Theorem. The description of this invariant involves the stalks of the intersection cohomology complexes on $X$ and $Y$, but in the case when both $X$ and $Y$ are simplicial, there is a simple formula in terms of the relative $f$-vector.

Refined curve counting with tropical geometry
Published in Compositio Math. 152 (2016) 115-151 • View PublicationBIB
The Severi degree is the degree of the Severi variety parametrizing plane curves of degree d with delta nodes. Recently, Göttsche and Shende gave two refinements of Severi degrees, polynomials in a variable y, which are conjecturally equal, for large d. At y = 1, one of the refinements, the relative Severi degree, specializes to the (non-relative) Severi degree. We give a tropical description of the refined Severi degrees, in terms of a refined tropical curve count for all toric surfaces. We also refine the equivalent count of floor diagrams for Hirzebruch and rational ruled surfaces. Our description implies that, for fixed delta, the refined Severi degrees are polynomials in d and y, for large d. As a consequence, we show that, for delta <= 10 and all d, both refinements of Göttsche and Shende agree and equal our refined counts of tropical curves and floor diagrams.

Tropical Geometric Compactification of Moduli, I - $M_g$ case -
Published • View PublicationBIB
We compactify the classical moduli variety of compact Riemann surfaces by attaching moduli of (metrized) graphs as boundary. The compactifications do not admit the structure of varieties and patch together to form a big connected moduli space in which $\sqcup_{g} M_{g}$ is open dense. The metrized graphs, which are often studied as "tropical curves", are obtained as Gromov-Hausdorff collapse by fixing diameters of the hyperbolic metrics of the Riemann surfaces. This phenomenon can be also seen as an archemidean analogue of the tropicalization of Berkovich analytification of $M_{g}$ (cf., [ACP]).

Cluster Algebras and the Positive Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Plabic graphs are intimately connected to the positroid stratification of the positive Grassmannian. The duals to these graphs are quivers, and it is possible to associate to them cluster algebras. For the top-cell graph of $Gr_{+}(k,n)$, this cluster algebra is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the corresponding positroid variety. We prove that the same statement holds for plabic graphs describing lower dimensional cells. In this way we obtain a map from the positroid strata onto cluster subalgebras of $Gr_{+}(k,n)$. We explore some of the consequences of this map for tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory.

Bruhat Interval Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let u and v be permutations on n letters, with u <= v in Bruhat order. A Bruhat interval polytope Q_{u,v} is the convex hull of all permutation vectors z = (z(1), z(2),...,z(n)) with u <= z <= v. Note that when u=e and v=w_0 are the shortest and longest elements of the symmetric group, Q_{e,w_0} is the classical permutohedron. Bruhat interval polytopes were studied recently by Kodama and the second author, in the context of the Toda lattice and the moment map on the flag variety. In this paper we study combinatorial aspects of Bruhat interval polytopes. For example, we give an inequality description and a dimension formula for Bruhat interval polytopes, and prove that every face of a Bruhat interval polytope is a Bruhat interval polytope. A key tool in the proof of the latter statement is a generalization of the well-known lifting property for Coxeter groups. Motivated by the relationship between the lifting property and R-polynomials, we also give a generalization of the standard recurrence for R-polynomials. Finally, we define a more general class of polytopes called Bruhat interval polytopes for G/P, which are moment map images of (closures of) totally positive cells in the non-negative part of G/P, and are a special class of Coxeter matroid polytopes. Using tools from total positivity and the Gelfand-Serganova stratification, we show that the face of any Bruhat interval polytope for G/P is again a Bruhat interval polytope for G/P.

Pieri rule for the affine flag variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the affine Pieri rule for the cohomology of the affine flag variety conjectured by Lam, Lapointe, Morse and Shimozono. We study the cap operator on the affine nilHecke ring that is motivated by Kostant and Kumar's work on the equivariant cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cap operators for Pieri elements are the same as Pieri operators defined by Berg, Saliola and Serrano. This establishes the affine Pieri rule.
