Detection of Core-Periphery Structure in Networks Using Spectral Methods and Geodesic Paths
Published in European Journal of Applied Mathematics, Volume 27, Issue 6 (Network Analysis and Modelling) December 2016, pp. 846-887 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce several novel and computationally efficient methods for detecting "core--periphery structure" in networks. Core--periphery structure is a type of mesoscale structure that includes densely-connected core vertices and sparsely-connected peripheral vertices. Core vertices tend to be well-connected both among themselves and to peripheral vertices, which tend not to be well-connected to other vertices. Our first method, which is based on transportation in networks, aggregates information from many geodesic paths in a network and yields a score for each vertex that reflects the likelihood that a vertex is a core vertex. Our second method is based on a low-rank approximation of a network's adjacency matrix, which can often be expressed as a tensor-product matrix. Our third approach uses the bottom eigenvector of the random-walk Laplacian to infer a coreness score and a classification into core and peripheral vertices. We also design an objective function to (1) help classify vertices into core or peripheral vertices and (2) provide a goodness-of-fit criterion for classifications into core versus peripheral vertices. To examine the performance of our methods, we apply our algorithms to both synthetically-generated networks and a variety of networks constructed from real-world data sets.

Justifying the small-world phenomenon via random recursive trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new technique for proving logarithmic upper bounds for diameters of evolving random graph models, which is based on defining a coupling between random graphs and variants of random recursive trees. The advantage of the technique is three-fold: it is quite simple and provides short proofs, it is applicable to a broad variety of models including those incorporating preferential attachment, and it provides bounds with small constants. We illustrate this by proving, for the first time, logarithmic upper bounds for the diameters of the following well known models: the forest fire model, the copying model, the PageRank-based selection model, the Aiello-Chung-Lu models, the generalized linear preference model, directed scale-free graphs, the Cooper-Frieze model, and random unordered increasing $k$-trees. Our results shed light on why the small-world phenomenon is observed in so many real-world graphs.

Multigraded Hilbert function and toric complete intersection codes
Published in Journal of Algebra 459 (2016) 446-467 • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be a complete $n$-dimensional simplicial toric variety with homogeneous coordinate ring $S$. We study the multigraded Hilbert function $H_Y$ of reduced $0$-dimensional subschemes $Y$ in $X$. We provide explicit formulas and prove non-decreasing and stabilization properties of $H_Y$ when $Y$ is a $0$-dimensional complete intersection in $X$. We apply our results to computing the dimension of some evaluation codes on $0$-dimensional complete intersection in simplicial toric varieties.

The structure of dual Schubert union codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we prove that Schubert union codes are Tanner codes constructed with the point--line incidence geometry that Schubert varieties inherit from the Grassmannian. We do this by first finding an lengthening algorithm for Tanner codes. This algorithm finds the entries of a codeword of a Tanner code from the entries in a given subset of its positions. We find sufficient conditions on the initial set and the initial positions such that a codeword is determined from the component codes only. We find an iterative and systematic encoding algorithm for Schubert union codes with linear complexity. With this encoder we also determine the minimum distance of Schubert union codes.

Tropical compactification and the Gromov--Witten theory of $\mathbb{P}^1$
Published in Selecta Mathematica (2017) Vol. 23 Issue 2 pp 1027-1060 • View PublicationBIB
We use tropical and nonarchimedean geometry to study the moduli space of genus $0$ stable maps to $\mathbb{P}^1$ relative to two points. This space is exhibited as a tropical compactification in a toric variety. Moreover, the fan of this toric variety may be interpreted as a moduli space for tropical relative stable maps with the same discrete data. As a consequence, we confirm an expectation of Bertram and the first two authors, that the tropical Hurwitz cycles are tropicalizations of classical Hurwitz cycles. As a second application, we obtain a full descendant correspondence for genus $0$ relative invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$.

Critical set of the master function and characteristic variety of the associated Gauss-Manin differential equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a weighted family of $n$ parallelly transported hyperplanes in a $k$-dimensioinal affine space and describe the characteristic variety of the Gauss-Manin differential equations for associated hypergeometric integrals. The characteristic variety is given as the zero set of Laurent polynomials, whose coefficients are determined by weights and the associated point in the Grassmannian Gr$(k,n)$. The Laurent polynomials are in involution. An intermediate object between the differential equations and the characteristic variety is the algebra of functions on the critical set of the associated master function. We construct a linear isomorphism between the vector space of the Gauss-Manin differential equations and the algebra of functions. The isomorphism allows us to describe the characteristic variety. It also allowed us to define an integral structure on the vector space of the algebra and the associated (combinatorial) connection on the family of such algebras.

Cohomology classes of interval positroid varieties and a conjecture of Liu
Published • View PublicationBIB
To each finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ (a diagram), one can associate a subvariety of a complex Grassmannian (a diagram variety), and a representation of a symmetric group (a Specht module). Liu has conjectured that the cohomology class of a diagram variety is represented by the Frobenius characteristic of the corresponding Specht module. We give a counterexample to this conjecture. However, we show that for the diagram variety of a permutation diagram, Liu's conjectured cohomology class $σ$ is at least an upper bound on the actual class $τ$, in the sense that $σ- τ$ is a nonnegative linear combination of Schubert classes. To do this, we exhibit the appropriate diagram variety as a component in a degeneration of one of Knutson's interval positroid varieties (up to Grassmann duality). A priori, the cohomology classes of these interval positroid varieties are represented by affine Stanley symmetric functions. We give a different formula for these classes as ordinary Stanley symmetric functions, one with the advantage of being Schur-positive and compatible with inclusions between Grassmannians.

Minuscule Schubert varieties: Poset polytopes, PBW-degenerated Demazure modules, and Kogan faces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a family of posets and the associated chain and order polytopes. We identify the order polytope as a maximal Kogan face in a Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope of a multiple of a fundamental weight. We show that the character of such a Kogan face equals to the character of a Demazure module which occurs in the irreducible representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ having highest weight multiple of fundamental weight and for any such Demazure module there exists a corresponding poset and associated maximal Kogan face. We prove that the chain polytope parametrizes a monomial basis of the associated PBW-graded Demazure module and further, that the Demazure module is a favourable module, e.g. interesting geometric properties are governed by combinatorics of convex polytopes. Thus, we obtain for any minuscule Schubert variety a flat degeneration into a toric projective variety which is projectively normal and arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the Weyl group element such that the toric variety associated to the chain polytope and the toric variety associated to the order polytope are isomorphic.

On consecutive edge magic total labeling of connected bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Since Sedlá$\breve{\mbox{c}}$ek introduced the notion of magic labeling of a graph in 1963, a variety of magic labelings of a graph have been defined and studied. In this paper, we study consecutive edge magic labelings of a connected bipartite graph. We make a very useful observation that there are only four possible values of $b$ for which a connected bipartite graph has a $b$-edge consecutive magic labeling. On the basis of this fundamental result, we deduce various interesting results on consecutive edge magic labelings of bipartite graphs, especially caterpillars and lobsters, which extends the results given by Sugeng and Miller.

An upper bound on the number of rational points of arbitrary projective varieties over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an upper bound on the number of rational points of an arbitrary Zariski closed subset of a projective space over a finite field. This bound depends only on the dimensions and degrees of the irreducible components and holds for very general varieties, even reducible and non equidimensional. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Ghorpade and Lachaud on the maximal number of rational points of an equidimensional projective variety.

How to repair tropicalizations of plane curves using modifications
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tropical geometry is sensitive to embeddings of algebraic varieties inside toric varieties. The purpose of this paper is to advertise tropical modifications as a tool to locally repair bad embeddings of plane curves, allowing the re-embedded tropical curve to better reflect the geometry of the input curve. Our approach is based on the close connection between analytic curves (in the sense of Berkovich) and tropical curves. We investigate the effect of these tropical modifications on the tropicalization map defined on the analytification of the given curve. Our study is motivated by the case of plane elliptic cubics, where good embeddings are characterized in terms of the j-invariant. Given a plane elliptic cubic whose tropicalization contains a cycle, we present an effective algorithm, based on non-Archimedean methods, to linearly re-embed the curve in dimension 4 so that its tropicalization reflects the j-invariant. We give an alternative elementary proof of this result by interpreting the initial terms of the A-discriminant of the defining equation as a local discriminant in the Newton subdivision.

The Enumerative Geometry of Hyperplane Arrangements
We study enumerative questions on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}(L)$ of hyperplane arrangements with a given intersection lattice $L$. Mnëv's universality theorem suggests that these moduli spaces can be arbitrarily complicated; indeed it is even difficult to compute the dimension $D =\dim \mathcal{M}(L)$. Embedding $\mathcal{M}(L)$ in a product of projective spaces, we study the degree $N=\mathrm{deg} \mathcal{M}(L)$, which can be interpreted as the number of arrangements in $\mathcal{M}(L)$ that pass through $D$ points in general position. For generic arrangements $N$ can be computed combinatorially and this number also appears in the study of the Chow variety of zero dimensional cycles. We compute $D$ and $N$ using Schubert calculus in the case where $L$ is the intersection lattice of the arrangement obtained by taking multiple cones over a generic arrangement. We also calculate the characteristic numbers for families of generic arrangements in $\mathbb{P}^2$ with 3 and 4 lines.

Chains in Weak Order Posets Associated to Involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The W-set of an element of a weak order poset is useful in the cohomological study of the closures of spherical subgroups in generalized flag varieties. We explicitly describe in a purely combinatorial manner the W-sets of the weak order posets of three different sets of involutions in the symmetric group, namely, the set of all involutions, the set of all fixed point free involutions, and the set of all involutions with signed fixed points (or "clans"). These distinguished sets of involutions parameterize Borel orbits in the classical symmetric spaces associated to the general linear group. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the maximal chains of an arbitrary lower order ideal in any of these three posets.

Laurent phenomenon for Landau-Ginzburg models of complete intersections in Grassmannians of planes
Published in Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 2017 Vol. 54, No. 5, 1527--1575 • View PublicationBIB
In a spirit of Givental's constructions Batyrev, Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim, and van Straten suggested Landau--Ginzburg models for smooth Fano complete intersections in Grassmannians and partial flag varieties as certain complete intersections in complex tori equipped with special functions called superpotentials. We provide a particular algorithm for constructing birational isomorphisms of these models for complete intersections in Grassmannians of planes with complex tori. In this case the superpotentials are given by Laurent polynomials. We study Givental's integrals for Landau--Ginzburg models suggested by Batyrev, Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim, and van Straten and show that they are periods for pencils of fibers of maps provided by Laurent polynomials we obtain. The algorithm we provide after minor modifications can be applied in a more general context.

Matroid theory for algebraic geometers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is a survey of matroid theory aimed at algebraic geometers. Matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear subspaces and hyperplane arrangements. Not all matroids come from linear subspaces; those that do are said to be representable. Still, one may apply linear algebraic constructions to non-representable matroids. There are a number of different definitions of matroids, a phenomenon known as cryptomorphism. In this survey, we begin by reviewing the classical definitions of matroids, develop operations in matroid theory, summarize some results in representability, and construct polynomial invariants of matroids. Afterwards, we focus on matroid polytopes, introduced by Gelfand-Goresky-MacPherson-Serganova, which give a cryptomorphic definition of matroids. We explain certain locally closed subsets of the Grassmannian, thin Schubert cells, which are labeled by matroids, and which have applications to representability, moduli problems, and invariants of matroids following Fink-Speyer. We explain how matroids can be thought of as cohomology classes in a particular toric variety, the permutohedral variety, by means of Bergman fans, and apply this description to give an exposition of the proof of log-concavity of the characteristic polynomial of representable matroids due to the author with Huh.

An affine deformation of the quantum cohomology ring of flag manifolds and periodic Toda lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the generalized flag manifold $G/B$ and the corresponding affine flag manifold $\mathcal{Fl}_G$. In this paper we use curve neighborhoods for Schubert varieties in $\mathcal{Fl}_G$ to construct certain affine Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathcal{Fl}_G$, and to obtain a family of "affine quantum Chevalley" operators $Λ_0, \ldots, Λ_n$ indexed by the simple roots in the affine root system of $G$. These operators act on the cohomology ring $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[q_0, \ldots,q_n]$. By analyzing commutativity and invariance properties of these operators we deduce the existence of two quantum cohomology rings, which satisfy properties conjectured earlier by Guest and Otofuji for $G= \mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The first quantum ring is a deformation of the subalgebra of $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ generated by divisors. The second ring, denoted $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$, deforms the ordinary quantum cohomology ring $\mathrm{QH}^*(G/B)$ by adding an affine quantum parameter $q_0$. We prove that $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ is a Frobenius algebra, and that the new quantum product determines a flat Dubrovin connection. Further, we develop an analogue of Givental and Kim formalism for this ring and we deduce a presentation of $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ by generators and relations. The ideal of relations is generated by the integrals of motion for the periodic Toda lattice associated to the dual of the extended Dynkin diagram of $G$.

Proof of a Conjectured Three-Valued Family of Weil Sums of Binomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider Weil sums of binomials of the form $W_{F,d}(a)=\sum_{x \in F} ψ(x^d-a x)$, where $F$ is a finite field, $ψ\colon F\to {\mathbb C}$ is the canonical additive character, $\gcd(d,|F^\times|)=1$, and $a \in F^\times$. If we fix $F$ and $d$ and examine the values of $W_{F,d}(a)$ as $a$ runs through $F^\times$, we always obtain at least three distinct values unless $d$ is degenerate (a power of the characteristic of $F$ modulo $|F^\times|$). Choices of $F$ and $d$ for which we obtain only three values are quite rare and desirable in a wide variety of applications. We show that if $F$ is a field of order $3^n$ with $n$ odd, and $d=3^r+2$ with $4 r \equiv 1 \pmod{n}$, then $W_{F,d}(a)$ assumes only the three values $0$ and $\pm 3^{(n+1)/2}$. This proves the 2001 conjecture of Dobbertin, Helleseth, Kumar, and Martinsen. The proof employs diverse methods involving trilinear forms, counting points on curves via multiplicative character sums, divisibility properties of Gauss sums, and graph theory.

A superdimension formula for gl(m|n) modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a formula for the superdimension of a finite-dimensional simple gl(m|n)-module using the Su-Zhang character formula. As a corollary, we obtain a simple algebraic proof of a conjecture of Kac-Wakimoto for gl(m|n), namely, a simple module has nonzero superdimension if and only if it has maximal degree of atypicality. This conjecture was proven originally by Serganova using the Duflo-Serganova associated variety.

PBW-degenerated Demazure modules and Schubert varieties for triangular elements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study certain faces of the normal polytope introduced by Feigin, Littelmann and the author whose lattice points parametrize a monomial basis of the PBW-degenerated of simple modules for $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$. We show that lattice points in these faces parametrize monomial bases of PBW-degenerated Demazure modules associated to Weyl group elements satisfying a certain closure property, for example Kempf elements. These faces are again normal polytopes and their Minkowski sum is compatible with tensor products, which implies that we obtain flat degenerations of the corresponding Schubert varieties to PBW degenerated and toric varieties.

Proof of Stasinski and Voll's Hyperoctahedral Group Conjecture
In a recent paper, Stasinski and Voll introduced a length-like statistic on hyperoctahedral groups and conjectured a product formula for this statistic's signed distribution over arbitrary quotients. Stasinski and Voll proved this conjecture for a few special types of quotients. We prove this conjecture in full, showing it holds for all quotients. In the case of signed permutations with at most one descent, this formula gives the Poincare polynomials for the varieties of symmetric matrices of a fixed rank.
