Given an essential semilattice congruence $\equiv$ on the left weak order of a Coxeter group $W$, we define the Coxeter stack-sorting operator ${\bf S}_\equiv:W\to W$ by ${\bf S}_\equiv(w)=w\left(π_\downarrow^\equiv(w)\right)^{-1}$, where $π_\downarrow^\equiv(w)$ is the unique minimal element of the congruence class of $\equiv$ containing $w$. When $\equiv$ is the sylvester congruence on the symmetric group $S_n$, the operator ${\bf S}_\equiv$ is West's stack-sorting map. When $\equiv$ is the descent congruence on $S_n$, the operator ${\bf S}_\equiv$ is the pop-stack-sorting map. We establish several general results about Coxeter stack-sorting operators, especially those acting on symmetric groups. For example, we prove that if $\equiv$ is an essential lattice congruence on $S_n$, then every permutation in the image of ${\bf S}_\equiv$ has at most $\left\lfloor\frac{2(n-1)}{3}\right\rfloor$ right descents; we also show that this bound is tight.
We then introduce analogues of permutree congruences in types $B$ and $\widetilde A$ and use them to isolate Coxeter stack-sorting operators $\mathtt{s}_B$ and $\widetilde{\hspace{.05cm}\mathtt{s}}$ that serve as canonical type-$B$ and type-$\widetilde A$ counterparts of West's stack-sorting map. We prove analogues of many known results about West's stack-sorting map for the new operators $\mathtt{s}_B$ and $\widetilde{\hspace{.05cm}\mathtt{s}}$. For example, in type $\widetilde A$, we obtain an analogue of Zeilberger's classical formula for the number of $2$-stack-sortable permutations in $S_n$.

Let $W$ be an irreducible Coxeter group. We define the Coxeter pop-stack-sorting operator $\mathsf{Pop}:W\to W$ to be the map that fixes the identity element and sends each nonidentity element $w$ to the meet of the elements covered by $w$ in the right weak order. When $W$ is the symmetric group $S_n$, $\mathsf{Pop}$ coincides with the pop-stack-sorting map. Generalizing a theorem about the pop-stack-sorting map due to Ungar, we prove that \[\sup\limits_{w\in W}\left|O_{\mathsf{Pop}}(w)\right|=h,\] where $h$ is the Coxeter number of $W$ (with $h=\infty$ if $W$ is infinite) and $O_f(w)$ denotes the forward orbit of $w$ under a map $f$. When $W$ is finite, this result is equivalent to the statement that the maximum number of terms appearing in the Brieskorn normal form of an element of $W$ is $h-1$. More generally, we define a map $f:W\to W$ to be compulsive if for every $w\in W$, $f(w)$ is less than or equal to $\mathsf{Pop}(w)$ in the right weak order. We prove that if $f$ is compulsive, then $\sup\limits_{w\in W}|O_f(w)|\leq h$. This result is new even for symmetric groups.
We prove that $2$-pop-stack-sortable elements in type $B$ are in bijection with $2$-pop-stack-sortable permutations in type $A$, which were enumerated by Pudwell and Smith. Claesson and Gudmundsson proved that for each fixed nonnegative integer $t$, the generating function that counts $t$-pop-stack-sortable permutations in type $A$ is rational; we establish analogous results in types $B$ and $\widetilde A$.

Let $\cX$ be a family of subsets of a finite set $E$. A matroid on $E$ is called an $\cX$-matroid if each set in $\cX$ is a circuit. We consider the problem of determining when there exists a unique maximal $\cX$-matroid in the weak order poset of all $\cX$-matroids on $E$, and characterizing its rank function when it exists.

The limit weak order on an affine Weyl group was introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy in their study of total positivity for loop groups. They showed that in the case of the affine symmetric group the minimal elements of this poset coincide with the infinite fully commutative reduced words and with infinite powers of Coxeter elements. We answer several open problems raised there by classifying minimal elements in all affine types and relating these elements to the classes of fully commutative and Coxeter elements. Interestingly, the infinite fully commutative elements correspond to the minuscule and cominuscule nodes of the Dynkin diagram, while the infinite Coxeter elements correspond to a single node, which we call the heavy node, in all affine types other than type $A$.
An order on circular permutations

Motivation coming from the study of affine Weyl groups, a structure of ranked poset is defined on the set of circular permutations in $S_n$ (that is, $n$-cycles). It is isomorphic to the poset of so-called admitted vectors, and to an interval in the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_n$ with the weak order. The poset is a semidistributive lattice, and the rank function, whose range is cubic in $n$, is computed by some special formula involving inversions. We prove also some links with Eulerian numbers, triangulations of an $n$-gon, and Young's lattice.

The character theory of symmetric groups, and the theory of symmetric functions, both make use of the combinatorics of Young tableaux, such as the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, Schuetzenberger's "jeu de taquin", and evacuation. In 1995 Poirier and the second author introduced some algebraic structures, different from the plactic monoid, which induce some products and coproducts of tableaux, with homomorphisms. Their starting point are the two dual Hopf algebras of permutations, introduced by the authors in 1995. In 2006 Aguiar and Sottile studied in more detail the Hopf algebra of permutations: among other things, they introduce a new basis, by Moebius inversion in the poset of weak order, that allows them to describe the primitive elements of the Hopf algebra of permutations. In the present note, by a similar method, we determine the primitive elements of the Poirier-Reutenauer algebra of tableaux, using a partial order on tableaux defined by Taskin.
Congruence Normality of Simplicial Hyperplane Arrangements via Oriented Matroids

A catalogue of simplicial hyperplane arrangements was first given by Grünbaum in 1971. These arrangements naturally generalize finite Coxeter arrangements and the weak order through the poset of regions. For simplicial arrangements, posets of regions are in fact lattices. We update Grünbaum's catalogue, providing normals and invariants for all known sporadic simplicial arrangements with up to 37 lines. The weak order is known to be congruence normal, and congruence normality for simplicial arrangements can be determined using polyhedral cones called shards.
In this article, we provide additional structure to the catalogue of simplicial hyperplane arrangements by determining which arrangements always/sometimes/never lead to congruence normal lattices of regions. To this end, we use oriented matroids to recast shards as covectors to determine congruence normality of large hyperplane arrangements. As a consequence of this approach we derive in particular which lattices of regions of sporadic simplicial arrangements of rank 3 are always congruence normal. We also show that lattices of regions from finite Weyl groupoids of any rank are congruence normal.

Ceballos and Pons generalized weak order on permutations to a partial order on certain labeled trees, thereby introducing a new class of lattices called $s$-weak order. They also generalized the Tamari lattice by defining a particular sublattice of $s$-weak order called the $s$-Tamari lattice. We prove that the homotopy type of each open interval in $s$-weak order and in the $s$-Tamari lattice is either a ball or sphere. We do this by giving $s$-weak order and the $s$-Tamari lattice a type of edge labeling known as an SB-labeling. We characterize which intervals are homotopy equivalent to spheres and which are homotopy equivalent to balls; we also determine the dimension of the spheres for the intervals yielding spheres.
Derivations of large classes of facet-defining inequalities of the weak order polytope using ranking structures

The study of ordering polytopes has been essential to the solution of various challenging combinatorial optimization problems. For instance, the incorporation of facet defining inequalities (FDIs) from these polytopes in branch-and-cut approaches represents among the most effective solution methodologies known to date for some of these problems. The weak order polytope, defined as the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of all binary orders on $n$ alternatives that are reflexive, transitive, and complete, has been particularly important for tackling problems in computational social choice, preference aggregation, and comparative probability. For the most part, FDIs for the weak order polytope have been obtained through enumeration and through derivation from FDIs of other combinatorial polytopes. This paper derives new classes of FDIs for the weak order polytope by utilizing the equivalent representation of a weak order as a ranking of $n$ objects that allows ties and by grouping characteristic vectors that share certain ranking structures. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a number of FDIs previously obtained through enumeration are actually special cases of these ranking-based FDIs.

For any lattice congruence of the weak order on permutations, N. Reading proved that gluing together the cones of the braid fan that belong to the same congruence class defines a complete fan, called a quotient fan, and V. Pilaud and F. Santos showed that it is the normal fan of a polytope, called a quotientope. In this paper, we provide a simpler approach to realize quotient fans based on Minkowski sums of elementary polytopes, called shard polytopes, which have remarkable combinatorial and geometric properties. In contrast to the original construction of quotientopes, this Minkowski sum approach extends to type $B$.
The Sperner property for $132$-avoiding intervals in the weak order

A well-known result of Stanley from 1980 implies that the weak order on a maximal parabolic quotient of the symmetric group $S_n$ has the Sperner property; this same property was recently established for the weak order on all of $S_n$ by Gaetz and Gao, resolving a long-open problem. In this paper we interpolate between these results by showing that the weak order on any parabolic quotient of $S_n$ (and more generally on any $132$-avoiding interval) has the Sperner property. This result is proven by exhibiting an action of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ respecting the weak order on these intervals. As a corollary we obtain a new formula for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. Our formula can be seen as a strong Bruhat order analogue of Macdonald's reduced word formula. This proof technique and formula generalize work of Hamaker, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt and Gaetz and Gao.
Interval parking functions

Interval parking functions (IPFs) are a generalization of ordinary parking functions in which each car is willing to park only in a fixed interval of spaces. Each interval parking function can be expressed as a pair $(a,b)$, where $a$ is a parking function and $b$ is a dual parking function. We say that a pair of permutations $(x,y)$ is \emph{reachable} if there is an IPF $(a,b)$ such that $x,y$ are the outcomes of $a,b$, respectively, as parking functions. Reachability is reflexive and antisymmetric, but not in general transitive. We prove that its transitive closure, the \emph{pseudoreachability order}, is precisely the bubble-sort order on the symmetric group $\Sym_n$, which can be expressed in terms of the normal form of a permutation in the sense of du~Cloux; in particular, it is isomorphic to the product of chains of lengths $2,\dots,n$. It is thus seen to be a special case of Armstrong's sorting order, which lies between the Bruhat and (left) weak orders.

The associahedron is classically constructed as a removahedron, i.e. by deleting inequalities in the facet description of the permutahedron. This removahedral construction extends to all permutreehedra (which interpolate between the permutahedron, the associahedron and the cube). Here, we investigate removahedra constructions for all quotientopes (which realize the lattice quotients of the weak order). On the one hand, we observe that the permutree fans are the only quotient fans realized by a removahedron. On the other hand, we show that any permutree fan can be realized by a removahedron constructed from any realization of the braid fan. Our results finally lead to a complete description of the type cone of the permutree fans.
Balance constants for Coxeter groups

The $1/3$-$2/3$ Conjecture, originally formulated in 1968, is one of the best-known open problems in the theory of posets, stating that the balance constant (a quantity determined by the linear extensions) of any non-total order is at least $1/3$. By reinterpreting balance constants of posets in terms of convex subsets of the symmetric group, we extend the study of balance constants to convex subsets $C$ of any Coxeter group. Remarkably, we conjecture that the lower bound of $1/3$ still applies in any finite Weyl group, with new and interesting equality cases appearing.
We generalize several of the main results towards the $1/3$-$2/3$ Conjecture to this new setting: we prove our conjecture when $C$ is a weak order interval below a fully commutative element in any acyclic Coxeter group (an generalization of the case of width-two posets), we give a uniform lower bound for balance constants in all finite Weyl groups using a new generalization of order polytopes to this context, and we introduce generalized semiorders for which we resolve the conjecture.
We hope this new perspective may shed light on the proper level of generality in which to consider the $1/3$-$2/3$ Conjecture, and therefore on which methods are likely to be successful in resolving it.
Fertility Monotonicity and Average Complexity of the Stack-Sorting Map

Let $\mathcal D_n$ denote the average number of iterations of West's stack-sorting map $s$ that are needed to sort a permutation in $S_n$ into the identity permutation $123\cdots n$. We prove that \[0.62433\approxλ\leq\liminf_{n\to\infty}\frac{\mathcal D_n}{n}\leq\limsup_{n\to\infty}\frac{\mathcal D_n}{n}\leq \frac{3}{5}(7-8\log 2)\approx 0.87289,\] where $λ$ is the Golomb-Dickman constant. Our lower bound improves upon West's lower bound of $0.23$, and our upper bound is the first improvement upon the trivial upper bound of $1$. We then show that fertilities of permutations increase monotonically upon iterations of $s$. More precisely, we prove that $|s^{-1}(σ)|\leq|s^{-1}(s(σ))|$ for all $σ\in S_n$, where equality holds if and only if $σ=123\cdots n$. This is the first theorem that manifests a law-of-diminishing-returns philosophy for the stack-sorting map that Bóna has proposed. Along the way, we note some connections between the stack-sorting map and the right and left weak orders on $S_n$.

We survey the recent study of involution Schubert polynomials and a modest generalization that we call degenerate involution Schubert polynomials. We cite several conditions when (degenerate) involution Schubert polynomials have simple factorization formulae. Such polynomials can be computed by traversing through chains in certain weak order posets, and we provide explicit descriptions of such chains in weak order for involutions and degenerate involutions. As an application, we give several examples of how certain multiplicity-free sums of Schubert polynomials factor completely into very simple linear factors.
Interval structures in the Bruhat and weak orders

We study the appearance of notable interval structures -- lattices, modular lattices, distributive lattices, and boolean lattices -- in both the Bruhat and weak orders of Coxeter groups. We collect and expand upon known results for principal order ideals, including pattern characterizations and enumerations for the symmetric group. This segues naturally into a similar analysis for arbitrary intervals, although the results are less characterizing for the Bruhat order at this generality. In counterpoint, however, we obtain a full characterization for intervals starting at rank one in the symmetric group, for each of the four structure types, in each of the two posets. Each category can be enumerated, with intriguing connections to Fibonacci and Catalan numbers. We conclude with suggestions for further directions and questions, including an interesting analysis of the intervals formed between a permutation and each generator in its support.

This paper deals with lattice congruences of the weak order on the symmetric group, and initiates the investigation of the cover graphs of the corresponding lattice quotients. These graphs also arise as the skeleta of the so-called quotientopes, a family of polytopes recently introduced by Pilaud and Santos [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 51:406-420, 2019], which generalize permutahedra, associahedra, hypercubes and several other polytopes. We prove that all of these graphs have a Hamilton path, which can be computed by a simple greedy algorithm. This is an application of our framework for exhaustively generating various classes of combinatorial objects by encoding them as permutations. We also characterize which of these graphs are vertex-transitive or regular via their arc diagrams, give corresponding precise and asymptotic counting results, and we determine their minimum and maximum degrees. Moreover, we investigate the relation between lattice congruences of the weak order and pattern-avoiding permutations.
Separable elements and splittings of Weyl groups

We continue the study of separable elements in finite Weyl groups. These elements generalize the well-studied class of separable permutations. We show that the multiplication map $W/U \times U \to W$ is a length-additive bijection, or splitting, of the Weyl group $W$ when $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order generated by a separable element; this generalizes a result for the symmetric group, answering an open problem of Wei.
For a generalized quotient of the symmetric group, we show that this multiplication map is a bijection if and only if $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order generated by a separable element, thereby classifying those generalized quotients which induce splittings of the symmetric group, resolving a problem of Björner and Wachs from 1988. We also prove that this map is always surjective when $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order. Interpreting these sets of permutations as linear extensions of 2-dimensional posets gives the first direct combinatorial proof of an inequality due originally to Sidorenko in 1991, answering an open problem Morales, Pak, and Panova. We also prove a new $q$-analog of Sidorenko's formula. All of these results are conjectured to extend to arbitrary finite Weyl groups.
Finally, we show that separable elements in $W$ are in bijection with the faces of all dimensions of several copies of the graph associahedron of the Dynkin diagram of $W$. This correspondence associates to each separable element $w$ a certain nested set; we give product formulas for the rank generating functions of the principal upper and lower order ideals generated by $w$ in terms of these nested sets, generalizing several known formulas.

A conjecture of Graver from 1991 states that the generic $3$-dimensional rigidity matroid is the unique maximal abstract $3$-rigidity matroid with respect to the weak order on matroids. Based on a close similarity between the generic $d$-dimensional rigidity matroid and the generic $C_{d-2}^{d-1}$-cofactor matroid from approximation theory, Whiteley made an analogous conjecture in 1996 that the generic $C_{d-2}^{d-1}$-cofactor matroid is the unique maximal abstract $d$-rigidity matroid for all $d\geq 2$. We verify the case $d=3$ of Whiteley's conjecture in this paper. A key step in our proof is to verify a second conjecture of Whiteley that the `double V-replacement operation' preserves independence in the generic $C_2^1$-cofactor matroid.
