We perform separation of variables for the symplectic Weyl character using Sklyanin's scheme. Viewing the characters as eigenfunctions of a quantum integrable system, we explicitly construct the separating operator using the Q-operator method. We also construct the inverse of the separating operator, as well as the factorised Hamiltonian.
Edge-intersection graphs of grid paths: the bend-number

We investigate edge-intersection graphs of paths in the plane grid, regarding a parameter called the bend-number. I.e., every vertex is represented by a grid path and two vertices are adjacent if and only if the two grid paths share at least one grid-edge. The bend-number is the minimum $k$ such that grid-paths with at most $k$ bends each suffice to represent a given graph. This parameter is related to the interval-number and the track-number of a graph. We show that for every $k$ there is a graph with bend-number $k$. Moreover we provide new upper and lower bounds of the bend-number of graphs in terms of degeneracy, treewidth, edge clique covers and the maximum degree. Furthermore we give bounds on the bend-number of $K_{m,n}$ and determine it exactly for some pairs of $m$ and $n$. Finally, we prove that recognizing single-bend graphs is NP-complete, providing the first such result in this field.
Betti numbers of smooth Schubert varieties and the remarkable formula of Kostant,Macdonald,Shapiro and Steinberg

The purpose of this note is to give a refinement of the product formula proved in [1] for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth Schubert variety in the flag variety of an algebraic group G over C. This yields a factorization of the number of elements in a Bruhat interval [e,w] in the Weyl group W of G provided the Schubert variety associated to w is smooth. This gives an elementary necessary condition for a Schubert variety in the flag variety to be smooth.

We show that the discretized configuration space of $k$ points in the $n$-simplex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension $n-k+1$. This space is homeomorphic to the order complex of the poset of ordered partial partitions of $\{1,...,n+1\}$ with exactly $k$ parts. We compute the exponential generating function for the Euler characteristic of this space in two different ways, thereby obtaining a topological proof of a combinatorial recurrence satisfied by the Stirling numbers of the second kind.
Composition of ordinary generating functions
A solution is proposed for the problem of composition of ordinary generating functions. A new class of functions that provides a composition of ordinary generating functions is introduced; main theorems are presented; compositae are written for polynomials, trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, exponential and log functions. It is shown that the composition holds true for many integer sequences.
On the metric dimension of corona product graphs

Given a set of vertices $S=\{v_1,v_2,...,v_k\}$ of a connected graph $G$, the metric representation of a vertex $v$ of $G$ with respect to $S$ is the vector $r(v|S)=(d(v,v_1),d(v,v_2),...,d(v,v_k))$, where $d(v,v_i)$, $i\in \{1,...,k\}$ denotes the distance between $v$ and $v_i$. $S$ is a resolving set for $G$ if for every pair of vertices $u,v$ of $G$, $r(u|S)\ne r(v|S)$. The metric dimension of $G$, $dim(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of any resolving set for $G$. Let $G$ and $H$ be two graphs of order $n_1$ and $n_2$, respectively. The corona product $G\odot H$ is defined as the graph obtained from $G$ and $H$ by taking one copy of $G$ and $n_1$ copies of $H$ and joining by an edge each vertex from the $i^{th}$-copy of $H$ with the $i^{th}$-vertex of $G$. For any integer $k\ge 2$, we define the graph $G\odot^k H$ recursively from $G\odot H$ as $G\odot^k H=(G\odot^{k-1} H)\odot H$. We give several results on the metric dimension of $G\odot^k H$. For instance, we show that given two connected graphs $G$ and $H$ of order $n_1\ge 2$ and $n_2\ge 2$, respectively, if the diameter of $H$ is at most two, then $dim(G\odot^k H)=n_1(n_2+1)^{k-1}dim(H)$. Moreover, if $n_2\ge 7$ and the diameter of $H$ is greater than five or $H$ is a cycle graph, then $dim(G\odot^k H)=n_1(n_2+1)^{k-1}dim(K_1\odot H).$
An 4n-point Interpolation Formula for Certain Polynomials
By using some techniques of the divided difference operators, we establish an 4n-point interpolation formula. Certain polynomials, such as Jackson's _8φ_7 terminating summation formula, are special cases of this formula. Based on Krattenthaler's identity, we also give Jackson's formula a determinantal interpretation.

Flips of diagonals in colored triangle-free triangulations of a convex polygon are interpreted as moves between two adjacent chambers in a certain graphic hyperplane arrangement. Properties of geodesics in the associated flip graph are deduced. In particular, it is shown that: (1) every diagonal is flipped exactly once in a geodesic between distinguished pairs of antipodes; (2) the number of geodesics between these antipodes is equal to twice the number of Young tableaux of a truncated shifted staircase shape.
Supplemental material to the article "Partitions of the triangles of the cross polytope into surfaces''
We present a constructive proof, that there exists a decomposition of the 2-skeleton of the k-dimensional cross polytope β^k into closed surfaces of genus \leq 1, each with a transitive automorphism group given by the vertex transitive Z_{2k}-action on β^k. Furthermore we show, that for each k \equiv 1,5(6) the 2-skeleton of the (k-1)-simplex is a union of highly symmetric tori and Möbius strips.

We present a constructive proof that there exists a decomposition of the 2-skeleton of the k-dimensional cross polytope $β^k$ into closed surfaces of genus $g \leq 1$, each with a transitive automorphism group given by the vertex transitive $\mathbb{Z}_{2k}$-action on $β^k$. Furthermore we show that for each $k \equiv 1,5(6)$ the 2-skeleton of the (k-1)-simplex is a union of highly symmetric tori and Möbius strips.

We show that the co-chordal cover number of a graph G gives an upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the associated edge ideal. Several known combinatorial upper bounds of regularity for edge ideals are then easy consequences of covering results from graph theory, and we derive new upper bounds by looking at additional covering results.
Quasi-randomness of graph balanced cut properties

Quasi-random graphs can be informally described as graphs whose edge distribution closely resembles that of a truly random graph of the same edge density. Recently, Shapira and Yuster proved the following result on quasi-randomness of graphs. Let $k \ge 2$ be a fixed integer, $α_1,...,α_k$ be positive reals satisfying $\sum_{i} α_i = 1$ and $(α_1,..., α_k) \neq (1/k,...,1/k)$, and $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. If for every partition of the vertices of $G$ into sets $V_1,..., V_k$ of size $α_1 n,..., α_k n$, the number of complete graphs on $k$ vertices which have exactly one vertex in each of these sets is similar to what we would expect in a random graph, then the graph is quasi-random. However, the method of quasi-random hypergraphs they used did not provide enough information to resolve the case $(1/k,..., 1/k)$ for graphs. In their work, Shapira and Yuster asked whether this case also forces the graph to be quasi-random. Janson also posed the same question in his study of quasi-randomness under the framework of graph limits. In this paper, we positively answer their question.

The tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by congruent triangles have been extensively studied, and the edge-to-edge tilings have been completely classified. However, not much is known about the tilings by other congruent polygons. In this paper, we classify the simplest case, which is the edge-to-edge tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by 12 congruent pentagons. We find one major class allowing two independent continuous parameters and four classes of isolated examples. The classification is done by first separately classifying the combinatorial, edge length, and angle aspects, and then combining the respective classifications together.

Vector-valued Jack polynomials associated to the symmetric group ${\mathfrak S}_N$ are polynomials with multiplicities in an irreducible module of ${\mathfrak S}_N$ and which are simultaneous eigenfunctions of the Cherednik-Dunkl operators with some additional properties concerning the leading monomial. These polynomials were introduced by Griffeth in the general setting of the complex reflections groups $G(r,p,N)$ and studied by one of the authors (C. Dunkl) in the specialization $r=p=1$ (i.e. for the symmetric group). By adapting a construction due to Lascoux, we describe an algorithm allowing us to compute explicitly the Jack polynomials following a Yang-Baxter graph. We recover some properties already studied by C. Dunkl and restate them in terms of graphs together with additional new results. In particular, we investigate normalization, symmetrization and antisymmetrization, polynomials with minimal degree, restriction etc. We give also a shifted version of the construction and we discuss vanishing properties of the associated polynomials.

We present a generalization of a version of the Kruskal-Katona theorem due to Lovasz. A shadow of a d-tuple (S_1,...,S_d) in binom{X}{r}^d consists of d-tuples (S_1',...,S_d') in binom{X}{r-1}^d obtained by removing one element from each of S_i. We show that if a family F in binom{X}{r}^d has size |F|=binom{x}{r}^d for a real number x>=r, then the shadow of F has size at least binom{x}{r-1}^d.
Graphons, cut norm and distance, couplings and rearrangements
We give a survey of basic results on the cut norm and cut metric for graphons (and sometimes more general kernels), with emphasis on the equivalence problem. The main results are not new, but we add various technical complements, and a new proof of the uniqueness theorem by Borgs, Chayes and Lovász. We allow graphons on general probability spaces whenever possible. We also give some new results for {0,1}-valued graphons and for pure graphons.
Radon partitions in convexity spaces
Tverberg's theorem asserts that every (k-1)(d+1)+1 points in R^d can be partitioned into k parts, so that the convex hulls of the parts have a common intersection. Calder and Eckhoff asked whether there is a purely combinatorial deduction of Tverberg's theorem from the special case k=2. We dash the hopes of a purely combinatorial deduction, but show that the case k=2 does imply that every set of O(k^2 log^2 k) points admits a Tverberg partition into k parts.

We define higher order infinitesimal noncommutative probability space and infinitesimal non-crossing cumulant functionals. In this framework, we generalize to higher order the notion of infinitesimal freeness, via a vanishing of mixed cumulants condition. We also introduce and study some non-crossing partitions related to this notion. Finally, as an application, we show how to compute the successive derivatives of the free convolution of two time-indexed families of distributions from their individual derivatives.
