Given non-negative weights w_S on the k-subsets S of a km-element set V, we consider the sum of the products w_{S_1} ... w_{S_m} for all partitions V = S_1 cup ... cup S_m into pairwise disjoint k-subsets S_i. When the weights w_S are positive and within a constant factor, fixed in advance, of each other, we present a simple polynomial time algorithm to approximate the sum within a polynomial in m factor. In the process, we obtain higher-dimensional versions of the van der Waerden and Bregman-Minc bounds for permanents. We also discuss applications to counting of perfect and nearly perfect matchings in hypergraphs.
Three-Colorings of Cubic Graphs and Tensor Operators
Penrose's work \cite{8} established a connection between the edge 3-colorings of cubic planar graphs and tensor algebras. We exploit this point of view in order to get algebraic representations of the category of cubic graphs with free ends.

We prove that if the Hausdorff dimension of a compact set $E \subset {\Bbb R}^2$ is greater than 7/4, then the set of {\ag three-point configurations determined by $E$ has positive three-dimensional measure}. We establish this by showing that {\ag a} natural measure on the set of {\ag such configurations} has {\ag Radon-Nikodym derivative} in $L^{\infty}$ if $\dH(E)> 7/4$, and the index 7/4 in this last result cannot, in general, be improved. This problem naturally leads to the study of a bilinear convolution operator, $$ B(f,g)(x)=\int \int f(x-u) g(x-v)\, dK(u,v),$$ where $K$ is surface measure on the set $ \{(u, v) \in\R^2 \times \R^2: |u|=|v|=|u-v|=1\}$, and we prove a scale of estimates that includes $B:L^2_{-1/2}({\Bbb R}^2) \times L^2({\Bbb R}^2) \to L^1({\Bbb R}^2)$ on positive functions.
As an application of our main result, it follows that {\ag for finite sets of cardinality $n$ and belonging to a natural class of discrete sets in the plane}, the maximum number of times a given three-point configuration arises is $O(n^{9/7+ε})$ (up to congruence), improving upon the known bound of $O(n^{4/3})$ in this context.
Enumeration of $\C{H}$-strata in quantum matrices with respect to dimension
We present a combinatorial method to determine the dimension of $\C{H}$-strata in the algebra of $m\times n$ quantum matrices $\Oq$ as follows. To a given $\C{H}$-stratum we associate a certain permutation via the notion of pipe-dreams. We show that the dimension of the $\C{H}$-stratum is precisely the number of odd cycles in this permutation. Using this result, we are able to give closed formulas for the trivariate generating function that counts the $d$-dimensional $\C{H}$-strata in $\Oq$. Finally, we extract the coefficients of this generating function in order to settle conjectures proposed by the first and third named authors \cite{bldim,bll} regarding the asymptotic proportion of $d$-dimensional $\C{H}$-strata in $\Oq$.

The n-th Delannoy number and the n-th Schröder number given by $D_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}{k}\binom{n+k}{k}$ and $S_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}{k}\binom{n+k}{k}/(k+1)$ respectively arise naturally from enumerative combinatorics. Let p be an odd prime. We mainly show that $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}D_k/k^2=2(-1/p)E_{p-3} (mod p)$$ and $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}S_k/m^k=(m^2-6m+1)/(2m)*(1-((m^2-6m+1)/p) (mod p),$$ where (-) is the Legendre symbol, E_0,E_1,E_2,... are Euler numbers and m is any integer not divisible by p. We also conjecture that $\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}D_k^2/k^2=-2q_p(2)^2 (mod p)$, where $q_p(2)=(2^{p-1}-1)/p$.
On Isosceles Triangles and Related Problems in a Convex Polygon
Given any convex $n$-gon, in this article, we: (i) prove that its vertices can form at most $n^2/2 + Θ(n\log n)$ isosceles trianges with two sides of unit length and show that this bound is optimal in the first order, (ii) conjecture that its vertices can form at most $3n^2/4 + o(n^2)$ isosceles triangles and prove this conjecture for a special group of convex $n$-gons, (iii) prove that its vertices can form at most $\lfloor n/k \rfloor$ regular $k$-gons for any integer $k\ge 4$ and that this bound is optimal, and (iv) provide a short proof that the sum of all the distances between its vertices is at least $(n-1)/2$ and at most $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor \lceil n/2 \rceil(1/2)$ as long as the convex $n$-gon has unit perimeter.
Labeled Ballot Paths and the Springer Numbers

The Springer numbers are defined in connection with the irreducible root systems of type $B_n$, which also arise as the generalized Euler and class numbers introduced by Shanks. Combinatorial interpretations of the Springer numbers have been found by Purtill in terms of Andre signed permutations, and by Arnol'd in terms of snakes of type $B_n$. We introduce the inversion code of a snake of type $B_n$ and establish a bijection between labeled ballot paths of length n and snakes of type $B_n$. Moreover, we obtain the bivariate generating function for the number B(n,k) of labeled ballot paths starting at (0,0) and ending at (n,k). Using our bijection, we find a statistic $α$ such that the number of snakes $π$ of type $B_n$ with $α(π)=k$ equals B(n,k). We also show that our bijection specializes to a bijection between labeled Dyck paths of length 2n and alternating permutations on [2n].

We show that the Poincare polynomial associated with the orbifold cell decomposition of the moduli space of smooth algebraic curves with distinct marked points satisfies a topological recursion formula of the Eynard-Orantin type. The recursion uniquely determines the Poincare polynomials from the initial data. Our key discovery is that the Poincare polynomial is the Laplace transform of the number of Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants.

We introduce a novel and general approach for digitalization of line segments in the plane that satisfies a set of axioms naturally arising from Euclidean axioms. In particular, we show how to derive such a system of digital segments from any total order on the integers. As a consequence, using a well-chosen total order, we manage to define a system of digital segments such that all digital segments are, in Hausdorff metric, optimally close to their corresponding Euclidean segments, thus giving an explicit construction that resolves the main question of Chun et al.
Subgroup S-commutativity degrees of finite groups

The so--called subgroup commutativity degree $sd(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the number of permuting subgroups $(H,K) \in \mathrm{L}(G) \times \mathrm{L}(G)$, where $\mathrm{L}(G)$ is the subgroup lattice of $G$, divided by $|\mathrm{L}(G)|^2$. It allows us to measure how $G$ is far from the celebrated classification of quasihamiltonian groups of K. Iwasawa. Here we generalize $sd(G)$, looking at suitable sublattices of $\mathrm{L}(G)$, and show some new lower bounds.

Given a morphism from an affine semigroup Q to an arbitrary commutative monoid, it is shown that every fiber possesses an affine stratification: a partition into a finite disjoint union of translates of normal affine semigroups. The proof rests on mesoprimary decomposition of monoid congruences [arXiv:1107.4699] and a novel list of equivalent conditions characterizing the existence of an affine stratification. The motivating consequence of the main result is a special case of a conjecture due to Guo and the author [arXiv:0908.3473, arXiv:1105.5420] on the existence of affine stratifications for (the set of winning positions of) any lattice game. The special case proved here assumes that the lattice game has finite misére quotient, in the sense of Plambeck and Siegel [arXiv:math/0501315, arXiv:math/0609825v5].

Results of R. Stanley and M. Masuda completely characterize the h-vectors of simplicial posets whose order complexes are spheres. In this paper we examine the corresponding question in the case where the order complex is a ball. Using the face rings of these posets, we develop a series of new conditions on their h-vectors. We also present new methods for constructing poset balls with specific h-vectors. These results allow us to give a complete characterization of the h-vectors of simplicial poset balls up through dimension six.

Let $Π$ be a polar space of rank $n$ and let ${\mathcal G}_{k}(Π)$, $k\in \{0,\dots,n-1\}$ be the polar Grassmannian formed by $k$-dimensional singular subspaces of $Π$. The corresponding Grassmann graph will be denoted by $Γ_{k}(Π)$. We consider the polar Grassmannian ${\mathcal G}_{n-1}(Π)$ formed by maximal singular subspaces of $Π$ and show that the image of every isometric embedding of the $n$-dimensional hypercube graph $H_{n}$ in $Γ_{n-1}(Π)$ is an apartment of ${\mathcal G}_{n-1}(Π)$. This follows from a more general result (Theorem 2) concerning isometric embeddings of $H_{m}$, $m\le n$ in $Γ_{n-1}(Π)$. As an application, we classify all isometric embeddings of $Γ_{n-1}(Π)$ in $Γ_{n'-1}(Π')$, where $Π'$ is a polar space of rank $n'\ge n$ (Theorem 3).

In this paper we shall survey the various methods of evaluating Hankel determinants and as an illustration we evaluate some Hankel determinants of a q-analogue of Catalan numbers. Here we consider $\frac{(aq;q)_{n}}{(abq^{2};q)_{n}}$ as a q-analogue of Catalan numbers $C_{n}=\frac1{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$, which is known as the moments of the little q-Jacobi polynomials. We also give several proofs of this q-analogue, in which we use lattice paths, the orthogonal polynomials, or the basic hypergeometric series. We also consider a q-analogue of Schröder Hankel determinants, and give a new proof of Moztkin Hankel determinants using an addition formula for ${}_2F_{1}$.
Laguerre and Meixner symmetric functions, and infinite-dimensional diffusion processes

The Laguerre symmetric functions introduced in the note are indexed by arbitrary partitions and depend on two continuous parameters. The top degree homogeneous component of every Laguerre symmetric function coincides with the Schur function with the same index. Thus, the Laguerre symmetric functions form a two-parameter family of inhomogeneous bases in the algebra of symmetric functions. These new symmetric functions are obtained from the N-variate symmetric polynomials of the same name by a procedure of analytic continuation. The Laguerre symmetric functions are eigenvectors of a second order differential operator, which depends on the same two parameters and serves as the infinitesimal generator of an infinite-dimensional diffusion process X(t). The process X(t) admits approximation by some jump processes related to one more new family of symmetric functions, the Meixner symmetric functions. In equilibrium, the process X(t) can be interpreted as a time-dependent point process on the punctured real line R\{0}, and the point configurations may be interpreted as doubly infinite collections of particles of two opposite charges with log-gas-type interaction. The dynamical correlation functions of the equilibrium process have determinantal form: they are given by minors of the so-called extended Whittaker kernel, introduced earlier in a paper by Borodin and the author.

We give an Eynard-Orantin type topological recursion formula for the canonical Euclidean volume of the combinatorial moduli space of pointed smooth algebraic curves. The recursion comes from the edge removal operation on the space of ribbon graphs. As an application we obtain a new proof of the Kontsevich constants for the ratio of the Euclidean and the symplectic volumes of the moduli space of curves.
Ranking and unranking trees with given degree sequences
In this paper, we provide algorithms to rank, unrank, and randomly generate certain degree-restricted classes of Cayley trees. Specifically, we consider classes of trees that have a given degree sequence or a given multiset of degrees. If the underlying set of trees have n vertices, then the largest ranks involved in each case are of order n! so that it takes O(nlog(n)) bits just to write down the ranks. Our ranking and unranking algorithms for these degree-restricted classes are as efficient as can be expected since we show that they require O(n^2log(n)) bit operations if the underlying trees have n vertices.
Ranking and unranking trees with a given number or a given set of leaves
In this paper, we provide algorithms to rank and unrank certain degree-restricted classes of Cayley trees (spanning trees of the n-vertex complete graph). Specifically, we consider classes of trees that have a given set of leaves or a fixed number k of leaves. For fixed k, the number of Cayley trees with n vertices and k leaves grows roughly as n! and hence the ranks have O(nlog_2(n)) bits. Our ranking and unranking algorithms require at most O(n^2) comparisons of numbers less than or equal to n plus O(n) operations of multiplication, division, addition, substraction and comparision on numbers of length O(nlog(n)).

A Spectral Approach to Consecutive Pattern-Avoiding Permutations

We consider the problem of enumerating permutations in the symmetric group on $n$ elements which avoid a given set of consecutive pattern $S$, and in particular computing asymptotics as $n$ tends to infinity. We develop a general method which solves this enumeration problem using the spectral theory of integral operators on $L^{2}([0,1]^{m})$, where the patterns in $S$ has length $m+1$. Kreĭn and Rutman's generalization of the Perron--Frobenius theory of non-negative matrices plays a central role. Our methods give detailed asymptotic expansions and allow for explicit computation of leading terms in many cases. As a corollary to our results, we settle a conjecture of Warlimont on asymptotics for the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern.
