Changing Bases with Pipe Dream Combinatorics
Lascoux and Schützenberger introduced Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials to study the cohomology and K-theory of the complete flag variety. We present explicit combinatorial rules for expressing Grothendieck polynomials in the basis of Schubert polynomials, and vice versa, using the bumpless pipe dreams (BPDs) of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. A key advantage of BPDs is that they are naturally back stable, which allows us to give a combinatorial formula for expanding back stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of back stable Schubert polynomials. We also provide pipe dream interpretations for the rules originally given by Lenart (Grothendieck to Schubert) and Lascoux (Schubert to Grothendieck), which were previously formulated in terms of binary triangular arrays. We give new proofs of these results, relying on Knutson's co-transition recurrences. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for expanding Grothendieck polynomials into Schubert polynomials using chains in Bruhat order. The key connection between the pipe dream and BPD change of basis formulas is the canonical bijection of Gao and Huang. We show that co-permutations are preserved by this map.

New Polynomial Identities and Some Consequences
Using an elementary approach involving the Euler Beta function and the binomial theorem, we derive two polynomial identities; one of which is a generalization of a known polynomial identity. Two well-known combinatorial identities, namely Frisch's identity and Klamkin's identity, appear as immediate consequences of the polynomial identities. We subsequently establish several combinatorial identities, including a generalization of each of Frisch's identity and Klamkin's identity. Finally, we develop a scheme for deriving combinatorial identities associated with polynomial identities of a certain type.

The combinatorics of identities involving overpartitions with distinct parts
Recently, Andrews and EI Bachraoui discovered several companions for some famous $q$-series formulas, and derived some new identities involving partitions and overpartitions with distinct parts. In this paper, we shall refine their results by the number of parts of partitions and furthermore, we will also provide the combinatorial proofs for those partition identities.
#P is Sandwiched by One and Two #2DNF Calls: Is Subtraction Stronger Than We Thought?
The canonical class in the realm of counting complexity is #P. It is well known that the problem of counting the models of a propositional formula in disjunctive normal form (#DNF) is complete for #P under Turing reductions. On the other hand, #DNF $\in$ spanL and spanL $\not\subseteq$ #P unless NL = NP. Hence, the class of functions logspace-reducible to #DNF is a strict subset of #P under plausible complexity-theoretic assumptions. By contrast, we show that two calls to a (restricted) #2DNF oracle suffice to capture gapP, namely, that the logspace many-one closure of the subtraction between the results of two #2DNF calls is gapP. Because #P $\not\subseteq$ gapP, #P is strictly contained between one and two #2DNF oracle calls. Surprisingly, the propositional formulas needed in both calls are linear-time computable, and the reduction preserves interesting structural as well as symmetry properties, leading to algorithmic applications. We show that a single subtraction suffices to compensate for the absence of negation while still capturing gapP, i.e., our results carry over to the monotone fragments of #2SAT and #2DNF. Since our reduction is linear-time, it preserves sparsity and, as a consequence we obtain a sparsification lemma for both #2SAT and #2DNF. This has only been known for kSAT with k $\geq$ 3 and respective counting versions. We further show that both #2DNF calls can be combined into a single call if we allow a little postprocessing (computable by AC0- or TC0-circuits). Consequently, we derive refined versions of Toda's Theorem: PH $\subseteq$ [#MON2SAT]$^{log}_{TC0}$ = [#MON2DNF]$^{log}_{TC0}$ and PH $\subseteq$ [#IMPL2SAT]$^{log}_{AC0}$. Our route to these results is via structure-aware reductions that preserve parameters like treewidth up to an additive overhead. The absence of multiplicative overhead indeed yields parameterized SETH-tight lower bounds.

Ramsey goodness of stars and fans for the Hajós graph
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 27:3, Graph Theory (September 20, 2025) dmtcs:15817 • View PublicationBIB
Given two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, the Ramsey number $R(G_1,G_2)$ denotes the smallest integer $N$ such that any red-blue coloring of the edges of $K_N$ contains either a red $G_1$ or a blue $G_2$. Let $G_1$ be a graph with chromatic number $χ$ and chromatic surplus $s$, and let $G_2$ be a connected graph with $n$ vertices. The graph $G_2$ is said to be Ramsey-good for the graph $G_1$ (or simply $G_1$-good) if, for $n \ge s$, \[R(G_1,G_2)=(χ-1)(n-1)+s.\] The $G_1$-good property has been extensively studied for star-like graphs when $G_1$ is a graph with $χ(G_1)\ge 3$, as seen in works by Burr-Faudree-Rousseau-Schelp (J. Graph Theory, 1983), Li-Rousseau (J. Graph Theory, 1996), Lin-Li-Dong (European J. Combin., 2010), Fox-He-Wigderson (Adv. Combin., 2023), and Liu-Li (J. Graph Theory, 2025), among others. However, all prior results require $G_1$ to have chromatic surplus $1$. In this paper, we extend this investigation to graphs with chromatic surplus 2 by considering the Hajós graph $H_a$. For a star $K_{1,n}$, we prove that $K_{1,n}$ is $H_a$-good if and only if $n$ is even. For a fan $F_n$ with $n\ge 111$, we prove that $F_n$ is $H_a$-good.

Morse theory and moduli spaces of self-avoiding polygonal linkages
We show that a smooth $d$-manifold $M$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb R^d$ if it admits a Lyapunov-Reeb function, i.e., a smooth map $f:M\to\mathbb R$ that is proper, lower-bounded, and has a unique critical point. By constructing such functions, we prove that the moduli spaces of self-avoiding polygonal linkages and configurations are diffeomorphic to Euclidean spaces. This resolves the Refined Carpenter's Rule Problem and confirms a conjecture proposed by González and Sedano-Mendoza. Furthermore, we describe foliation structures of these moduli spaces via level sets of Lyapunov-Reeb functions and develop algorithms for related problems.

Proof of a conjecture by Starr and log-concavity for random commuting permutations
We prove a conjecture by Shannon Starr regarding the asymptotics for the number of tuples of commuting permutations with given number of joint orbits. These numbers generalize unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind which count how many single permutations have a given number of cycles. In the case of pairs of permutations, these numbers are related to D'Arcais polynomials and the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula. As a consequence of the above asymptotics, we confirm a log-concavity conjecture in the regime of typical values for the number of joint orbits. As a result of possible indepentent interest in applied mathematics and mathematical physics, we also provide detailed asymptotics, using Mellin transform techniques, for certain multiple series or multivariate Ramanujan sums which are related to ordinary generating functions of Dirichlet convolutions of power laws. Besides these multiple sums asymptotics, our proofs use bivariate saddle point analysis related to the Meinardus theorem in the delicate case of multiple poles for the associated Dirichlet series.
Bivariate asymptotics via random walks: application to large genus maps
We obtain bivariate asymptotics for the number of (unicellular) combinatorial maps (a model of discrete surfaces) as both the size and the genus grow. This work is related to two research topics that have been very active recently: multivariate asymptotics and large genus geometry. Our method consists in studying a linear recurrence for these numbers, and in fact it can be applied to many other linear recurrences. We discuss briefly the generality of our method and future research directions.

A characterization of all graphs cospectral to the double star $P_2(1,n)$
We examine the adjacency spectrum of trees with diameter three, also referred to as double stars. Using $P_2(a,b)$ to denote a double star with $ a$ and $b$ leaves at its respective endpoints, we discuss graphs which are cospectral to double stars for various parameters $a$ and $b$. In particular, we give constructions for graphs cospectral to $P_2(1,2k)$ for integers $k$. Lastly, we show that the double star $P_2(1,n)$ is determined by its spectrum when $n$ is odd. That is, if a graph $G$ cospectral to $P_2(1,n)$ for odd $n$, then $G$ is isomorphic to $P_2(1,n)$.

RSK correspondence for King tableaux with Berele insertion
We establish a bijective RSK correspondence of type C for King tableaux with Berele insertion as a reformulation of Sundaram's correspondence (1986). For its $Q$-symbol, we make use of semistandard oscillating tableaux (SSOT), a new object which Lee (2025) introduced. Further, we show hidden duality of Cauchy identity through RSK correspondences of type A and C. Finally, we prove that the generating function of SSOT is symmetric by constructing a new sort of Bender-Knuth involution.

Finer control on relative sizes of iterated sumsets
Inspired by recent questions of Nathanson, we show that for any infinite abelian group $G$ and any integers $m_1, \ldots, m_H$, there exist finite subsets $A,B \subseteq G$ such that $|hA|-|hB|=m_h$ for each $1 \leq h \leq H$. We also raise, and begin to address, questions about the smallest possible cardinalities and diameters of such sets $A,B$.

The overflow in the Katona Theorem
Let $n>2r>0$ be integers. We consider families $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of an $n$-element set, in which the union of any two members has size at most $2r$. One of our results states that for $n\geq 6r$ the number of members of size exceeding $r$ in $\mathcal{F}$ is at most $\binom{n-2}{r-1}$. Another result shows that for $n>3.5r$ the number of sets of size at least $r$ is at most $\binom{n}{r}$. Both bounds are best possible and the latter sharpens the classical Katona Theorem. Similar results are proved for the odd case of the Katona Theorem as well.

Permutations with a fixed number of occurrences of a monotone pattern
We bound the number of permutations with a fixed number $r$ of $321 \ominus p_0$ patterns by a constant times the number of permutations which avoid $321 \ominus p_0$. We use this new upper bound to show that the ordinary generating function for permutations with $r$ copies of $k(k-1)...1$ is not rational for odd $k \geq 3$ and not algebraic for even $k \geq 3$.

Finite $s$-geodesic transitive graphs under certain girths
For an integer $s\geq1$ and a graph $Γ$, a path $(u_0, u_1, \ldots, u_{s})$ of vertices of $Γ$ is called an {\em $s$-geodesic} if it is a shortest path from $u_0$ to $u_{s}$. We say that $Γ$ is {\em $s$-geodesic transitive} if, for each $i\leq s$, $Γ$ has at least one $i$-geodesic, and its automorphism group is transitive on the set of $i$-geodesics. In 2021, Jin and Praeger [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 178 (2021) 105349] have studied $3$-geodesic transitive graphs of girth $5$ or $6$, and they also proposed to the problem that to classify $s$-geodesic transitive graphs of girth $2s-1$ or $2s-2$ for $s=4, 5, 6, 7, 8$. The case of $s = 4$ was investigated in [J. Algebra Combin. 60 (2024) 949--963]. In this paper, we study such graphs with $s\geq5$. More precisely, it is shown that a connected $(G,s)$-geodesic transitive graph $Γ$ with a nontrivial intransitive normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ which has at least $3$ orbits, where $G$ is an automorphism group of $Γ$ and $s\geq 5$, either $Γ$ is the Foster graph and $Γ_N$ is the Tutte's $8$-cage, or $Γ$ and $Γ_N$ have the same girth and $Γ_N$ is $(G/N,s)$-geodesic transitive. Moreover, it is proved that if $G$ acts quasiprimitively on its vertex set, then $G$ is an almost simple group, and if $G$ acts biquasiprimitively, the stabilizer of biparts of $Γ$ in $G$ is an almost simple quasiprimitive group on each of biparts. In addition, $G$ cannot be primitive or biprimitive.

Cubic graphs with no eigenvalues in the interval (-2,0)
We give a complete characterisation of the cubic graphs with no eigenvalues in the interval $(-2,0)$. There is one thin infinite family consisting of a single graph on $6n$ vertices for each $n \geqslant 2$, and five ``sporadic'' graphs, namely the $3$-prism $K_3 \mathbin{\square} K_2$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,3}$, the Petersen graph, the dodecahedron and Tutte's $8$-cage. The proof starts by observing that if a cubic graph has no eigenvalues in $(-2,0)$ then its local structure around a girth-cycle is very constrained. Then a separate case analysis for each possible girth shows that these constraints can be satisfied only by the known examples. All but one of these case analyses can be completed by hand, but for girth five there are sufficiently many cases that it is necessary to use a computer for the analysis.
Generalization of Ramanujan's formula for sums of half-integer powers of consecutive integers via formal Bernoulli series
Published in The Ramanujan Journal 68 (2025), 106 • View PublicationBIB
Faulhaber's formula expresses the sum of the first $n$ positive integers, each raised to an integer power $p\geq 0$, as a polynomial in $n$ of degree $p+1$. Ramanujan expressed this sum for $p\in\{\frac12,\frac32,\frac52,\frac72\}$ as the sum of a polynomial in $\sqrt{n}$ and a certain infinite series. In the present work, we explore the connection to Bernoulli polynomials, and by generalizing those to formal series, we extend the Ramanujan result to all positive half-integers $p$.
Path operators and $(q,t)$-tau functions
We construct a new class of operators that act on symmetric functions with two deformation parameters $q$ and $t$. Our combinatorial construction associates each operator with a specific lattice path, whose steps alternate between moving up and down. We demonstrate that positive linear combinations of these operators are the images of Negut elements via a representation of the shuffle algebra acting on the space of symmetric functions. Additionally, we provide a monomial, elementary, and Schur symmetric function expansion for the symmetric function obtained through repeated applications of the path operators on $1$. We apply path operators to investigate a $(q,t)$-deformation of the classical hypergeometric tau functions, which generalizes several important series already present in enumerative geometry, gauge theory, and integrability. We prove that this function is uniquely characterized by a family of partial differential equations derived from a positive linear combination of path operators. We also use our operators to offer a new, independent proof of the key result in establishing the extended delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson.

Enumerating planar stuffed maps as hypertrees of mobiles
A planar stuffed map is an embedding of a graph into the 2-sphere $S^{2}$, considered up to orientation-preserving homeomorphisms, such that the complement of the graph is a collection of disjoint topologically connected components that are each homeomorphic to $S^{2}$ with multiple boundaries. This is a generalization of planar maps whose complement of the graph is a collection of disjoint topologically connected components that are each homeomorphic to a disc. The main goal of this work is to construct a bijection between bipartite planar stuffed maps and collections of integer-labelled trees connected by hyperedges such that they form a hypertree, called hypermobiles. This bijection directly generalizes the Bouttier-Di Franceso-Guitter bijection between bipartite planar maps and mobiles. Additionally, we show that the generating functions of these trees of mobiles satisfy both an algebraic equation, generalizing the case of ordinary planar maps, and a new functional equation. As an example, we explicitly enumerate a class of stuffed quadrangulations.

Ramanujan's partition generating functions modulo $\ell$
For the partition function $p(n)$, Ramanujan proved the striking identities $$ P_5(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(5n+4)q^n =5\prod_{n\geq 1} \frac{\left(q^5;q^5\right)_{\infty}^5}{(q;q)_{\infty}^6}, $$ $$ P_7(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(7n+5)q^n =7\prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^3}{(q;q)_{\infty}^4}+49q \prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^7}{(q;q)_{\infty}^8}, $$ where $(q;q)_{\infty}:=\prod_{n\geq 1}(1-q^n).$ As these identities imply his celebrated congruences modulo 5 and 7, it is natural to seek, for primes $\ell \geq 5,$ closed form expressions of the power series $$ P_{\ell}(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(\ell n-δ_{\ell})q^n\pmod{\ell}, $$ where $δ_{\ell}:=\frac{\ell^2-1}{24}.$ In this paper, we prove that $$ P_{\ell}(q)\equiv c_{\ell} \frac{T_{\ell}(q)}{ (q^\ell; q^\ell )_\infty} \pmod{\ell}, $$ where $c_{\ell}\in \mathbb{Z}$ is explicit and $T_{\ell}(q)$ is the generating function for the Hecke traces of $\ell$-ramified values of special Dirichlet series for weight $\ell-1$ cusp forms on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a new proof of Ramanujan's congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11, as there are no nontrivial cusp forms of weight 4, 6, and 10.

A construction that preserves the configuration of a matroid, with applications to lattice path matroids
The configuration of a matroid $M$ is the abstract lattice of cyclic flats (flats that are unions of circuits) where we record the size and rank of each cyclic flat, but not the set. One can compute the Tutte polynomial of $M$, and stronger invariants (notably, the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant), from the configuration. Given a matroid $M$ in which certain pairs of cyclic flats are non-modular, we show how to produce a matroid that is not isomorphic to $M$ but has the same configuration as $M$. We show that this construction applies to a lattice path matroid if and only if it is not a fundamental transversal matroid, and we enumerate the connected lattice path matroids on $[n]$ that are fundamental; these results imply that, asymptotically, almost no lattice path matroids are Tutte unique. We give a sufficient condition for a matroid to be determined, up to isomorphism, by its configuration. We treat constructions that yield matroids with different configurations where each matroid is determined by its configuration and all have the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. We also show that for any lattice $L$ other than a chain, there are non-isomorphic transversal matroids that have the same configuration and where the lattices of cyclic flats are isomorphic to $L$.
