Demazure product and hopping in type D
The Demazure product, also called the 0-Hecke product, is an associative operation on Coxeter groups with interesting properties and applications. In (Li et al 2024) it was shown that the Demazure product of two permutations can be described purely combinatorially: using only their one-line notation and not relying on reduced words. In this paper, we extend this to type D Coxeter groups.

On the thresholds of degenerate hypergraphs
An $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is $(d,α)$-degenerate if $m_1(G)\le{d}$ and there exists a constant $\varepsilon >0$ such that for every subset $U\subseteq{V(G)}$ with size $2\le|U|\le{\varepsilon n}$, we have $e\left(G[U]\right)\le{d\left(|U|-1\right)-α}$. These hypergraphs include many natural graph classes, such as the degenerate hypergraphs, the planar graphs, and the power of cycles. In this paper, we consider the threshold of the emergence of a $(d,α)$-degenerate hypergraph with bounded maximum degree in the Erdős-Rényi model. We show that its threshold is at most $n^{-1/d}$, improving previous results of Riordan and Kelly-Müyesser-Pokrovskiy.

Generalized snake posets, order polytopes, and lattice-point enumeration
Published • View PublicationBIB
Building from the work of von Bell et al.~(2022), we study the Ehrhart theory of order polytopes arising from a special class of distributive lattices, known as generalized snake posets. We present arithmetic properties satisfied by the Ehrhart polynomials of order polytopes of generalized snake posets along with a computation of their Gorenstein index. Then we give a combinatorial description of the chain polynomial of generalized snake posets as a direction to obtain the $h^*$-polynomial of their associated order polytopes. Additionally, we present explicit formulae for the $h^*$-polynomial of the order polytopes of the two extremal examples of generalized snake posets, namely the ladder and regular snake poset. We then provide a recursive formula for the $h^*$-polynomial of any generalized snake posets and show that the $h^*$-vectors are entry-wise bounded by the $h^*$-vectors of the two extremal cases.

Near rainbow Hamilton cycles in dense graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Finding near-rainbow Hamilton cycles in properly edge-coloured graphs was first studied by Andersen, who proved in 1989 that every proper edge colouring of the complete graph on $n$ vertices contains a Hamilton cycle with at least $n-\sqrt{2n}$ distinct colours. This result was improved to $n-O(\log^2 n)$ by Balogh and Molla in 2019. In this paper, we consider Anderson's problem for general graphs with a given minimum degree. We prove every globally $n/8$-bounded (i.e. every colour is assigned to at most $n/8$ edges) properly edge-coloured graph $G$ with $δ(G) \geq (1/2+\varepsilon)n$ contains a Hamilton cycle with $n-o(n)$ distinct colours. Moreover, we show that the constant $1/8$ is best possible.

Spanning trees and continued fractions
We prove the exponential growth of the cardinality of the set of numbers of spanning trees in simple (and planar) graphs on $n$ vertices, answering a question of Sedláček from 1969. The proof uses a connection with continued fractions, ``thin orbits,'' and Zaremba's conjecture.
Some asymptotic results on $p$-lengths of factorizations for numerical semigroups and arithmetical congruence monoids
A factorization of an element $x$ in a monoid $(M, \cdot)$ is an expression of the form $x = u_1^{z_1} \cdots u_k^{z_k}$ for irreducible elements $u_1, \ldots, u_k \in M$, and the length of such a factorization is $z_1 + \cdots + z_k$. We introduce the notion of $p$-length, a generalized notion of factorization length obtained from the $\ell_p$-norm of the sequence $(z_1, \ldots, z_k)$, and present asymptotic results on extremal $p$-lengths of factorizations for large elements of numerical semigroups (additive submonoids of $\mathbb Z_{\ge 0}$) and arithmetical congruence monoids (certain multiplicative submonoids of $\mathbb Z_{\ge 1}$). Our results, inspired by analogous results for classical factorization length, demonstrate the types of combinatorial statements one may hope to obtain for sufficiently nice monoids, as well as the subtlety such asymptotic questions can have for general monoids.

On the first hitting time of a high-dimensional orthant
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a collection of independent standard Brownian particles (or random walks), starting from a configuration where at least one particle is positive, and study the first time they all become negative. This is clearly equivalent to studying the first hitting time from the negative orthant or the first exit time from the complement of the negative orthant. While it turns out to be possible to compute the distribution of these hitting times for one and two particles, the distribution (and even its tail asymptotics) is not known in closed form for three or more particles. In this paper we study the tail asymptotics of the distribution as the number of particles tends to infinity. Our main techniques come from spectral geometry: we prove new asymptotic estimates for the principal eigenvalue of the complement of a high-dimensional orthant, which we believe are of independent interest.

C sequential optimization numbers
This work establishes a definition that is more basic than the previous ones, for the Stirling numbers of first kind, which is a sufficient but not necessary condition for the previous definition. Based on this definition and a combinatorial problem, we discover C sequential optimization numbers, where C is a k+1-tuple vector. For C= (0,1), we prove that C sequential optimization numbers are the unsigned Stirling numbers of first kind. We can deduce the properties of C sequential optimization numbers by following the properties of the Stirling numbers of first kind and we give specific examples such as the recurrence formula and an instance of C sequential optimization numbers. We also give specific new properties such as an explicit upper bound of them. We prove the probability that the unsigned Stirling numbers of first kind are concentrated in O(logn) is nearly 100%.
Excess Coverage Arrays and Levenshtein's Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A sequence covering array, denoted \textsf{SCA}$(N;t,v)$, is a set of $N$ permutations of $\{0, \dots, v-1 \}$ such that each sequence of $t$ distinct elements of $\{0, \dots, v-1\}$ reads left to right in at least one permutation. The minimum number of permutations such a sequence covering array can have is $t!$ and Levenshtein conjectured that if a sequence covering array with $t!$ permutations exists, then $v \in \{t,t+1\}$. In this paper, we prove that if an \textsf{SCA}$(7!;7,v)$ exists, then $v \leq 9$. We do this by analysing connections between sequence covering arrays and a special kind of covering array called an excess coverage array. A strength 2 excess coverage array, denoted \textsf{CA}$_{X}(N;2,k,v)$, is an $N \times k$ array with entries from $\{0, \dots, v - 1\}$ such that every ordered pair of distinct symbols appear at least once in each pair of columns and all other pairs appear at least twice. We demonstrate computationally that there is a unique \textsf{CA}$_{X}(42;2,5,6)$, and we prove that this array alone does not satisfy necessary conditions we establish for the existence of an \textsf{SCA}$(7!;7,10)$. Furthermore, we find the maximum possible number of columns for strength 2 excess coverage arrays with symbol sets of sizes between 2 and 6, and more broadly investigate binary excess coverage arrays.

S-invariant and S-multinvariant functions and some symmetry groups of algebraic sieves
In this article we introduced algebraic sieves, i.e. selection procedures on a given finite set to extract a particular subset. Such procedures are performed by finite groups acting on the set. They are called sieves because there are certain sets of numbers which, with appropriate groups, can select, for example, a set of primes, think of the famous Eratosthenes sieve. In this article we have given a general definition of algebraic sieves. And we also introduced the notion of invariant and multi-invariant functions, certain permutations on the sieve set which, in the invariant case, commute with the action of a given sieve-selecting group and the automorphism of that group, and multi-invariants which commute with all groups and their respective automorphisms. By means of such functions we have given symmetries on such sieves. In particular, we studied certain groups of symmetries of invariant functions. Then, using such notions, we studied a particular example, the Goldbach sieve, where the selector groups are dihedral groups and the selected set consists of the primes and, in some cases, the numbers $1$ and $N-1=p$, with $N$ being even and p prime, which satisfies the Goldbach conjecture for $N$. We have shown that one of these symmetry groups is isomorphic to a subgroup or affinity group of the ring of integers modulo N with N an integer even $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$.

On Bollobás-type theorems of $d$-tuples
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1965, Bollobás proved that for a Bollobás set-pair system $\{(A_i,B_i)\mid i\in[m]\}$, the maximum value of $\sum_{i=1}^m\binom{|A_i|+|B_i|}{A_i}^{-1}$ is $1$. Hegedüs and Frankl recently extended the concept of Bollobás systems to $d$-tuples, conjecturing that for a Bollobás system of $d$-tuples, $\{(A_i^{(1)},\ldots,A_i^{(d)})\mid i\in[m]\}$, the maximum value of $\sum_{i=1}^m\binom{|A_i^{(1)}|+\cdots+|A_i^{(d)}|}{|A_i^{(1)}|,\ldots,|A_i^{(d)}|}^{-1}$ is also $1$. This paper refutes this conjecture and establishes an upper bound for the sum. In the case $d=3$, the derived upper bound is asymptotically tight. Furthermore, we sharpen an inequality for skew Bollobás systems of $d$-tuples in Hegedüs and Frankl's paper. Finally, we determine the maximum size of a uniform skew Bollobás system of $d$-tuples on both sets and spaces.
Irreducible components of two-column $Δ$-Springer fibers
The $Δ$-Springer fibers $Y_{n,λ,s}$, introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the second author, generalize Springer fibers for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and give a geometric interpretation of the of the Delta Conjecture from algebraic combinatorics (at $t=0$). We prove that all irreducible components of the $Δ$-Springer fiber $Y_{n,n-1}=Y_{n,(1^{n-1}),n-1}$ are smooth. In fact, we prove that any intersection of irreducible components of $Y_{n,n-1}$ is a smooth Hessenberg variety which has the structure of an iterated Grassmannian fiber bundle. We then give a presentation of the singular cohomology ring of each irreducible component of $Y_{n,n-1}$ and a combinatorial formula for the Poincaré polynomial of an arbitrary union of intersections of irreducible components in terms of arm and leg statistics on Dyck paths.
On decomposition thresholds for odd-length cycles and other tripartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An (edge) decomposition of a graph $G$ is a set of subgraphs of $G$ whose edge sets partition the edge set of $G$. Here we show, for each odd $\ell \geq 5$, that any graph $G$ of sufficiently large order $n$ with minimum degree at least $(\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2\ell-4}+o(1))n$ has a decomposition into $\ell$-cycles if and only if $\ell$ divides $|E(G)|$ and each vertex of $G$ has even degree. This threshold cannot be improved beyond $\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2\ell-2}$. It was previously shown that the thresholds approach $\frac{1}{2}$ as $\ell$ becomes large, but our thresholds do so significantly more rapidly. Our methods can be applied to tripartite graphs more generally and we also obtain some bounds for decomposition thresholds of other tripartite graphs.

Measure doubling in unimodular locally compact groups and quotients
We consider a (possibly discrete) unimodular locally compact group $G$ with Haar measure $μ_G$, and a compact $A\subseteq G$ of positive measure with $μ_G(A^2)\leq Kμ_G(A)$. Let $H$ be a closed normal subgroup of G and $π: G \rightarrow G/H$ be the quotient map. With the further assumption that $A= A^{-1}$, we show $$μ_{G/H}(πA ^2) \leq K^2 μ_{G/H}(πA).$$ We also demonstrate that $K^2$ cannot be replaced by $(1-ε)K^2$ for any $ε>0$. In the general case (without $A=A^{-1}$), we show $μ_{G/H}(πA ^2) \leq K^3 μ_{G/H}(πA)$, improving an earlier result by An, Jing, Zhang, and the third author. Moreover, we are able to extract a compact set $B\subseteq A$ with $μ_G(B)> μ_G(A)/2$ such that $ μ_{G/H}(πB^2) < 2K μ_{G/H}(πB)$.

Special orientable sequences
Analogously to de Bruijn sequences, Orientable sequences have application in automatic position-location applications and, until recently, studies of these sequences focused on the binary case. In recent work by Alhakim et al., recursive methods of construction were described for orientable sequences over arbitrary finite alphabets, requiring 'starter sequences' with special properties. Some of these methods required as input special orientable sequences, i.e. orientable sequences which were simultaneously negative orientable. We exhibit methods for constructing special orientable sequences with properties appropriate for use in two of the recursive methods of Alhakim et al. As a result we are able to show how to construct special orientable sequences for arbitrary sizes of alphabet (larger than a small lower bound) and for all window sizes. These sequences have periods asymptotic to the optimal as the alphabet size increases.

BiSC: An algorithm for discovering generalized permutation patterns
Theorems relating permutations with objects in other fields of mathematics are often stated in terms of avoided patterns. Examples include various classes of Schubert varieties from algebraic geometry (Billey and Abe 2013), commuting functions in analysis (Baxter 1964), beta-shifts in dynamical systems (Elizalde 2011) and homology of representations (Sundaram 1994). We present a new algorithm, BiSC, that, given any set of permutations, outputs a conjecture for describing the set in terms of avoided patterns. The algorithm automatically conjectures the statements of known theorems such as the descriptions of smooth (Lakshmibai and Sandhya 1990) and forest-like permutations (Bousquet-M{é}lou and Butler 2007), Baxter permutations (Chung et al. 1978), stack-sortable (Knuth 1975) and West-2-stack-sortable permutations (West 1990). The algorithm has also been used to discover new theorems and conjectures related to the dihedral and alternating subgroups of the symmetric group, Young tableaux, Wilf-equivalences, and sorting devices.

Cubic bricks that every b-invariant edge is forcing
A connected graph G is matching covered if every edge lies in some perfect matching of G. Lovasz proved that every matching covered graph G can be uniquely decomposed into a list of bricks (nonbipartite) and braces (bipartite) up to multiple edges. Denote by b(G) the number of bricks of G. An edge e of G is removable if G-e is also matching covered, and solitary (or forcing) if after the removal of the two end vertices of e, the left graph has a unique perfect matching. Furthermore, a removable edge e of a brick G is b-invariant if b(G-e) = 1. Lucchesi and Murty proposed a problem of characterizing bricks, distinct from K4, the prism and the Petersen graph, in which every b-invariant edge is forcing. We answer the problem for cubic bricks by showing that there are exactly ten cubic bricks, including K4, the prism and the Petersen graph, every b-invariant edge of which is forcing.

On Hamilton paths in vertex-transitive graphs of order $10p$
Published • View PublicationBIB
It was shown by Kutnar, Maru\v si\v c and Zhang in 2012 that every connected vertex-transitive graph of order $10p$, where $p$ is a prime and $p\ne 7$, contains a Hamilton path, except for graphs $X$ arising from the action of PSL$(2, s^m)$ on cosets of $\mathbb{Z}_s^m\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_{\frac{s^m-1}{10}}$, where $s$ is a prime. In this paper, Hamilton cycles of these exceptions $X$ will be found.

On combinatorics of plus-one generated line arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we focus on combinatorial aspects of plus-one generated line arrangements. We provide combinatorial constraints on such arrangements and we construct a polynomial that decodes the plus-one generated property. We present new examples of plus-one generated arrangements constructed by using classical Klein and Wiman reflection arrangements, and we detect, among all known sporadic simplicial arrangements up to $27$ lines, exactly $9$ arrangements that are minimal plus-one generated.

Turán numbers of cycles plus a general graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a family of graphs $\cal F$, a graph $G$ is $\cal F$-free if it does not contain a member of $\cal F$ as a subgraph. The Turán number $\textrm{ex}(n,{\cal F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which is $\cal F$-free. Let ${\cal C}_{\geq k}$ be the set of cycles with length at least $k$. In this paper, we investigate the Turán number of $\{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, F\}$ for a general graph $F$. To be precise, we determine $\textrm{ex}(n, \{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, F\})$ apart from a constant additive term, where $F$ either is a 2-connected nonbipartite graph or is a 2-connected bipartite graph under some conditions. This is an extension of a previous result on the Turán number of $\{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, K_r\}$ by the first author, Ning, and the third author.
