Combinatorial frameworks for cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a general approach to finding combinatorial models for cluster algebras. The approach is to construct a labeled graph called a framework. When a framework is constructed with certain properties, the result is a model incorporating information about exchange matrices, principal coefficients, g-vectors, and g-vector fans. The idea behind frameworks arises from Cambrian combinatorics and sortable elements, and in this paper, we use sortable elements to construct a framework for any cluster algebra with an acyclic initial exchange matrix. This Cambrian framework yields a model of the entire exchange graph when the cluster algebra is of finite type. Outside of finite type, the Cambrian framework models only part of the exchange graph. In a forthcoming paper, we extend the Cambrian construction to produce a complete framework for a cluster algebra whose associated Cartan matrix is of affine type.

Submatrices of character tables and basic sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this investigation of character tables of finite groups we study basic sets and associated representation theoretic data for complementary sets of conjugacy classes. For the symmetric groups we find unexpected properties of characters on restricted sets of conjugacy classes, like beautiful combinatorial determinant formulae for submatrices of the character table and Cartan matrices with respect to basic sets; we observe that similar phenomena occur for the transition matrices between power sum symmetric functions to bounded partitions and the $k$-Schur functions introduced by Lapointe and Morse. Arithmetic properties of the numbers occurring in this context are studied via generating functions.

Quivers of monoids with basic algebras
Published in Compositio Math. 148 (2012) 1516-1560 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the quiver of any monoid that has a basic algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. More generally, we reduce the computation of the quiver over a splitting field of a class of monoids that we term rectangular monoids (in the semigroup theory literature the class is known as $\mathbf{DO}$) to representation theoretic computations for group algebras of maximal subgroups. Hence in good characteristic for the maximal subgroups, this gives an essentially complete computation. Since groups are examples of rectangular monoids, we cannot hope to do better than this. For the subclass of $\mathscr R$-trivial monoids, we also provide a semigroup theoretic description of the projective indecomposables and compute the Cartan matrix.

Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for reflection groups
Published in Advances in Math. vol 284, 22 (2015), 54-111 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we explicitly compute all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for semisimple or Kac-Moody groups G, that is, the structure coefficients of the cohomology algebra H^*(G/P), where P is a parabolic subgroup of G. These coefficients are of importance in enumerative geometry, algebraic combinatorics and representation theory. Our formula for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients is given in terms of the Cartan matrix and the Weyl group of G. However, if some off-diagonal entries of the Cartan matrix are 0 or -1, the formula may contain negative summands. On the other hand, if the Cartan matrix satisfies $a_{ij}a_{ji}\ge 4$ for all $i,j$, then each summand in our formula is nonnegative that implies nonnegativity of all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We extend this and other results to the structure coefficients of the T-equivariant cohomology of flag varieties G/P and Bott-Samelson varieties Gamma_\ii(G).
On the representation theory of finite J-trivial monoids
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, B64d (2011), 44 pp • Search Publication
In 1979, Norton showed that the representation theory of the 0-Hecke algebra admits a rich combinatorial description. Her constructions rely heavily on some triangularity property of the product, but do not use explicitly that the 0-Hecke algebra is a monoid algebra. The thesis of this paper is that considering the general setting of monoids admitting such a triangularity, namely J-trivial monoids, sheds further light on the topic. This is a step to use representation theory to automatically extract combinatorial structures from (monoid) algebras, often in the form of posets and lattices, both from a theoretical and computational point of view, and with an implementation in Sage. Motivated by ongoing work on related monoids associated to Coxeter systems, and building on well-known results in the semi-group community (such as the description of the simple modules or the radical), we describe how most of the data associated to the representation theory (Cartan matrix, quiver) of the algebra of any J-trivial monoid M can be expressed combinatorially by counting appropriate elements in M itself. As a consequence, this data does not depend on the ground field and can be calculated in O(n^2), if not O(nm), where n=|M| and m is the number of generators. Along the way, we construct a triangular decomposition of the identity into orthogonal idempotents, using the usual Möbius inversion formula in the semi-simple quotient (a lattice), followed by an algorithmic lifting step. Applying our results to the 0-Hecke algebra (in all finite types), we recover previously known results and additionally provide an explicit labeling of the edges of the quiver. We further explore special classes of J-trivial monoids, and in particular monoids of order preserving regressive functions on a poset, generalizing known results on the monoids of nondecreasing parking functions.

Combinatorics for graded Cartan matrices of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $q$-analogue of combinatorics concerning the Cartan matrix for the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$ is investigated. We give several descriptions for the determinant of the graded Cartan matrix, which imply some combinatorial identities. A conjectural expression for the elementary divisors is also presented.
Frises
Each acyclic graph, and more generally, each acyclic orientation of the graph associated to a Cartan matrix, allows to define a so-called frise; this is a collection of sequences over the positive natural numbers, one for each vertex of the graph. We prove that if these sequences satisfy a linear recurrence, then the Cartan matrix is of Dynkin type (if the sequences are bounded) or of Euclidean type (if the sequences are unbounded). We prove the converse in all cases, except for the exceptional Euclidean Cartan matrices; we show even that the sequences are rational over the positive natural numbers. We generalize these results by considering frises with variables; as a byproduct we obtain, for the Dynkin and Euclidean type A cases, explicit formulas for the cluster variables, over the semiring of Laurent polynomials over the positive natural numbers generated by the initial variables (which explains simultaneously positivity and the Laurent phenomenon). The general tool are the so-called SL_2-tilings of the plane; these are fillings of the whole discrete plane by elements of a ring, in such a way that each 2 by 2 connected submatrix is of determinant 1.

The numbers game and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain "amplitudes" assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. Combinatorial reasoning is used to show that those connected graphs with negative integer amplitudes for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. This strengthens a result originally due to the second author. A more general result is obtained when certain real number amplitudes are allowed. The resulting graphs are in families, each family corresponding to a finite irreducible Coxeter group. These results are used to demonstrate that the only generalized Cartan matrices for which there exist finite edge-colored ranked posets enjoying a certain structure property are the Cartan matrices for the finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebras. In this setting, classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac--Moody algebras and of the finite Coxeter and Weyl groups are re-derived.

Q-systems as cluster algebras II: Cartan matrix of finite type and the polynomial property
Published in Lett.Math.Phys.89:183-216,2009 • View PublicationBIB
We define the cluster algebra associated with the Q-system for the Kirillov-Reshetikhin characters of the quantum affine algebra $U_q(\hat{\g})$ for any simple Lie algebra g, generalizing the simply-laced case treated in [Kedem 2007]. We describe some special properties of this cluster algebra, and explain its relation to the deformed Q-systems which appeared on our proof of the combinatorial-KR conjecture. We prove that the polynomiality of the cluster variables in terms of the ``initial cluster seeds'', including solutions of the Q-system, is a consequence of the Laurent phenomenon and the boundary conditions. We also give a formulation of both Q-systems and generalized T-systems as cluster algebras with coefficients. This provides a proof of the polynomiality of solutions of generalized T-systems with appropriate boundary conditions.
The $p$-modular descent algebras
Published in Algebr. Represent. Theory 5:101-113 (2002) • Search Publication
The concept of descent algebras over a field of characteristic zero is extended to define descent algebras over a field of prime characteristic. Some basic algebraic structure of the latter, including its radical and irreducible modules, is then determined. The decomposition matrix of the descent algebras of Coxeter group types $A$, $B$, and $D$ are calculated, and used to derive a description of the decomposition matrix of an arbitrary descent algebra. The Cartan matrix of a variety of descent algebras over a finite field is then obtained.

On the periodicity of Coxeter transformations and the non-negativity of their Euler forms
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 428 (2008), 742-753 • View PublicationBIB
We show that for piecewise hereditary algebras, the periodicity of the Coxeter transformation implies the non-negativity of the Euler form. Contrary to previous assumptions, the condition of piecewise heredity cannot be omitted, even for triangular algebras, as demonstrated by incidence algebras of posets. We also give a simple, direct proof, that certain products of reflections, defined for any square matrix A with 2 on its main diagonal, and in particular the Coxeter transformation corresponding to a generalized Cartan matrix, can be expressed as $-A_{+}^{-1} A_{-}^t$, where A_{+}, A_{-} are closely associated with the upper and lower triangular parts of A.

Weighted locally gentle quivers and Cartan matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the class of weighted locally gentle quivers. This naturally extends the class of gentle quivers and gentle algebras, which have been intensively studied in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, to a wider class of potentially infinite-dimensional algebras. Weights on the arrows of these quivers lead to gradings on the corresponding algebras. For the natural grading by path lengths, any locally gentle algebra is a Koszul algebra. Our main result is a general combinatorial formula for the determinant of the weighted Cartan matrix of a weighted locally gentle quiver. This determinant is invariant under graded derived equivalences of the corresponding algebras. We show that this weighted Cartan determinant is a rational function which is completely determined by the combinatorics of the quiver, more precisely by the number and the weight of certain oriented cycles. This leads to combinatorial invariants of the graded derived categories of graded locally gentle algebras.

q-Cartan matrices and combinatorial invariants of derived categories for skewed-gentle algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cartan matrices are of fundamental importance in representation theory. For algebras defined by quivers (i.e. directed graphs) with relations the computation of the entries of the Cartan matrix amounts to counting nonzero paths in the quivers, leading naturally to a combinatorial setting. In this paper we study a refined version, so-called q-Cartan matrices, where each nonzero path is weighted by a power of an indeterminant q according to its length. Specializing q=1 gives the classical Cartan matrix. Our main motivation are derived module categories and their invariants: the invariant factors, and hence the determinant, of the Cartan matrix are preserved by derived equivalences. The paper deals with the important class of (skewed-) gentle algebras which occur naturally in representation theory, especially in the context of derived categories. These algebras are defined in purely combinatorial terms. We determine normal forms for the Cartan matrices of (skewed-) gentle algebras. In particular, we give explicit combinatorial formulae for the invariant factors and thus also for the determinant of the Cartan matrices of skewed-gentle algebras. As an application of our main results we show how one can use our formulae for the notoriously difficult problem of distinguishing derived equivalence classes.

Cluster algebras of finite type and positive symmetrizable matrices
Published in J. London Math. Soc. (2) 73 (2006), no. 3, 545--564 • View PublicationBIB
The paper is motivated by an analogy between cluster algebras and Kac-Moody algebras: both theories share the same classification of finite type objects by familiar Cartan-Killing types. However the underlying combinatorics beyond the two classifications is different: roughly speaking, Kac-Moody algebras are associated with (symmetrizable) Cartan matrices, while cluster algebras correspond to skew-symmetrizable matrices. We study an interplay between the two classes of matrices, in particular, establishing a new criterion for deciding whether a given skew-symmetrizable matrix gives rise to a cluster algebra of finite type.
Properties of some character tables related to the symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine invariants like the Smith normal form and the determinant for certain integral matrices which arise from the character tables of the symmetric groups S_n and their double covers. In particular, we give a simple computation, based on the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions, of the determinant of the regular character table of S_n with respect to an integer r>1. This result had earlier been proved by Olsson in a longer and more indirect manner. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof of the Mathas' Conjecture on the determinant of the Cartan matrix of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. When r is prime we determine the Smith normal form of the regular character table. Taking r large yields the Smith normal form of the full character table of S_n. Analogous results are then given for spin characters.

The peak algebra of the symmetric group revisited
Published in Adv. in Math. 192 (2005), No. 2, 259-309 • View PublicationBIB
The linear span P_n of the sums of all permutations in the symmetric group S_n with a given set of peaks is a sub-algebra of the symmetric group algebra, due to Nyman. This peak algebra is a left ideal of the descent algebra D_n; and the direct sum P of all P_n is a Hopf sub-algebra of the direct sum D of all D_n, dual to the Stembridge algebra of peak functions. In our self-contained approach, peak counterparts of several results on the descent algebra are established, including a simple combinatorial characterization of the algebra P_n; an algebraic characterization of P_n based on the action on the Poincar'e-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the free associative algebra; the display of peak variants of the classical Lie idempotents; an Eulerian-type sub-algebra of P_n; a description of the Jacobson radical of P_n and its nil-potency index, of the principal indecomposable and irreducible P_n-modules, and of the Cartan matrix of P_n. Furthermore, it is shown that the primitive Lie algebra of P is free, and that P is its enveloping algebra.

Cohomology of the Orlik-Solomon algebras and local systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper provides a combinatorial method to decide when the space of local systems with non vanishing first cohomology on the complement to an arrangement of lines in a complex projective plane has as an irreducible component a subgroup of positive dimension. Partial classification of arrangements having such a component of positive dimension and a comparison theorem for cohomology of Orlik-Solomon algebra and cohomology of local systems are given. The methods are based on Vinberg-Kac classification of generalized Cartan matrices and study of pencils of algebraic curves defined by mentioned positive dimensional components.
