On the second powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals
Published in J. Commut. Algebra 3 (2011) 405-430 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study several properties of the second power $I_Δ^2$ of a Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_Δ$ of any dimension. As the main result, we prove that $S/I_Δ$ is Gorenstein whenever $S/I_Δ^2$ is Cohen-Macaulay over any field $K$. Moreover, we give a criterion for the second symbolic power of $I_Δ$ to satisfy $(S_2)$ and to coincide with the ordinary power, respectively. Finally, we provide new examples of Stanley-Reisner ideals whose second powers are Cohen-Macaulay.

Intersecting faces of a simplicial complex via algebraic shifting
Published • View PublicationBIB
A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is {\it $t$-intersecting} if the cardinality of the intersection of every pair of sets in $\mathcal{A}$ is at least $t$, and is an {\it $r$-family} if every set in $\mathcal{A}$ has cardinality $r$. A well-known theorem of Erdős, Ko, and Rado bounds the cardinality of a $t$-intersecting $r$-family of subsets of an $n$-element set, or equivalently of $(r-1)$-dimensional faces of a simplex with $n$ vertices. As a generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, Borg presented a conjecture concerning the size of a $t$-intersecting $r$-family of faces of an arbitrary simplicial complex. He proved his conjecture for shifted complexes. In this paper we give a new proof for this result based on work of Woodroofe. Using algebraic shifting we verify Borg's conjecture in the case of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay $i$-near-cones for $t=i$.

Computable Hilbert Schemes
In this PhD thesis we propose an algorithmic approach to the study of the Hilbert scheme. Developing algorithmic methods, we also obtain general results about Hilbert schemes. In Chapter 1 we discuss the equations defining the Hilbert scheme as subscheme of a suitable Grassmannian and in Chapter 5 we determine a new set of equations of degree lower than the degree of equations known so far. In Chapter 2 we study the most important objects used to project algorithmic techniques, namely Borel-fixed ideals. We determine an algorithm computing all the saturated Borel-fixed ideals with Hilbert polynomial assigned and we investigate their combinatorial properties. In Chapter 3 we show a new type of flat deformations of Borel-fixed ideals which lead us to give a new proof of the connectedness of the Hilbert scheme. In Chapter 4 we construct families of ideals that generalize the notion of family of ideals sharing the same initial ideal with respect to a fixed term ordering. Some of these families correspond to open subsets of the Hilbert scheme and can be used to a local study of the Hilbert scheme. In Chapter 6 we deal with the problem of the connectedness of the Hilbert scheme of locally Cohen-Macaulay curves in the projective 3-space. We show that one of the Hilbert scheme considered a "good" candidate to be non-connected, is instead connected. Moreover there are three appendices that present and explain how to use the implementations of the algorithms proposed.

How to construct a flag complex with a given face vector
A method that often works for constructing a flag complex with a specified face vector is given. This method can also be adapted to construct a vertex-decomposable (and hence Cohen-Macaulay) flag complex with a specified h-vector.

Lefschetz properties and the Veronese construction
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate Lefschetz properties of Veronese subalgebras. We show that, for a sufficiently large $r$, the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese subalgebra of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded $K$-algebra has properties similar to the weak and strong Lefschetz properties, which we call the `almost weak' and `almost strong' Lefschetz properties. By using this result, we obtain new results on $h$- and $g$-polynomials of Veronese subalgebras.
Filter-regular sequences, almost complete intersections and Stanley's conjecture
Let $K$ be a field and $I$ a monomial ideal of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,..., x_n]$ generated by monomials $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$. We show that $S/I$ is pretty clean if either: 1) $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$ is a filter-regular sequence, 2) $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$ is a $d$-sequence; or 3) $I$ is almost complete intersection. In particular, in each of these cases, $S/I$ is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and both Stanley's and $h$-regularity conjectures, on Stanley decompositions, hold for $S/I$. Also, we prove that if $I$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a locally complete intersection simplicial complex on $[n]$, then Stanley's conjecture holds for $S/I$.

Positroid Varieties: Juggling and Geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the cyclic shifts of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov and the present authors. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subset of the affine Weyl group we call bounded juggling patterns. We call the strata positroid varieties. Applying results from the authors' previous work, we show that positroid varieties are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined as schemes by the vanishing of Plucker coordinates. We prove that their associated cohomology classes are represented by affine Stanley functions. This last fact lets us connect Postnikov's and Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis' approaches to quantum Schubert calculus.

Cohen-Macaulayness of generically complete intersection monomial ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we discuss the problem of characterizing the Cohen-Macaulay property of certain families of monomial ideals with fixed radical. More precisely, we consider generically complete intersection monomial ideals whose radical corresponds to special classes of simplicial complexes.

Gluing and Hilbert functions of monomial curves
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 137 (2009), 2225-2232 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, by using the technique of gluing semigroups, we give infinitely many families of 1-dimensional local rings with non-decreasing Hilbert functions. More significantly, these are local rings whose associated graded rings are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. In this sense, we give an effective technique to construct large families of 1-dimensional Gorenstein local rings associated to monomial curves, which support Rossi's conjecture saying that every Gorenstein local ring has non-decreasing Hilbert function.

Cohomological and Combinatorial Methods in the Study of Symbolic Powers and Equations defining Varieties
In this PhD thesis we will discuss some aspects in Commutative Algebra which have interactions with Algebraic Geometry, Representation Theory and Combinatorics. In particular, in the first chapter we will focus on understanding when certain cohomology modules vanish, a classical problem raised by Grothendieck. In the second chapter we will use local cohomology to study the connectedness behavior during a Groebner deformation and the arithmetical rank of certain varieties. In the third chapter, we will investigate the relations between the minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix by using tools from the representation theory of the general linear group (the results of this chapter will appear in a joint paper with Bruns and Conca). In the last chapter we will use combinatorial methods to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of the symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals. In the thesis are included five appendixes with some basic needed facts and a preliminary chapter introducing to local cohomology.

On the Mobius function of a lower Eulerian Cohen-Macaulay poset
Published • View PublicationBIB
A certain inequality is shown to hold for the values of the Mobius function of the poset obtained by attaching a maximum element to a lower Eulerian Cohen-Macaulay poset. In two important special cases, this inequality provides partial results supporting Stanley's nonnegativity conjecture for the toric h-vector of a lower Eulerian Cohen-Macaulay meet-semilattice and Adin's nonnegativity conjecture for the cubical h-vector of a Cohen-Macaulay cubical complex.

A poset fiber theorem for doubly Cohen-Macaulay posets and its applications to non-crossing partitions and injective words
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies topological properties of the lattices of non-crossing partitions of types A and B and of the poset of injective words. Specifically, it is shown that after the removal of the bottom and top elements (if existent) these posets are doubly Cohen-Macaulay. This strengthens the well-known facts that these posets are Cohen-Macaulay. Our results rely on a new poset fiber theorem which turns out to be a useful tool to prove double (homotopy) Cohen-Macaulayness of a poset. Applications to complexes of injective words are also included.

Patch ideals and Peterson varieties
Published in Transformation Groups, December 2012, Volume 17, Issue 4, pp 1011-1036 • View PublicationBIB
Patch ideals encode neighbourhoods of a variety in GL_n/B. For Peterson varieties we determine generators for these ideals and show they are complete intersections, and thus Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein. Consequently, we combinatorially describe the singular locus of the Peterson variety; give an explicit equivariant K-theory localization formula; and extend some results of [B. Kostant '96] and of D. Peterson to intersections of Peterson varieties with Schubert varieties. We conjecture that the projectivized tangent cones are Cohen-Macaulay, and that their h-polynomials are nonnegative and upper-semicontinuous. Similarly, we use patch ideals to briefly analyze other examples of torus invariant subvarieties of GL_n/B, including Richardson varieties and Springer fibers.

Edge ideals: algebraic and combinatorial properties
Published in Progress in Commutative Algebra, Combinatorics and Homology, Vol. 1, 2012, pp. 85-126 • View PublicationBIB
Let C be a clutter and let I(C) be its edge ideal. This is a survey paper on the algebraic and combinatorial properties of R/I(C) and C, respectively. We give a criterion to estimate the regularity of R/I(C) and apply this criterion to give new proofs of some formulas for the regularity. If C is a clutter and R/I(C) is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, we present a formula for the regularity of the ideal of vertex covers of C and give a formula for the projective dimension of R/I(C). We also examine the associated primes of powers of edge ideals, and show that for a graph with a leaf, these sets form an ascending chain.

On the flag f-vector of a graded lattice with nontrivial homology

It is proved that the Boolean algebra of rank n minimizes the flag f-vector among all graded lattices of rank n, whose proper part has nontrivial top-dimensional homology. The analogous statement for the flag h-vector is conjectured in the Cohen-Macaulay case.

Face Numbers of Certain Cohen-Macaulay Flag Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay complex is, in a certain sense, sufficiently "close" to being balanced, then there is a $d$-dimensional balanced Cohen-Macaulay complex having the same $f$-vector. This in turn provides some partial evidence for a conjecture of Kalai on the $f$-vectors of Cohen-Macaulay flag complexes.

Extensions of Toric Varieties
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 18 (2011), No. 1, Research Paper P93 • Search Publication
In this paper, we introduce the notion of "extension" of a toric variety and study its fundamental properties. This gives rise to infinitely many toric varieties with a special property, such as being set theoretic complete intersection or arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein) and having a Cohen-Macaulay tangent cone or a local ring with non-decreasing Hilbert function, from just one single example with the same property, verifying Rossi's conjecture for larger classes and extending some results appeared in literature.

Puzzles, positroid varieties, and equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians
Vakil studied the intersection theory of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian in a very direct way: he degenerated the intersection of a Schubert variety X_mu and opposite Schubert variety X^nu to a union {X^lambda}, with repetition. This degeneration proceeds in stages, and along the way he met a collection of more complicated subvarieties, which he identified as the closures of certain locally closed sets. We show that Vakil's varieties are _positroid varieties_, which in particular shows they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined by the vanishing of Plücker coordinates [Knutson-Lam-Speyer]. We determine the equations of the Vakil variety associated to a partially filled ``puzzle'' (building on the appendix to [Vakil]), and extend Vakil's proof to give a geometric proof of the puzzle rule from [Knutson-Tao '03] for equivariant Schubert calculus. The recent paper [Anderson-Griffeth-Miller] establishes (abstractly; without a formula) three positivity results in equivariant K-theory of flag manifolds G/P. We demonstrate one of these concretely, giving a corresponding puzzle rule.

Projections of Richardson Varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
While the projections of Schubert varieties in a full generalized flag manifold G/B to a partial flag manifold $G/P$ are again Schubert varieties, the projections of Richardson varieties (intersections of Schubert varieties with opposite Schubert varieties) are not always Richardson varieties. The stratification of G/P by projections of Richardson varieties arises in the theory of total positivity and also from Poisson and noncommutative geometry. In this paper we show that many of the geometric properties of Richardson varieties hold more generally for projected Richardson varieties; they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are compatibly Frobenius split with respect to the standard splitting. Indeed, we show that the projected Richardson varieties are the only compatibly split subvarieties, providing an example of the recent theorem [Schwede, Kumar-Mehta] that a Frobenius split scheme has only finitely many compatibly split subvarieties. (The G/B case was treated by [Hague], whose proof we simplify somewhat.) One combinatorial analogue of a Richardson variety is the order complex of the corresponding Bruhat interval in W; this complex is known to be an EL-shellable ball [Bjorner-Wachs '82]. We prove that the projection of such a complex into the order complex of the Bruhat order on W/W_P is again a shellable ball. This requires extensive analysis of "P-Bruhat order", a generalization of the k-Bruhat order of [Bergeron-Sottile '98]. In the case that G/P is minuscule (e.g. a Grassmannian), we show that its Grobner degeneration takes each projected Richardson variety to the Stanley-Reisner scheme of its corresponding ball.

Schubert complexes and degeneracy loci
Published in J. Algebra 337 (2011), 103-125 • View PublicationBIB
Given a generic map between flagged vector bundles on a Cohen-Macaulay variety, we construct maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules with linear resolutions supported on the Schubert-type degeneracy loci. The linear resolution is provided by the Schubert complex, which is the main tool introduced and studied in this paper. These complexes extend the Schubert functors of Kraśkiewicz and Pragacz, and were motivated by the fact that Schur complexes resolve maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules supported on determinantal varieties. The resulting formula in K-theory provides a "linear approximation" of the structure sheaf of the degeneracy locus, which can be used to recover a formula due to Fulton.
