We study combinatorial aspects of the Schubert calculus of the affine Grassmannian Gr associated with SL(n,C). Our main results are: 1) Pieri rules for the Schubert bases of H^*(Gr) and H_*(Gr), which expresses the product of a special Schubert class and an arbitrary Schubert class in terms of Schubert classes. 2) A new combinatorial definition for k-Schur functions, which represent the Schubert basis of H_*(Gr). 3) A combinatorial interpretation of the pairing between homology and cohomology of the affine Grassmannian.
These results are obtained by interpreting the Schubert bases of Gr combinatorially as generating functions of objects we call strong and weak tableaux, which are respectively defined using the strong and weak orders on the affine symmetric group. We define a bijection called affine insertion, generalizing the Robinson-Schensted Knuth correspondence, which sends certain biwords to pairs of tableaux of the same shape, one strong and one weak. Affine insertion offers a duality between the weak and strong orders which does not seem to have been noticed previously.
Our cohomology Pieri rule conjecturally extends to the affine flag manifold, and we give a series of related combinatorial conjectures.

Given two Schubert classes $σ_λ$ and $σ_μ$ in the quantum cohomology of a Grassmannian, we construct a partition $ν$, depending on $λ$ and $μ$, such that $σ_ν$ appears with coefficient 1 in the lowest (or highest) degree part of the quantum product $σ_λ\starσ_μ$. To do this, we show that for any two partitions $λ$ and $μ$, contained in a $k$-by-$(n-k)$ rectangle and such that the 180-degree rotation of one does not overlap the other, there is a third partition $ν$, also contained in the rectangle, such that the Littlewood-Richardson number $c_{λμ}^ν$ is 1.
Kempf collapsing and quiver loci
Kempf [1976] studied proper, G-equivariant maps from equivariant vector bundles over flag manifolds to G-representations V, which he called _collapsings_. We give a simple formula for the G-equivariant cohomology class on V, or_multidegree_, associated to the image of a collapsing: apply a certain sequence of divided difference operators to a certain product of linear polynomials, then divide by the number of components in a general fiber. When that number of components is 1, we construct a desingularization of the image of the collapsing. If in addition the image has rational singularities, we can use the desingularization to give also a formula for the G-equivariant K-class of the image, whose leading term is the multidegree.
Our application is to quiver loci and quiver polynomials. Let Q be a quiver of finite type (A, D, or E, in arbitrary orientation), and assign a vector space to each vertex. Let \Hom denote the (linear) space of representations of Q with these vector spaces. This carries an action of GL, the product of the general linear groups of the individual vector spaces. A_quiver locus_ Ωis the closure in \Hom of a GL-orbit, and its multidegree is the corresponding _quiver polynomial_. Reineke [2004] proved that every ADE quiver locus is the image of a birational Kempf collapsing (giving a desingularization directly).
Using Reineke's collapsings, we give formulae for ADE quiver polynomials, previously only computed in type A (though in this case, our formulae are new). In the A and D cases quiver loci are known to have rational singularities [Bobiński-Zwara 2002], so we also get formulae for their K-classes, which had previously only been computed in equioriented type A (and again our formulae are new).
q-Eulerian Polynomials: Excedance Number and Major index

In this research announcement we present a new q-analog of a classical formula for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. The Eulerian polynomials enumerate permutations according to their number of descents or their number of excedances. Our q-Eulerian polynomials are the enumerators for the joint distribution of the excedance statistic and the major index. There is a vast literature on q-Eulerian polynomials which involve other combinations of Mahonian and Eulerian permutation statistics, but the combination of major index and excedance number seems to have been completely overlooked until now. We use symmetric function theory to prove our formula. In particular, we prove a symmetric function version of our formula, which involves an intriguing new class of symmetric functions. We also present connections with representations of the symmetric group on the homology of a poset recently introduced by Björner and Welker and on the cohomology of the toric variety associated with the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group, studied by Procesi, Stanley, Stembridge, Dolgachev and Lunts.

We prove that the center of a regular block of parabolic category O for the general linear Lie algebra is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of a corresponding Springer fiber. This was conjectured by Khovanov. We also find presentations for the centers of singular blocks, which are cohomology algebras of Spaltenstein varieties.
Quantum Grothendieck Polynomials
Quantum K-theory is a K-theoretic version of quantum cohomology, which was recently defined by Y.-P. Lee. Based on a presentation for the quantum K-theory of the classical flag variety Fl_n, we define and study quantum Grothendieck polynomials. We conjecture that they represent Schubert classes (i.e., the natural basis elements) in the quantum K-theory of Fl_n, and present strong evidence for this conjecture. We describe an efficient algorithm which, if the conjecture is true, computes the quantum K-invariants of Gromov-Witten type for Fl_n. Two explicit constructions for quantum Grothendieck polynomials are presented. The natural generalizations of several properties of Grothendieck polynomials and of the quantum Schubert polynomials due to Fomin, Gelfand, and Postnikov are proved for our quantum Grothendieck polynomials. For instance, we use a quantization map satisfying a factorization property similar to the cohomology quantization map, and we derive a Monk-type multiplication formula. We also define quantum double Grothendieck polynomials and derive a Cauchy identity. Our constructions are considerably more complex than those for quantum Schubert polynomials. In particular, a crucial ingredient in our work is the Pieri formula for Grothendieck polynomials due to the first author and Sottile.

The necessary and sufficient Horn inequalities which determine the non-vanishing Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in the cohomology of a Grassmannian are recursive in that they are naturally indexed by non-vanishing Littlewood-Richardson coefficients on smaller Grassmannians. We show how non-vanishing in the Schubert calculus for cominuscule flag varieties is similarly recursive. For these varieties, the non-vanishing of products of Schubert classes is controlled by the non-vanishing products on smaller cominuscule flag varieties. In particular, we show that the lists of Schubert classes whose product is non-zero naturally correspond to the integer points in the feasibility polytope, which is defined by inequalities coming from non-vanishing products of Schubert classes on smaller cominuscule flag varieties. While the Grassmannian is cominuscule, our necessary and sufficient inequalities are different than the classical Horn inequalities.

A subset K of R^n gives rise to a formal Laurent series with monomials corresponding to lattice points in K. Under suitable hypotheses, this series represents a rational function R(K). Michel Brion has discovered a surprising formula relating the rational function R(P) of a lattice polytope P to the sum of rational functions corresponding to the supporting cones subtended at the vertices of P. The result is re-phrased and generalised in the language of cohomology of line bundles on complete toric varieties. Brion's formula is the special case of an ample line bundle on a projective toric variety. - The paper also contains some general remarks on the cohomology of torus-equivariant line bundles on complete toric varieties, valid over noetherian ground rings.

In this paper we first give a lower bound on multiplicities for Buchsbaum homogeneous $k$-algebras $A$ in terms of the dimension $d$, the codimension $c$, the initial degree $q$, and the length of the local cohomology modules of $A$. Next, we introduce the notion of Buchsbaum $k$-algebras with minimal multiplicity of degree $q$, and give several characterizations for those rings. In particular, we will show that those algebras have linear free resolutions. Further, we will give many examples of those algebras.

We consider certain modules of the symmetric groups whose basis elements are called tabloids. Some of these modules are isomorphic to subspaces of the cohomology rings of subvarieties of flag varieties as modules of the symmetric groups. We give a combinatorial description for some weighted sums of their characters, i.e., we introduce combinatorial objects called $(ρ,\Ll)$-tabloids and rewrite weighted sums of characters as the numbers of these combinatorial objects. We also consider the meaning of these combinatorial objects, i.e., we construct a correspondence between $(ρ,\Ll)$-tabloids and tabloids whose images are eigenvectors of the action of an element of cycle type $ρ$ in quotient modules.

The algebra of truncated polynomials A_m=Z[x]/(x^m) plays an important role in the theory of Khovanov and Khovanov-Rozansky homology of links. We have demonstrated that Hochschild homology is closely related to Khovanov homology via comultiplication free graph cohomology. It is not difficult to compute Hochschild homology of A_m and the only torsion, equal to Z_m, appears in gradings (i,m(i+1)/2) for any positive odd i. We analyze here the grading of graph cohomology which is producing torsion for a polygon. We find completely the cohomology H^{1,v-1}_{A_2}(G) and H^{1,2v-3}_{A_3}(G). The group H^{1,v-1}_{A_2}(G) is closely related to the standard graph cohomology, except that the boundary of an edge is the sum of endpoints instead of the difference. The result about H^{1,v-1}_{A_2}(G) gives as a corollary a fact about Khovanov homology of alternating and + or - adequate link diagrams. The group H^{1,2v-3}_{A_3}(G) can be computed from the homology of a cell complex, X_{Δ,4}(G), built from the graph G. In particular, we prove that A_3 cohomology can have any torsion. We give a simple and complete characterization of those graphs which have torsion in cohomology H^{1,2v-3}_{A_3}(G) (e.g. loopless graphs which have a 3-cycle). We also construct graphs which have the same (di)chromatic polynomial but different H^{1,2v-3}_{A_3}(G). Finally, we give examples of calculations of width of H^{1,*}_{A_3}(G) and of cohomology H^{1,(m-1)(v-2)+1}_{A_m}(G) for m>3.

We consider a formula of Stanley that expresses the Ehrhart generating polynomial of a polyhedral complex in terms of the h-polynomials of toric varieties. We prove that the coefficients in this expression are all non-negative and show that these coefficients can be found using the decomposition theorem in intersection cohomology.
Alcove path and Nichols-Woronowicz model of the equivariant $K$-theory of generalized flag varieties

Fomin and Kirillov initiated a line of research into the realization of the cohomology and $K$-theory of generalized flag varieties $G/B$ as commutative subalgebras of certain noncommutative algebras. This approach has several advantages, which we discuss. This paper contains the most comprehensive result in a series of papers related to the mentioned line of research. More precisely, we give a model for the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of a generalized flag variety $K_T(G/B)$ in terms of a certain braided Hopf algebra called the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra. Our model is based on the Chevalley-type multiplication formula for $K_T(G/B)$ due to the first author and Postnikov; this formula is stated using certain operators defined in terms of so-called alcove paths (and the corresponding affine Weyl group). Our model is derived using a type-independent and concise approach.
The Multiplicity Conjecture for Barycentric Subdivisions

For a simplicial complex $Δ$ we study the effect of barycentric subdivision on ring theoretic invariants of its Stanley-Reisner ring. In particular, for Stanley-Reisner rings of barycentric subdivisions we verify a conjecture by Huneke and Herzog & Srinivasan, that relates the multiplicity of a standard graded $k$-algebra to the product of the maximal and minimal shifts in its minimal free resolution up to the height. On the way to proving the conjecture we develop new and list well known results on behavior of dimension, Hilbert series, multiplicity, local cohomology, depth and regularity when passing from the Stanley-Reisner ring of $Δ$ to the one of its barycentric subdivision.

Following a construction of Stanley we consider toric face rings associated to rational pointed fans. This class of rings is a common generalization of the concepts of Stanley--Reisner and affine monoid algebras. The main goal of this article is to unify parts of the theories of Stanley--Reisner- and affine monoid algebras. We consider (non-pure) shellable fan's and the Cohen--Macaulay property. Moreover, we study the local cohomology, the canonical module and the Gorenstein property of a toric face ring.
Filtering bases and cohomology of nilpotent subalgebras of Witt and $\widetilde{sl}_2$ Lie algebras

We study the cohomology with trivial coefficients of Lie algebras L_k of the polynomial vector fields on the line with zero $k$-jet, (k>=1), and the cohomology of the similar subalgebras {L}_k of the polynomial loops algebra $\widetilde{sl}_2$. In both cases we construct the special bases (filtering bases) in the external complexes of these algebras. A spectral sequence based on this construction allows to completely find the cohomology of L_k and {L}_k. We also apply the filtering bases to find the spectral resolution of the Laplace operators for algebras L_1 and L_0, and obtain explicit formulas for the representing cycles of homologies for algebras L_k and {L}_k by means of the Schur polynomials.

This paper defines and studies permutation representations on the equivariant cohomology of Schubert varieties, as representations both over C and over C[t_1, t_2,...,t_n]. We show these group actions are the same as an action of simple transpositions studied geometrically by M. Brion, and give topological meaning to the divided difference operators studied by Berstein-Gelfand-Gelfand, Demazure, Kostant-Kumar, and others. We analyze these representations using the combinatorial approach to equivariant cohomology introduced by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. We find that each permutation representation on equivariant cohomology produces a representation on ordinary cohomology that is trivial, though the equivariant representation is not.

This paper is a survey of our work based on the stratified Morse theory of Goresky and MacPherson. First we discuss the Morse theory of Euclidean space stratified by an arrangement. This is used to show that the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement admits a minimal cell decomposition. Next we review the construction of a cochain complex whose cohomology computes the local system cohomology of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement. Then we present results on the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of arrangements of a fixed combinatorial type in rank one local system cohomology.

Confirming a conjecture of Mark Shimozono, we identify polynomial representatives for the Schubert classes of the affine Grassmannian as the k-Schur functions in homology and affine Schur functions in cohomology. Our results rely on Kostant and Kumar's nilHecke ring, work of Peterson on the homology of based loops on a compact group, and earlier work of ours on non-commutative k-Schur functions.
Schubert Classes in the Equivariant K-Theory and Equivariant Cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Ghorpade-Raghavan, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Lagrangian Grassmannian.
