Kempf collapsing and quiver loci
Kempf [1976] studied proper, G-equivariant maps from equivariant vector bundles over flag manifolds to G-representations V, which he called _collapsings_. We give a simple formula for the G-equivariant cohomology class on V, or_multidegree_, associated to the image of a collapsing: apply a certain sequence of divided difference operators to a certain product of linear polynomials, then divide by the number of components in a general fiber. When that number of components is 1, we construct a desingularization of the image of the collapsing. If in addition the image has rational singularities, we can use the desingularization to give also a formula for the G-equivariant K-class of the image, whose leading term is the multidegree.
Our application is to quiver loci and quiver polynomials. Let Q be a quiver of finite type (A, D, or E, in arbitrary orientation), and assign a vector space to each vertex. Let \Hom denote the (linear) space of representations of Q with these vector spaces. This carries an action of GL, the product of the general linear groups of the individual vector spaces. A_quiver locus_ Ωis the closure in \Hom of a GL-orbit, and its multidegree is the corresponding _quiver polynomial_. Reineke [2004] proved that every ADE quiver locus is the image of a birational Kempf collapsing (giving a desingularization directly).
Using Reineke's collapsings, we give formulae for ADE quiver polynomials, previously only computed in type A (though in this case, our formulae are new). In the A and D cases quiver loci are known to have rational singularities [Bobiński-Zwara 2002], so we also get formulae for their K-classes, which had previously only been computed in equioriented type A (and again our formulae are new).

We prove a root system uniform, concise combinatorial rule for Schubert calculus of_minuscule_ and_cominuscule_ flag manifolds G/P (the latter are also known as "compact Hermitian symmetric spaces"). We connect this geometry to the poset combinatorics of [Proctor '04], thereby giving a generalization of the [Schützenberger `77]_jeu de taquin_ formulation of the Littlewood-Richardson rule that computes the intersection numbers of Grassmannian Schubert varieties. Our proof introduces_cominuscule recursions_, a general technique to relate the numbers for different Lie types. A discussion about connections of our rule to (geometric) representation theory is also briefly entertained.

We investigate the line arrangement that results from intersecting d complete flags in C^n. We give a combinatorial description of the matroid T_{n,d} that keeps track of the linear dependence relations among these lines. We prove that the bases of the matroid T_{n,3} characterize the triangles with holes which can be tiled with unit rhombi. More generally, we provide evidence for a conjectural connection between the matroid T_{n,d}, the triangulations of the product of simplices Delta_{n-1} x Δ_{d-1}, and the arrangements of d tropical hyperplanes in tropical (n-1)-space. Our work provides a simple and effective criterion to ensure the vanishing of many Schubert structure constants in the flag manifold, and a new perspective on Billey and Vakil's method for computing the non-vanishing ones.

We present a combinatorial and computational commutative algebra methodology for studying singularities of Schubert varieties of flag manifolds.
We define the combinatorial notion of *interval pattern avoidance*. For "reasonable" invariants P of singularities, we geometrically prove that this governs (1) the P-locus of a Schubert variety, and (2) which Schubert varieties are globally not P. The prototypical case is P="singular"; classical pattern avoidance applies admirably for this choice [Lakshmibai-Sandhya'90], but is insufficient in general.
Our approach is analyzed for some common invariants, including Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, multiplicity, factoriality, and Gorensteinness, extending [Woo-Yong'05]; the description of the singular locus (which was independently proved by [Billey-Warrington '03], [Cortez '03], [Kassel-Lascoux-Reutenauer'03], [Manivel'01]) is also thus reinterpreted.
Our methods are amenable to computer experimentation, based on computing with *Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals* (a class of generalized determinantal ideals) using Macaulay 2. This feature is supplemented by a collection of open problems and conjectures.
Two step flag manifolds and the Horn conjecture
We give a simplification of Belkale's geometric proof of the Horn conjecture. Our approach uses the geometry of two-step flag manifolds to explain the occurrence of the Horn inequalities in a very straightforward way. The arguments for both necessity and sufficiency of the Horn inequalities are fairly conceptual when viewed in this framework. We provide examples to illustrate the method of proof.
Bruhat intervals as rooks on skew Ferrers boards
We characterise the permutations pi such that the elements in the closed lower Bruhat interval [id,pi] of the symmetric group correspond to non-taking rook configurations on a skew Ferrers board. It turns out that these are exactly the permutations pi such that [id,pi] corresponds to a flag manifold defined by inclusions, studied by Gasharov and Reiner.
Our characterisation connects the Poincare polynomials (rank-generating function) of Bruhat intervals with q-rook polynomials, and we are able to compute the Poincare polynomial of some particularly interesting intervals in the finite Weyl groups A_n and B_n. The expressions involve q-Stirling numbers of the second kind.
As a by-product of our method, we present a new Stirling number identity connected to both Bruhat intervals and the poly-Bernoulli numbers defined by Kaneko.

Using a blend of combinatorics and geometry, we give an algorithm for algebraically finding all flags in any zero-dimensional intersection of Schubert varieties with respect to three transverse flags, and more generally, any number of flags. In particular, the number of flags in a triple intersection is also a structure constant for the cohomology ring of the flag manifold. Our algorithm is based on solving a limited number of determinantal equations for each intersection (far fewer than the naive approach). These equations may be used to compute Galois and monodromy groups of intersections of Schubert varieties. We are able to limit the number of equations by using the permutation arrays of Eriksson and Linusson, and their permutation array varieties, introduced as generalizations of Schubert varieties. We show that there exists a unique permutation array corresponding to each realizable Schubert problem and give a simple recurrence to compute the corresponding rank table, giving in particular a simple criterion for a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient to be 0. We describe pathologies of Eriksson and Linusson's permutation array varieties (failure of existence, irreducibility, equidimensionality, and reducedness of equations), and define the more natural permutation array schemes. In particular, we give several counterexamples to the Realizability Conjecture based on classical projective geometry. Finally, we give examples where Galois/monodromy groups experimentally appear to be smaller than expected.

We study a family of polynomials whose values express degrees of Schubert varieties in the generalized complex flag manifold G/B. The polynomials are given by weighted sums over saturated chains in the Bruhat order. We derive several explicit formulas for these polynomials, and investigate their relations with Schubert polynomials, harmonic polynomials, Demazure characters, and generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the second half of the paper, we concern with the case of to the classical flag manifold of Lie type A and discuss related combinatorial objects: flagged Schur polynomials, 312-avoiding permutations, generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, the inverse Schubert-Kostka matrix, parking functions, and binary trees.

We derive explicit Pieri-type multiplication formulas in the Grothendieck ring of a flag variety. These expand the product of an arbitrary Schubert class and a special Schubert class in the basis of Schubert classes. These special Schubert classes are indexed by a cycle which has either the form (k-p+1,k-p+2,...,k+1) or the form (k+p,k+p-1,...,k), and are pulled back from a Grassmannian projection. Our formulas are in terms of certain labeled chains in the k-Bruhat order on the symmetric group and are combinatorial in that they involve no cancellations. We also show that the multiplicities in the Pieri formula are naturally certain binomial coefficients.

K. Ding studied a class of Schubert varieties X_λin type A partial flag manifolds, corresponding to integer partitions λand in bijection with dominant permutations. He observed that the Schubert cell structure of X_λis indexed by maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board B_λ, and that the integral cohomology groups H^*(X_λ; Zz), H^*(X_μ; Zz) are additively isomorphic exactly when the Ferrers boards B_λ, B_μsatisfy the combinatorial condition of rook-equivalence.
We classify the varieties X_λup to isomorphism, distinguishing them by their graded cohomology rings with integer coefficients. The crux of our approach is studying the nilpotence orders of linear forms in the cohomology ring.

We give an explicit natural identification between the quiver coefficients of Buch and Fulton, decomposition coefficients for Schubert polynomials, and the Schubert structure constants for flag manifolds. This is also achieved in K-theory where we give a direct argument that the decomposition coefficients have alternating signs, based on a theorem of Brion, which then implies that the quiver coefficients have alternating signs. Our identification shows that known combinatorial formulas for the latter two numbers give formulas for the quiver coefficients.

We recall the root game, introduced in an earlier paper, which gives a fairly powerful sufficient condition for non-vanishing of Schubert calculus on a generalised flag manifold G/B. We show that it gives a necessary and sufficient rule for non-vanishing of Schubert calculus on Grassmannians. In particular, a Littlewood-Richardson number is non-zero if and only if it is possible to win the corresponding root game. More generally, the rule can be used to determine whether or not a product of several Schubert classes on Gr_l(n) is non-zero in a manifestly symmetric way. Finally, we give a geometric interpretation of root games for Grassmannian Schubert problems.
A Schubert calculus recurrence from the noncomplex W-action on G/B
In this paper, as in our previous "Descent-cycling in Schubert calculus" math.CO/0009112, we study the structure constants in equivariant cohomology of flag manifolds G/B. In this one we give a recurrence (which is frequently, but alas not always, positive) to compute these one by one, using the non-complex action of the Weyl group on G/B.
Probably the most noteworthy feature of this recurrence is that to compute a particular structure constant c_{lambda,mu}^nu, one does not have to compute the whole product S_lambda * S_mu.

A purely combinatorial construction of the quantum cohomology ring of the flag manifold $G/B$ is presented. We show that the ring we construct is commutative, associative and satisfies the usual grading condition. By using results of two of our previous papers, we obtain a presentation of this ring in terms of generators and relations, as well as formulas for quantum Giambelli polynomials. We show that these polynomials satisfy a certain orthogonality property, which - for G=SL_n(C) - was proved previously by Fomin, Gelfand and Postnikov.
Quantum Bruhat graph and Schubert polynomials

The quantum Bruhat graph, which is an extension of the graph formed by covering relations in the Bruhat order, is naturally related to the quantum cohomology ring of G/B. We enhance a result of Fulton and Woodward by showing that the minimal monomial in the quantum parameters that occurs in the quantum product of two Schubert classes has a simple interpretation in terms of directed paths in this graph.
We define path Schubert polynomials, which are quantum cohomology analogues of skew Schubert polynomials recently introduced by Lenart and Sottile. They are given by sums over paths in the quantum Bruhat graph of type A. The 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants for the flag manifold are expressed in terms of these polynomials. This construction gives a combinatorial description for the set of all monomials in the quantum parameters that occur in the quantum product of two Schubert classes.
Smoothness of Schubert varieties via patterns in root systems

The aim of this article is to present a smoothness criterion for Schubert varieties in generalized flag manifolds $G/B$ in terms of patterns in root systems. We generalize Lakshmibai-Sandhya's well-known result that says that a Schubert variety in $SL(n)/B$ is smooth if and only if the corresponding permutation avoids the patterns 3412 and 4231. Our criterion is formulated uniformly in general Lie theoretic terms. We define a notion of pattern in Weyl group elements and show that a Schubert variety is smooth (or rationally smooth) if and only if the corresponding element of the Weyl group avoids a certain finite list of patterns. These forbidden patterns live only in root subsystems with star-shaped Dynkin diagrams. In the simply-laced case the list of forbidden patterns is especially simple: besides two patterns of type $A_3$ that appear in Lakshmibai-Sandhya's criterion we only need one additional forbidden pattern of type $D_4$. Remarkably, several other important classes of elements in Weyl groups can also be described in terms of forbidden patterns. For example, the fully commutative elements in Weyl groups have such a characterization. In order to prove our criterion we used several known results for the classical types. For the exceptional types, our proof is based on computer verifications. In order to conduct such a verification for the computationally challenging type $E_8$, we derived several general results on Poincaré polynomials of cohomology rings of Schubert varieties based on parabolic decomposition, which have an independent interest.

We define skew Schubert polynomials to be normal form (polynomial) representatives of certain classes in the cohomology of a flag manifold. We show that this definition extends a recent construction of Schubert polynomials due to Bergeron and Sottile in terms of certain increasing labeled chains in Bruhat order of the symmetric group. These skew Schubert polynomials expand in the basis of Schubert polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients that are precisely the structure constants of the cohomology of the complex flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert classes. We rederive the construction of Bergeron and Sottile in a purely combinatorial way, relating it to the construction of Schubert polynomials in terms of rc-graphs.

Our main theorems provide a single geometric setting in which polynomial representatives for Schubert classes in the integral cohomology ring of the flag manifold are determined uniquely, and have positive coefficients for geometric reasons. This results in a geometric explanation for the naturality of Schubert polynomials and their associated combinatorics.
Given a permutation w in S_n, we consider a determinantal ideal I_w whose generators are certain minors in the generic n x n matrix (filled with independent variables). Using `multidegrees' as simple algebraic substitutes for torus-equivariant cohomology classes on vector spaces, our main theorems describe, for each ideal I_w:
- variously graded multidegrees and Hilbert series in terms of ordinary and double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials;
- a Gröbner basis consisting of minors in the generic n x n matrix;
- the Stanley-Reisner complex of the initial ideal in terms of known combinatorial diagrams associated to permutations in S_n; and
- a procedure inductive on weak Bruhat order for listing the facets of this complex, thereby generating the coefficients of Schubert polynomials by a positive recursion on combinatorial diagrams.
We show that the initial ideal is Cohen-Macaulay, by identifying the Stanley-Reisner complex as a special kind of ``subword complex in S_n'', which we define generally for arbitrary Coxeter groups, and prove to be shellable by giving an explicit vertex decomposition. We also prove geometrically a general positivity statement for multidegrees of subschemes.
A Pieri-type Formula for the Equivariant Cohomology of the Flag Manifold
We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for certain structure constants of the T-equivariant cohomology of the flag manifold SLn/B. Our result generalizes the Pieri-type formula in ordinary cohomology proved by Sottile in 1996. Our result also gives a Pieri-type formula for the double Schubert polynomials introduced by Lascoux and Schutzenberger.
