We characterize pure lexsegment complexes which are Cohen-Macaulay in arbitrary codimension. More precisely, we prove that any lexsegment complex is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is pure and its one dimensional links are connected, and, a lexsegment flag complex is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is pure and connected. We show that any non-Cohen-Macaulay lexsegment complex is a Buchsbaum complex if and only if it is a pure disconnected flag complex. For $t\ge 2$, a lexsegment complex is strictly Cohen-Macaulay in codimension $t$ if and only if it is the join of a lexsegment pure disconnected flag complex with a $(t-2)$-dimensional simplex. When the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a pure lexsegment complex is not quadratic, the complex is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is Cohen-Macaulay in some codimension. Our results are based on a characterization of Cohen-Macaulay and Buchsbaum lexsegment complexes by Bonanzinga, Sorrenti and Terai.
A generalized lower bound theorem for balanced manifolds

A simplicial complex of dimension $d-1$ is said to be balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. Juhnke-Kubitzke and Murai proved an analogue of the generalized lower bound theorem for balanced simplicial polytopes. We establish a generalization of their result to balanced triangulations of closed homology manifolds and balanced triangulations of orientable homology manifolds with boundary under an additional assumption that all proper links of these triangulations have the weak Lefschetz property. As a corollary, we show that if $Δ$ is an arbitrary balanced triangulation of any closed homology manifold of dimension $d-1 \geq 3$, then $2h_2(Δ) - (d-1)h_1(Δ) \geq 4{d \choose 2}(\tildeβ_1(Δ)-\tildeβ_0(Δ))$, thus verifying a conjecture by Klee and Novik. To prove these results we develop the theory of flag $h''$-vectors.

We study the equivariant oriented cohomology ring $h_T(G/P)$ of partial flag varieties using the moment map approach. We define the right Hecke action on this cohomology ring, and then prove that the respective Bott-Samelson classes in $h_{T}(G/P)$ can be obtained by applying this action to the fundamental class of the identity point, hence generalizing previously known results by Brion, Knutson, Peterson, Tymoczko and others.
We then focus on the equivariant oriented cohomology theory corresponding to the 2-parameter Todd genus. We give a new interpretation of Deodhar's construction of the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. Based on it, we define the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig (KL) Schubert classes independently of a reduced word. We make a positivity conjecture, and a conjecture about the relationship of such classes with smoothness of Schubert varieties. We then prove several special cases.
Geodesic and curvature of piecewise flat Finsler surfaces

A piecewise flat Finsler metric on a triangulated surface $M$ is a metric whose restriction to any triangle is a flat triangle in some Minkowski space with straight edges. One of the main purposes of this work is to study the properties of geodesics on a piecewise flat Finsler surface, especially when it meets a vertex. Using the edge-crossing equation, we define two classes of piecewise flat Finsler surfaces, namely, Landsberg type and Berwald type. We deduce an explicit condition for a geodesic to be extendable at a vertex, and define the curvature which measures the \textit{amount} of such extensions. The dependence of the curvature on an incoming or outgoing tangent direction corresponds to the feature of flag curvature in Finsler geometry. When the piecewise flat Finsler surface is of Landsberg type, the curvature is only relevant to the vertex, and we prove a combinatoric Gauss-Bonnet formula which generalizes both the Gauss-Bonnet formulas for piecewise flat Riemannian manifolds and for smooth Landsberg surfaces.
Simplicial Complexes are Game Complexes

Strong placement games (SP-games) are a class of combinatorial games whose structure allows one to describe the game via simplicial complexes. A natural question is whether well-known invariants of combinatorial games, such as "game value", appear as invariants of the simplicial complexes. This paper is the first step in that direction. We show that every simplicial complex encodes a certain type of SP-game (called an "invariant SP-game") whose ruleset is independent of the board it is played on. We also show that in the class of SP-games isomorphic simplicial complexes correspond to isomorphic game trees, and hence equal game values. We also study a subclass of SP-games corresponding to flag complexes, showing that there is always a game whose corresponding complex is a flag complex no matter which board it is played on.

We show that Simion's type $B$ associahedron is combinatorially equivalent to a pulling triangulation of a type $B$ root polytope called the Legendre polytope. Furthermore, we show that every pulling triangulation of the Legendre polytope yields a flag complex. Our triangulation refines a decomposition of the Legendre polytope given by Cho. We extend Cho's cyclic group action to the triangulation in such a way that it corresponds to rotating centrally symmetric triangulations of a regular $(2n+2)$-gon. Finally, we present a bijection between the faces of the Simion's type $B$ associahedron and Delannoy paths.
Self dual reflexive simplices with Eulerian polynomials

A lattice polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is called reflexive if its dual $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ is a lattice polytope. The property that $\mathcal{P}$ is unimodularly equivalent to $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ does not hold in general, and in fact there are few examples of such polytopes. In this note, we introduce a new reflexive simplex $Q_n$ which has this property. Additionally, we show that $δ$-polynomalial of $Q_n$ is the Eulerian polynomial and show the existence of a regular, flag, unimodular triangulation.
Flag Algebras: A First Glance
The theory of flag algebras, introduced by Razborov in 2007, has opened the way to a systematic approach to the development of computer-assisted proofs in extremal combinatorics. It makes it possible to derive bounds for parameters in extremal combinatorics with the help of a computer, in a semi-automated manner. This article describes the main points of the theory in a complete way, using Mantel's theorem as a guiding example.

We study a family of finite--dimensional representations of the hyperspecial parabolic subalgebra of the twisted affine Lie algebra of type $\tt A_2^{(2)}$. We prove that these modules admit a decreasing filtration whose sections are isomorphic to stable Demazure modules in an integrable highest weight module of sufficiently large level. In particular, we show that any stable level $m'$ Demazure module admits a filtration by level $m$ Demazure modules for all $m\ge m'$. We define the graded and weighted generating functions which encode the multiplicity of a given Demazure module and establish a recursive formulae. In the case when $m'=1,2$ and $m=2,3$ we determine these generating functions completely and show that they define hypergeoemetric series and that they are related to the $q$--Fibonacci polynomials defined by Carlitz.
Maximal Newton points and the quantum Bruhat graph
We discuss a surprising relationship between the partially ordered set of Newton points associated to an affine Schubert cell and the quantum cohomology of the complex flag variety. The main theorem provides a combinatorial formula for the unique maximum element in this poset in terms of paths in the quantum Bruhat graph, whose vertices are indexed by elements in the finite Weyl group. Key to establishing this connection is the fact that paths in the quantum Bruhat graph encode saturated chains in the strong Bruhat order on the affine Weyl group. This correspondence is also fundamental in the work of Lam and Shimozono establishing Peterson's isomorphism between the quantum cohomology of the finite flag variety and the homology of the affine Grassmannian. One important geometric application of the present work is an inequality which provides a necessary condition for non-emptiness of certain affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine flag variety.

A Gelfand-Cetlin polytope is a convex polytope obtained as an image of certain completely integrable system on a partial flag variety. In this paper, we give an equivalent description of the face structure of a GC-polytope in terms of so called the face structure of a ladder diagram. Using our description, we obtain a partial differential equation whose solution is the exponential generating function of f-vectors of GC-polytopes. This solves the open problem (2) posed by Gusev, Kritchenko, and Timorin in [GKT].
Symmetric Sums of Squares over $k$-Subset Hypercubes

We consider the problem of finding sum of squares (sos) expressions to establish the non-negativity of a symmetric polynomial over a discrete hypercube whose coordinates are indexed by the $k$-element subsets of $[n]$. For simplicity, we focus on the case $k=2$, but our results extend naturally to all values of $k \geq 2$. We develop a variant of the Gatermann-Parrilo symmetry-reduction method tailored to our setting that allows for several simplifications and a connection to flag algebras.
We show that every symmetric polynomial that has a sos expression of a fixed degree also has a succinct sos expression whose size depends only on the degree and not on the number of variables. Our method bypasses much of the technical difficulties needed to apply the Gatermann-Parrilo method, and offers flexibility in obtaining succinct sos expressions that are combinatorially meaningful. As a byproduct of our results, we arrive at a natural representation-theoretic justification for the concept of flags as introduced by Razborov in his flag algebra calculus. Furthermore, this connection exposes a family of non-negative polynomials that cannot be certified with any fixed set of flags, answering a question of Razborov in the context of our finite setting.
Two double poset polytopes

To every poset P, Stanley (1986) associated two polytopes, the order polytope and the chain polytope, whose geometric properties reflect the combinatorial qualities of P. This construction allows for deep insights into combinatorics by way of geometry and vice versa. Malvenuto and Reutenauer (2011) introduced 'double posets', that is, (finite) sets equipped with two partial orders, as a generalization of Stanley's labelled posets. Many combinatorial constructions can be naturally phrased in terms of double posets. We introduce the 'double order polytope' and the 'double chain polytope' and we amply demonstrate that they geometrically capture double posets, i.e., the interaction between the two partial orders. We describe the facial structures, Ehrhart polynomials, and volumes of these polytopes in terms of the combinatorics of double posets. We also describe a curious connection to Geissinger's valuation polytopes and we characterize 2-level polytopes among our double poset polytopes.
Fulkerson's 'anti-blocking' polytopes from combinatorial optimization subsume stable set polytopes of graphs and chain polytopes of posets. We determine the geometry of Minkowski- and Cayley sums of anti-blocking polytopes. In particular, we describe a canonical subdivision of Minkowski sums of anti-blocking polytopes that facilitates the computation of Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomials and volumes. This also yields canonical triangulations of double poset polytopes.
Finally, we investigate the affine semigroup rings associated to double poset polytopes. We show that they have quadratic Groebner bases, which gives an algebraic description of the unimodular flag triangulations described in the first part.
The geometry and combinatorics of Springer fibers

This survey paper describes Springer fibers, which are used in one of the earliest examples of a geometric representation. We will compare and contrast them with Schubert varieties, another family of subvarieties of the flag variety that play an important role in representation theory and combinatorics, but whose geometry is in many respects simpler. The end of the paper describes a way that Springer fibers and Schubert varieties are related, as well as open questions.
Minimum number of edges that occur in odd cycles

If a graph has $n\ge4k$ vertices and more than $n^2/4$ edges, then it contains a copy of $C_{2k+1}$. In 1992, Erdős, Faudree and Rousseau showed even more, that the number of edges that occur in a triangle is at least $2\lfloor n/2\rfloor+1$, and this bound is tight. They also showed that the minimum number of edges that occur in a $C_{2k+1}$ for $k\ge2$ is at least $11n^2/144-O(n)$, and conjectured that for any $k\ge2$, the correct lower bound should be $2n^2/9-O(n)$. Very recently, Füredi and Maleki constructed a counterexample for $k=2$ and proved asymptotically matching lower bound, namely that for any $\varepsilon>0$ graphs with $(1+\varepsilon)n^2/4$ edges contain at least $(2+\sqrt{2})n^2/16 \approx 0.2134n^2$ edges that occur in $C_5$.
In this paper, we use a different approach to tackle this problem and obtain the following stronger result: Any $n$-vertex graph with at least $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor+1$ edges has at least $(2+\sqrt{2})n^2/16-O(n^{15/8})$ edges that occur in $C_5$. Next, for all $k\ge 3$ and $n$ sufficiently large, we determine the exact minimum number of edges that occur in $C_{2k+1}$ for $n$-vertex graphs with more than $n^2/4$ edges, and show it is indeed equal to $\lfloor\frac{n^2}4\rfloor+1-\lfloor\frac{n+4}6\rfloor\lfloor\frac{n+1}6\rfloor=2n^2/9-O(n)$. For both results, we give a structural description of the extremal configurations as well as obtain the corresponding stability results, which answer a conjecture of Füredi and Maleki.
The main ingredient is a novel approach that combines the flag algebras together with ideas from finite forcibility of graph limits. This approach allowed us to keep track of the extra edge needed to guarantee an existence of a $C_{2k+1}$. Also, we establish the first application of semidefinite method in a setting, where the set of tight examples has exponential size, and arises from different constructions.

A graph $Γ$ is called $G$-symmetric if it admits $G$ as a group of automorphisms acting transitively on the set of ordered pairs of adjacent vertices. We give a classification of $G$-symmetric graphs $Γ$ with $V(Γ)$ admitting a nontrivial $G$-invariant partition $\mathcal{B}$ such that there is exactly one edge of $Γ$ between any two distinct blocks of $\mathcal{B}$. This is achieved by giving a classification of $(G, 2)$-point-transitive and $G$-block-transitive designs $\mathcal{D}$ together with $G$-orbits $Ω$ on the flag set of $\mathcal{D}$ such that $G_{σ, L}$ is transitive on $L \setminus \{σ\}$ and $L \cap N = \{σ\}$ for distinct $(σ, L), (σ, N) \in Ω$, where $G_{σ, L}$ is the setwise stabilizer of $L$ in the stabilizer $G_σ$ of $σ$ in $G$. Along the way we determine all imprimitive blocks of $G_σ$ on $V \setminus \{σ\}$ for every $2$-transitive group $G$ on a set $V$, where $σ\in V$.
Asymptotics of Ramsey numbers of double stars
A double star $S(n,m)$ is the graph obtained by joining the center of a star with $n$ leaves to a center of a star with $m$ leaves by an edge. Let $r(S(n,m))$ denote the Ramsey number of the double star $S(n,m)$.
In 1979 Grossman, Harary and Klawe have shown that $$r(S(n,m)) = \max\{n+2m+2,2n+2\}$$ for $3 \leq m \leq n\leq \sqrt{2}m$ and $3m \leq n$. They conjectured that equality holds for all $m,n \geq 3$. Using a flag algebra computation, we extend their result showing that $r(S(n,m))\leq n+ 2m + 2$ for $m \leq n \leq 1.699m$. On the other hand, we show that the conjecture fails for $\frac{7}{4}m +o(m)\leq n \leq \frac{105}{41}m-o(m)$. Our examples additionally give a negative answer to a question of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp from 1982.
Partial flag incidence algebras
The $n^{th}$ partial flag incidence algebra of a poset $P$ is the set of functions from $P^n$ to some ring which are zero on non-partial flag vectors. These partial flag incidence algebras for $n>2$ are not commutative, not unitary, and not associative. However, partial flag incidence algebras contain generalized zeta, delta, and Möbius functions which are finer and more delicate invariants than their classical analogues. We also study some generalized characteristic polynomials of posets which are not evaluations of Tutte polynomials and compute them for Boolean lattices. Motivation for this work came from studying the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials where partial flag Whitney numbers play a central role.

We study the algebraic geometry and combinatorics of the central degeneration (the degeneration that shows up in local models of Shimura varieties and Gaitsgory's central sheaves) in type A. More specifically, we elucidate the central degeneration of semi-infinite orbits and explain its relations with Levi restriction. Also, we discuss the central degeneration of Mirkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$-Vilonen cycles in the affine Grassmannian, and the corresponding transformations of Mirkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$-Vilonen polytopes. In addition, we shed some light on the geometry of Iwahori MV cycles in the affine Grassmannian and generalized MV cycles in the affine flag variety, which are closely related to Demazure modules and affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties respectively.
A Chevalley formula for the equivariant quantum K-theory of cominuscule varieties
We prove a type-uniform Chevalley formula for multiplication with divisor classes in the equivariant quantum $K$-theory ring of any cominuscule flag variety $G/P$. We also prove that multiplication with divisor classes determines the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of arbitrary flag varieties. These results prove a conjecture of Gorbounov and Korff concerning the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of Grassmannians of Lie type A.
