Graph-truncations of $3$-polytopes
In this paper we study the operation of cutting off edges of a simple $3$-polytope $P$ along the graph $Γ$. We give the criterion when the resulting polytope is simple and when it is flag. As a corollary we prove the analog of Eberhard's theorem about the realization of polygon vectors of simple $3$-polytopes for flag polytopes.
Cyclotomic difference sets in finite fields

The classical problem of whether $m$th-powers with or without zero in a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ form a difference set has been extensively studied, and is related to many topics, such as flag transitive finite projective planes. In this paper new necessary and sufficient conditions are established including those via a system of polynomial equations on Gauss sums. The author thereby solves the problem for even $q$ which is neglected in the literature, and extends the nonexistence list for even $m$ up to $22$. Moreover, conjectures toward the complete classification are posed.
Limits, Regularity and Removal for Finite Structures
Our work builds on known results for k-uniform hypergraphs including the existence of limits, a Regularity Lemma and a Removal Lemma. Our main tool here is a theory of measures on ultraproduct spaces which establishes a correspondence between ultraproduct spaces and Euclidean spaces. First we show the existence of a limit object for convergent sequences of relational structures and as a special case, we retrieve the known limits for graphs and digraphs. Then we extend this notion to finite models of a fixed universal theory. We also state and prove a Regularity Lemma and a Removal Lemma. We will discuss connections between our work and Razborov's flag algebras as well.

We prove that each semi-invariant ring of the complete triple flag of length $n$ is an upper cluster algebra associated to an ice hive quiver. We find a rational polyhedral cone ${\sf G}_n$ such that the generic cluster character maps its lattice points onto a basis of the cluster algebra. As an application, we use the cluster algebra structure to find a special minimal set of generators for these semi-invariant rings when $n$ is small.

A parametrization of a positroid variety $Π$ of dimension $d$ is a regular map $(\mathbb{C}^{\times})^{d} \rightarrow Π$ which is birational onto a dense subset of $Π$. There are several remarkable combinatorial constructions which yield parametrizations of positroid varieties. We investigate the relationship between two families of such parametrizations, and prove they are essentially the same. Our first family is defined in terms of Postnikov's boundary measurement map, and the domain of each parametrization is the space of edge weights of a planar network. We focus on a special class of planar networks called bridge graphs, which have applications to particle physics. Our second family arises from Marsh and Rietsch's parametrizations of Deodhar components of the flag variety, which are indexed by certain subexpressions of reduced words. Projecting to the Grassmannian gives a family of parametrizations for each positroid variety. We show that each Deodhar parametrization for a positroid variety corresponds to a bridge graph, while each parametrization from a bridge graph agrees with some projected Deodhar parametrization.
Minimum number of monotone subsequences of length 4 in permutations

We show that for every sufficiently large $n$, the number of monotone subsequences of length four in a permutation on $n$ points is at least $\binom{\lfloor n/3 \rfloor}{4} + \binom{\lfloor(n+1)/3\rfloor}{4} + \binom{\lfloor (n+2)/3\rfloor}{4}$. Furthermore, we characterize all permutations on $[n]$ that attain this lower bound. The proof uses the flag algebra framework together with some additional stability arguments. This problem is equivalent to some specific type of edge colorings of complete graphs with two colors, where the number of monochromatic $K_4$'s is minimized. We show that all the extremal colorings must contain monochromatic $K_4$'s only in one of the two colors. This translates back to permutations, where all the monotone subsequences of length four are all either increasing, or decreasing only.
Combinatorially two-orbit convex polytopes

Any convex polytope whose combinatorial automorphism group has two orbits on the flags is isomorphic to one whose group of Euclidean symmetries has two orbits on the flags (equivalently, to one whose automorphism group and symmetry group coincide.) Hence, a combinatorially two-orbit convex polytope is isomorphic to one of a known finite list, all of which are 3-dimensional: the cuboctahedron, icosidodecahedron, rhombic dodecahedron, or rhombic triacontahedron. The same is true of combinatorially two-orbit normal face-to-face tilings by convex polytopes.
Schubert slices in the combinatorial geometry of flag domains
Flag domains are open orbits of real semisimple Lie groups in flag manifolds of their complexifications. Certain group theoretically defined compact complex submanifolds, which are regarded as cycles, are of basic importance for their complex geometric and representation theoretic properties. It is known that there are optimal Schubert varieties which intersect the cycles transversally in finitely many points and in particular determine them in homology. Here we give a precise description of these Schubert varieties in terms of certain subsets of the Weyl group and compute their total number for all the real forms of SL(n,C). Furthermore, we give an explicit description of the points of intersection in terms of flags and their number.
Marked poset polytopes: Minkowski sums, indecomposables, and unimodular equivalence

We analyze marked poset polytopes and generalize a result due to Hibi and Li, answering whether the marked chain polytope is unimodular equivalent to the marked order polytope. Both polytopes appear naturally in the representation theory of semi-simple Lie algebras, and hence we can give a necessary and sufficient condition on the marked poset such that the associated toric degenerations of the corresponding partial flag variety are isomorphic.
We further show that the set of lattice points in such a marked poset polytope is the Minkowski sum of sets of lattice points for 0-1 polytopes. Moreover, we provide a decomposition of the marked poset into indecomposable marked posets, which respects this Minkowski sum decomposition for the marked chain polytopes polytopes.

This paper introduces a two-parameter deformation of the cohomology of generalized flag varieties. One special case is the Belkale-Kumar deformation (used to study eigencones of Lie groups). Another picks out intersections of Schubert varieties that behave nicely under projections. Our construction yields a new proof that the Belkale-Kumar product is well-defined. This proof is shorter and more elementary than earlier proofs.
Point-primitive generalised hexagons and octagons

In 2008, Schneider and Van Maldeghem proved that if a group acts flag-transitively, point-primitively, and line-primitively on a generalised hexagon or generalised octagon, then it is an almost simple group of Lie type. We show that point-primitivity is sufficient for the same conclusion, regardless of the action on lines or flags. This result narrows the search for generalised hexagons or octagons with point- or line-primitive collineation groups beyond the classical examples, namely the two generalised hexagons and one generalised octagon admitting the Lie type groups $\mathsf{G}_2(q)$, $\,^3\mathsf{D}_4(q)$, and $\,^2\mathsf{F}_4(q)$, respectively.
Crossing numbers of complete tripartite and balanced complete multipartite graphs

The crossing number cr(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of crossings in a nondegenerate planar drawing of G. The rectilinear crossing number cr'(G) of G is the minimum number of crossings in a rectilinear nondegenerate planar drawing (with edges as straight line segments) of G. Zarankiewicz proved in 1952 that cr'(K_{n_1,n_2})\le Z(n_1,n_2):= n_1/2*(n_1-1)/2*n_2/2*(n_2-1)/2. We define an analogous bound A(n_1,n_2,n_3) for the complete tripartite graph K_{n_1,n_2,n_3}, and prove that cr'(K_{n_1,n_2,n_3})\le A({n_1,n_2,n_3}). We also show that for n large enough, 0.973 A(n,n,n) \le cr'(K_{n,n,n}) and 0.666 A(n,n,n)\le cr(K_{n,n,n}), with the tighter rectilinear lower bound established through the use of flag algebras. A complete multipartite graph is balanced if the partite sets all have the same cardinality. We study asymptotic behavior of the crossing number of the balanced complete r-partite graph. Richter and Thomassen proved in 1997 that the limit as n\to\infty of cr(K_{n,n}) over the maximum number of crossings in a drawing of K_{n,n} exists and is at most 1/4. We define z(r)=3(r^2-r)/8(r^2+r-3) and show that for a fixed r and the balanced complete r-partite graph, z(r) is an upper bound to the limit superior of the crossing number divided by the maximum number of crossings in a drawing.
Chains in Weak Order Posets Associated to Involutions

The W-set of an element of a weak order poset is useful in the cohomological study of the closures of spherical subgroups in generalized flag varieties. We explicitly describe in a purely combinatorial manner the W-sets of the weak order posets of three different sets of involutions in the symmetric group, namely, the set of all involutions, the set of all fixed point free involutions, and the set of all involutions with signed fixed points (or "clans"). These distinguished sets of involutions parameterize Borel orbits in the classical symmetric spaces associated to the general linear group. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the maximal chains of an arbitrary lower order ideal in any of these three posets.

In a spirit of Givental's constructions Batyrev, Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim, and van Straten suggested Landau--Ginzburg models for smooth Fano complete intersections in Grassmannians and partial flag varieties as certain complete intersections in complex tori equipped with special functions called superpotentials. We provide a particular algorithm for constructing birational isomorphisms of these models for complete intersections in Grassmannians of planes with complex tori. In this case the superpotentials are given by Laurent polynomials. We study Givental's integrals for Landau--Ginzburg models suggested by Batyrev, Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim, and van Straten and show that they are periods for pencils of fibers of maps provided by Laurent polynomials we obtain. The algorithm we provide after minor modifications can be applied in a more general context.
An affine deformation of the quantum cohomology ring of flag manifolds and periodic Toda lattice

Consider the generalized flag manifold $G/B$ and the corresponding affine flag manifold $\mathcal{Fl}_G$. In this paper we use curve neighborhoods for Schubert varieties in $\mathcal{Fl}_G$ to construct certain affine Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathcal{Fl}_G$, and to obtain a family of "affine quantum Chevalley" operators $Λ_0, \ldots, Λ_n$ indexed by the simple roots in the affine root system of $G$. These operators act on the cohomology ring $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[q_0, \ldots,q_n]$. By analyzing commutativity and invariance properties of these operators we deduce the existence of two quantum cohomology rings, which satisfy properties conjectured earlier by Guest and Otofuji for $G= \mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The first quantum ring is a deformation of the subalgebra of $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ generated by divisors. The second ring, denoted $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$, deforms the ordinary quantum cohomology ring $\mathrm{QH}^*(G/B)$ by adding an affine quantum parameter $q_0$. We prove that $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ is a Frobenius algebra, and that the new quantum product determines a flat Dubrovin connection. Further, we develop an analogue of Givental and Kim formalism for this ring and we deduce a presentation of $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ by generators and relations. The ideal of relations is generated by the integrals of motion for the periodic Toda lattice associated to the dual of the extended Dynkin diagram of $G$.
Partial duality of hypermaps

We introduce partial duality of hypermaps, which include the classical Euler-Poincaré duality as a particular case. Combinatorially, hypermaps may be described in one of three ways: as three involutions on the set of flags (bi-rotation system or $τ$-model), or as three permutations on the set of half-edges (rotation system or $σ$-model in orientable case), or as edge 3-coloured graphs. We express partial duality in each of these models. We give a formula for the genus change under partial duality.

A regular polyhedron of type {p, q} has at least 2pq flags, and it is called tight if it has exactly 2pq flags. The values of p and q for which there exist tight orientably regular polyhedra were previously known. We determine for which values of p and q there is a tight non-orientably regular polyhedron of type {p, q}. Furthermore, we completely classify tight regular polyhedra in terms of their automorphism groups.
Generalizations of the Szemerédi-Trotter Theorem

We generalize the Szemerédi-Trotter incidence theorem, to bound the number of complete \emph{flags} in higher dimensions. Specifically, for each $i=0,1,\ldots,d-1$, we are given a finite set $S_i$ of $i$-flats in $\R^d$ or in $\C^d$, and a (complete) flag is a tuple $(f_0,f_1,\ldots,f_{d-1})$, where $f_i\in S_i$ for each $i$ and $f_i\subset f_{i+1}$ for each $i=0,1,\ldots,d-2$. Our main result is an upper bound on the number of flags which is tight in the worst case.
We also study several other kinds of incidence problems, including (i) incidences between points and lines in $\R^3$ such that among the lines incident to a point, at most $O(1)$ of them can be coplanar, (ii) incidences with Legendrian lines in $\R^3$, a special class of lines that arise when considering flags that are defined in terms of other groups, and (iii) flags in $\R^3$ (involving points, lines, and planes), where no given line can contain too many points or lie on too many planes. The bound that we obtain in (iii) is nearly tight in the worst case.
Finally, we explore a group theoretic interpretation of flags, a generalized version of which leads us to new incidence problems.
Rainbow triangles in three-colored graphs

Erdos and Sos proposed a problem of determining the maximum number F(n) of rainbow triangles in 3-edge-colored complete graphs on n vertices. They conjectured that F(n) = F(a)+ F(b)+F(c)+F(d)+abc+abd+acd+bcd, where a+b+c+d = n and a, b, c, d are as equal as possible. We prove that the conjectured recurrence holds for sufficiently large n. We also prove the conjecture for n = 4k for all k. These results imply that lim F(n) n^3/6 = 0.4, and determine the unique limit object. In the proof we use flag algebras combined with stability arguments.
Cohomological consequences of the pattern map

Billey and Braden defined maps on flag manifolds that are the geometric counterpart of permutation patterns. A section of their pattern map is an embedding of the flag manifold of a Levi subgroup into the full flag manifold. We give two expressions for the induced map on cohomology. One is in terms of generators and the other is in terms of the Schubert basis. We show that the coefficients in the second expression are naturally Schubert structure constants and therefore positive. These formulas also hold for K-theory, and generalize known formulas in type A for cohomology and K-theory.
