We address the equilibrium concept of a reverse auction game so that no one can enhance the individual payoff by a unilateral change when all the others follow a certain strategy. In this approach the combinatorial possibilities to consider become very much involved even for a small number of players, which has hindered a precise analysis in previous works. We here present a systematic way to reach the solution for a general number of players, and show that this game is an example of conflict between the group and the individual interests.

Let $G$ be a group and $X$ be a $G$-space. A subset $F$ of $X$ is called a kaleidoscopical configuration if there exists a surjective coloring $χ:X\to Y$ such that the restriction of $χ$ on each subset $gF$, $g\in G$ is a bijection. We give some constructions of kaleidoscopical configurations in an arbitrary $G$-space, develop some kaleidoscopical technique for Abelian groups (considered as $G$-spaces with the action $(g,x)\mapsto g+x$), and describe kaleidoscopical configurations in the cyclic groups of order $N=p^m$ or $N=p_1... p_k$ where $p$ is prime and $p_1,...,p_k$ are distinct primes.
Let $G$ be a group and $X$ be a $G$-space. A subset $F$ of $X$ is called a kaleidoscopical configuration if there exists a coloring $χ:X\rightarrow C$ such that the restriction of $χ$ on each subset $gF$, $g\in G$, is a bijection. We present a construction (called the splitting construction) of kaleidoscopical configurations in an arbitrary $G$-space, reduce the problem of characterization of kaleidoscopical configurations in a finite Abelian group $G$ to a factorization of $G$ into two subsets, and describe all kaleidoscopical configurations in isometrically homogeneous ultrametric spaces with finite distance scale. Also we construct $2^c$ (unsplittable) kaleidoscopical configurations of cardinality continuum in the Euclidean space $R^n$.

For a given cocharacter mu, mu-admissibility and mu-permissibility are combinatorial notions introduced by Kottwitz and Rapoport that arise in the theory of bad reduction of Shimura varieties. In this paper we prove that mu-admissibility is equivalent to mu-permissibility in all previously unknown cases of minuscule cocharacters mu in Iwahori-Weyl groups attached to split orthogonal groups. This, combined with other cases treated previously by Kottwitz-Rapoport and the author, establishes the equivalence of mu-admissibility and mu-permissibility for all minuscule cocharacters in split classical groups, as conjectured by Rapoport.
Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type - the details
We prove that the generalised non-crossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups of exceptional type obey two different cyclic sieving phenomena, as conjectured by Armstrong, respectively by Bessis and Reiner. This manuscript accompanies the paper "Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type" [arXiv:1001.0028], for which it provides the computational details.

We present the proof of the cyclic sieving conjectures for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups due to Armstrong, respectively to Bessis and Reiner, for the 26 exceptional well-generated complex reflection groups. The computational details are provided in the manuscript "Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type - the details" [arXiv:1001.0030].
Hyperbolic polynomials and the Dirichlet problem
This paper presents a simple, self-contained account of Garding's theory of hyperbolic polynomials, including a recent convexity result of Bauschke-Guler-Lewis-Sendov and an inequality of Gurvits. This account also contains new results, such as the existence of a real analytic arrangement of the eigenvalue functions.
In a second, independent part of the paper, the relationship of Garding's theory to the authors' recent work (arXiv:0710.3991) on the Dirichlet problem for fully nonlinear partial differential equations is investigated. Let p be a homogeneous polynomial of degree m on S^2(R^n) which is hyperbolic with respect to the all positive directions A \geq 0. Then p has an associated eigenvalue map lambda:S^2(R^n) \to R^m, defined modulo the permutation group acting on R^m. Consequently, each closed symmetric set E of R^m induces a second-order p.d.e. by requiring, for a C^2-function u in n-variables, that (D^2 u)(x) lie in the boundary of E for all x. Assume that E + (R_+)^m is contained in E. A main result is that for smooth domains in R^n whose boundary is suitably (p,E)-pseudo-convex, the Dirichlet problem has a unique continuous solution for all continuous boundary data. This applies to a vast collection of examples the most basic of which are the m distinct branches of the equation p(D^2 u) =0.
In the authors' recent extension of results from euclidean domains to domains in riemannian manifolds (arXiv:0907.1981), a new global ingredient, called a monotonicity subequation, was introduced. It is shown in this paper that for every polynomial $p$ as above, the associated Garding cone is a monotonicity cone for all branches of the the equation p(Hess u) = 0 where Hess u denotes the riemannian Hessian of u.
Free Knots and Parity

We consider knot theories possessing a {\em parity}: each crossing is decreed {\em odd} or {\em even} according to some universal rule. If this rule satisfies some simple axioms concerning the behaviour under Reidemeister moves, this leads to a possibility of constructing new invariants and proving minimality and non-triviality theorems for knots from these classes, and constructing maps from knots to knots.
Our main example is virtual knot theory and its simplifaction, {\em free knot theory}. By using Gauss diagrams, we show the existence of non-trivial free knots (counterexample to Turaev's conjecture), and construct simple and deep invariants made out of parity. Some invariants are valued in graph-like objects and some other are valued in groups.
We discuss applications of parity to virtual knots and ways of extending well-known invariants.
The existence of a non-trivial parity for classical knots remains an open problem.
Noncrossing partitions, clusters and the Coxeter plane
When W is a finite Coxeter group of classical type (A, B, or D), noncrossing partitions associated to W and compatibility of almost positive roots in the associated root system are known to be modeled by certain planar diagrams. We show how the classical-type constructions of planar diagrams arise uniformly from projections of small W-orbits to the Coxeter plane. When the construction is applied beyond the classical cases, simple criteria are apparent for noncrossing and for compatibility for W of types H_3 and I_2(m) and less simple criteria can be found for compatibility in types E_6, F_4 and H_4. Our construction also explains why simple combinatorial models are elusive in the larger exceptional types.
Group Marriage Problem

Let $G$ be a permutation group acting on $[n]=\{1, ..., n\}$ and $\mathcal{V}=\{V_{i}: i=1, ..., n\}$ be a system of $n$ subsets of $[n]$. When is there an element $g \in G$ so that $g(i) \in V_{i}$ for each $i \in [n]$? If such $g$ exists, we say that $G$ has a $G$-marriage subject to $\mathcal{V}$. An obvious necessary condition is the {\it orbit condition}: for any $\emptyset \not = Y \subseteq [n]$, $\bigcup_{y \in Y} V_{y} \supseteq Y^{g}=\{g(y): y \in Y \}$ for some $g \in G$. Keevash (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 111(2005), 289--309) observed that the orbit condition is sufficient when $G$ is the symmetric group $\Sym([n])$; this is in fact equivalent to the celebrated Hall's Marriage Theorem. We prove that the orbit condition is sufficient if and only if $G$ is a direct product of symmetric groups. We extend the notion of orbit condition to that of $k$-orbit condition and prove that if $G$ is the alternating group $\Alt([n])$ or the cyclic group $C_{n}$ where $n \ge 4$, then $G$ satisfies the $(n-1)$-orbit condition subject to $\V$ if and only if $G$ has a $G$-marriage subject to $\mathcal{V}$.

Algèbre combinatoire et effective: des graphes aux algèbres de Kac, via l'exploration informatique
This manuscript synthesizes almost fifteen years of research in algebraic combinatorics, in order to highlight, theme by theme, its perspectives.
In part one, building on my thesis work, I use tools from commutative algebra, and in particular from invariant theory, to study isomorphism problems in combinatorics. I first consider algebras of graph invariants in relation with Ulam's reconstruction conjecture, and then, more generally, the age algebras of relational structures. This raises in return structural and algorithmic problems in the invariant theory of permutation groups.
In part two, the leitmotiv is the quest for simple yet rich combinatorial models to describe algebraic structures and their representations. This includes the Hecke group algebras of Coxeter groups which I introduced and which relate to the affine Hecke algebras, but also some finite dimensional Kac algebras in relation with inclusions of factors, and the rational Steenrod algebras. Beside being concrete and constructive, such combinatorial models shed light on certain algebraic phenomena and can lead to elegant and elementary proofs.
My favorite tool is computer exploration, and the algorithmic and effective aspects play a major role in this manuscript. In particular, I describe the international open source project *-Combinat which I founded back in 2000, and whose mission is to provide an extensible toolbox for computer exploration in algebraic combinatorics and to foster code sharing among researchers in this area. I present specific challenges that the development of this project raised, and the original algorithmic, design, and development model solutions I was led to develop.
The biHecke monoid of a finite Coxeter group

The usual combinatorial model for the 0-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group is to consider the algebra (or monoid) generated by the bubble sort operators. This construction generalizes to any finite Coxeter group W. The authors previously introduced the Hecke group algebra, constructed as the algebra generated simultaneously by the bubble sort and antisort operators, and described its representation theory.
In this paper, we consider instead the monoid generated by these operators. We prove that it has |W| simple and projective modules. In order to construct a combinatorial model for the simple modules, we introduce for each w in W a combinatorial module whose support is the interval [1,w] in right weak order. This module yields an algebra, whose representation theory generalizes that of the Hecke group algebra. This involves the introduction of a w-analogue of the combinatorics of descents of W and a generalization to finite Coxeter groups of blocks of permutation matrices.
Congruence B-Orbits and the Bruhat Poset of Involutions of the Symmetric Group
We study the poset of Borel congruence classes of symmetric matrices ordered by containment of closures. We give a combinatorial description of this poset and calculate its rank function. We discuss the relation between this poset and the Bruhat poset of involutions of the symmetric group.
Nonzero coefficients in restrictions and tensor products of supercharacters of $U_n(q)$

The standard supercharacter theory of the finite unipotent upper-triangular matrices $U_n(q)$ gives rise to a beautiful combinatorics based on set partitions. As with the representation theory of the symmetric group, embeddings of $U_m(q)\subseteq U_n(q)$ for $m\leq n$ lead to branching rules. Diaconis and Isaacs established that the restriction of a supercharacter of $U_n(q)$ is a nonnegative integer linear combination of supercharacters of $U_m(q)$ (in fact, it is polynomial in $q$). In a first step towards understanding the combinatorics of coefficients in the branching rules of the supercharacters of $U_n(q)$, this paper characterizes when a given coefficient is nonzero in the restriction of a supercharacter and the tensor product of two supercharacters. These conditions are given uniformly in terms of complete matchings in bipartite graphs.

The recently developed theory of Schur rings over a finite cyclic group is generalized to Schur rings over a ring R being a product of Galois rings of coprime characteristics. It is proved that if the characteristic of R is odd, then as in the cyclic group case any pure Schur ring over R is the tensor product of a pure cyclotomic ring and Schur rings of rank 2 over non-fields. Moreover, it is shown that in contrast to the cyclic group case there are non-pure Schur rings over R that are not generalized wreath products.

We construct (q,t)-Catalan polynomials and q-Fuss-Catalan polynomials for any irreducible complex reflection group W. The two main ingredients in this construction are Rouquier's formulation of shift functors for the rational Cherednik algebras of W, and Opdam's analysis of permutations of the irreducible representations of W arising from the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection.

We study $h$-vectors of simplicial complexes which satisfy Serre's condition ($S_r$). We say that a simplicial complex $Δ$ satisfies Serre's condition ($S_r$) if $\tilde H_i(\lk_Δ(F);K)=0$ for all faces $F \in Δ$ and for all $i < \min \{r-1,\dim \lk_Δ(F)\}$, where $\lk_Δ(F)$ is the link of $Δ$ with respect to $F$ and where $\tilde H_i(Δ;K)$ is the reduced homology groups of $Δ$ over a field $K$. The main result of this paper is that if $Δ$ satisfies Serre's condition ($S_r$) then (i) $h_k(Δ)$ is non-negative for $k =0,1,...,r$ and (ii) $\sum_{k\geq r}h_k(Δ)$ is non-negative.
