On the positive zeros of generalized Narayana polynomials related to the Boros-Moll polynomials
The generalized Narayana polynomials $N_{n,m}(x)$ arose from the study of infinite log-concavity of the Boros-Moll polynomials. The real-rootedness of $N_{n,m}(x)$ had been proved by Chen, Yang and Zhang. They also showed that when $n\geq m+2$, each of the generalized Narayana polynomials has one and only one positive zero and $m$ negative zeros, where the negative zeros of $N_{n,m}(x)$ and $N_{n+1,m+1}(x)$ have interlacing relations. In this paper, we study the properties of the positive zeros of $N_{n,m}(x)$ for $n\geq m+2$. We first obtain a new recurrence relation for the generalized Narayana polynomials. Based on this recurrence relation, we prove upper and lower bounds for the positive zeros of $N_{n,m}(x)$. Moreover, the monotonicity of the positive zeros of $N_{n,m}(x)$ are also proved by using the new recurrence relation.
Stability of combinatorial polynomials and its applications
The aim of this paper is to make a systematical study on the stability of polynomials in combinatorics.
Applying the characterizations of Borcea and Brändén concerning linear operators preserving stability, we present criteria for real stability and Hurwitz stability. We also give a criterion for Hurwitz stability of the Turán expressions. As applications, we derive some stability results occurred in the literature in a unified manner. In addition, we obtain the Hurwitz stability of Turán expressions for alternating runs polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ and solve a conjecture concerning Hurwitz stability of alternating runs polynomials defined on a dual set of Stirling permutations.
Furthermore, we prove that the Hurwitz stability of any symmetric polynomial implies its semi-$γ$-positivity. We study a class of symmetric polynomials and derive many nice properties including Hurwitz stability, semi-$γ$-positivity, non $γ$-positivity, unimodality, strong $q$-log-convexity, the Jacobi continued fraction expansion and the relation with derivative polynomials. In particular, these properties of the alternating descents polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ can be obtained in a unified approach.
Finally, we use real stability to prove a criterion for zeros interlacing between a polynomial and its reciprocal polynomial, which implies the alternatingly increasing property. This criterion extends a result of Brändén and Solus and unifies such properties for many combinatorial polynomials, including ascent polynomials for $k$-ary words, descent polynomials on signed Stirling permutations and $q$-analog of descent polynomials on colored permutations, and so on. We prove the alternatingly increasing property and zeros interlacing for two kinds of peak polynomials on the dual set of Stirling permutations.
Interlacing Results for Hypergraphs

Hypergraphs are a generalization of graphs in which edges can connect any number of vertices. They allow the modeling of complex networks with higher-order interactions, and their spectral theory studies the qualitative properties that can be inferred from the spectrum, i.e. the multiset of the eigenvalues, of an operator associated to a hypergraph. It is expected that a small perturbation of a hypergraph, such as the removal of a few vertices or edges, does not lead to a major change of the eigenvalues. In particular, it is expected that the eigenvalues of the original hypergraph interlace the eigenvalues of the perturbed hypergraph. Here we work on hypergraphs where, in addition, each vertex--edge incidence is given a real number, and we prove interlacing results for the adjacency matrix, the Kirchoff Laplacian and the normalized Laplacian. Tightness of the inequalities is also shown.

In this paper, we study the Ehrhart polynomial of the dual of the root polytope of type C of dimension $d$, denoted by $C_d^*$. We prove that the roots of the Ehrhart polynomial of $C_d^*$ have the same real part $-1/2$, and we also prove that the Ehrhart polynomials of $C_d^*$ for $d=1,2,\cdots$ has the interlacing property.

We study a sorting procedure (run-sorting) on permutations, where runs are rearranged in lexicographic order. We describe a rather surprising bijection on permutations on length $n$, with the property that it sends the set of peak-values to the set of peak-values after run-sorting. We also prove that the expected number of descents in a permutation $σ\in S_{n}$ after run-sorting is equal to $(n-2)/3$. Moreover, we provide a closed form of the exponential generating function introduced by Nabawanda, Rakotondrajao and Bamunoba in 2020, for the number of run-sorted permutations of $[n]$, ($RSP(n)$) having $k$ runs, which gives a new interpretation to the sequence A124324 in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We show that the descent generating polynomials, $A_{n}(t)$ for $RSP(n)$ are real rooted, and satisfy an interlacing property similar to that satisfied by the Eulerian polynomials.
Finally, we study run-sorted binary words and compute the expected number of descents after run-sorting a binary word of length $n$.

Polynomials which afford nonnegative, real-rooted symmetric decompositions have been investigated recently in algebraic, enumerative and geometric combinatorics. Brändén and Solus have given sufficient conditions under which the image of a polynomial under a certain operator associated to barycentric subdivision has such a decomposition. This paper gives a new proof of their result which generalizes to subdivision operators in the setting of uniform triangulations of simplicial complexes, introduced by the first named author. Sufficient conditions under which these decompositions are also interlacing are described. Applications yield new classes of polynomials in geometric combinatorics which afford nonnegative, real-rooted symmetric decompositions. Some interesting questions in $f$-vector theory arise from this work.

Let $n \geq 4$. The helm graph $H_n$ on $2n-1$ vertices is obtained from the wheel graph $W_n$ by adjoining a pendant edge to each vertex of the outer cycle of $W_n$. Suppose $n$ is even. Let $D := [d_{ij}]$ be the distance matrix of $H_n$. In this paper, we first show that $\det(D) = 3(n-1)2^{n-1}.$ Next, we find a matrix $Ł$ and a vector $u$ such that \[D^{-1} = -\frac{1}{2}Ł+\frac{4}{3(n-1)}uu'.\] We also prove an interlacing property between the eigenvalues of $Ł$ and $D$.

We study the distribution and the popularity of some patterns in $k$-ary faro words, i.e. words over the alphabet $\{1, 2, \ldots, k\}$ obtained by interlacing the letters of two nondecreasing words of lengths differing by at most one. We present a bijection between these words and dispersed Dyck paths (i.e. Motzkin paths with all level steps on the $x$-axis) with a given number of peaks. We show how the bijection maps statistics of consecutive patterns of faro words into linear combinations of other pattern statistics on paths. Then, we deduce enumerative results by providing multivariate generating functions for the distribution and the popularity of patterns of length at most three. Finally, we consider some interesting subclasses of faro words that are permutations, involutions, derangements, or subexcedent words.

We propose the notion of normalized Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ for a gain graphs and study its properties in detail, providing insights and counterexamples along the way. We establish bounds for the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ and characterize the classes of graphs for which equality holds. The relationships between the balancedness, bipartiteness, and their connection to the spectrum of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ are also studied. Besides, we extend the edge version of eigenvalue interlacing for the gain graphs. Thereupon, we determine the coefficients for the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$.
Spectral Fundamentals and Characterizations of Signed Directed Graphs

The spectral properties of signed directed graphs, which may be naturally obtained by assigning a sign to each edge of a directed graph, have received substantially less attention than those of their undirected and/or unsigned counterparts. To represent such signed directed graphs, we use a striking equivalence to $\mathbb{T}_6$-gain graphs to formulate a Hermitian adjacency matrix, whose entries are the unit Eisenstein integers $\exp(kπi/3),$ $k\in \mathbb{Z}_6.$ Many well-known results, such as (gain) switching and eigenvalue interlacing, naturally carry over to this paradigm. We show that non-empty signed directed graphs whose spectra occur uniquely, up to isomorphism, do not exist, but we provide several infinite families whose spectra occur uniquely up to switching equivalence. Intermediate results include a classification of all signed digraphs with rank $2,3$, and a deep discussion of signed digraphs with extremely few (1 or 2) non-negative (eq. non-positive) eigenvalues.
A look at generalized perfect shuffles

Standard perfect shuffles involve splitting a deck of $2n$ cards into two stacks and interlacing the cards from the stacks. There are two ways that this interlacing can be done, commonly referred to as an in shuffle and an out shuffle, respectively. In 1983, Diaconis, Graham, and Kantor determined the permutation group generated by in and out shuffles on a deck of $2n$ cards for all $n$. Diaconis et al. concluded their work by asking whether similar results can be found for so-called generalized perfect shuffles. For these new shuffles, we split a deck of $mn$ cards into $m$ stacks and similarly interlace the cards with an in $m$-shuffle or out $m$-shuffle (denoted $I_m$ and $O_m$, respectively). In this paper, we find the structure of the group generated by these two shuffles for a deck of $m^k$ cards, together with $m^y$-shuffles, for all possible values of $m$, $k$, and $y$. The group structure is completely determined by $k/\gcd(y,k)$ and the parity of $y/\gcd(y,k)$. In particular, the group structure is independent of the value of $m$.

Let alpha = (a,b,...) be a composition. Consider the associated poset F(alpha), called a fence, whose covering relations are x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_{a+1} > x_{a+2} > ... > x_{a+b+1} < x_{a+b+2} < ... . We study the associated distributive lattice L(alpha) consisting of all lower order ideals of F(alpha). These lattices are important in the theory of cluster algebras and their rank generating functions can be used to define q-analogues of rational numbers. In particular, we make progress on a recent conjecture of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko that L(alpha) is rank unimodal. We show that if one of the parts of alpha is greater than the sum of the others, then the conjecture is true. We conjecture that L(alpha) enjoys the stronger properties of having a nested chain decomposition and having a rank sequence which is either top or bottom interlacing, the latter being a recently defined property of sequences. We verify that these properties hold for compositions with at most three parts and for what we call d-divided posets, generalizing work of Claussen and simplifying a construction of Gansner.

Let $n \geq 4$ be an even integer and $W_n$ be the wheel graph with $n$ vertices. The distance $d_{ij}$ between any two distinct vertices $i$ and $j$ of $W_n$ is the length of the shortest path connecting $i$ and $j$. Let $D$ be the $n \times n$ symmetric matrix with diagonal entries equal to zero and off-diagonal entries equal to $d_{ij}$. In this paper, we find a positive semidefinite matrix $\widetilde{L}$ such that ${\rm rank}(\widetilde{L})=n-1$, all row sums of $\widetilde{L}$ equal to zero and a rank one matrix $ww^T$ such that \[D^{-1}=-\frac{1}{2}\widetilde{L} + \frac{4}{n-1}ww^T. \] An interlacing property between the eigenvalues of $D$ and $\widetilde{L}$ is also proved.
Spectral preorder and perturbations of discrete weighted graphs

In this article, we introduce a geometric and a spectral preorder relation on the class of weighted graphs with a magnetic potential. The first preorder is expressed through the existence of a graph homomorphism respecting the magnetic potential and fulfilling certain inequalities for the weights. The second preorder refers to the spectrum of the associated Laplacian of the magnetic weighted graph. These relations give a quantitative control of the effect of elementary and composite perturbations of the graph (deleting edges, contracting vertices, etc.) on the spectrum of the corresponding Laplacians, generalising interlacing of eigenvalues.
We give several applications of the preorders: we show how to classify graphs according to these preorders and we prove the stability of certain eigenvalues in graphs with a maximal d-clique. Moreover, we show the monotonicity of the eigenvalues when passing to spanning subgraphs and the monotonicity of magnetic Cheeger constants with respect to the geometric preorder. Finally, we prove a refined procedure to detect spectral gaps in the spectrum of an infinite covering graph.

We study rational generating functions of sequences $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ that agree with a polynomial and investigate symmetric decompositions of the numerator polynomial for subsequences $\{a_{rn}\}_{n\geq 0}$. We prove that if the numerator polynomial for $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is of degree $s$ and its coefficients satisfy a set of natural linear inequalities then the symmetric decomposition of the numerator for $\{a_{rn}\}_{n\geq 0}$ is real-rooted whenever $r\geq \max \{s,d+1-s\}$. Moreover, if the numerator polynomial for $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is symmetric then we show that the symmetric decomposition for $\{a_{rn}\}_{n\geq 0}$ is interlacing. We apply our results to Ehrhart series of lattice polytopes. In particular, we obtain that the $h^\ast$-polynomial of every dilation of a $d$-dimensional lattice polytope of degree $s$ has a real-rooted symmetric decomposition whenever the dilation factor $r$ satisfies $r\geq \max \{s,d+1-s\}$. Moreover, if the polytope is Gorenstein then this decomposition is interlacing.

Spin $q$-Whittaker symmetric polynomials labeled by partitions $λ$ were recently introduced by Borodin and Wheeler (arXiv:1701.06292) in the context of integrable $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ vertex models. They are a one-parameter deformation of the $t=0$ Macdonald polynomials. We present a new, more convenient modification of spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials and find two Macdonald type $q$-difference operators acting diagonally in these polynomials with eigenvalues, respectively, $q^{-λ_1}$ and $q^{λ_N}$ (where $λ$ is the polynomial's label). We study probability measures on interlacing arrays based on spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials, and match their observables with known stochastic particle systems such as the $q$-Hahn TASEP.
In a scaling limit as $q\nearrow 1$, spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials turn into a new one-parameter deformation of the $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ Whittaker functions. The rescaled Pieri type rule gives rise to a one-parameter deformation of the quantum Toda Hamiltonian. The deformed Hamiltonian acts diagonally on our new spin Whittaker functions. On the stochastic side, as $q\nearrow 1$ we discover a multilevel extension of the beta polymer model of Barraquand and Corwin (arXiv:1503.04117), and relate it to spin Whittaker functions.

In geometric, algebraic, and topological combinatorics, the unimodality of combinatorial generating polynomials is frequently studied. Unimodality follows when the polynomial is (real) stable, a property often deduced via the theory of interlacing polynomials. Many of the open questions on stability and unimodality of polynomials pertain to the enumeration of faces of cell complexes.
In this paper, we relate the theory of interlacing polynomials to the shellability of cell complexes. We first derive a sufficient condition for stability of the $h$-polynomial of a subdivision of a shellable complex. To apply it, we generalize the notion of reciprocal domains for convex embeddings of polytopes to abstract polytopes and use this generalization to define the family of stable shellings of a polytopal complex. We characterize the stable shellings of cubical and simplicial complexes, and apply this theory to answer a question of Brenti and Welker on barycentric subdivisions for the well-known cubical polytopes. We also give a positive solution to a problem of Mohammadi and Welker on edgewise subdivisions of cell complexes. We end by relating the family of stable line shellings to the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements. We pose related questions, answers to which would resolve some long-standing problems while strengthening ties between the theory of interlacing polynomials and the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements.

For a given graph $\mathcal{G}$ of order $n$ with $m$ edges, and a real symmetric matrix associated to the graph, $M\left(\mathcal{G}\right)\in\mathbb{R}^{n\times n}$, the interlacing graph reduction problem is to find a graph $\mathcal{G}_{r}$ of order $r<n$ such that the eigenvalues of $M\left(\mathcal{G}_{r}\right)$ interlace the eigenvalues of $M\left(\mathcal{G}\right)$. Graph contractions over partitions of the vertices are widely used as a combinatorial graph reduction tool. In this study, we derive a graph reduction interlacing theorem based on subspace mappings and the minmax theory. We then define a class of edge-matching graph contractions and show how two types of edge-matching contractions provide Laplacian and normalized Laplacian interlacing. An $\mathcal{O}\left(mn\right)$ algorithm is provided for finding a normalized Laplacian interlacing contraction and an $\mathcal{O}\left(n^{2}+nm\right)$ algorithm is provided for finding a Laplacian interlacing contraction.
Some observations on the smallest adjacency eigenvalue of a graph
In this paper, we discuss various connections between the smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph and its structure. There are several techniques for obtaining upper bounds on the smallest eigenvalue, and some of them are based on Rayleigh quotients, Cauchy interlacing using induced subgraphs, and Haemers interlacing with vertex partitions and quotient matrices. In this paper, we are interested in obtaining lower bounds for the smallest eigenvalue. Motivated by results on line graphs and generalized line graphs, we show how graph decompositions can be used to obtain such lower bounds.

We apply Cauchy's interlacing theorem to derive some eigenvalue bounds to the chromatic number using the normalized Laplacian matrix, including a combinatorial characterization of when equality occurs. Further, we introduce some new expansion type of parameters which generalize the Cheeger constant of a graph, and relate them to the colourings which meet our eigenvalue bound with equality. Finally, we exhibit a family of examples, which include the graphs that appear in the statement of the Erdős-Faber-Lovász conjecture.
