Hessenberg-Toeplitz Matrix Determinants with Schroder and Fine Number Entries
In this paper, we find determinant formulas of several Hessenberg-Toeplitz matrices whose nonzero entries are derived from the small and large Schroder and Fine number sequences. Algebraic proofs of these results can be given which make use of Trudi's formula and the generating function of the associated sequence of determinants. We also provide direct arguments of our results that utilize various counting techniques, among them sign-changing involutions, on combinatorial structures related to classes of lattice paths enumerated by the Schroder and Fine numbers. As a consequence of our results, we obtain some new formulas for the Schroder and Catalan numbers as well as for some additional sequences from the OEIS in terms of determinants of certain Hessenberg-Toeplitz matrices.

Off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond
Published in Electron. J. Combin.30(2023), no.4, Paper No. 4.20, 30 pp • Search Publication
We introduce a new symmetry class of domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, called the off-diagonal symmetry class, which is motivated by the off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices introduced by Kuperberg in 2002. We use the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths to enumerate our new symmetry class. The number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond can be expressed as a Pfaffian of a matrix whose entries satisfy a nice and simple recurrence relation.

Logarithms of Catalan generating functions: A combinatorial approach
Published in Electron. J. Combin., 31(1): P1.46, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
We analyze the combinatorics behind the operation of taking the logarithm of the generating function $G_k$ for $k^\text{th}$ generalized Catalan numbers. We provide combinatorial interpretations in terms of lattice paths and in terms of tree graphs. Using explicit bijections, we are able to recover known closed expressions for the coefficients of $\log G_k$ by purely combinatorial means of enumeration. The non-algebraic proof easily generalizes to higher powers $\log^a G_k$, $a\geq 2$.

Perfect matching problems in cluster algebras and number theory
This paper is a slightly extended version of the talk I gave at the Open Problems in Algebraic Combinatorics conference at the University of Minnesota in May 2022. We introduce two strict order relations on lattice paths and formulate several open problems. The topic is related to Markov numbers, the Lagrange spectrum, snake graphs and the cluster algebra of the once punctured torus. Our lattice paths are required to proceed by North and East steps and never go over the diagonal. To define the order relations, we first construct a snake graph $\mathcal{G}(ω)$ and a band graph $\overline{\mathcal{G}(ω)}$ for every such lattice path $ω$. The first order relation $<_M$ is given by the number of perfect matchings of the snake graphs. The second order relation $<_L$ is given by the Lagrange number of a quadratic irrational associated to the band graph.

Friendly paths for finite subsets of plane integer lattice. I
For a given finite subset P of points of the lattice Z^2, a friendly path is a monotone (uphill or downhill) lattice path which splits points in half; points lying on the path itself are discarded. The purpose of this paper (and its sequel) is to fully describe all configurations of n points in Z^2 which do not admit a friendly path. We say that such an n-set is inseparable. There are, up to the lattice symmetry, exactly c(n) such sets. If only lattice shifts are counted, there are ĉ(n) of them. Both sequences are new entries into OEIS (A369382 and, respectively, A367783). In particular, n=27 is the first odd numbers with c(n)=1. No example was known so far. This solves problem 11484(b)* posed in American Mathematical Monthly (February 2010). In this paper we also show that inseparable n-set exist for all even numbers n>=12 and almost all odd numbers.

Partial Motzkin paths with air pockets of the first kind avoiding peaks, valleys or double rises
Motzkin paths with air pockets (MAP) of the first kind are defined as a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets. They are lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin made of steps $U=(1,1)$, $D_k=(1,-k)$, $k\geq 1$ and $H=(1,0)$, where two down-steps cannot be consecutive. We enumerate MAP and their prefixes avoiding peaks (resp. valleys, resp. double rise) according to the length, the type of the last step, and the height of its end-point. We express our results using Riordan arrays. Finally, we provide constructive bijections between these paths and restricted Dyck and Motzkin paths.

From dimer models to generalized lattice paths
A recurrence relation of the generating function of the dimer model of Fibonacci type gives a functional relation for formal power series associated to lattice paths such as a Dyck, Motzkin and Schröder path. In this paper, we generalize the correspondence to the case of generalized lattice paths, $k$-Dyck, $k$-Motzkin and $k$-Schröder paths, by modifying the recurrence relation of the dimer model. We introduce five types of generalizations of the dimer model by keeping its combinatorial structures. This allows us to express the generating functions in terms of generalized lattice paths. The weight given to a generalized lattice path involves several statistics such as size, area, peaks and valleys, and heights of horizontal steps. We enumerate the generalized lattice paths by use of the recurrence relations and the Lagrange inversion theorem.

Two kinds of partial Motzkin paths with air pockets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motzkin paths with air pockets (MAP) are defined as a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets by adding some horizontal steps with certain conditions. In this paper, we introduce two generalizations. The first one consists of lattice paths in $\Bbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin made of steps $U=(1,1)$, $D_k=(1,-k)$, $k\geq 1$ and $H=(1,0)$, where two down steps cannot be consecutive, while the second one are lattice paths in $\Bbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin, made of steps $U$, $D_k$ and $H$, where each step $D_k$ and $H$ is necessarily followed by an up step, except for the last step of the path. We provide enumerative results for these paths according to the length, the type of the last step, and the height of its end-point. A similar study is made for these paths read from right to left. As a byproduct, we obtain new classes of paths counted by the Motzkin numbers. Finally, we express our results using Riordan arrays.
Counting tropical curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$: computation & polynomiality properties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Counts of curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ with fixed contact order with the toric boundary and satisfying point conditions can be determined with tropical methods by Mikhalkin. If we require that our curves intersect the zero- and infinity-section only in points of contact order $1$, but allow arbitrary contact order for the zero- and infinity-fiber, the corresponding numbers reveal beautiful structural properties such as piecewise polynomiality, similar to the case of double Hurwitz numbers counting covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with special ramification profiles over zero and infinity by Ardila and Brugallé. This result was obtained using the floor diagram method to count tropical curves. Here, we expand the tropical tools to determine counts of curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. We provide a computational tool (building on Polymake by Gawrilow and Joswig) that determines such numbers of tropical curves for any genus and any contact orders via a straightforward generalization of Mikhalkin's lattice path algorithm. The tool can also be used for other toric surfaces. To enable efficient computations also by hand, we introduce a new counting tool (for the case of rational curves with transverse contacts with the infinity section) which can be seen as a combination of the floor diagram and the lattice path approach: subfloor diagrams. We use both our computational tool and the subfloor diagrams for experiments revealing structural properties of these counts. We obtain first results on the (piecewise) polynomial structure of counts of rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ with arbitrary contact orders on the zero- and infinity-fiber and restricted choices for the contact orders on the zero- and infinity-section.

Universal asymptotic properties of positive functional equations with one catalytic variable
Published • View PublicationBIB
Functional equations with one catalytic appear in several combinatorial applications, most notably in the enumeration of lattice paths and in the enumeration of planar maps. The main purpose of this paper is to show that under certain positivity assumptions the dominant singularity of the solutions have a universal behavior. We have to distinguish between linear catalytic equations, where a dominating square root singularity appears, and non-linear catalytic equations, where we - usually - have a singularity of type 3/2.

Partitions with constrained ranks and lattice paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study partitions whose successive ranks belong to a given set. We enumerate such partitions while keeping track of the number of parts, the largest part, the side of the Durfee square, and the height of the Durfee rectangle. We also obtain a new bijective proof of a result of Andrews and Bressoud that the number of partitions of $N$ with all ranks at least $1-\ell$ equals the number of partitions of $N$ with no parts equal to $\ell+1$, for $\ell\ge0$, which allows us to refine it by the above statistics. Combining Foata's second fundamental transformation for words with Greene and Kleitman's mapping for subsets, interpreted in terms of lattice paths, we obtain enumeration formulas for partitions whose successive ranks satisfy certain constraints, such as being bounded by a constant.
Lattice path bicircular matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids are two well-known classes of transversal matroids. In the seminal work of Bonin and de Mier about structural properties of lattice path matroids, the authors claimed that lattice path matroids significantly differ from bicircular matroids. Recently, it was proved that all cosimple lattice path matroids have positive double circuits, while it was shown that there is a large class of cosimple bicircular matroids with no positive double circuits. These observations support Bonin and de Miers' claim. Finally, Sivaraman and Slilaty suggested studying the intersection of lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids as a possibly interesting research topic. In this work, we exhibit the excluded bicircular matroids for the class of lattice path matroids, and we propose a characterization of the graph family whose bicircular matroids are lattice path matroids. As an application of this characterization, we propose a geometric description of $2$-connected lattice path bicircular matroids.
Oriented cobicircular matroids are $GSP$
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 347, Issue 1, January 2024 • View PublicationBIB
Colourings and flows are well-known dual notions in Graph Theory. In turn, the definition of flows in graphs naturally extends to flows in oriented matroids. So, the colour-flow duality gives a generalization of Hadwiger's conjecture about graph colourings, to a conjecture about coflows of oriented matroids. The first non-trivial case of Hadwiger's conjecture for oriented matroids reads as follows. If $\mathcal{O}$ is an $M(K_4)$-minor free oriented matroid, then $\mathcal{O}$ has a now-where $3$-coflow, i.e., it is $3$-colourable in the sense of Hochstättler-Nešetřil. The class of generalized series parallel ($GSP$) oriented matroids is a class of $3$-colourable oriented matroids with no $M(K_4)$-minor. So far, the only technique towards proving that all orientations of a class $\mathcal{C}$ of $M(K_4)$-minor free matroids are $GSP$ (and thus $3$-colourable), has been to show that every matroid in $\mathcal{C}$ has a positive coline. Towards proving Hadwiger's conjecture for the class of gammoids, Goddyn, Hochstättler, and Neudauer conjectured that every gammoid has a positive coline. In this work we disprove this conjecture by exhibiting an infinite class of strict gammoids that do not have positive colines. We conclude by proposing a simpler technique for showing that certain oriented matroids are $GSP$. In particular, we recover that oriented lattice path matroids are $GSP$, and we show that oriented cobicircular matroids are $GSP$.

Non-intersecting path constructions for TASEP with inhomogeneous rates and the KPZ fixed point
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 402: 285-333 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We consider a discrete-time TASEP, where each particle jumps according to Bernoulli random variables with particle-dependent and time-inhomogeneous parameters. We use the combinatorics of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and certain intertwining relations to express the transition kernel of this interacting particle system in terms of ensembles of weighted, non-intersecting lattice paths and, consequently, as a marginal of a determinantal point process. We next express the joint distribution of the particle positions as a Fredholm determinant, whose correlation kernel is given in terms of a boundary-value problem for a discrete heat equation. The solution to such a problem finally leads us to a representation of the correlation kernel in terms of random walk hitting probabilities, generalising the formulation of Matetski, Quastel and Remenik (Acta Math., 2021) to the case of both particle- and time-inhomogeneous rates. The solution to the boundary value problem in the fully inhomogeneous case appears with a finer structure than in the homogeneous case.

Minimal resolutions of lattice ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
A canonical minimal free resolution of an arbitrary co-artinian lattice ideal over the polynomial ring is constructed over any field whose characteristic is 0 or any but finitely many positive primes. The differential has a closed-form combinatorial description as a sum over lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ of weights that come from sequences of faces in simplicial complexes indexed by lattice points. Over a field of any characteristic, a non-canonical but simpler resolution is constructed by selecting choices of higher-dimensional analogues of spanning trees along lattice paths. These constructions generalize sylvan resolutions for monomial ideals by lifting them equivariantly to lattice modules.

Multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with branched continued fractions for ratios of hypergeometric series
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main objects of the investigation presented in this paper are branched-continued-fraction representations of ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series and type II multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line with respect to linear functionals or measures whose moments are ratios of products of Pochhammer symbols. This is an interesting case study of the recently found connection between multiple orthogonal polynomials and branched continued fractions that gives a clear example of how this connection leads to considerable advances on both topics. We obtain new results about generating polynomials of lattice paths and total positivity of matrices and give new contributions to the general theory of the connection between multiple orthogonal polynomials and branched continued fractions. We construct new branched continued fractions for ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series. We give conditions for positivity of the coefficients of these branched continued fractions and we show that the ratios of products of Pochhammer symbols are generating polynomials of lattice paths for a special case of the same branched continued fractions. We introduce a family of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line associated with those branched continued fractions. We present a formula as terminating hypergeometric series for these polynomials, we study their differential properties, and we explicitly find their recurrence relation coefficients. Finally, we focus the analysis of the multiple orthogonal polynomials to the cases where the corresponding branched-continued-fraction coefficients are all positive. In those cases, the orthogonality conditions can be written using measures on the positive real line involving Meijer G-functions and we obtain results about the location of the zeros and the asymptotic behaviour of the polynomials.

Refined Lattice Path Enumeration and Combinatorial Reciprocity
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications 3 (2023), article 3:1 • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that the set of $m$-Dyck paths with a fixed height and a fixed amount of valleys is counted by the Fuß-Narayana numbers. In this article, we consider the set of $m$-Dyck paths that start with at least $t$ north steps. We give exact formulas for the number of such paths with fixed height, fixed number of returns and (i) fixed number of valleys, (ii) fixed number of valleys with $x$-coordinate divisible by $m$ and (iii) fixed number of valleys with $x$-coordinate not divisible by $m$. The enumeration (ii) combinatorially realizes the $H$-triangle appearing in a recent article of Krattenthaler and the first author (Algebr. Comb. 5, 2022) in the context of certain parabolic noncrossing partitions. Through a transformation formula due to Chapoton, we give an explicit formula for the associated $F$-triangle. We realize this polynomial combinatorially by means of generalized Schröder paths as well as flats in certain hyperplane arrangements. Along the way we exhibit two new combinatorial reciprocity results.

Product of exponentials concentrates around the exponential of the sum

For two matrices $A$ and $B$, and large $n$, we show that most products of $n$ factors of $e^{A/n}$ and $n$ factors of $e^{B/n}$ are close to $e^{A + B}$. This extends the Lie-Trotter formula. The elementary proof is based on the relation between words and lattice paths, asymptotics of binomial coefficients, and matrix inequalities. The result holds for more than two matrices.

A symmetric function lift of torus link homology
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $M$ and $N$ are positive integers and let $k = \gcd(M, N)$, $m = M/k$, and $n=N/k$. We define a symmetric function $L_{M,N}$ as a weighted sum over certain tuples of lattice paths. We show that $L_{M,N}$ satisfies a generalization of Mellit and Hogancamp's recursion for the triply-graded Khovanov--Rozansky homology of the $M,N$-torus link. As a corollary, we obtain the triply-graded Khovanov--Rozansky homology of the $M,N$-torus link as a specialization of $L_{M,N}$. We conjecture that $L_{M,N}$ is equal (up to a constant) to the elliptic Hall algebra operator $\mathbf{Q}_{m,n}$ composed $k$ times and applied to 1.

A subdivision algebra for a product of two simplices via flow polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a lattice path $ν$ from the origin to a point $(a,b)$ using steps $E=(1,0)$ and $N=(0,1)$, we construct an associated flow polytope $\mathcal{F}_{\hat{G}_B(ν)}$ arising from an acyclic graph where bidirectional edges are permitted. We show that the flow polytope $\mathcal{F}_{\hat{G}_B(ν)}$ admits a subdivision dual to a $w$-simplex, where $w$ is the number of valleys in the path $\barν = EνN$. Refinements of this subdivision can be obtained by reductions of a polynomial $P_ν$ in a generalization of Mészáros' subdivision algebra for acyclic root polytopes where negative roots are allowed. Via an integral equivalence between $\mathcal{F}_{\hat{G}_B(ν)}$ and the product of simplices $Δ_a\times Δ_b$, we thereby obtain a subdivision algebra for a product of two simplices. As a special case, we give a reduction order for reducing $P_ν$ that yields the cyclic $ν$-Tamari complex of Ceballos, Padrol, and Sarmiento.
