Pre-Calabi--Yau algebras and homotopy double Poisson gebras
We prove that the notion of a curved pre-Calabi--Yau algebra is equivalent to the notion of a curved homotopy double Poisson gebra, thereby settling the equivalence between the two ways to define derived noncommutative Poisson structures. We actually prove that the respective differential graded Lie algebras controlling both deformation theories are isomorphic. This allows us to apply the recent developments of the properadic calculus in order to establish the homotopical properties of curved pre-Calabi--Yau algebras: infinity-morphisms, homotopy transfer theorem, formality, Koszul hierarchy, and twisting procedure.

Extended Schur's $Q$-functions and the full Kostant--Toda hierarchy on the Lie algebra of type $D$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The full Kostant--Toda hierarchy on a semisimple Lie algebra is a system of Lax equations, in which the flows are determined by the gradients of the Chevalley invariants. This paper is concerned with the full Kostant--Toda hierarchy on the even orthogonal Lie algebra. By using a Pfaffian of the Lax matrix as one of the Chevalley invariants, we construct an explicit form of the flow associated to this invariant. As a main result, we introduce an extension of the Schur's $Q$-functions in the time variables, and use them to give explicit formulas for the polynomial $τ$-functions of the hierarchy.

New approaches to $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ weight system
Published • View PublicationBIB
The present paper has been motivated by an aspiration for understanding the weight system corresponding to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. The straightforward approach to computing the values of a Lie algebra weight system on a general chord diagram amounts to elaborating calculations in the noncommutative universal enveloping algebra, in spite of the fact that the result belongs to the center of the latter. The first approach is based on a suggestion due to M. Kazarian to define an invariant of permutations taking values in the center of the universal enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. The restriction of this invariant to involutions without fixed points (such an involution determines a chord diagram) coincides with the value of the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ -weight system on this chord diagram. We describe the recursion allowing one to compute the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ -invariant of permutations and demonstrate how it works in a number of examples. The second approach is based on the Harish-Chandra isomorphism for the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. This isomorphism identifies the center of the universal enveloping algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ with the ring $Λ^*(N)$ of shifted symmetric polynomials in $N$ variables. The Harish-Chandra projection can be applied separately for each monomial in the defining polynomial of the weight system; as a result, the main body of computations can be done in a commutative algebra, rather than noncommutative one.

$\mathscr{A}=\mathscr{U}$ for cluster algebras from moduli spaces of $G$-local systems
Published in Adv. Math. 431 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
For a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ admitting a non-trivial minuscule representation and a connected marked surface $Σ$ with at least two marked points and no punctures, we prove that the cluster algebra $\mathscr{A}_{\mathfrak{g},Σ}$ associated with the pair $(\mathfrak{g},Σ)$ coincides with the upper cluster algebra $\mathscr{U}_{\mathfrak{g},Σ}$. The proof is based on the fact that the function ring $\mathcal{O}(\mathcal{A}^\times_{G,Σ})$ of the moduli space of decorated twisted $G$-local systems on $Σ$ is generated by matrix coefficients of Wilson lines introduced in [IO20]. As an application, we prove that the Muller-type skein algebras $\mathscr{S}_{\mathfrak{g}, Σ}[\partial^{-1}]$ [Muller,IY23,IY22] for $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2, \mathfrak{sl}_3,$ or $\mathfrak{sp}_4$ are isomorphic to the cluster algebras $\mathscr{A}_{\mathfrak{g}, Σ}$.

Schreier's type formulae and two scales for growth of Lie algebras and groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a free group of rank $n$ and $H\subset G$ its subgroup of finite index. Then $H$ is also a free group and the rank $m$ of $H$ is determined by Schreier's formula $m-1=(n-1)\cdot|G:H|.$ Any subalgebra of a free Lie algebra is also free. But a straightforward analogue of Schreier's formula for free Lie algebras does not exist, because any subalgebra of finite codimension has an infinite number of generators. But the appropriate Schreier's formula for free Lie algebras exists in terms of formal power series. There exists also a version in terms of exponential generating functions. This is a survey on how these formulas are applied to study 1) growth of finitely generated Lie algebras and groups and 2) the codimension growth of varieties of Lie algebras. First, these formulae allow to specify explicit formulas for generating functions of respective types for free solvable (or more generally, polynilpotent) Lie algebras. Second, these explicit formulas for generating functions are used to derive asymptotic for these two types of the growth. These results can be viewed as analogues of the Witt formula for free Lie algebras and groups. In case of Lie algebras, we obtain two scales for respective types of growth. We also shortly mention the situation on growth for other types of linear algebras.

Broken Bracelets and Kostant's Partition Function
Inspired by the work of Amdeberhan, Can, and Moll on broken necklaces, we define a broken bracelet as a linear arrangement of marked and unmarked vertices and introduce a generalization called $n$-stars, which is a collection of $n$ broken bracelets whose final (unmarked) vertices are identified. Through these combinatorial objects, we provide a new framework for the study of Kostant's partition function, which counts the number of ways to express a vector as a nonnegative integer linear combination of the positive roots of a Lie algebra. Our main result establishes that (up to reflection) the number of broken bracelets with a fixed number of unmarked vertices with nonconsecutive marked vertices gives an upper bound for the value of Kostant's partition function for multiples of the highest root of a Lie algebra of type $A$. We connect this work to multiplex juggling sequences, as studied by Benedetti, Hanusa, Harris, Morales, and Simpson, by providing a correspondence to an equivalence relation on $n$-stars.

Perverse sheaves, nilpotent Hessenberg varieties, and the modular law
Published in Pure and Applied Mathematics Quarterly, Vol. 21, Issue 1 (2025), pp. 495-540 • View PublicationBIB
We consider generalizations of the Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone of a simple Lie algebra by replacing the cotangent bundle with certain other vector bundles over the flag variety. We show that the analogue of the Springer sheaf has as direct summands only intersection cohomology sheaves that arise in the Springer correspondence. The fibers of these general maps are nilpotent Hessenberg varieties, and we build on techniques established by De Concini, Lusztig, and Procesi to study their geometry. For example, we show that these fibers have vanishing cohomology in odd degrees. This leads to several implications for the dual picture, where we consider maps that generalize the Grothendieck-Springer resolution of the whole Lie algebra. In particular we are able to prove a conjecture of Brosnan. As we vary the maps, the cohomology of the corresponding nilpotent Hessenberg varieties often satisfy a relation we call the geometric modular law, which also has origins in the work on De Concini, Lusztig, and Procesi. We connect this relation in type $A$ with a combinatorial modular law defined by Guay-Paquet that is satisfied by certain symmetric functions and deduce some consequences of that connection.

A characterization of Kazhdan-Lusztig right cells containing smooth elements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$. Its Weyl group is the symmetric group $S_n$. In this paper, we want to describe some Kazhdan-Lusztig right cells containing smooth elements which parameterize the smooth Schubert varieties. These elements are closely related to the study of associated varieties of highest weight modules of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$. Firstly, we give a complete classification of the KL right cells containing only smooth elements. Then we give a sufficient condition for a KL right cell to contain only non-smooth elements by using invariant subsequences and a sufficient condition for a KL right cell to contain some smooth elements. Finally, we give an efficient algorithm to find out all the smooth elements in a given KL right cell.

Parabolic induction for Springer fibres
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a reductive group satisfying the standard hypotheses, with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. For each nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}_0$ in a Levi subalgebra $\mathfrak{g}_0$ we can consider the induced orbit $\mathcal{O}$ defined by Lusztig and Spaltenstein. We observe that there is a natural closed morphism of relative dimension zero from the Springer fibre over a point of $\mathcal{O}_0$ to the Springer fibre over $\mathcal{O}$, which induces an injection on the level of irreducible components. When $G = \operatorname{GL}_N$ the components of Springer fibres was classified by Spaltenstein using standard tableaux. Our main results explains how the Lusztig--Spaltenstein map of Springer fibres can be described combinatorially, using a new associative composition rule for standard tableaux which we call stacking.

Integral operators on lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
As an abstraction and generalization of the integral operator in analysis, integral operators (known as Rota-Baxter operators of weight zero) on associative algebras and Lie algebras have played an important role in mathematics and physics. This paper initiates the study of integral operators on lattices and the resulting Rota-Baxter lattices (of weight zero). We show that properties of lattices can be characterized in terms of their integral operators. We also display a large number of integral operators on any given lattice and classify the isomorphism classes of integral operators on some common classes of lattices. We further investigate structures on semirings derived from differential and integral operators on lattices.
Growth of structure constants of free Lie algebras relative to Hall bases
Published in Journal of Algebra, 612:281-378, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a priori bounds on the size of the structure constants of the free Lie algebra over a set of indeterminates, relative to its Hall bases. We investigate their asymptotic growth, especially as a function of the length of the involved Lie brackets. First, using the classical recursive decomposition algorithm, we obtain a rough upper bound valid for all Hall bases. We then introduce new notions (which we call alphabetic subsets and relative foldings) related to structural properties of the Lie brackets created by the algorithm, which allow us to prove a sharp upper bound for the general case. We also prove that the length of the relative folding provides a strictly decreasing indexation of the recursive rewriting algorithm. Moreover, we derive lower bounds on the structure constants proving that they grow at least geometrically in all Hall bases. Second, for the celebrated historical length-compatible Hall bases and the Lyndon basis, we prove tighter sharp upper bounds, which turn out to be geometric in the length of the brackets. Third, we construct two new Hall bases, illustrating two opposite behaviors in the two-indeterminates case. One is designed so that its structure constants have the minimal growth possible, matching exactly the general lower bound, linked with the Fibonacci sequence. The other one is designed so that its structure constants grow super-geometrically. Eventually, we investigate asymmetric growth bounds which isolate the role of one particular indeterminate. Despite the existence of super-geometric Hall bases, we prove that the asymmetric growth with respect to each fixed indeterminate is uniformly at most geometric in all Hall bases.

Fully commutative elements and spherical nilpotent orbits
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let g be a simple Lie algebra, with fixed Borel subalgebra b and with Weyl group W. Expanding on previous work of Fan and Stembridge in the simply laced case, this note aims to study the fully commutative elements of W, and their connections with the spherical nilpotent orbits in g. If g is not of type G_2, it is shown that an element w in W is fully commutative if and only if the subalgebra of b determined by the inversions of w lies in the closure of a spherical nilpotent orbit. A similar characterization is also given for the ad-nilpotent ideals of b, which are parametrized by suitable elements in the affine Weyl group of g thanks to the work of Cellini and Papi.

Partition identities from higher level crystals of $A_1^{(1)}$
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 153 (2025), 1363-1382 • View PublicationBIB
We study perfect crystals for the standard modules of the affine Lie algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ at all levels using the theory of multi-grounded partitions. We prove a family of partition identities which are reminiscent of the Andrews-Gordon identities and companions to the Meurman-Primc identities, but with simple difference conditions involving absolute values.

Towards a Combinatorial Model for $q$-weight Multiplicities of Simple Lie Algebras (Extended Abstract)
Kostka-Foulkes polynomials are Lusztig's $q$-analogues of weight multiplicities for irreducible representations of semisimple Lie algebras. It has long been known that these polynomials have non-negative coefficients. A statistic on semistandard Young tableaux with partition content, called \textit{charge}, was used to give a combinatorial formula exhibiting this fact in type $A$. Defining a charge statistic beyond type $A$ has been a long-standing problem. Here, we take a completely new approach based on the definition of Kostka-Foulkes polynomials as an alternating sum over Kostant partitions, which can be thought of as formal sums of positive roots. We use a sign-reversing involution to obtain a positive expansion, in which the relevant statistic is simply the number of parts in the Kostant partitions. The hope is that the simplicity of this new crystal-like model will naturally extend to other classical types.
Growth estimates and diameter bounds for untwisted classical groups
Babai's conjecture states that, for any finite simple non-abelian group $G$, the diameter of $G$ is bounded by $(\log|G|)^{C}$ for some absolute constant $C$. We prove that, for any untwisted classical group $G$ of rank $r$ defined over a field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ with $q$ not too small with respect to $r$, \begin{equation*} \mathrm{diam}(G(\mathbb{F}_{q}))\leq(\log|G(\mathbb{F}_{q})|)^{408r^{4}}. \end{equation*} This bound improves on results by Breuillard, Green, and Tao [9], Pyber and Szabó [38], and, for $q$ large enough, also by Halasi, Maróti, Pyber, and Qiao [16]. Our approach is in several ways closer to that of preexistent work by Helfgott [20], in that we give dimensional estimates (that is, bounds of the form $|A\cap V(\mathbb{F}_{q})|\ll|A^{C}|^{\dim(V)/\dim(G)}$, where $A$ is any generating set) for varieties $V$ of specific types, and work in the Lie algebra whenever possible. One of our main tools is a new, more efficient form of escape from subvarieties.

FFLV polytopes for odd symplectic Lie algebras
We consider "odd symplectic Lie algebras" defined in terms of maximal rank skew-symmetric forms. We provide FFLV polytopes for these algebras and prove their standard properties. In particular, we obtain a new graded character formula and PBW bases for an analogue of irreducible representations in terms of lattice points of FFLV polytopes.

On Combinatorial Models for Affine Crystals
The tableau model for Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KR) crystals, which are finite dimensional crystals corresponding to certain affine Lie algebras, is commonly used for its ease of crystal operator calculations. However, its simplicity makes quite complex the calculation of statistics such as: keys (used to express Demazure characters), the crystal energy function (an affine grading on tensor products of KR crystals), and the combinatorial R-matrix (an affine crystal isomorphism permuting factors in a tensor product of KR crystals). It has been shown that these calculations are much simpler with the added structure in the quantum alcove model for KR crystals. In this paper, we give an explicit description of the crystal isomorphism between the mentioned realizations of KR crystals in all classical Lie types.

Crystal Pop-Stack Sorting and Type A Crystal Lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ and a dominant weight $λ$, let $\mathcal B_λ$ be the crystal poset associated to the irreducible representation of $\mathfrak g$ with highest weight $λ$. In the first part of the article, we introduce the \emph{crystal pop-stack sorting operator} $\mathsf{Pop}_{\lozenge}\colon\mathcal B_λ\to\mathcal B_λ$, a noninvertible operator whose definition extends that of the pop-stack sorting map and the recently-introduced Coxeter pop-stack sorting operators. Every forward orbit of $\mathsf{Pop}_{\lozenge}$ contains the minimal element of $\mathcal B_λ$, which is fixed by $\mathsf{Pop}_{\lozenge}$. We prove that the maximum size of a forward orbit of $\mathsf{Pop}_{\lozenge}$ is the Coxeter number of the Weyl group of $\mathfrak g$. In the second part of the article, we characterize exactly when a type $A$ crystal is a lattice.

Gradient flows, adjoint orbits, and the topology of totally nonnegative flag varieties
Published in Comm. Math. Phys. 398 (2023), no. 3, 1213-1289 • View PublicationBIB
One can view a partial flag variety in $\mathbb{C}^n$ as an adjoint orbit $\mathcal{O}_λ$ inside the Lie algebra of $n \times n$ skew-Hermitian matrices. We use the orbit context to study the totally nonnegative part of a partial flag variety from an algebraic, geometric, and dynamical perspective. The paper has three main parts: (1) We introduce the totally nonnegative part of $\mathcal{O}_λ$, and describe it explicitly in several cases. We define a twist map on it, which generalizes (in type $A$) a map of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990) on an isospectral manifold of Jacobi matrices. (2) We study gradient flows on $\mathcal{O}_λ$ which preserve positivity, working in three natural Riemannian metrics. In the Kähler metric, positivity is preserved in many cases of interest, extending results of Galashin, Karp, and Lam (2017, 2019). In the normal metric, positivity is essentially never preserved on a generic orbit. In the induced metric, whether positivity is preserved appears to depends on the spacing of the eigenvalues defining the orbit. (3) We present two applications. First, we discuss the topology of totally nonnegative flag varieties and amplituhedra. Galashin, Karp, and Lam (2017, 2019) showed that the former are homeomorphic to closed balls, and we interpret their argument in the orbit framework. We also show that a new family of amplituhedra, which we call twisted Vandermonde amplituhedra, are homeomorphic to closed balls. Second, we discuss the symmetric Toda flow on $\mathcal{O}_λ$. We show that it preserves positivity, and that on the totally nonnegative part, it is a gradient flow in the Kähler metric up to applying the twist map. This extends a result of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990).

Orbital varieties in types $B$ and $C$
We correct the proof of the main result of an earlier paper, parametrizing orbital varieties in a complex simple Lie algebra of type $B$ or $C$ in terms of domino tableaux and showing how to compute the orbital variety attached to an element of the Weyl group in either of these types.
