Orbital varieties in type $D$
We correct the proof of the main result in an earlier paper, showing how to parametrize orbital varieties in a complex simple Lie algebra of type $D$ in terms of domino tableaux and showing how to compute variety attached to any element of the Weyl group in this type.

Alternating sign matrices and Verma modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the poset of alternating sign matrices, with Bruhat order, is isomorphic to the poset of certain submodules of the dominant Verma module for the special linear Lie algebra $\frak{sl}_n$. The latter poset consists of the intersections of Verma submodules and can also be defined in terms of a Kazhdan-Lusztig cell.
On Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula for $\mathfrak{sp}_6(\mathbb{C})$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over a finite group known as the Weyl group, whose terms involve the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function. The $q$-analog of the partition function is a polynomial-valued function defined by $\wp_q(ξ)=\sum_{i=0}^k c_i q^i$, where $c_i$ is the number of ways the weight $ξ$ can be written as a sum of exactly $i$ positive roots of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The evaluation of the $q$-multiplicity formula at $q = 1$ recovers the multiplicity of a weight in an irreducible highest weight representation of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this paper, we specialize to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}_6(\mathbb{C})$ and we provide a closed formula for the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function, which extends recent results of Shahi, Refaghat, and Marefat. We also describe the supporting sets of the multiplicity formula (known as the Weyl alternation sets of $\mathfrak{sp}_6(\mathbb{C})$), and use these results to provide a closed formula for the $q$-multiplicity for any pair of dominant integral weights of $\mathfrak{sp}_6(\mathbb{C})$. Throughout this work, we provide code to facilitate these computations.

Prime power variations of higher $Lie_n$ modules
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 184C (2021) 105512 • View PublicationBIB
We define, for each subset $S$ of the set $\mathcal{P}$ of primes, an $S_n$-module $Lie_n^S$ with interesting properties. $Lie_n^\emptyset$ is the well-known representation $Lie_n$ of $S_n$ afforded by the free Lie algebra, while $Lie_n^\mathcal{P}$ is the module $C\!onj_n$ of the conjugacy action of $S_n$ on $n$-cycles. For arbitrary $S$ the module $Lie_n^{S}$ interpolates between the representations $Lie_n$ and $C\!onj_n.$ We consider the symmetric and exterior powers of $Lie_n^S.$ These are the analogues of the higher Lie modules of Thrall. We show that the Frobenius characteristic of these higher $Lie_n^S$ modules can be elegantly expressed as a multiplicity-free sum of power sums. In particular this establishes the Schur positivity of new classes of sums of power sums. More generally, for each nonempty subset $T$ of positive integers we define a sequence of symmetric functions $f_n^T$ of homogeneous degree $n.$ We show that the series $\sum_{λ, λ_i\in T} p_λ$ can be expressed as symmetrised powers of the functions $f_n^T$, analogous to the higher Lie modules first defined by Thrall. This in turn allows us to unify previous results on the Schur positivity of multiplicity-free sums of power sums, as well as investigate new ones. We also uncover some curious plethystic relationships between $f_n^T$, the conjugacy action and the Lie representation.

Weak faces of highest weight modules and root systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Chari and Greenstein [Adv. Math. 2009] introduced combinatorial subsets of the roots of a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ which were important in studying Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules over $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{g}})$ and their specializations. Later, Khare [J. Algebra. 2016] studied these subsets for many highest weight $\mathfrak{g}$-modules (in finite type), under the name of weak-$\mathbb{A}$-faces (for a subgroup $\mathbb{A}$ of $(\mathbb{R},+)$), and more generally, $(\{2\};\{1,2\})$-closed subsets. These notions extend and unify the faces of Weyl polytopes as well as the above combinatorial subsets. In this paper, we consider these 'discrete' notions for all Kac-Moody algebras $\mathfrak{g}$, in four distinguished settings: (a) the weights of an arbitrary highest weight $\mathfrak{g}$-module $V$; (b) the convex hull of the weights of $V$; (c) the weights of the adjoint representation; (d) the roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. For (a) (resp., (b)) for all highest weight $\mathfrak{g}$-modules $V$, we show that the weak-$\mathbb{A}$-faces and $(\{2\};\{1,2\})$-closed subsets agree, and equal the sets of weights on exposed faces (resp., equal the exposed faces) of the convex hull of weights conv$_{\mathbb{R}}$ wt $V$. This completes the partial progress of Khare in finite type, and is novel in infinite type. Our proofs are type-free and self-contained. For (c), (d) involving the root system, we similarly achieve complete classifications. For all Kac-Moody $\mathfrak{g}$ - interestingly, other than $\mathfrak{sl}_3, \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_3}$ - we show the weak-$\mathbb{A}$-faces and $(\{2\};\{1,2\})$-closed subsets agree, and equal Weyl group translates of the sets of weights in certain 'standard faces' (which also holds for highest weight modules). This was proved by Chari and her coauthors for root systems in finite type, but is novel for other types.

In this paper we conjecture combinatorial Rogers-Ramanujan type colored partition identities related to standard representations of the affine Lie algebra of type $C^{(1)}_\ell$, $\ell\geq2$, and we conjecture similar colored partition identities with no obvious connection to representation theory of affine Lie algebras.
Equivariant log concavity and representation stability

We expand upon the notion of equivariant log concavity, and make equivariant log concavity conjectures for Orlik--Solomon algebras of matroids, Cordovil algebras of oriented matroids, and Orlik--Terao algebras of hyperplane arrangements. In the case of the Coxeter arrangement for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, we exploit the theory of representation stability to give computer assisted proofs of these conjectures in low degree.

A study on free roots of Borcherds-Kac-Moody Lie Superalgebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a Borcherds-Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra (BKM superalgebra in short) with the associated graph $G$. Any such $\mathfrak g$ is constructed from a free Lie superalgebra by introducing three different sets of relations on the generators: (1) Chevalley relations, (2) Serre relations, and (3) Commutation relations coming from the graph $G$. By Chevalley relations we get a triangular decomposition $\mathfrak g = \mathfrak{ n_+} \oplus \mathfrak h \oplus \mathfrak n_{-}$ and each roots space $\mathfrak{ g_α}$ is either contained in $\mathfrak{n_+}$ or $\mathfrak{ n_{-}}$. In particular, each $\mathfrak{ g_α}$ involves only the relations (2) and (3). In this paper, we are interested in the root spaces of $\mathfrak g$ which are independent of the Serre relations. We call these roots free roots$^{1}$ of $\mathfrak g$. Since these root spaces involve only commutation relations coming from the graph $G$ we can study them combinatorially. We use heaps of pieces to study these roots and prove many combinatorial properties. We construct two different bases for these root spaces of $\mathfrak g$: One by extending the Lalonde's Lyndon heap basis of free partially commutative Lie algebras to the case of free partially commutative Lie superalgebras and the other by extending the basis given in \cite{akv17} for the free root spaces of Borcherds algebras to the case of BKM superalgebras. This is done by studying the combinatorial properties of super Lyndon heaps. We also discuss a few other combinatorial properties of free roots.

On generalized Steinberg theory for type AIII
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 6 (2023), no. 1, 165-195 • View PublicationBIB
Given a symmetric pair $(G,K)=(\mathrm{GL}_{p+q}(\mathbb{C}),\mathrm{GL}_{p}(\mathbb{C})\times \mathrm{GL}_{q}(\mathbb{C}))$ of type AIII, we consider the diagonal action of $K$ on the double flag variety $\mathfrak{X}=\mathrm{Grass}(\mathbb{C}^{p+q},r)\times K/B_K$ whose first factor is a Grassmann variety for $G$ and whose second factor is a full flag variety of $K$. There is a finite number of orbits for this action, and our first result is a description of these orbits: parametrization, dimensions, closure relations, and cover relations. Specifically, the orbits are parametrized by certain pairs of partial permutations. Each orbit in $\mathfrak{X}$ gives rise to a conormal bundle. As in the references [5] and [6], by using the moment map associated to the action, we define a so-called symmetrized Steinberg map, respectively an exotic Steinberg map, which assigns to each such conormal bundle (thus to each orbit) a nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of $K$, respectively in the Cartan complement of that Lie algebra. Our main result is an explicit description of these Steinberg maps in terms of combinatorial algorithms on partial permutations, extending the classical Robinson--Schensted procedure on permutations. This is a thorough generalization of the results in [5], where we supposed $p=q=r$ and considered orbits of special forms.

Multi-grounded partitions and character formulas
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new generalisation of partitions, multi-grounded partitions, related to ground state paths indexed by dominant weights of Lie algebras. We use these to express characters of irreducible highest weight modules of Kac-Moody algebras of affine type as generating functions for multi-grounded partitions. This generalises the approach of our previous paper, where only irreducible highest weight modules with constant ground state paths were considered, to all ground state paths. As an application, we compute the characters of the level $1$ modules of the affine Lie algebras $A_{2n}^{(2)}(n\geq 2)$, $D_{n+1}^{(2)}(n\geq 2)$, $A_{2n-1}^{(1)}(n\geq 3)$, $B_{n}^{(1)}(n\geq 3)$, and $D_{n}^{(1)}(n\geq 4)$.

Values of the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ weight system on complete bipartite graphs
Published in Functional Analysis and Its Applications, 54(3), 208-223 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
A weight system is a function on chord diagrams that satisfies the so-called four-term relations. Vassiliev's theory of finite-order knot invariants describes these invariants in terms of weight systems. In particular, there is a weight system corresponding to the colored Jones polynomial. This weight system can be easily defined in terms of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$, but this definition is too cumbersome from the computational point of view, so that the values of this weight system are known only for some limited classes of chord diagrams. In the present paper we give a formula for the values of the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ weight system for a class of chord diagrams whose intersection graphs are complete bipartite graphs with no more than three vertices in one of the parts. Our main computational tool is the Chmutov--Varchenko reccurence relation. Furthermore, complete bipartite graphs with no more than three vertices in one of the parts generate Hopf subalgebras of the Hopf algebra of graphs, and we deduce formulas for the projection onto the subspace of primitive elements along the subspace of decomposable elements in these subalgebras. We compute the values of the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ weight system for the projections of chord diagrams with such intersection graphs. Our results confirm certain conjectures due to S.K.Lando on the values of the weight system $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at the projections of chord diagrams on the space of primitive elements.

On values of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ weight system on chord diagrams whose intersection graph is complete bipartite

Each knot invariant can be extended to singular knots according to the skein rule. A Vassiliev invariant of order at most $n$ is defined as a knot invariant that vanishes identically on knots with more than $n$ double points. A chord diagram encodes the order of double points along a singular knot. A Vassiliev invariant of order $n$ gives rise to a function on chord diagrams with $n$ chords. Such a function should satisfy some conditions in order to come from a Vassiliev invariant. A weight system is a function on chord diagrams that satisfies so-called 4-term relations. Given a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ equipped with a non-degenerate invariant bilinear form, one can construct a weight system with values in the center of the universal enveloping algebra $U(\mathfrak{g})$. In this paper, we calculate $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ weight system for chord diagram whose intersection graph is complete bipartite graph $K_{2,n}$.

A transitivity result for ad-nilpotent ideals in type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper considers subspaces of the strictly upper triangular matrices, which are stable under Lie bracket with any upper triangular matrix. These subspaces are called ad-nilpotent ideals and there are Catalan number of such subspaces. Each ad-nilpotent ideal meets a unique largest nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of all matrices. The main result of the paper is that under an equivalence relation on ad-nilpotent ideals studied by Mizuno and others, the equivalence classes are the ad-nilpotent ideals with the same largest nilpotent orbit. We include two applications of the result, one to the higher vanishing of cohomology groups of vector bundles on the flag variety and another to the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of the symmetric group. Finally, some combinatorial results are discussed.

Classifications of $Γ$-colored minuscule posets and $P$-minuscule Kac--Moody representations
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics 81(3) (2021), 412--446 • Search Publication
The $Γ$-colored $d$-complete and $Γ$-colored minuscule posets unify and generalize multiple classes of colored posets introduced by R.A. Proctor, J.R. Stembridge, and R.M. Green. In previous work, we showed that $Γ$-colored minuscule posets are necessary and sufficient to build from colored posets certain representations of Kac--Moody algebras that generalize minuscule representations of semisimple Lie algebras. In this paper we classify $Γ$-colored minuscule posets, which also classifies the corresponding representations. We show that $Γ$-colored minuscule posets are precisely disjoint unions of colored minuscule posets of Proctor and connected full heaps of Green. Connected finite $Γ$-colored minuscule posets can be realized as certain posets of coroots in the corresponding finite Lie type.

Gelfand--Tsetlin-type weight bases for all special linear Lie algebra representations corresponding to skew Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the famous weight basis constructions of the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ obtained by Gelfand and Tsetlin in 1950. Using combinatorial methods, we construct one such basis for each finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ associated to a given skew Schur function. Our constructions use diamond-colored distributive lattices of skew-shaped semistandard tableaux that generalize some classical Gelfand--Tsetlin (GT) lattices. Our constructions take place within the context of a certain programmatic study of poset models for semisimple Lie algebra representations and Weyl group symmetric functions undertaken by the first-named author and others. Some key aspects of the methodology of that program are recapitulated here. Combinatorial and representation-theoretic applications of our constructions are pursued here and elsewhere.
Symmetric Fibonaccian distributive lattices and representations of the special linear Lie algebras
Published in Involve 16 (2023) 201-226 • View PublicationBIB
We present a family of rank symmetric diamond-colored distributive lattices that are naturally related to the Fibonacci sequence and certain of its generalizations. These lattices re-interpret and unify descriptions of some un- or differently-colored lattices found variously in the literature. We demonstrate that our symmetric Fibonaccian lattices naturally realize certain (often reducible) representations of the special linear Lie algebras, with weight basis vectors realized as lattice elements and Lie algebra generators acting along the covering digraph edges of each lattice. We present evidence that each such weight basis possesses certain distinctive extremal properties. We provide new descriptions of the lattice cardinalities and rank generating functions and offer several conjectures/open problems. Throughout, we make connections with integer sequences from the OEIS.
Sign-alternating Gibonacci polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider various properties and manifestations of some sign-alternating univariate polynomials borne of right-triangular integer arrays related to certain generalizations of the Fibonacci sequence. Using a theory of the root geometry of polynomial sequences developed by J. L. Gross, T. Mansour, T. W. Tucker, and D. G. L. Wang, we show that the roots of these `sign-alternating Gibonacci polynomials' are real and distinct, and we obtain explicit bounds on these roots. We also derive Binet-type closed expressions for the polynomials. Some of these results are applied to resolve finiteness questions pertaining to a one-player combinatorial game (or puzzle) modelled after a well-known puzzle we call the `Networked-numbers Game.' Elsewhere, the first- and second-named authors, in collaboration with A. Nance, have found rank symmetric `diamond-colored' distributive lattices naturally related to certain representations of the special linear Lie algebras. Those lattice cardinalities can be computed using sign-alternating Fibonacci polynomials, and the lattice rank generating functions correspond to the rows of some new and easily defined triangular integer arrays. Here, we present Gibonaccian, and in particular Lucasian, versions of those symmetric Fibonaccian lattices/results, but without the algebraic context of the latter.

The holonomy Lie algebra of a matroid
We will start from the beginning and define a matroid and its Orlik-Solomon algebra and holonomy Lie algebra, but first we give some background from topology and cohomology. A (central) hyperplane arrangement is a finite number of subspaces of codimension one in a finite dimensional vector space over R, C or even finite fields. The space X which is the complement of the union of the hyperplanes has interesting properties. If you consider R^n the cohomology is however rather trivial, there is just an H^0, since X is a disjoint union of contractible sets. But it is not a trivial task to compute |H^0|. The way to do it is to consider the intersection lattice of the hyperplanes and compute its Möbius function. The result is that the number of components is the sum of the absolut values of the Möbius function (Zaslavsky 1975).

Gaudin Algebras, RSK and Calogero-Moser Cells in Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the spectrum of a family of algebras, the inhomogeneous Gaudin algebras, acting on the $n$-fold tensor representation $\mathbb{C}[x_1, \ldots, x_r]^{\otimes n}$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_r$. We use the work of Halacheva-Kamnitzer-Rybnikov-Weekes to demonstrate that the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence describes the behaviour of the spectrum as we move along special paths in the family. We apply the work of Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko, which proves that the rational Calogero-Moser phase space can be realised as a part of this spectrum, to relate this to behaviour at $t=0$ of rational Cherednik algebras of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. As a result, we confirm for symmetric groups a conjecture of Bonnafé-Rouquier which proposes an equality between the Calogero-Moser cells they defined and the well-known Kazhdan-Lusztig cells.

Moving between weights of weight modules
In Lie theory the partial sum property (PSP) says that for a root system in any Kac-Moody algebra, every positive root is an ordered sum of simple roots whose partial sums are all roots. In this paper, we present two generalizations: 1) "Parabolic generalization": if $I$ is a subset of simple roots, every root with positive $I$-height is an ordered sum of roots of $I$-height 1, whose partial sums are all roots. In fact we show this on the Lie algebra level, by showing that every root space is spanned by the Lie words formed from root vectors of $I$-height 1. As an application, we provide a "minimal" description for the set of weights of every (non-integrable) simple highest weight module over any Kac-Moody algebra. This seems to be novel even in finite type. 2) Generalization to weights of weight modules: the PSP gives a chain of roots between 0 (fixed) and any positive root. We generalize this to the weights of weight modules to get a chain of weights between any two comparable weights. This was shown by S. Kumar for any finite-dimensional simple module over a semisimple Lie algebra. In this paper, we extend this result to (i) a large class of highest weight modules over any Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, which includes all simple highest weight modules over $\mathfrak{g}$; (ii) more generally, for non-highest weight modules such as $\mathfrak{g}$ itself (adjoint representation) and arbitrary submodules of parabolic Verma modules over $\mathfrak{g}$; (iii) arbitrary integrable modules over semisimple $\mathfrak{g}$. Additionally, we also prove the "parabolic" generalizations of this second generalization to the best possible extent. We also find all the highest weight modules which have their sets of weights same as those of parabolic Verma modules and provide a Minkowski difference formula for weights of arbitrary highest weight modules over Kac-Moody $\mathfrak{g}$.
