Characteristic polynomials of semimatroids and their connections to matroids, hyperplane arrangements and graph colorings
We primarily investigate the properties of characteristic polynomials of semimatroids. In particular, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients, generalizing the Whitney's Broken Circuit Theorem. We also prove that the unsigned coefficients of the characteristic polynomial form a unimodal and log-concave sequence, extending the Rota-Heron-Welsh Conjecture to semimatroids. Furthermore, we present convolution identities for the multiplicative characteristic and Tutte polynomials of semimatroids using the Möbius conjugation. Finally, motivated by Kochol's work, we introduce assigning matroids to establish connections among semimatroids, hyperplane arrangements, and graph colorings, with a particular focus on their characteristic polynomials.

A construction that preserves the configuration of a matroid, with applications to lattice path matroids
The configuration of a matroid $M$ is the abstract lattice of cyclic flats (flats that are unions of circuits) where we record the size and rank of each cyclic flat, but not the set. One can compute the Tutte polynomial of $M$, and stronger invariants (notably, the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant), from the configuration. Given a matroid $M$ in which certain pairs of cyclic flats are non-modular, we show how to produce a matroid that is not isomorphic to $M$ but has the same configuration as $M$. We show that this construction applies to a lattice path matroid if and only if it is not a fundamental transversal matroid, and we enumerate the connected lattice path matroids on $[n]$ that are fundamental; these results imply that, asymptotically, almost no lattice path matroids are Tutte unique. We give a sufficient condition for a matroid to be determined, up to isomorphism, by its configuration. We treat constructions that yield matroids with different configurations where each matroid is determined by its configuration and all have the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. We also show that for any lattice $L$ other than a chain, there are non-isomorphic transversal matroids that have the same configuration and where the lattices of cyclic flats are isomorphic to $L$.
The Erdős-Pósa property for circle graphs as vertex-minors
We prove that for any circle graph $H$ with at least one edge and for any positive integer $k$, there exists an integer $t=t(k,H)$ so that every graph $G$ either has a vertex-minor isomorphic to the disjoint union of $k$ copies of $H$, or has a $t$-perturbation with no vertex-minor isomorphic to $H$. Using the same techniques, we also prove that for any planar multigraph $H$, every binary matroid either has a minor isomorphic to the cycle matroid of $kH$, or is a low-rank perturbation of a binary matroid with no minor isomorphic to the cycle matroid of $H$.

Cell structure of bipartite mediangle graphs
Genevois introduced and investigated mediangle graphs as a common generalization of median graphs (1-sekeleta of CAT(0) cube complexes) and Coxeter graphs (Cayley graphs of Coxeter systems) and studied groups acting on them. He asked if mediangle graphs can be endowed with the structure of a contractible cell complex. We answer this in the affirmative by proving that bipartite mediangle graphs are tope graphs of finitary Complexes of Oriented Matroids (COMs). We also show that the oriented matroids (OMs) constituting the cells of COMs arising from bipartite mediangle graphs are exactly the simplicial OMs.

Ordinary and symbolic powers of matroids via polarization
In this paper, we propose a uniform approach to tackle problems about squarefree monomial ideals whose powers have good properties. We employ this approach to achieve a twofold goal: (i) recover and extend several well--known results in the literature, especially regarding Stanley--Reisner ideals of matroids, and (ii) provide short, elementary proofs for these results. Among them, we provide simple proofs of two celebrated results of Minh and Trung, Varbaro, and Terai and Trung elegantly characterizing the Cohen-Macaulay property, or even Serre's condition $(S_2)$, of symbolic and ordinary powers of squarefree monomial ideals in terms of their combinatorial (matroidal) structure. Our work relies on the interplay of several combinatorial and algebraic concepts, including dualities, polarizations, Serre's conditions, matroids, Hochster-Huneke graphs, vertex decomposability, and careful choices of monomial orders.
Exploring the Varchenko Determinant of Partial Cubes
The Varchenko matrix is known to have a well-structured determinant for complexes of oriented matroids (COMs). COMs can be characterized as partial cubes that do not have certain forbidden pc-minors. In this work, we generalize the Varchenko matrix and its determinant to partial cubes. We identify examples of partial cubes whose Varchenko determinants lack a clean factorization, as well as those that exhibit such a structure. These findings open the door for further research into the properties and potential characterizations of partial cubes with well-behaved Varchenko determinants.

Tropical Fermat-Weber Points over Spaces of $M$-Ultrametrics
We extend reconstruction methods for phylogenetic trees to ultrametrics of arbitrary matroids and study the stability of these data analysis methods in the combinatorial spirit of Andreas Dress. In particular, we generalize Atteson's work on the safety radius of phylogenetic reconstruction methods, as well as Gascuel and Steel's work on the stochastic safety radius, to arbitrary matroids. We also show that although the tropical Fermat-Weber points of an $M$-ultrametric sample are generally not contained in the space of $M$-ultrametrics, the intersection between the Fermat-Weber set and the space of $M$-ultrametrics is non-empty.

Generalized break divisors and triangulations of Lawrence polytopes
Let $G$ be a connected graph of genus $g$. The Picard group of degree $g$, $\text{Pic}^g(G)$, is the set of equivalence classes of divisors on $G$ of degree $g$, where two divisors are equivalent if one can be reached from the other through a sequence of chip-firing moves. We construct sets of representatives of the equivalence classes in $\text{Pic}^g(G)$ by defining a function $I_G$ on the spanning trees of $G$ from a triangulation of the Lawrence polytope of the cographic matroid $\mathcal{M}^\ast(G)$. Additionally, such sets of representatives correspond to stability conditions on the nodal curve dual to the graph $G$. We show that $I_G$ that are constructed from regular triangulations of Lawrence polytope correspond to classical stability conditions, which are induced by generic real-valued divisors on $G$.

The polytope of all $q$-rank functions
A $q$-rank function is a real-valued function defined on the subspace lattice that is non-negative, upper bounded by the dimension function, non-drecreasing, and satisfies the submodularity law. Each such function corresponds to the rank function of a $q$-polymatroid. In this paper, we identify these functions with points in a polytope. We show that this polytope contains no interior lattice points, implying that the points corresponding to $q$-matroids are among its vertices. We investigate several properties of convex combinations of two lattice points in this polytope, particularly in terms of independence, flats, and cyclic flats. Special attention is given to the convex combinations of paving and uniform $q$-matroids.

Fundamental Notions of Projective and Scale-Translation-Invariant Metrics in Coding Theory
Projective metrics on vector spaces over finite fields, introduced by Gabidulin and Simonis in 1997, generalize classical metrics in coding theory like the Hamming metric, rank metric, and combinatorial metrics. While these specific metrics have been thoroughly investigated, the overarching theory of projective metrics has remained underdeveloped since their introduction. In this paper, we present and develop the foundational theory of projective metrics, establishing several elementary key results on their characterizing properties, equivalence classes, isometries, constructions, connections with the Hamming metric, associated matroids, sphere sizes and Singleton-like bounds. Furthermore, some general aspects of scale-translation-invariant metrics are examined, with particular focus on their embeddings into larger projective metric spaces.

The Arboricity Polynomial
We introduce a new matroid (graph) invariant, the arboricity polynomial. Given a matroid, the arboricity polynomial enumerates the number of covers of the ground set by disjoint independent sets. We establish the polynomiality of the counting function as a special case of a scheduling polynomial, i.e. both in terms of quasisymmetric functions and via Ehrhart theory of the normal fan of the matroid base polytope. We show basic properties of the polynomial and demonstrate that it is not a Tutte invariant. Namely, the arboricity polynomial does not satisfy a contraction / deletion recursion.

Going deep and going wide: Counting logic and homomorphism indistinguishability over graphs of bounded treedepth and treewidth
We study the expressive power of first-order logic with counting quantifiers, especially the $k$-variable and quantifier-rank-$q$ fragment $\mathsf{C}^k_q$, using homomorphism indistinguishability. Recently, Dawar, Jakl, and Reggio (2021) proved that two graphs satisfy the same $\mathsf{C}^k_q$-sentences iff they are homomorphism indistinguishable over the class $\mathcal{T}^k_q$ of graphs admitting a $k$-pebble forest cover of depth $q$. After reproving this result using elementary means, we provide a graph-theoretic analysis of $\mathcal{T}^k_q$. This allows us to separate $\mathcal{T}^k_q$ from the intersection $\mathcal{TW}_{k-1} \cap \mathcal{TD}_q$, provided that $q$ is sufficiently larger than $k$. Here $\mathcal{TW}_{k-1}$ is the class of all graphs of treewidth at most $k-1$ and $\mathcal{TD}_q$ is the class of all graphs of treedepth at most $q$. We are able to lift this separation to a separation of the respective homomorphism indistinguishability relations $\equiv_{\mathcal{T}^k_q}$ and $\equiv_{\mathcal{TW}_{k-1} \cap \mathcal{TD}_q}$. We do this by showing that the classes $\mathcal{TD}_q$ and $\mathcal{T}^k_q$ are homomorphism distinguishing closed, as conjectured by Roberson (2022). In order to prove Roberson's conjecture for $\mathcal{T}^k_q$, we characterise $\mathcal{T}^k_q$ in terms of a monotone Cops-and-Robber game. The crux is to prove that if Cop has a winning strategy then Cop also has a winning strategy that is monotone. To that end, we transform Cops' winning strategy into a pree-tree-decomposition, which is inspired by decompositions of matroids, and then apply an intricate breadth-first cleaning up procedure along the pree-tree-decomposition (which may temporarily lose the property of representing a strategy). Thereby, we achieve monotonicity while controlling the number of rounds across all branches of the decomposition via a vertex exchange argument.
Girth in $GF(q)$-representable matroids
We prove a conjecture of Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle that for any finite field $GF(q)$ and any integer $t$, every cosimple $GF(q)$-representable matroid with sufficiently large girth contains either $M(K_t)$ or $M(K_t)^*$ as a minor.

$k$-Homogeneous Equiangular Tight Frames
We consider geometric and combinatorial characterizations of equiangular tight frames (ETFs), with the former concerning homogeneity of the vector and line symmetry groups and the latter the matroid structure. We introduce the concept of the bender of a frame, which is the collection of short circuits, which in turn are the dependent subsets of frame vectors of minimum size. We also show that ETFs with $k$-homogeneous line symmetry groups have benders which are $k$-designs. Paley ETFs are a known class of ETFs constructed using number theory. We determine the line and vector symmetry groups of all Paley ETFs and show that they are $2$-homogeneous. We additionally characterize all $k$-homogeneous ETFs for $k\geq 3$. Finally, we revisit David Larson's AMS Memoirs \emph{Frames, Bases, and Group Representations} coauthored with Deguang Han and \emph{Wandering Vectors for Unitary Systems and Orthogonal Wavelets} coauthored with Xingde Dai with a modern eye and focus on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.
Trapezodial property of the generalized Alexander polynomial
Fox's conjecture from 1962, that the absolute values of the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial of an alternating link are trapezoidal, has remained stubbornly open to this date. Recently Fox's conjecture was settled for all special alternating links. In this paper we take a broad view of the Alexander polynomials of special alternating links, showing that they are a generating function for a statistic on certain vector configurations. We study three types of vector configurations: (1) vectors arising from cographic matroids, (2) vectors arising from graphic matroids, (3) vectors arising from totally positive matrices. We prove that Alexander polynomials of special alternating links belong to both classes (1) and (2), and prove log-concavity, respectively trapezoidal, properties for classes (2) and (3). As a special case of our results, we obtain a new proof of Fox's conjecture for special alternating links.

The $\mathbb{S}_n$-equivariant Chow polynomial of the Braid matroid
We determine the generating function for the $\mathbb{S}_n$-equivariant Chow polynomials of the braid matroid $B_n$, using a modular interpretation of this polynomial recently given by Devkota, Robotis, and Zahariuc. We also give a new modular interpretation of the numerical Chow polynomial of $B_n$ in terms of a certain moduli space of genus-zero relative stable maps to $\mathbb{P}^1$.

Complementary vectors of simplicial complexes
We classify the complementary vectors of doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes. This proves a conjecture of Swartz, negatively answers a question of Athanasiadis and Tzanaki, and gives new bounds on the number of independent sets in a matroid. Our technique works more generally for certain level quotients of Stanley-Reisner rings, giving new bounds on the face numbers of Buchsbaum* complexes.

Log-concavity of inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of paving matroids
Gao and Xie (2021) conjectured that the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of any matroid is log-concave. Although the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial may not always have only real roots, we conjecture that the Hadamard product of an inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of degree $n$ and $(1+t)^n$ has only real roots. Using interlacing polynomials and multiplier sequences, we confirm this conjecture for paving matroids. This result allows us to confirm the log-concavity conjecture for these matroids by applying Newton's inequalities.

Efficient Algorithms for Maximal Matroid Degenerations and Irreducible Decompositions of Circuit Varieties
Matroid theory provides a unifying framework for studying dependence across combinatorics, geometry, and applications ranging from rigidity to statistics. In this work, we study circuit varieties of matroids, defined by their minimal dependencies, which play a central role in modeling determinantal varieties, rigidity problems, and conditional independence relations. We introduce an efficient computational strategy for decomposing the circuit variety of a given matroid $M$, based on an algorithm that identifies its maximal degenerations. These degenerations correspond to the largest matroids lying below $M$ in the weak order. Our framework yields explicit and computable decompositions of circuit varieties that were previously out of reach for symbolic or numerical algebra systems. We apply our strategy to several classical configurations, including the Vámos matroid, the unique Steiner quadruple system $S(3,4,8)$, projective and affine planes, the dual of the Fano matroid, and the dual of the graphic matroid of $K_{3,3}$. In each case, we successfully compute the minimal irreducible decomposition of their circuit varieties.
Building sets, Chow rings, and their Hilbert series
We establish formulas for the Hilbert series of the Feichtner--Yuzvinsky Chow ring of a polymatroid using arbitrary building sets. For braid matroids and minimal building sets, our results produce new formulas for the Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$ of pointed stable rational curves, and recover several previous results by Keel, Getzler, Manin, and Aluffi--Marcolli--Nascimento. We also use our methods to produce examples of matroids and building sets for which the corresponding Chow ring has Hilbert series with non-log-concave coefficients. This contrasts with the real-rootedness and log-concavity conjectures of Ferroni--Schröter for matroids with maximal building sets, and of Aluffi--Chen--Marcolli for braid matroids with minimal building sets.
