Tetrads of lines spanning PG(7,2)
Published in Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. Simon Stevin Volume 20, Number 4 (2013), 735-752 • View Publication • BIB
Our starting point is a very simple one, namely that of a set L_4 of four mutually skew lines in PG(7,2): Under the natural action of the stabilizer group G(L_4) < GL(8,2) the 255 points of PG(7,2) fall into four orbits omega_1, omega_2, omega_3 omega_4; of respective lengths 12, 54, 108, 81: We show that the 135 points in omega_2 \cup omega_4 are the internal points of a hyperbolic quadric H_7 determined by L_4; and that the 81-set omega_4 (which is shown to have a sextic equation) is an orbit of a normal subgroup G_81 isomorphic to (Z_3)^4 of G(L_4): There are 40 subgroups (isomorphic to (Z_3)^3) of G_81; and each such subgroup H < G_81 gives rise to a decomposition of omega_4 into a triplet of 27-sets. We show in particular that the constituents of precisely 8 of these 40 triplets are Segre varieties S_3(2) in PG(7,2): This ties in with the recent finding that each Segre S = S_3(2) in PG(7,2) determines a distinguished Z_3 subgroup of GL(8,2) which generates two sibling copies S'; S" of S.

Counting maximal antichains and independent sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Answering several questions of Duffus, Frankl and Rödl, we give asymptotics for the logarithms of (i) the number of maximal antichains in the n-dimensional Boolean algebra and (ii) the numbers of maximal independent sets in the covering graph of the n-dimensional hypercube and certain natural subgraphs thereof. The results in (ii) are implied by more general upper bounds on the numbers of maximal independent sets in regular and biregular graphs. We also mention some stronger possibilities involving actual rather than logarithmic asymptotics.

Toward a graph version of Rado's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
An equation is called graph-regular if it always has monochromatic solutions under edge-colorings of the complete graph on the naturals. We present two Rado-like conditions which are respectively necessary and sufficient for an equation to be graph-regular.
Power measures derived from the sequential query process
Published in Mathematical Social Sciences 65, 174-180, 2013 • View Publication • BIB
We study a basic sequential model for the discovery of winning coalitions in a simple game, well known from its use in defining the Shapley-Shubik power index. We derive in a uniform way a family of measures of collective and individual power in simple games, and show that, as for the Shapley-Shubik index, they extend naturally to measures for TU-games. In particular, the individual measures include all weighted semivalues. We single out the simplest measure in our family for more investigation, as it is new to the literature as far as we know. Although it is very different from the Shapley value, it is closely related in several ways, and is the natural analogue of the Shapley value under a nonstandard, but natural, definition of simple game. We illustrate this new measure by calculating its values on some standard examples.

Hard squares on cylinders revisited
We consider the independence complexes of square grids with cylindrical boundary conditions. When one of the dimensions is small we use simple reductions induced by edge removals to show explicit natural homotopy equivalences between those spaces. In the second part we expand the results of Jonsson, who calculated the Euler characteristic of cylinders with odd circumference. We describe a series of results for cylinders of even circumference. Finally we define a completely independent combinatorial model (necklaces) which calculates the generating functions of the Euler characteristic of cylindrical grids. We conjecture that this model has some particularly simple structure.

Compositions of n Satisfying Some Coprimality Conditions
Published • View Publication • BIB
A k-composition of n is a sequence of length k of positive integers summing up to n. In this paper, we investigate the number of k-compositions of n satisfying two natural coprimality conditions. Namely, we first give an exact asymptotic formula for the number of k-compositions having the first summand coprime to the others. Then, we estimate the number of k-compositions whose summands are all pairwise coprime.

Character deflations and a generalization of the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given natural numbers m and n, we define a deflation map from the characters of the symmetric group S_{mn} to the characters of S_n. This map is obtained by first restricting a character of S_{mn} to the wreath product S_m \wr S_n, and then taking the sum of the irreducible constituents of the restricted character on which the base group S_m \times ... \times S_m acts trivially. We prove a combinatorial formula which gives the values of the images of the irreducible characters of S_{mn} under this map. We also prove an analogous result for more general deflation maps in which the base group is not required to act trivially. These results generalize the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule and special cases of the Littlewood--Richardson rule. As a corollary we obtain a new combinatorial formula for the character multiplicities that are the subject of the long-standing Foulkes' Conjecture. Using this formula we verify Foulkes' Conjecture in some new cases.

Stackable and queueable permutations
There is a natural bijection between permutations obtainable using a stack (those avoiding the pattern 312) and permutations obtainable using a queue (those avoiding 321). This bijection is equivalent to one described by Simion and Schmidt in 1985. We argue that this bijection might well have been found back in 1968 by readers of volume 1 of Knuth's *The Art of Computer Programming*, if Knuth had not assigned difficulty ratings to his exercises.

Symmetric Alcoved Polytopes
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 21 (1) (2014), Paper 1.20, 14 pp • View Publication • BIB
Generalized alcoved polytopes are polytopes whose facet normals are roots in a given root system. We call a set of points in an alcoved polytope a generating set if there does not exist a strictly smaller alcoved polytope containing it. The type $A$ alcoved polytopes are precisely the tropical polytopes that are also convex in the usual sense. In this case the tropical generators form a generating set. We show that for any root system other than $F_4$, every alcoved polytope invariant under the natural Weyl group action has a generating set of cardinality equal to the Coxeter number of the root system.

A new notion of vertex independence and rank for finite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A new notion of vertex independence and rank for a finite graph G is introduced. The independence of vertices is based on the boolean independence of columns of a natural boolean matrix associated to G. Rank is the cardinality of the largest set of independent columns. Some basic properties and some more advanced theorems are proved. Geometric properties of the graph are related to its rank and independent sets.

Twisting q-holonomic sequences by complex roots of unity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A sequence $f_n(q)$ is $q$-holonomic if it satisfies a nontrivial linear recurrence with coefficients polynomials in $q$ and $q^n$. Our main theorems state that $q$-holonomicity is preserved under twisting, i.e., replacing $q$ by $ωq$ where $ω$ is a complex root of unity, and under the substitution $q \to q^α$ where $α$ is a rational number. Our proofs are constructive, work in the multivariate setting of $\partial$-finite sequences and are implemented in the Mathematica package HolonomicFunctions. Our results are illustrated by twisting natural $q$-holonomic sequences which appear in quantum topology, namely the colored Jones polynomial of pretzel knots and twist knots. The recurrence of the twisted colored Jones polynomial can be used to compute the asymptotics of the Kashaev invariant of a knot at an arbitrary complex root of unity.

Positive margins and primary decomposition
Published in J. Commut. Algebra, Volume 6, Number 2 (2014), 173-208 • View Publication • BIB
We study random walks on contingency tables with fixed marginals, corresponding to a (log-linear) hierarchical model. If the set of allowed moves is not a Markov basis, then there exist tables with the same marginals that are not connected. We study linear conditions on the values of the marginals that ensure that all tables in a given fiber are connected. We show that many graphical models have the positive margins property, which says that all fibers with strictly positive marginals are connected by the quadratic moves that correspond to conditional independence statements. The property persists under natural operations such as gluing along cliques, but we also construct examples of graphical models not enjoying this property. We also provide a negative answer to a question of Engström, Kahle, and Sullivant by demonstrating that the global Markov ideal of the complete bipartite graph K_(3,3) is not radical. Our analysis of the positive margins property depends on computing the primary decomposition of the associated conditional independence ideal. The main technical results of the paper are primary decompositions of the conditional independence ideals of graphical models of the $N$-cycle and the complete bipartite graph $K_(2,N-2)$, with various restrictions on the size of the nodes.

Magnetic interpretation of the nodal defect on graphs
Published in Anal. PDE 6 (2013) 1235-1242 • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we present a natural proof of a recent and surprising result of Gregory Berkolaiko (arXiv 1110.5373) interpreting the "Courant nodal defect" of a Schrödinger operator on a finite graph as a Morse index associated to the deformations of the operator by switching on a magnetic field. This proof is inspired by a nice paper of Miroslav Fiedler published in 1975.

A Statement in Combinatorics that is Independent of ZFC (an exposition)
It is known that, for any finite coloring of the naturals, there exists distinct naturals $e_1,e_2,e_3,e_4$ that are the same color such that $e_1+e_2=e_3+e_4$. Consider the following statement which we denote S: For every $\aleph_0$-coloring of the reals there exists distinct reals $e_1,e_2,e_3,e_4$ such that $e_1+e_2=e_3+e_4$?} Is it true? Erdos showed that S is equivalent to the negation of the Continuum Hypothesis, and hence S is indepedent of ZFC. We give an exposition of his proof and some modern observations about results of this sort.

The simplicial boundary of a CAT(0) cube complex
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 13 (2013) 1299-1367 • View Publication • BIB
For a CAT(0) cube complex $\mathbf X$, we define a simplicial flag complex $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$, called the \emph{simplicial boundary}, which is a natural setting for studying non-hyperbolic behavior of $\mathbf X$. We compare $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ to the Roller, visual, and Tits boundaries of $\mathbf X$ and give conditions under which the natural CAT(1) metric on $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ makes it (quasi)isometric to the Tits boundary. $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ allows us to interpolate between studying geodesic rays in $\mathbf X$ and the geometry of its \emph{contact graph} $Γ\mathbf X$, which is known to be quasi-isometric to a tree, and we characterize essential cube complexes for which the contact graph is bounded. Using related techniques, we study divergence of combinatorial geodesics in $\mathbf X$ using $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$. Finally, we rephrase the rank-rigidity theorem of Caprace-Sageev in terms of group actions on $Γ\mathbf X$ and $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ and state characterizations of cubulated groups with linear divergence in terms of $Γ\mathbf X$ and $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$.

Testing Low Complexity Affine-Invariant Properties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Invariance with respect to linear or affine transformations of the domain is arguably the most common symmetry exhibited by natural algebraic properties. In this work, we show that any low complexity affine-invariant property of multivariate functions over finite fields is testable with a constant number of queries. This immediately reproves, for instance, that the Reed-Muller code over F_p of degree d < p is testable, with an argument that uses no detailed algebraic information about polynomials except that low degree is preserved by composition with affine maps. The complexity of an affine-invariant property P refers to the maximum complexity, as defined by Green and Tao (Ann. Math. 2008), of the sets of linear forms used to characterize P. A more precise statement of our main result is that for any fixed prime p >=2 and fixed integer R >= 2, any affine-invariant property P of functions f: F_p^n -> [R] is testable, assuming the complexity of the property is less than p. Our proof involves developing analogs of graph-theoretic techniques in an algebraic setting, using tools from higher-order Fourier analysis.
Asymptotical behaviour of roots of infinite Coxeter groups
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 66 (2014) 323-353 • View Publication • BIB
Let W be an infinite Coxeter group. We initiate the study of the set E of limit points of "normalized" positive roots (representing the directions of the roots) of W. We show that E is contained in the isotropic cone of the bilinear form B associated to a geometric representation, and illustrate this property with numerous examples and pictures in rank 3 and 4. We also define a natural geometric action of W on E, and then we exhibit a countable subset of E, formed by limit points for the dihedral reflection subgroups of W. We explain that this subset is built from the intersection with Q of the lines passing through two positive roots, and finally we establish that it is dense in E.

The fundamental invariants of 3 x 3 x 3 arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine the three fundamental invariants in the entries of a $3 \times 3 \times 3$ array over $\mathbb{C}$ as explicit polynomials in the 27 variables $x_{ijk}$ for $1 \le i, j, k \le 3$. By the work of Vinberg on $θ$-groups, it is known that these homogeneous polynomials have degrees 6, 9 and 12; they freely generate the algebra of invariants for the Lie group $SL_3(\mathbb{C}) \times SL_3(\mathbb{C}) \times SL_3(\mathbb{C})$ acting irreducibly on its natural representation $\mathbb{C}^3 \otimes \mathbb{C}^3 \otimes \mathbb{C}^3$. These generators have respectively 1152, 9216 and 209061 terms; we find compact expressions in terms of the orbits of the finite group $(S_3 \times S_3 \times S_3) \rtimes S_3$ acting on monomials of weight zero for the action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_3(\mathbb{C}) \oplus \mathfrak{sl}_3(\mathbb{C}) \oplus \mathfrak{sl}_3(\mathbb{C})$.

Saturated Domino Coverings
A domino covering of a board is saturated if no domino is redundant. We introduce the concept of a fragment tiling and show that a minimal fragment tiling always corresponds to a maximal saturated domino covering. The size of a minimal fragment tiling is the domination number of the board. We define a class of regular boards and show that for these boards the domination number gives the size of a minimal X-pentomino covering. Natural sequences that count maximal saturated domino coverings of square and rectangular boards are obtained. These include the new sequences A193764, A193765, A193766, A193767, and A193768 of OEIS.

Induced Saturation Number
Published in Discrete Math 312(21) (2012), 3096--3106 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we discuss a generalization of the notion of saturation in graphs in order to deal with induced structures. In particular, we define ${\rm indsat}(n,H)$, which is the fewest number of gray edges in a trigraph so that no realization of that trigraph has an induced copy of $H$, but changing any white or black edge to gray results in some realization that does have an induced copy of $H$. We give some general and basic results and then prove that ${\rm indsat}(n,P_4)=\lceil (n+1)/3\rceil$ for $n\geq 4$ where $P_4$ is the path on 4 vertices. We also show how induced saturation in this setting extends to a natural notion of saturation in the context of general Boolean formulas.
