The Dressian Dr(k,n) parametrizes all tropical linear spaces, and it carries a natural fan structure as a subfan of the secondaryfan of the hypersimplex Δ(k,n). We explore the combinatorics of the rays of Dr(k,n), that is, the most degenerate tropical planes, for arbitrary k and n. This is related to a new rigidity concept for configurations of n-k points in the tropical (k-1)-torus. Additional conditions are given for k=3. On the way, we compute the entire fan Dr(3,8).
Directed animals, quadratic and rewriting systems

A directed animal is a percolation cluster in the directed site percolation model. The aim of this paper is to exhibit a strong relation between the problem of computing the generating function $\G$ of directed animals on the square lattice, counted according to the area and the perimeter, and the problem of solving a system of quadratic equations involving unknown matrices. We present some solid evidence that some infinite explicit matrices, the fixed points of a rewriting like system are the natural solutions to this system of equations: some strong evidence is given that the problem of finding $\G$ reduces to the problem of finding an eigenvector to an explicit infinite matrix. Similar properties are shown for other combinatorial questions concerning directed animals, and for different lattices.
On a property of superposition of the generating functions ln(1/(1-F(x)))
Obtained a new property of superposition of the generating functions ln(1/(1-F(x))), where F(x) - generating function with integer coefficients, which allows the construction a primality tests. The theorem which is based on compositions of positive numbers and its corollary are proved. Examples are given. Key words: Generating functions, superposition of generating functions, composition of a natural number.
Optimality Bounds for a Variational Relaxation of the Image Partitioning Problem

We consider a variational convex relaxation of a class of optimal partitioning and multiclass labeling problems, which has recently proven quite successful and can be seen as a continuous analogue of Linear Programming (LP) relaxation methods for finite-dimensional problems. While for the latter case several optimality bounds are known, to our knowledge no such bounds exist in the continuous setting. We provide such a bound by analyzing a probabilistic rounding method, showing that it is possible to obtain an integral solution of the original partitioning problem from a solution of the relaxed problem with an a priori upper bound on the objective, ensuring the quality of the result from the viewpoint of optimization. The approach has a natural interpretation as an approximate, multiclass variant of the celebrated coarea formula.

The classical characteristic map associates symmetric functions to characters of the symmetric groups. There are two natural analogues of this map involving the Brauer algebra. The first of them relies on the action of the orthogonal or symplectic group on a space of tensors, while the second is provided by the action of this group on the symmetric algebra of the corresponding Lie algebra. We consider the second characteristic map both in the orthogonal and symplectic case, and calculate the images of central idempotents of the Brauer algebra in terms of the Schur polynomials. The calculation is based on the Okounkov--Olshanski binomial formula for the classical Lie groups. We also reproduce the hook dimension formulas for representations of the classical groups by deriving them from the properties of the primitive idempotents of the symmetric group and the Brauer algebra.
On the generalized (edge-)connectivity of graphs
The generalized $k$-connectivity $κ_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ was introduced by Chartrand et al. in 1984. It is natural to introduce the concept of generalized $k$-edge-connectivity $λ_k(G)$. For general $k$, the generalized $k$-edge-connectivity of a complete graph is obtained. For $k\geq 3$, tight upper and lower bounds of $κ_k(G)$ and $λ_k(G)$ are given for a connected graph $G$ of order $n$, that is, $1\leq κ_k(G)\leq n-\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil$ and $1\leq λ_k(G)\leq n-\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil$. Graphs of order $n$ such that $κ_k(G)=n-\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil$ and $λ_k(G)=n-\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil$ are characterized, respectively. Nordhaus-Gaddum-type results for the generalized $k$-connectivity are also obtained. For $k=3$, we study the relation between the edge-connectivity and the generalized 3-edge-connectivity of a graph. Upper and lower bounds of $λ_3(G)$ for a graph $G$ in terms of the edge-connectivity $λ$ of $G$ are obtained, that is, $\frac{3λ-2}{4}\leq λ_3(G)\leq λ$, and two graph classes are given showing that the upper and lower bounds are tight. From these bounds, we obtain that $λ(G)-1\leq λ_3(G)\leq λ(G)$ if $G$ is a connected planar graph, and the relation between the generalized 3-connectivity and generalized 3-edge-connectivity of a graph and its line graph.
A Ramsey-Classification Theorem and its Application in the Tukey Theory of Ultrafilters

Motivated by a Tukey classification problem we develop here a new topological Ramsey space $\mathcal{R}_1$ that in its complexity comes immediately after the classical is a natural Ellentuck space \cite{MR0349393}. Associated with $\mathcal{R}_1$ is an ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}_1$ which is weakly Ramsey but not Ramsey. We prove a canonization theorem for equivalence relations on fronts on $\mathcal{R}_1$. This is analogous to the Pudlak-\Rodl\ Theorem canonizing equivalence relations on barriers on the Ellentuck space. We then apply our canonization theorem to completely classify all Rudin-Keisler equivalence classes of ultrafilters which are Tukey reducible to $\mathcal{U}_1$: Every ultrafilter which is Tukey reducible to $\mathcal{U}_1$ is isomorphic to a countable iteration of Fubini products of ultrafilters from among a fixed countable collection of ultrafilters. Moreover, we show that there is exactly one Tukey type of nonprincipal ultrafilters strictly below that of $\mathcal{U}_1$, namely the Tukey type a Ramsey ultrafilter.

The moduli space $\mathcal M(r,n)$ of framed torsion free sheaves on the projective plane with rank $r$ and second Chern class equal to $n$ has the natural action of the $(r+2)$-dimensional torus. In this paper, we look at the fixed point set of different one-dimensional subtori in this torus. We prove that in the homogeneous case the generating series of the numbers of the irreducible components has a beautiful decomposition into an infinite product. In the case of odd $r$ these infinite products coincide with certain Virasoro characters. We also propose a conjecture in a general quasihomogeneous case.

We define a necessary and sufficient condition on a polynomial $h\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ to guarantee that every set of natural numbers of positive upper density contains a nonzero difference of the form $h(p)$ for some prime $p$. Moreover, we establish a quantitative estimate on the size of the largest subset of ${1,2,\dots,N}$ which lacks the desired arithmetic structure, showing that if deg$(h)=k$, then the density of such a set is at most a constant times $(\log N)^{-c}$ for any $c<1/(2k-2)$. We also discuss how an improved version of this result for $k=2$ and a relative version in the primes can be obtained with some additional known methods.
The $(q,t)$-Gaussian Process
We introduce a two-parameter deformation of the classical Bosonic, Fermionic, and Boltzmann Fock spaces that is a refinement of the $q$-Fock space of [BS91]. Starting with a real, separable Hilbert space $H$, we construct the $(q,t)$-Fock space and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators, $\{a_{q,t}(h)^\ast\}_{h\in H}$ and $\{a_{q,t}(h)\}_{h\in H}$, satifying the $(q,t)$-commutation relation $a_{q,t}(f)a_{q,t}(g)^\ast-q \,a_{q,t}(g)^\ast a_{q,t}(f)= <f,g>_{_H}\, t^{N},$ for $h,g\in H$, with $N$ denoting the number operator. Interpreting the bounded linear operators on the $(q,t)$-Fock space as non-commutative random variables, the analogue of the Gaussian random variable is given by the deformed field operator $s_{q,t}(h):=a_{q,t}(h)+a_{q,t}(h)^\ast$, for $h\in H$. The resulting refinement is particularly natural, as the moments of $s_{q,t}(h)$ are encoded by the joint statistics of crossings \emph{and nestings} in pair partitions. Furthermore, the orthogonal polynomial sequence associated with the normalized $(q,t)$-Gaussian $s_{q,t}$ is that of the $(q,t)$-Hermite orthogonal polynomials, a deformation of the $q$-Hermite sequence that is given by the recurrence $zH_n(z;q,t)=H_{n+1}(z;q,t)+[n]_{q,t}H_{n-1}(z;q,t),$ with $H_0(z;q,t)=1$, $H_1(z;q,t)=z$, and $[n]_{q,t}=\sum_{i=1}^n q^{i-1}t^{n-i}$. The $q=0<t$ specialization yields a new single-parameter deformation of the full Boltzmann Fock space of free probability. The probability measure associated with the corresponding deformed semicircular operator turns out to be encoded, in various forms, via the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, the $t$-Airy function, the $t$-Catalan numbers of Carlitz-Riordan, and the first-order statistics of the reduced Wigner process.

Adinkras are graphical tools created for the study of representations in supersymmetry. Besides having inherent interest for physicists, adinkras offer many easy-to-state and accessible mathematical problems of algebraic, combinatorial, and computational nature. We use a more mathematically natural language to survey these topics, suggest new definitions, and present original results.
Higher order duality and toric embeddings

The notion of higher order dual varieties of a projective variety is a natural generalization of the classical notion of projective duality, introduced by Piene in 1983. In this paper we study higher order dual varieties of projective toric embeddings. We compute the degree of the second dual variety of a smooth toric threefold in geometric and combinatorial terms, and we classify smooth 2-jet spanned projective embeddings of smooth threefolds whose second dual variety has dimension less than expected. We also describe the tropicalization of the k-th dual variety of an equivariantly embedded (not necessarily normal) toric variety.

There is a one-to-one correspondence between natural numbers and rooted trees; the number is called the Matula number of the rooted tree. We show how a large number of properties of trees can be obtained directly from the corresponding Matula number.
Inverse problems for the number of maximal independent sets
We study the following inverse graph-theoretic problem: how many vertices should a graph have given that it has a specified value of some parameter. We obtain asymptotic for the minimal number of vertices of the graph with the given number $n$ of maximal independent sets for a class of natural numbers that can be represented as concatenation of periodic binary words.

The mixing operation for abstract polytopes gives a natural way to construct the minimal common cover of two polytopes. In this paper, we apply this construction to the regular convex polytopes, determining when the mix is again a polytope, and completely determining the structure of the mix in each case.
A property of the bidimensional sphere
It is natural to ask for a reasonable constant k having the property that any open set of area greater than k on a bidimensional sphere of area 1 always contains the vertices of a regular tetrahedron. We shall prove that it is sufficient to take k=3/4. In fact we shall prove a more general result. The interested reader will not have any problem in establishing that 3/4 is the best constant with this property.

We study an infinite version of the "jeu de taquin" sliding game, which can be thought of as a natural measure-preserving transformation on the set of infinite Young tableaux equipped with the Plancherel probability measure. We use methods from representation theory to show that the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth ($\operatorname {RSK}$) algorithm gives an isomorphism between this measure-preserving dynamical system and the one-sided shift dynamics on a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables distributed uniformly on the unit interval. We also show that the jeu de taquin paths induced by the transformation are asymptotically straight lines emanating from the origin in a random direction whose distribution is computed explicitly, and show that this result can be interpreted as a statement on the limiting speed of a second-class particle in the Plancherel-TASEP particle system (a variant of the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process associated with Plancherel growth), in analogy with earlier results for second class particles in the ordinary TASEP.

Let F be a set of relational trees and let Forbh(F) be the class of all structures that admit no homomorphism from any tree in F; all this happens over a fixed finite relational signature $σ$. There is a natural way to expand Forbh(F) by unary relations to an amalgamation class. This expanded class, enhanced with a linear ordering, has the Ramsey property.
A quantitative Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem without neutrality

Recently, quantitative versions of the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem were proven for $k=3$ alternatives by Friedgut, Kalai, Keller and Nisan and for neutral functions on $k \geq 4$ alternatives by Isaksson, Kindler and Mossel.
We prove a quantitative version of the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem for general social choice functions for any number $k \geq 3$ of alternatives. In particular we show that for a social choice function $f$ on $k \geq 3$ alternatives and $n$ voters, which is $ε$-far from the family of nonmanipulable functions, a uniformly chosen voter profile is manipulable with probability at least inverse polynomial in $n$, $k$, and $ε^{-1}$.
Removing the neutrality assumption of previous theorems is important for multiple reasons. For one, it is known that there is a conflict between anonymity and neutrality, and since most common voting rules are anonymous, they cannot always be neutral. Second, virtual elections are used in many applications in artificial intelligence, where there are often restrictions on the outcome of the election, and so neutrality is not a natural assumption in these situations.
Ours is a unified proof which in particular covers all previous cases established before. The proof crucially uses reverse hypercontractivity in addition to several ideas from the two previous proofs. Much of the work is devoted to understanding functions of a single voter, and in particular we also prove a quantitative Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem for one voter.
Asymptotics of trees with a prescribed degree sequence and applications

Let $t$ be a rooted tree and $n_i(t)$ the number of nodes in $t$ having $i$ children. The degree sequence $(n_i(t),i\geq 0)$ of $t$ satisfies $\sum_{i\ge 0} n_i(t)=1+\sum_{i\ge 0} in_i(t)=|t|$, where $|t|$ denotes the number of nodes in $t$. In this paper, we consider trees sampled uniformly among all trees having the same degree sequence $\ds$; we write $`P_\ds$ for the corresponding distribution. Let $\ds(κ)=(n_i(κ),i\geq 0)$ be a list of degree sequences indexed by $κ$ corresponding to trees with size $\nk\to+\infty$. We show that under some simple and natural hypotheses on $(\ds(κ),κ>0)$ the trees sampled under $`P_{\ds(κ)}$ converge to the Brownian continuum random tree after normalisation by $\nk^{1/2}$. Some applications concerning Galton--Watson trees and coalescence processes are provided.
